Risk for tropical development set to increase in mid-July

It's still early in the Atlantic hurricane season, but the risk for a named storm will be on the rise as July progresses.

00:00We're going to give you a quick update here on the tropics and first we'll start you off with a look at where we are on our calendar.

00:05So as you look at the timing of hurricane season, the number of storms per day from 1944 to 2020,

00:11you can see that right now here that we're still in the early parts of July,

00:14you can see that we're still in the steady, slowly increasing numbers there of both named storms and hurricane.

00:22One thing I will point out that's very interesting about this time of year is that as you can see,

00:26most of the named storms we get actually intensify into hurricanes.

00:31But overall here, we're not really going to see the increase until we head into early parts of August.

00:35So we still have about a month until we really get into the thick of hurricane season.

00:40But I will point out that now is still a time to start to pay attention to the overall forecast here as we head into hurricane season.

00:47Because in addition to not only the direct impacts from a landfalling tropical storm or hurricane,

00:52a lot of these flooding issues that we've been dealing with, where do you think they got the moisture from?

00:58They got their moisture from some of the leftover segments of some of those storms that we've been tracking.

01:05And we are going to be watching out for potential development even more here as we head throughout next week.

01:10We're talking July 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th.

01:13Now here across the Gulf Coast and parts of the southeast and Atlantic Florida coast,

01:17you can see that the overall trend for tropical development potential is going to remain relatively low.

01:22But we will be watching out for this potential very close here as we head throughout that time period.

01:26So that's going to be for next week.

01:27And as far as tracking any impacts, we could see a low impact there across parts of the Gulf Coast,

01:33the central and northern portions of the Florida Peninsula, and the east coast of Florida.

01:37So we're not done completely yet with watching out for what we're going to be tracking there across parts of the tropics.
