00:00Israel's Security Cabinet has approved plans to take control of Gaza City in the north of the enclave
00:05following an hours-long meeting that ended in the early hours of Friday.
00:11At least three people were injured in the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Sumy overnight
00:15following Russian drone attacks.
00:21Israel's Security Cabinet has approved plans to take over Gaza City in the north of the enclave.
00:26Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced the plans following the end of an hours-long meeting
00:32which started on Thursday and ran into the early hours of Friday.
00:35The plan is yet another major escalation in Israel's 22-month-long military offensive on Gaza.
00:42Just before the Cabinet convened to discuss the controversial plan,
00:45Netanyahu said that Israel planned to take control of the entirety of the besieged territory.
00:50He did, however, deny any intention of taking ownership of the enclave long term,
00:54stating that Israel only wants to establish a security perimeter, but won't be a governing body.
01:00The Israeli premier said that eventually the Strip would be handed over to a coalition of Arab forces
01:05who'll govern it after Hamas is removed from power.
01:09Hamas has slammed Netanyahu's plans for Gaza, saying it amounts to a coup.
01:13U.S. President Donald Trump did not oppose the plan to seize all of Gaza,
01:18saying it was up to Israel to make that decision.
01:20The war has so far claimed the lives of more than 61,250 Palestinians,
01:26according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
01:29The UN says Israel's war has also displaced two million people,
01:33some multiple times, and driven many towards famine.
01:36World leaders criticised Israel's decision to seize control of Gaza City,
01:46warning the move risk worsening the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
01:53The Israeli Security Cabinet approved the controversial plan early Friday,
01:58marking a new escalation in the country's nearly two-year-long war against Hamas.
02:03UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the move in strong terms,
02:09saying that Israel's decision to further escalate its offensive in Gaza is wrong.
02:16The UN called for Israel's plan to be immediately halted.
02:20On all evidence to date, this further escalation will result in more massive force displacement,
02:26more killing, more unbearable suffering, senseless destruction and atrocity crimes.
02:32The war in Gaza must end now.
02:35Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid denounced the plan as against the advice of military leadership.
02:41IDF Chief of General Staff Ayal Zemir had warned it would endanger the lives of hostages
02:46and further stretch the military.
02:47Berlin will suspend arms exports to Israel that could be used in the Gaza Strip,
02:56German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Friday.
03:00The move marks Germany's historically staunch supporter of Israel's
03:03clearest shift yet in response to Israel's military campaign.
03:08Merz said the decision came after Israel's Security Cabinet announced it would take over Gaza City.
03:13The decision impacts future arms exports and stops short of a full weapons embargo.
03:21Merz reiterated Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas,
03:25but criticized the humanitarian consequences of Israel's planned offensive.
03:30Germany is Israel's second largest arms supplier behind the United States
03:34and has so far hesitated to criticize or take concrete steps against its actions in the Gaza Strip.
03:4552 exceptionally rare lizards from the Aeolian Islands were hatched at the reptile house of Rome's Biopark Zoo
03:51as part of a conservation project aimed at preventing their extinction.
03:54lizards from the islands are considered an endangered species classified among those
04:03at highest risk of extinction in the Mediterranean basin.
04:09The tiny reptiles born at Rome's zoo are only a few centimeters long
04:12and have to be cared for in a special nursery
04:15within a restricted access area of the reptile house.
04:17The zoo said they are not yet visible to the public
04:24as they need an environment that preserves their tranquillity in order to grow.
04:30It's said their hatching was an extraordinary event
04:33which took place in the framework of the European-funded project
04:36Life EO Lizard
04:37which aims at reducing the risk of extinction of endangered species.
04:41The program combines conservation in a controlled environment and in nature.
04:51The lizards will be introduced to the Sicilian archipelago next spring.
04:59British border authorities have detained the first group of migrants under a pilot plan
05:04that will send some who crossed the English Channel on small boats back to France.
05:09According to the UK Home Office, the migrants were detained on Wednesday
05:14the day the program came into force
05:16and will be held at immigration removal centers until they are returned to France.
05:22The groundbreaking principle here is that people can be returned to France
05:27if they arrive on these dangerous and illegal small boats.
05:30In return, we will take people who have applied legally through a legal process
05:35been through security checks
05:37but we should be returning people who have made these illegal crossings.
05:40UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron
05:45announced a deal last month.
05:47While the pilot involves a limited number of people
05:50UK officials suggest the deal is a breakthrough
05:54because it sets a precedent.
05:57However, critics say the program will do little to deter migrants
06:01because the numbers returned to France are small
06:04and lupos will allow people who enter Britain illegally
06:08to remain as they pursue human rights claims.
