Observations from Day 1 of Patriots Training Camp
Transcript
00:00Can I give you a few more takeaways from training camp today?
00:03You already had a later post.
00:04Yeah, please.
00:05But I found some stuff in here interesting.
00:06Sorry.
00:07Sorry, we're going to give it to you anyway.
00:08Cora's like, let's talk about my good baseball team.
00:10Cora's like, please.
00:11Yeah, please.
00:12Go ahead.
00:12Thank God camp's here.
00:14Number one, I meant to detail this earlier.
00:15Jared Wilson, the third-round pick out of Georgia, the second-third-round pick,
00:19in addition to Kyle Williams, was getting some top reps with Drake May at center.
00:23So maybe he's in the mix as a first-team center and or guard.
00:28He kind of moved around a ton of the offensive line while he was at Georgia.
00:32But maybe he's a center, which would shift either Bradbury or Strange.
00:35Yeah.
00:36Hopefully Strange right out of there.
00:38I mean, Bradbury, it seemed like that was a poorly kept secret.
00:44Is Andrews retiring?
00:45Is he getting cut?
00:46Whatever.
00:46But Andrews wasn't going to be back.
00:48And then they're like, oh, they really want Garrett Bradbury.
00:50And you're like, all right.
00:51But the Vikings didn't want him anymore.
00:53Not at all.
00:54And according to all the PFF stats, he's the worst pass-blocking center in football.
00:59And you're like, he's our guy.
01:00I'm like, well, hopefully they have another option.
01:03We have a year-two franchise quarterback.
01:05Yeah.
01:05Let's bring in the guy who can't protect at all in the past.
01:08No, he's the worst at it.
01:10So that's why a middle-round rookie, if they identified him and they want him,
01:15give him a shot.
01:16Look, I acknowledge.
01:17I don't love the offensive line, but I acknowledge mid-season we could look at it
01:21and say, you drafted a left tackle, fourth overall in Will Campbell.
01:25You found a center in the third round.
01:27I mean, that's possible.
01:27I wouldn't wager on it.
01:29I'm not holding my breath on it.
01:30But I acknowledge that's possible.
01:32And I didn't expect him to be in the mix, top center, on day one of training camp.
01:35I'd say that's a good sign.
01:37Here's another good sign from GRD.
01:38All right.
01:39Didn't detect any hint of a limp from Diggs.
01:41Neither did I.
01:42No.
01:43You know me.
01:43I have hawk-like vision.
01:45If something's limp, I'm spotting it.
01:48But he says.
01:50Is that your superpower?
01:51That's right.
01:52The Fantastic Five.
01:53No, no.
01:53Adam Jones.
01:55I'm the rock-hard man, is what we established earlier today.
01:58Good point.
02:00GRD says he did detect a little hitch in the spring.
02:02That's like Andy Hart was watching tape right away and detected a little hitch.
02:06He thought so.
02:07So there's that.
02:09No, he looked great.
02:09He was leading the drills.
02:10I thought he looked tremendous.
02:11In fact, he did more stuff than I even thought.
02:13100%.
02:13I thought yesterday we got a very positive update and we talked about what Vrabel said.
02:17And we're like, all right, that's a positive update.
02:19But it's still sort of TBD as to what he does.
02:22And maybe, like, he does every other drill.
02:24And you're like, all right, he's still out there.
02:25But he was, like, front of the line showing the younger guys how to do it.
02:28And then he was out there during 11-on-11s and Drake May was looking for him.
02:31So, no, really with that stuff, I'm very pleased.
02:35Giardi also said he saw a lot of Keyon White around the quarterback, which ties into the bad.
02:41Pass protection less than optimal.
02:43We read that from Bedard, Callahan, and others.
02:45He says some would even say subpar.
02:47Oh, boy.
02:47A lot of heat off the tackles.
02:49He says Dobbs was spraying throws here, there, and everywhere.
02:52He was terrible.
02:53Which I did notice.
02:54He was bad.
02:55He also, he makes a good point.
02:56He said, I didn't notice any of the receivers that are fighting for jobs and playing time.
03:00He says Polk was conditioning only, but Baker, Board, and Booty were all out there.
03:04None of those guys flashed, which I'd agree with.
03:06Chisholm had one nice catch.
03:08Kyle Williams had one very noticeable catch.
03:10Two total.
03:11Diggs, I noticed as well.
03:12I didn't notice any of those.
03:13Oh, it was Diggs and Williams, I would say.
03:15And then Drake May, pretty sharp, except for the one kind of overthrow that Peppers almost picked off.
03:22That's kind of what jumps out to me mainly.
03:24And then, yeah, how bad the second offense looks.
03:26But that's sort of a secondary thing.
03:28So, there's a big-time competition, not only for playing time, but just roster spots at the receiver position.
03:35And it seems like Kyle Williams, who's probably already going to go in, like sort of, you know, he's going to get the benefit of the doubt.
03:41He's going to get any kind of tiebreaker.
03:43But even still, he kind of separated himself from that group of second and third-year receivers.
03:47Yeah.
03:47It's one day at training camp.
03:49You know, who knows what it actually means at the end of the day.
03:52But Williams flashed.
03:53And that's good.
03:54The other side of that coin is none of those other guys did, which that shouldn't be a surprise.
03:57None of them were good last year.
03:59Right.
03:59None of them were good.
04:00I would have been surprised.
04:01Uh.
