00:00Lights out and away we go and Max Verstappen gets the better start from Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton away quickly too.

00:06And Hamilton already level with Carlos Sainz, but Sainz has the inside line.

00:10Alonso stays in second place, then Sainz, then comes Hamilton, Magnussen around the outside of him.

00:14Mick Schumacher under pressure already from Esteban Ocon in the other, Alpine, George Russell just behind those two.

00:20Into the first chicane we go and Hamilton wheel to wheel there with Kevin Magnussen just getting ahead outside of the chicane.

00:25Magnussen had a tremendous start for Haas there, but all clean then.

00:29As they head down to turn six and seven.

00:37Yeah, Gasly.

00:43I love the engine.

00:45Oh, and if qualifying was bad, this is epically bad.

00:49For Sergio Perez, he is out of the race.

00:51He's going to find the gap by the grandstand there that the marshals can push that Red Bull into.

00:58Race gets neutralized and the drivers have to reduce their speed now.

01:13It's too good an opportunity to miss, especially as these tyres seem to be going off quite quickly.

01:17Vettel's stop was a planned stop, so his tyres were going off.

01:21Obviously the top road cars there, Lewis Hamilton as well.

01:25He's also in, but nothing from George Russell, nothing from the other cars as well.

01:30We've got some other people.

01:31It's a bit too early for some people, Crofty, but if you're in trouble with your tyres, it's worth coming in now.

01:36What about Lewis Hamilton's base?

01:38Hamilton behind Esteban Ocon.

01:39The Alpinas look racy, but I tell you what, that Mercedes skipping over the bumps and the bouncing a little bit.

01:45Almost on a par with Ocon going into that corner.

01:48Hamilton will get a decent exit and has got a decent exit on the fresher tyres and is racing Ocon now down towards Turn 1.

01:55These two have collided and tangled together in 2022, but not on this occasion.

02:00Lewis Hamilton gets himself past Esteban Ocon, takes the applause of the crowd and is up into fifth place.

02:06And now going through the gears with DRS active up to 200 miles an hour, Fernando Alonso is waved goodbye by Max Verstappen.

02:17And this is Mick Schumacher. Mechanical problems affecting the Haas.

02:29As Carlos Sainz makes his pit stop and will come out behind Alonso and almost behind Lewis Hamilton.

02:36Well done to the Ferrari crew. That was good work from them.

02:41Fernando Alonso hasn't been into the pits yet. These tyres are a lot older than Hamilton's.

02:45Hamilton moves out from behind the rear wing of the Alpine and then moves past the Alpine by the time they put the brakes on.

02:53It's a nice straight forward pit stop and the hard tyres are on for Max Verstappen.

02:58Two and a half seconds as he comes out into the first corner.

03:03Lewis Hamilton's taking the long way round there. This is going to be pretty tight.

03:06Verstappen has the outside line though. Hamilton on the inside.

03:10Lewis Hamilton ahead of Max Verstappen.

03:13Max Verstappen. And despite a speedy, rapid pit stop from Red Bull.

03:18Hamilton there. Wow. Half a foot, Martin. Clear of Max Verstappen. That could be crucial.

03:24You have to assume that Red Bull thought they could clear Hamilton there. So that'll put a smile on the Ferrari pit wall.

03:30Of course, Sainz, his tyres I mentioned earlier on were 12 laps younger, but you'd have to think he might still have to stop again.

03:38But how much time is Verstappen going to lose now?

03:42Might be the best thing or the first thing to make the Ferrari pit wall smile this afternoon.

03:47Why don't you make sure I f***ing hand over here and cross?

03:50Didn't have the pace.

03:52That did not put a smile on Max Verstappen's face whatsoever.

03:56But an overtake on Lewis Hamilton here would certainly help him as he makes his way down the main straight.

04:02Hamilton's not fighting this one. He's not defending it. He knows the Red Bull has got a faster pace.

04:07And for the moment, Hamilton can come into the pits as well.

04:12As Charles Leclerc has Daniel Ricciardo as the next car he wants to try and overtake.

04:17And he's going to try and find somewhere a little more unusual to make that move stick.

04:21And he does make that move stick into Turn 8. This was the move on Yuki Tsunoda.

04:29Down towards the first corner, Joe Granue is passed by Charles Leclerc on the medium tyre now.

04:36And that's why we've got yellow flags. And it is Yuki Tsunoda in the Alfa Tauri.

04:42Sorry, I'm out.

04:44Now that's surely going to be a virtual safety car or a safety car.

04:49Safety car, safety car. This has absolutely worked in Carlos Sainz's favour.

04:54Because I think he's coming into the pits. He is coming into the pits.

04:57While we see the replay, Tsunoda came into the pits, went straight on as he came out on cold tyres.

05:02But Carlos Sainz, who was told his safety car window is opening, has now got to the pit stop at exactly the right time for him.

05:11Losing less time by making his second pit stop than Max Verstappen did.

05:16And having fresher tyres than Verstappen to run to the end of the race.

05:19Verstappen might have just taken the lead here.

05:21But Sainz should have less of a gap between himself and the Red Bull driver when we go racing once again.

05:29And we are now going green.

05:31When does Verstappen want to release the rest of the pack?

05:33Right out of the final chicane.

05:35And Carlos Sainz has gone right with him as well.

05:38Verstappen leads them then down towards the first turn.

05:41Fernando Alonso right on the heels of his teammate Esteban Ocon as Verstappen leads Sainz, leads Hamilton,

05:47then leads Russell, Ocon and Alonso through those first couple of corners.

05:51Charles Leclerc right behind Fernando Alonso.

05:54Then comes Bottas, Vettel and Joe Guanyu.

05:57That's the top ten.

05:59That is Fernando Alonso getting passed by Charles Leclerc.

06:03And that's gone down very well with those that bought a red T-shirt this weekend.

06:07This is Esteban Ocon and Charles Leclerc into the hairpin.

06:11Neat little move there by Leclerc who's having a much better end to this race and he's now up into fifth place.

06:18Max Verstappen can just start to relax and to rest a little bit as for the first time he starts a race in Montreal on pole.

06:26And for the first time he sees the chequered flag and will know what it's like to win the Canadian Grand Prix.

06:33Max Verstappen comes home in first place.

06:36Carlos Sainz pushed him all the way and takes the fifth second place in his career.

06:40And it's Lewis Hamilton back on the podium once more for Mercedes in third.

06:45Max Verstappen back on top of the podium for the first time here and not for the first time this season.

06:51He extends his championship lead.

06:53It was another thrilling Canadian Grand Prix and another fine performance.

06:59And I win for the champion, defending champion Max Verstappen.