06:15At least 10 people have been killed
06:18and 33 others are missing after flash floods in Yuzhong County
06:22in China's northwestern Gansu province.
06:25According to China's state broadcaster CCTV,
06:28heavy rains since Thursday have triggered severe flooding
06:32and left around 4,000 people stranded.
06:36Local authorities said Lanzu City alone
06:38had received 195mm of rain by early Friday.
06:43Several parts of China are being battered by heavy rains
06:46with President Xi Jinping
06:48urging all-out rescue and flood prevention efforts.
06:55U.S. President Donald Trump is hosting the leaders
06:59of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House on Friday evening
07:02for what he called a historic peace summit.
07:05The two former Soviet republics,
07:08which have seen almost four decades of conflict,
07:10could finally settle for peace in the region,
07:13notably away from Moscow.
07:15It's also an opportunity for Trump to present himself
07:18as a global peacemaker,
07:20fulfilling a key election promise he made
07:22on his campaign trail last November.
07:25Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan
07:28and Azerbaijan's President Ilyam Aliyev
07:30met for their first bilateral meeting in July
07:33with the aim of finalizing a peace treaty.
07:36The critical issue of the Zangazur Corridor,
07:39a proposed transport route designed to connect
07:41Azerbaijan's mainland with its enclave,
07:44which borders Turkey via Armenian territory, remains.
07:48Armenia and Azerbaijan have been sworn enemies for decades,
07:51going to war twice over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region,
07:55which has killed and displaced thousands.
08:00Spain has started August with a swell train heat wave
08:03that, according to the state's meteorological agency,
08:06will last until at least Wednesday 13th August.
08:10Authorities placed active alerts in practically the old country,
08:14warning that temperatures could reach up to 43 degrees Celsius
08:18in some regions, highs of 36 degrees Celsius
08:21to 38 degrees Celsius are expected this Friday
08:25in most of the interior of the peninsula,
08:28with peaks of up to 40 degrees Celsius
08:30in the valleys of Tagus, Guadiana, and Guadalquivir rivers.
08:35Yes, it's a lot of heat, a lot of heat,
08:37almost to 40 degrees Celsius,
08:39but we already knew this.
08:41So we have to prepare ourselves,
08:43hydrate ourselves a lot,
08:45take water, water, water,
08:48and that's it, but I hope to maintain it.
08:52I'm going to get cold.
08:53I put the water in my head,
08:55hoping to resist,
08:57not to come out, not to come out,
08:58but it's really...
09:01extreme heat is also expected to affect France,
09:09Italy, Portugal, and the central Balkans
09:12over the coming days
09:13as a heat dome makes its way across the region.
09:26Countries across Europe are grappling with severe heat waves.
09:29People living in urban areas are particularly badly hit.
09:33This is due to the heat island effect,
09:35the phenomenon where urban areas experience
09:37significantly higher temperatures
09:39than their rural counterparts during heat waves.
09:43Scientists found surface temperatures in cities
09:45were sometimes up to 10 to 15 degrees higher
09:47than in their rural surroundings during summer.
09:50These figures are particularly stark
09:52given the sheer number of people subjected to these temperatures.
09:56Almost 40% of the EU's population lives in cities,
09:59and this figure is only expected to rise in the coming years.
10:04Additionally, this phenomenon has a dire impact on people's health.
10:09People that are mostly affected are children and elderly people,
10:14elderly people that already have some kind of illnesses,
10:17for example, respiratory illnesses
10:21or cardiovascular illnesses.
10:23They are most affected by this heat.
10:25And certainly, the urban heat island effect plays mostly at night,
10:28so when you don't cool down during the night,
10:31well, this also can have negative health effects.
10:35This heat island effect is mainly due to urban land use.
10:39Cities are made of asphalt and concrete,
10:42materials that absorb the intense solar radiation
10:45to which they are exposed.
10:47This heat is retained and then radiated after the sun sets,
10:51which is why temperatures cool down less.
10:54However, adaptation is possible.
10:59Solutions include making cities greener.
11:03Trees like these offer shade, which helps people cool down.
11:06Plants also work as nature's air conditioner,
11:09taking water from the ground, through their roots,
11:12and then releasing it into the air as vapor.
11:15But adaptation only works locally.
11:18And alone, it isn't enough.
11:19As long as global warming will persist,
11:22we will see higher temperatures,
11:23not only in cities, but everywhere around the world.
11:27So indeed, the urban heat island effect
11:28will also increase towards the future
11:30with additional climate change.
11:32So it's also important to reduce our emissions
11:34as fast as possible.
11:36The warning from experts is clear.
11:39Either tackle the root cause
11:40or face cities becoming unlivable.
11:42Theunt from scratch the roots
