Cameroon’s opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary issued a 48-hour ultimatum to President Paul Biya’s government, demanding the release of citizens he says were “unlawfully detained” across the country.

In a fiery address from Garoua, Tchiroma accused Biya’s long-serving administration of “state-based terrorism”, alleging “ethnic, political, and regional cleansing” and claiming that hundreds of thousands of Cameroonians are being held outside legal frameworks.

Tchiroma, who rejected the results of the October 12 presidential election, declared himself “president-elect” and called the government’s actions “unbearable and unacceptable.”

He warned that if detainees are not released within 48 hours, “Cameroonians will find themselves in legitimate defence.”

President Paul Biya, aged 92, has ruled Cameroon since 1982, and was officially re-elected with 53.7% of the vote, a result the opposition claims was rigged.
