Flood rescue capabilities were put to the test over the weekend during a NSW State Emergency Service (SES) exercise, preparing first responders for future weather events in the Riverina
Transcript
00:00Today we are here with NSW SES members and other personnel with our partner
00:07emergency services organisations sharpening our flood rescue capabilities
00:13and skills under a simulated flood rescue area of operation where NSW SES
00:20under those circumstances take command of flood rescues. There's been a
00:26suite of scenarios today where we have had the three of our flood rescue
00:30capabilities being our in-water operators, on-water and land-based
00:34operators mixed into various teams using their vessels and
00:40and other technical equipment going through scenarios which included
00:44a person with a disability stuck on a riverbank with a wheelchair needing
00:50rescuing. There were two people that were swept out of
00:54a vehicle as a scenario and were floating downstream which required
01:00the intervention of our operators and also stranded personnel a group of
01:06a group of people stranded on a simulated island
01:10that required various flood rescue capabilities. Participating
01:13organisations in this exercise have been the NSW SES obviously
01:17from all parts of the southern zone and we've
01:21been joined by NSW Ambulance Rescue, our Marine Rescue and Maritime NSW partners.
01:28We've also had the VRA Rescue send a person over for their IMT
01:33engagement and we had our colleagues from Victoria State Emergency Service come up
01:38and observe and also begin to participate which is a great opportunity.
01:43We did get our Mobile Incident Command Centre brought down from Sydney for this event
01:48and we've set this command centre up as a flood rescue cell and that is where
01:53we're under those FRAO conditions that we have flood rescue coordinators and support officers
01:59that command and control the response to flood rescues within a general local government area boundary.
02:06In that flood rescue cell environment is our functional incident management team
02:12experience and testing and then we've got our flood rescue capabilities with those operators out
02:18of the field using the vessels, using our specialised equipment and communicating back with our flood seal.
