00:00Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveils EU-Ocean's Pact at the UN Oceans Conference.
00:11Ukraine and Russia have begun a new prisoner exchange after a second round of direct talks
00:17in Istanbul.
00:22Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled on Monday the EU-Ocean's Pact at
00:28the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice.
00:31Hosted by France, the conference brings together some 60 countries in a joint effort to protect
00:37oceans.
00:41We need to protect ocean health and its resources.
00:46I mean, we often speak about the fact that the rainforests are our green lungs.
00:51If this is the case, our oceans are our veins and arteries.
00:57We cannot live without them.
00:59And everything which is flowing through our arteries and our veins, the water, is essential
01:04to survive.
01:09The strategy will revise several EU laws related to maritime areas.
01:14It should also boost the competitiveness of the maritime industry with a new plan for the
01:20sector.
01:21Von der Leyen also promised that 1 billion euro would be allocated for 50 projects around
01:28the world for scientists and the conservation of oceans.
01:38NATO Chief Mark Rutte has called for a quantum leap in defense spending in response to mounting
01:43global threats, particularly from Russia.
01:47Speaking at Chatham House after meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he said that
01:51a 400 percent increase in air and missile defense is needed to counter these threats.
01:57Starmer has pledged to increase British defense spending to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product
02:02by 2027, and to 3 percent by 2034.
02:07Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years.
02:13Five years.
02:15Let's not kid ourselves.
02:17We are all on the eastern flank now.
02:20The new generation of Russian missiles travel at many times the speed of sound.
02:25The distance between European capitals is only a matter of minutes.
02:31There is no longer east or west.
02:34There is just NATO.
02:36Rutte has proposed a target of 3.5 percent of economic output on military spending and another
02:41one-and-a-half percent on defense-related expenditures such as roads, bridges, airfields and seaports.
02:48Most NATO members have already pledged a substantial increase in military spending.
02:53And Rutte said he is confident the alliance will agree to the 5 percent target at its summit
02:57in The Hague in two weeks.
03:05Ukraine's Air Force says Russia launched 479 drones at Ukraine overnight, in what was the
03:12biggest bombardment of the war so far.
03:16Around 20 missiles were also fired, targeting mainly central and western areas of the country.
03:23Ukraine reportedly neutralized 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight, claiming that
03:29only 10 drones or missiles hit their target.
03:34Officials said one person was injured.
03:38A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push on eastern
03:44and northeastern parts of the front line.
03:48Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky said late on Sunday that in some of those areas,
03:53quote, the situation is very difficult, but provided no details.
03:58So far, two recent rounds of direct peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations
04:03in Istanbul have yielded no significant breakthroughs.
04:14Ukraine and Russia have started a new prisoner exchange, following an agreement reached at the
04:19second round of direct talks in Istanbul last Monday.
04:25Ukrainians are coming home from Russian captivity.
04:28Russian President Vladimir Zelensky said in a statement.
04:36Kiev and Moscow agreed that the exchange would include young soldiers under 25 years old and
04:41those severely ill.
04:44Russia's defense ministry confirmed the return of the first group of Russian POWs on Monday.
04:51Among those returning to Ukraine are the defenders of Mariupol, who have spent over three years
04:57in Russian captivity.
04:58Both sides have also agreed to exchange the bodies of fallen soldiers.
05:05Kiev says it has brought back over 5,000 prisoners of war in a series of exchanges since March and that it continues to offer Russia an all-for-all swap.
05:18Kiev says it has brought back over 5,000 prisoners of war in a series of
05:23Kiev.
05:24A referendum in Italy on easing access to citizenship and boosting worker protection failed due to low turnout.
05:33To be valid, the vote required participation from at least 50% plus one of eligible voters.
05:41However, Italian authorities said slightly less than 30% of eligible voters had cast their ballots at the end of two days of voting.
05:51One ballot question asked voters whether the residency requirement for Italian citizenship should be caught from ten to five years.
06:02The remaining four questions addressed recent reforms on labour rights and protections.
