00:00I mean those videos are incredible on it but just how good a job do our teachers
00:09do the brilliant aren't they I mean like you know we actually all went to the
00:15same high school or secondary schools because it back home but and all I can
00:19say is growing up in Ireland the teachers were more than just kind of
00:22teaching you maths and stuff to was music there was a lot of just kind of I
00:26don't know they were they were very kind of motherly like if you know I mean and
00:29sort of encouraging yeah they play a big part in building a little young kids
00:35into you know slightly less young kids perhaps guys some of your former
00:41teachers are watching tonight some of Jermaine certainly are they've been in
00:44touch message for Jermaine Jermaine you may like to know that many of your teachers
00:51do watch and are proud of what you've achieved from mr. gaunt and all at the
00:57Beckett school in Nottingham thank you for being nice people must have loved you
01:02as well when you know what what am I teachers I was really close with the guy
01:06called mr. Barrett and he was a PE teacher as you can imagine but I was
01:10playing against Fulham one day and I was in the dressing room playing for Newcastle
01:14and someone's my mr. Barrett's outside and I'm like what so I've gone and got him
01:19and he's just stood there outside my PE teacher from school so I'm getting in
01:22and I took him in the dressing room with all the lads he was just like wow we
01:27actually had two teachers in our school that I think should be mentioned in this
01:30conversation yeah because when but me Shane and Mark went to school together as
01:33Mark said earlier on but they actually did it but they put grease together and
01:37without those two teachers Kenny Donner and David McAvoy without those two teachers we
01:42wouldn't have done grease and then Westlife would have never been formed so I got
01:46them today actually heard about the great production and sadly no photographic
01:54evidence exists but we have just to aid our viewers a little bit a little bit of
02:02technology that we've used there we're getting to grips in that picture I didn't
02:10play Danny I played the Teen Angel with the glitter in the wings that's Frankie Valli right
02:15Jackie's not the only teacher we're surprising tonight we'd also like to give a
02:26very special mention to the winner of teacher of the year in a secondary school
02:30yeah she has an infectious passion for learning and her colleagues say watching
02:34her teach is an absolute joy her pupils think she's incredible so we're delighted to
02:38reveal that the winner is Abigail chase our base leg school in news in front of her
02:50students and colleagues this morning we also know that she's a massive strippy fan
02:58as well and she's watching this at home right now so Abigail here's a special
03:03message from my local girl Amy Dowden just for you hi Abigail it's Amy here
03:09from strictly come dancing and I wanted to personally congratulate you on your
03:13award and for flying the flag for all the teachers in Newport and South Wales
03:18you're an amazing teacher and your students are lucky to have you keep up the
03:22great work congratulations to both of tonight's award-winning teachers every day
03:30this week we're celebrating the incredible work of all teaching staff up and down
03:34the country and showing just how much they're value indeed and on tomorrow's
03:39show we'll be revealing the winner of the teacher award for lockdown hero we
03:43couldn't find oh we couldn't find any pictures we've done that bit already
03:46don't we let's move on that's what were you like at school I mean we've got into
03:51like little bits and pieces but you know what were you really like at school I think we
03:56I think we're all decent enough shoes but we we were I don't think I was a good
03:59student we weren't we were more into honestly we're more into the rehearsals
04:02after school going to the musicals yeah that was for me that was everything
04:05about school you know just getting up and doing your rehearsals and it was
04:08Grease or Oliver Twist or whatever it was it was always to do with singing or
04:12being on stage and you know academically we were I wasn't we didn't focus I used to
04:17get in trouble all the time for singing like at the top of my lungs in the middle of
04:21like English class Mark figured out in like the second last year of school to
04:26not sit beside me anymore yeah because he basically would be like I actually want
04:30to do well in my exam
04:41he was a footballer and no sports teachers were great because I used to get out of
04:46class because I'll be playing for doing the 14s or doing the 16s you were never in
04:49school you were always representing the school we're going to be coming back to
04:53you in a minute all right because we want to hear more about this brand new
04:56album that you've got you're going to be hoping that it tops the charts once again
04:59after the record-breaking 2019 reunion but first let's take a look at your new
05:04single starlight
05:34guys there was a bit of pace to that do I detect a bit of an ABBA influence there
05:44yeah there is a bit of an ABBA bump to it yeah you have lockdown to blame for that because I think we
05:49were all locked up for two years and pretty much you know we made that album it wasn't planned and it
05:54was something that we just decided over zoom one day you know how can we work from home and we just got
05:59into it and we just started recording and with and writing and recording with producers on zoom
06:03around the world whether it was LA or London or Dublin or Sligo on the west coast and we I think
06:08the album is a little bit full of flavors of like songs like that where it's really up-tempo quite
06:13positive and then we have obviously some renowned for ballads and some nice ballads on there my hero
