Wales has recorded its hottest ever August bank holiday, with temperatures peaking at
00:08
over 29 degrees Celsius in Huardén in Flintshire, but this isn't the first time Huardén has
00:13
made the weather headlines.
00:18
The small village is already known as something of a heat hotspot. In July 2022, it hit a
00:22
blistering 37.1 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature ever recorded in Wales. Before
00:28
that, it held the previous record of 35.2, set on the same site back in 1990.
00:36
That legacy continued this bank holiday, as Huardén once again led the temperature charts,
00:42
this time setting the record for the hottest bank holiday ever recorded in Wales. But it
00:46
begs the question, why does one village in North Wales break so many temperature records?
00:51
It's mainly because it sits in a sheltered lowland, meaning the air is allowed to heat
00:57
up and not moved on by cooling Atlantic winds, like in other parts of Wales. The valley
01:02
effect makes it especially prone to recording extreme highs compared to the rest of the country.
01:09
Though the newest record isn't as extreme as 2022's peak, the steadily rising temperature
01:14
benchmarks suggest something more lasting and less seasonal is unfolding. Do rising global
01:19
temperatures and climate change mean we'll see more sweltering bank holidays in the future?
01:26
For now, most of Wales will see the mercury drop back after the bank holiday, which could
01:30
spell the end of the summer weather. But the big question remains, will Huardén continue
01:35
to rewrite Wales' hottest records in the years ahead? James Peach Watkins, reporting for
01:39
