00:00Hi, my name is Natalie. I'm a court reporter at the Illawarra Mercury. I've been covering the
00:05Farnborough Heights murder trial. So the accused in this matter is Melencos Nugota. He is 49 years
00:12old and he is accused of murdering his father Vitamir, who was also known by his neighbours
00:18as Vic, in the backyard of their Primrose Place home. The trial has heard that Vitamir, who was
00:2474 years old when he died in February last year, was hit at least seven times with a weapon causing
00:31six significant head injuries. A neighbour found him on the evening of Sunday, February 4th, lying in
00:38his backyard near his lawnmower with a sheet covering the upper half of his body. His son Malenko, who
00:44was also known by the name Gobbasan, was arrested at the home that night. He denies killing his father
00:51and the judge in this judge alone trial will have to decide whether he is in fact the person
00:55who inflicted the fatal injuries. Now, if he is found to have committed this act, there is a
01:02potential secondary issue as to whether he has a defence available to him under mental health laws.
01:08We heard four days of evidence and now Malenko will be psychiatrically examined before the trial
01:13can resume. Okay, what we know about the victim Vitamir is that his neighbours knew him by Vic.
01:18He kept bees, he grew fruit and vegetables, which he liked to pickle. One of his friends told the trial
01:24that his sauerkraut was beautiful and he also liked to brew beer. He was 74 years old at the time
01:30that he died and he was a father not only to Malenko, but to Malenko's older sister, Silvana.
