00:00The summer holidays can be brilliant but let's be honest keeping the kids busy

00:05for six weeks without spending a small fortune that can be a serious challenge.

00:09Trips, tickets, snacks, it all ends up fast but if you're in South Wales the

00:14good news is you don't need to break the bank to have fun this summer. There are

00:18castles to explore, splash pads to conquer, beaches to roam and festivals to

00:22dance through, all without spending a penny. Here's a roundup of the very best

00:26free things to do with the kids this summer right on your doorstep. Let's kick

00:30off with the festivals because there's nothing that tires kids out like fresh

00:32air, noise and face paint helps. The Big Cheese Festival in Cofilly is back on

00:36Saturday the 30th and Sunday the 31st of August. This huge free event takes over

00:41the town centre with street food, live music, living history displays, nights in

00:45armour and a fun fair. It's buzzing with energy and right next to Cofilly Castle.

00:49Earlier in the summer Tavoyle Festival usually takes place in early July at

00:53Cardiff Castle. It's a celebration of Welsh culture and language with loads for

00:57families, think music, storytelling, crafts and plenty of bilingual activities.

01:01Even if you don't speak Welsh the atmosphere is super welcoming and fun for

01:04all ages. Bring snacks, sun cream and let the kids run wild while you enjoy a bit

01:09of live music in the sun. Of course Wales has a great selection of

01:13free museums so you don't have to worry about the weather both indoors and

01:16outside like St Fagan's National Museum of History. Everyone's had a school trip to

01:20St Fagan's in the past so don't forget about the classic day out. Plus of course

01:24it's completely free. It's like stepping into a storybook version of Welsh history

01:28with over 40 original buildings that have been moved and rebuilt there.

01:32Kids can explore an old school, working bakery, traditional houses and even the

01:35chapel. There are farm animals, open fields and picnic areas too so you can make a

01:39full day of it. Then behind me you have the National Museum Cardiff right in the

01:43heart of the city centre. The dinosaur skeletons are always a hit plus there's also a

01:47hands-on natural history section, art galleries with kids friendly trails and ever-changing

01:52exhibitions. Both museums are free entry and brilliant for mixed ages so you can

01:56keep the entertained for hours. Cardiff is full of history that kids can

02:00explore without buying a single ticket. You can walk around the outside of Cardiff

02:04Castle through the old animal wall and into Butte Park which used to be the

02:08castle grounds. The walls, gate houses and little stone nooks are perfect for

02:12imaginative games. Inside the park follow the wooden sculpture trail and it's

02:16brilliant for spotting squirrels and other animals, riding scooters and having

02:19a picnic. Just outside the city Castat Coch the fairy tale red castle in the

02:24woods above Tong Gwynlice is a great adventure spot. Entry to the castle

02:28itself isn't free but the trick is the forest trails and paths around it are.

02:32They're amazing for bug hunts, den building and even family bike rides.

02:36It's a great way to combine fresh air and storytelling. You can easily imagine

02:40dragons living in the towers. Sometimes the best days out are the simplest.

02:44Victoria Park in Canton is perfect for younger kids as one of Cardiff's best

02:48free splash pads open throughout the summer holidays.

02:50It's fenced off, has benches and shade and it's right next to a brilliant play

02:54area for all ages. There's also a cafe and plenty of grassy

02:57spaces to spread out with snacks and towels.
