00:00Irregular migration is a serious problem across the world, across Europe.

00:04It is a common problem for all European countries.

00:08It is now on the agenda of practically all European meetings

00:11in a way it simply wouldn't have been years ago.

00:14But it requires a serious, pragmatic response.

00:18Not the politics, the performative politics of the easy answers.

00:22And it is very important that we are able to show collectively

00:28the two of us as leaders of two great nations confronting this threat

00:33that social democracy can prevail and provide the answers to these serious problems

00:38because otherwise the easy answers get an airing.

00:42And it is of some significance, I think, that whilst we have been working hard

00:46to get the returns agreement, others have been simply taking pictures of the problem.

00:51And that is where the politics is.

00:53We have to show that pragmatic politics is the way to deliver the results

00:58which matter for both of our peoples.

01:00It is important to the UK and to France, but it is really important in this age

01:06that we show that social democracy has the answers to the threats that we face

01:10across Europe and across the world.
