00:02We'll give you the latest on what Shohei Otani did again last night for the Los Angeles Dodgers as we get started.
00:07Let's get to the NFL with training camps opening.
00:09We learned a lot yesterday with general manager Mike Brown, who spoke yesterday from the Cincinnati Bengals.
00:15It looks like Trey Hendrickson is not going to be reporting to training camp anytime soon.
00:20Along with the rest of the Bengals, he's the one that's sitting out.
00:23Of course, they have other players holding out as well.
00:25Hendrickson said that he would not play under his current contract and looks like right now one of the better defensive players in the NFL will either be looking for a trade or looking for a payday.
00:35As of right now, he is getting neither.
00:38Meanwhile, Stephon Diggs has been cleared for his first training camp with his new team.
00:43He's a member of the New England Patriots.
00:44If you haven't been paying attention this past offseason, he had an ACL injury last year with the Houston Texans and certainly has made some headlines this offseason,
00:53which had nothing to do with football, but Diggs is expected to play a prominent role in the offense that is now led by Mike Rabel.
01:01He's the new head coach with the New England Patriots as well.
01:04He may remember the Tennessee Titans once upon a time, not that long ago, drafted Will Levis with the thought process he could be their quarterback of the future.
01:12That appears to not be the case.
01:14He was placed on injured reserve and is going to miss the entire season, decided to have surgery, very strangely enough, right on the eve of training camp.
01:23And Brandon Allen now will be the backup for the Titans.
01:25Some speculation from some of the writers in Tennessee that Levis simply didn't want to be the backup to Cam Ward this year.
01:32Well, he's not going to be the backup to anyone.
01:34Then, of course, they can cut him after the season.
01:36So, Levis unlikely to take any more snaps for the Titans.
01:40Meanwhile, let's go to the mound and to the plate.
01:42Shohei Ohtani was back in action yesterday for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
01:46And good thing for him that they won.
01:48It's been a tough go of it in the month of July.
01:51Ohtani homered.
01:52He also pitched three innings.
01:53And L.A. beat Minnesota by a final of 5-2.
01:56All-star Byron Buxton hit a leadoff home run.
02:00But the Twins didn't do much else after that.
02:02How about a full assessment from Ohtani?
02:04Here is Dave Roberts after the game talking about his start and his plate appearances.
02:11I thought obviously the homer was great.
02:17And then he punched out a few times after that.
02:22I still thought he was fine in the batter's box.
02:26Tonight on the pitching side, I just felt that the location, the command wasn't what it was the last few outings.
02:34I don't think you can really argue or complain about an 0-1 sweeper.
02:38That's the second pitch of the game for the homer.
02:41But even after that, there was a lot more misfires tonight than there had been.
02:47What do you attribute that to?
02:49What's that?
02:50What do you attribute that to?
02:51I don't know.
02:52You know, there was a, I'm not sure how long he had in between his last outing.
03:01But, you know, maybe a little rust.
03:04But he calibrated when he needed to and made pitches when he needed to.
03:08There were some really good throws in there.
03:09So, ultimately, he got through three innings, made pitches when he needed to, and the stuff was still really good.
03:19Pitchers duel in Miami yesterday, seeing the Padres travel to South Florida, win game one of their three-game set.
03:26MartĂn Maldonado had a big hit.
03:28Jackson Merrill, another 2-1 the final.
03:31San Diego beats Miami.
03:32Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants just continue to struggle.
03:36The Braves score five runs in the first inning.
03:38The Giants are falling out of the race very quickly.
03:41Last night, unfortunately, it was courtesy of their starting pitcher of the Giants, Hayden Birdsong.
03:45He did not record an out.
03:48Gave up five runs in the first inning.
03:50Back-to-back starts with some troubles for Birdsong, says manager Bob Melvin.
03:55Look, it just kind of teetering the last time and found a way through it.
03:59Today he couldn't, unfortunately.
04:01So, you know, put us on a little bit of a bind with the pitching, obviously,
04:06and how we had to cover this game.
04:07But, you know, not ideal.
04:11And kind of back to square one with him as far as some of the command issues go.
04:16Did he have a conversation with him after the outing?
04:19Or has he sort of just wanted to isolate himself?