06:08The proposals came from Italy's unions and left-wing opposition parties.
06:13But the ruling coalition opposed the measures, with some politicians urging voters to stay away
06:19and sink the turnout below the quorum threshold.
06:24Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney went to the polling station but deliberately left without voting.
06:29Donald Trump's travel ban on 12 countries went into effect on Monday.
06:40The United States President banned travel to the US by citizens of 12 countries and restricted access for those from seven others.
06:48He had announced the ban last week citing security concerns.
06:52The ban comes as part of Trump's escalating crackdown on immigration that has often pushed the limits of executive power
07:01and clashed with federal judges trying to restrain him.
07:06Groups that provide aid and resettlement help to refugees denounced the ban.
07:11They say the policy is not about national security but instead sows division.
07:17In his first term in 2017, Trump had similarly issued an executive order banning travel to the US by citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries.
07:35Iran claims to have obtained information on Israel's nuclear program.
07:40The country's intelligence minister, Esmail Khatib, said the documents were retrieved through infiltration and access to sources but did not provide any evidence.
07:49The announcement comes days before the UN's nuclear watchdog prepares to meet.
08:04Iran is expected to face renewed diplomatic pressure over its failure to clarify long-standing questions about its nuclear activity.
08:23Clean-up began after dozens of residents in the Swiss canton of Vallis were evacuated following a mudslide.
08:38Caused by heavy rainfall, the mudslide tore away an emergency bridge in the area, meaning a pedestrian and cycle path is the only thing linking to rural villages.
08:48We are blocked because we can't get access to the other villages.
08:51We have people who descend from the bus and want to climb up to L'Ortier.
08:54They have 40-45 minutes of walking.
08:56It's a bit complicated.
08:59We have already come to see the park in the course.
09:03Let's see what it looks like.
09:05Yesterday, we were in front of us.
09:07We saw rocks descend from the summit.
09:11The debris flooding the area since last week's storm carries wood, mud and large stones.
09:20Locals will be relocated elsewhere for an indefinite period, according to local officials.
09:26This year, arrivals to Greece by air will be up by roughly 7%.
09:34However, the increase will mainly concern Athens and Thessaloniki.
09:39Other Greek islands, particularly in the Aegean, seem to have reached their limits on how many visitors they can accommodate.
09:46This is fueling renewed discussions on whether restrictions should be placed on the creation of new accommodation in the most popular destinations.
09:55I would like to say something.
09:56I think that it is important to go to an innumerable perception of the özellation in the region of cleanliness.
10:02We can't demand for any new atmosphere, as well as tourism,
10:03all of us are looking at the全部 buildings, or within entertainment.
10:08Even if we can't wait to have a full experience of the tourism in the future,
10:09we are looking at the end of the public.
10:12It's a very important thing, all of the art of the tourismpawn the tourism.
10:20After the last three years of tourism, the number of tourists in 2025 is to remain in the same level with the previous.
10:30The tourism industry claims that, in order to increase the number of tourists,
10:34should be first to implement the number of tourists.
10:37The tourism industry, which is a big problem in the sea,
10:42the conditions of roads, the parkings that don't exist.
10:47Some of them have easy solutions that we propose with the region.
10:51Some of them want time.
10:52Whatever they do in public transportation,
10:55we know that it's not a decision that it will come today and it will begin tomorrow.
10:58Greek hoteliers argue that the term over-tourism is being used to cover up chronic pathologies of the state,
11:05which has failed to ensure that the Greek islands have the necessary infrastructure to support visitors.
11:11The Santorini and Mykonos don't have this code,
11:14they don't have any investment in the supply.
11:17We can't talk about strategic planning and coronavirus tourism
11:21and they don't have the appropriate supply.
11:25A new island is an appropriate supply,
11:28and there is no doubt about this.
11:31Hoteliers have asked that the 500 million euros per year in fees paid by visitors
11:36be allocated to projects that allow quality and sustainable tourism.
