05:45Civil society and the media face increasing challenges in the EU, warns the rule of law report.
06:02This commission report takes the pulse of democratic institutions in the 27 member countries through four pillars.
06:08Of the 25 rule of law report, there is no progress in respect of many specific recommendations, and of course, that is a concern.
06:17And so where we find that the space within which civil society operates, or where we find that that has narrowed, for example,
06:26or where we find that the media are under undue pressure and influence, then we have to call that out.
06:34In Italy, a new law on security aimed at combating terrorism and organised crime could have repercussions for civil society and media freedom.
06:44So in the case of Italy, the important thing is to continue with the efforts to introduce the agreed reforms to the justice system.
06:55We have made recommendations having looked at the four key pillars in the rule of law area.
07:01So, for example, in the media, having a system in place for the funding of public service media in Italy is a specific recommendation that we have made.
07:12In Greece, Poland and Hungary, concerns persist about the independence and impartiality of media regulatory authorities.
07:21In Hungary, journalists and media outlets were accused of serving foreign interests and have been investigated.
07:27The crackdown on civil society in Hungary was also underlined in the report.

07:48Hello, I'm Korek Bojanowski. I'm a film director. I'm currently in Kiniamondo.
07:54Up and coming Polish film director, Korek Bojanowski, has just been to Shanghai and Brussels, where he has showcased his directorial debut, A Loss of Balance.
08:04Euronews spoke to the director about his current acclaims and future projects.
08:08Bojanowski says that in his film he wanted to deeply explore his character's internal emotions.
08:36A Loss of Balance is inspired by a real-life scandal in Polish film schools that took place in 2020, after a series of revelations by former students revealed a toxic atmosphere.
08:52The movement which began on social media started a larger conversation about film school.
09:22Coming of age is also a common theme in Bojanowski's works.
09:41Bojanowski's A Loss of Balance was first recognized at the Gdynia Film Festival in 2024 and most recently in Brussels at the closing of the Polish EU presidency.
09:52Byliśmy w Brukseli, w jednym z lokalnych kin. To był pokaz, który skupiał ludzi związanych właśnie z Parlamentem Europejskim, z instytucjami kulturalnymi, które są związane z Unią Europejską.
10:03A Loss of Balance was also recently screened in Shanghai, where it won an award for its screenplay.

10:39Bojanowski is already working on his second film, which he plans to film this year.
10:54This film is also a film about entering adulthood.
10:57But it's another stage.
10:58Because I feel that the loss is about the competition in the world.
11:02That we are playing in the world, because we have a vision of the world.
11:05When we have these 20-25 years, maybe 25-30 years, we are playing in the world.
11:10That it seems that the world has to be in front of us, and that it is not.
11:14And this is the second stage of entering adulthood, when we are not playing in the world, but ourselves.
11:19That it is the same in the world.
11:20And that it is the same in the world.
11:21That it is the same in the world.
11:22The person who is like my age, 31-35 years old, is that this is the next stage.
11:27And it is a little bit about that.
11:29But I am very strongly in Warsaw, because I am from Warsaw, and even in Warsaw.
11:34And it is also called the city.
11:36He reveals that his next film will be a black comedy.