06:18being one and this song that Shane wrote about his mom and dad passing away called always with me so
06:24it's got a little bit of everything I think lockdown over two years gave us the ability to do that you
06:29yeah I mean mark in the middle of the new single the the track we just heard there is a really high
06:34no in there you have to kind of take a bit of a run up to the pommel horse for that from from day
06:48one in the band I kind of was always given like the high no or the ad lib at the end of the song or
06:52whatever and at the beginning I used to get very scared about it you know I was like oh my god I'm
06:56never here comes a note here comes a note here comes a note and I kind of would literally like
07:01completely mess it up on multiple occasions and it wasn't until probably I don't know six or seven
07:06years ago I was like right I'm going to a vocal coach and I'm going to try and harness this fear
07:11like I could I always knew I could hit the note but I was psychologically wrecking myself out of it
07:16myself off so I finally am went to vocal coaching and worked out that it's all in my head and that
07:21I can hit the note ten times a day I mean I can't hit it now obviously because you know I'm not
07:26warmed up no because I don't like being put in the spot in yourself isn't it preparing for a performance
07:37you know and warming up so for me to do that would be really unprofessional so Shane you know as Nicky
07:48just mentioned there were some really emotional tracks on the album that you've had a hand in
07:52writing tell me about that process it's quite therapeutic for you I think it was very therapeutic
07:56yeah as Nicky said lockdown it was kind of a crazy time for everybody but music for us was somewhere we
08:02can well that's first ever heard it yeah so we wrote lots of songs obviously on the album the most
08:08we've ever done on any album which is amazing for us as a band and it sets up a lot of stuff for the
08:14future we feel as a band and it's a different kind of thing for us that we really enjoyed but that song
08:19yeah is about my mom and dad my mom dad unfortunately passed away in the last year and a half and and yeah
08:25it was a difficult time but that song definitely I felt closer to them when I was starting to write
08:29music or play guitar I took up guitar during lockdown because I wanted to play guitar my whole life so
08:34I said I'm gonna learn how to play guitar on zoom which went into songwriting and which led to lots
08:38of other songs are very good on the guitar so I'm gonna play it now well you are gonna be playing live
08:45though I mean Nicky you know you're preparing to tour including this big sold-out show Wembley Stadium
08:51I mean not many bands have achieved that's an incredible thing I mean that's mind-blowing it's
08:56particularly I think because we're 22 or 23 years together and to do Wembley Stadium at this point
09:02in your career I mean that it's amazing and and again touring for us it's this long together all
09:08of our families through the years have come along you know we've had all our parents there and then
09:12through the years we got married we've all had kids they've grown up now with us and come to see
09:16us and their daddies on stage like 10 of them right yeah we've we've said one show I have a
09:19football team we'll get there I don't know which one of us but we'll get there or two bands actually I
09:23have to say hello to my children because they're watching now Koa, Zeke and Komi and I have to say
09:27hello to them
09:28we've had loads of questions in by the way from from our viewers but we've picked this one from Claire
09:42hi guys my name's Claire I'd like to know is there any chance we could hear some old album tracks in
09:49the tall set list this is an ongoing kind of controversy between us and our fans like so
09:58every year we say right let's do a couple of album tracks you know come on look we've got some album
10:02tracks that are bigger than just any old album track you know songs that even non Westlife fans
10:08would know you know but the problem is when we go to make our set lists and we've got to like bump off
10:13an actual number one song or bump off and like our pet it's not a pet hate it's like it's like our
10:20Samson's heel is like if we see people going to the toilet during our show we know what song goes down
10:38okay so you mentioned you know we were talking about the kids 10 Westlife kids between you and I
10:44heard a rumor that they've been put in their own band together is that right yeah well they did it on
10:48the reunion tour backstage kind of a few of the younger kids got together and they kind of put
10:55this little band together and they made up a few songs actually Nicole Shane's oldest girl started
10:59writing a few songs and then Patrick and Shaney and my oldest boy Koa put a little band together and
11:05then Gia Nikki's youngest girl was their security guard and like they actually they actually organized
11:11it in a way where they had these little performances for us at the end of at the end of the night we'd be
11:15backstage after the show you know kind of celebrating the gig with a few beers and then we come out and
11:19go okay we're ready for a performance now and they'd sit there and they were genuinely really really
11:23good they had little harmonies that their own little songs brilliant what was the song they sang
11:26oh flying with their wings oh wasn't that what I can't remember name song they're all shouting at
11:32the TV no other time guys I think thank you so much Westlife's album is called wild dreams and is
11:42out on Friday tickets for the tour are on sale now or indeed that's all we have time for so thanks to
11:47Westlife for joining us tonight Rylan and Ronan will be here tomorrow they'll be joined by
