00:00In a dramatic turn-off event ahead of Cameroon's 2025 presidential election,
00:05opposition leader Maurice Camtou's candidacy has been officially confirmed
00:09despite looming threats of invalidation.
00:12Camtou, a professor of public law and head of Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC,
00:18had long been expected to run.
00:20However, his campaign hit turbulence on July 16 when Interior Minister
00:25suggests that Camtou's candidacy could be rejected during a high-level meeting with regional governors.
00:31The minister's warning added fuel to speculation of political interference
00:35and raising concerns about electoral fairness.
00:39But Camtou had defied the pressure.
00:42On July 15, he officially fired his candidacy at a police station in Yaoundé
00:47in accordance with Article 123 of Cameroon's electoral code.
00:51What's more surprising, Camtou would not represent the MRC,
00:56its long-time political vehicle.
00:58Instead, he's now the official candidate of Manidem,
01:02the African movement of new independence and democracy,
01:06within the opposition coalition.
01:08The announcement was forced-inted by Manidem's leader
01:11and later confirmed through leaked document and legal filings.