04:22Did he talk about how it's out?
04:24Yeah, I've talked to him.
04:25I've talked to him.
04:25Yeah.
04:27He's very understanding of what he needs to do.
04:30How do you write the ship when command issues arise like this?
04:34You've got to figure it out.
04:36So, he will.
04:38There's a couple of errors, throwing errors,
04:41but it seemed like the Acuna one where he was able to score was a little.
04:44That's going to be bad communication is what it is.
04:47So, I mean, you know, Casey's got to let him know when he gets up.
04:53You know, Chappie's trying to yell.
04:55You know, it's just, you know, Casey's still kind of learning the position too.
04:59It's just a bad look when you're playing like that.
05:03And something like that happens in a game like this where we look terrible.
05:07Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Brewers are the hottest team in baseball that remains.
05:11They win their 11th straight game and not a close one either.
05:15Milwaukee beats Seattle by a final of 6-0.
05:19The Brewers right now are gaining ground on the very best record in Major League Baseball.
05:25And it would appear that not only are they headed to the postseason,
05:27but could be headed for a very active trade deadline coming up next week.
05:32Another team that's been hot, the Toronto Blue Jays.
05:34They beat the Yankees again, 4-1 the final in Toronto.
05:37The Blue Jays have won 11 straight home games.
05:40That is a franchise record as they are taking a bigger lead in that American League East over the Yankees.
05:46Don't really hear a ton of concern yet for the Yanks.
05:49Again, their trade deadline also coming up next week.
05:51Here's Aaron Boone on the latest play.
05:53Bottom of the fifth roundup being pretty disastrous there.
05:56Just how do you process the way it unfolded?
05:58Just not completing the play, you know.
06:03Oswald had to range to his left and, you know, a straw getting down the line quick.
06:07Probably rushed his throw and pulled it a little bit.
06:09And then Volk just doesn't catch it real clean and kind of, as a result, jerks the throw a little bit.
06:16But plays you've got to make, especially against a team, you know,
06:19playing as well as they are in this building especially.
06:22Why do you think you guys have not been able to play consistent, clean baseball?
06:26Now, six errors the last five games against the Blue Jays.
06:29Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's been here.
06:31You know, we've got to play better.
06:33I mean, it's, you know, been a contributor to us not finishing off some games.
06:36And, you know, around this place, you know, I feel like we've been catching it well.
06:43But we've got to do better than that.
06:45Meanwhile, the Phillies went on a very bizarre play in case you missed it at the end of their game against the Red Sox.
06:50Good matchup there.
06:51Three to two the final.
06:52Ends up being a walk-off catcher's interference, which is generally not something you see very often.
06:58In fact, that's how the game ended, not with the headgear there.
07:04Here's Rob Thompson after the game talking about that play.
07:07No, just going off of Sosa's body language when he started talking to the umpire.
07:13We really didn't have to go to the phone because, you know, we got the freebies.
07:18So, but there's two things this year that I've never seen before in 40 years.
07:22And one is a walk-off inside the park home runner and a walk-off catcher's interference.
07:29It did, surprisingly.
07:35What made Lazard your choice in the top of the 10th out-of-road?
07:38Just he's getting a lot of swing and mess, you know.
07:40And just because of the curveball, it was a good matchup with that group of headers.
07:44Oh, he's been great.
07:49I trust him.
07:50He's been really good.
07:52And he's got ice in his veins, too.
07:54He's really cool out there.
07:58Paul Skeens needs run support.
08:00He got a little bit yesterday.
08:02Three runs is better than none, I guess.
08:04The Pirates end up winning against the Tigers by a final of three to nothing.
08:10And rookie Bryce Matthews had five runs driven in as the Astros beat the Diamondbacks by a final of six to three.
08:16In college football, real quick, Jake Retzlaff ends up transferring from BYU.
08:21Reports are he's headed to Tulane.
08:23Memphis is interested in joining the Big 12.
08:25They want to fork up some money, but it lacks some support.
08:28And also, ACC Media Day starts today.
08:31We've got five teams set to meet with the media.
08:33Miami, SMU, Stanford, Cal, and Virginia.
08:36We'll play back some of that sound and video for you tomorrow on our next edition of Newswire.
