UN Human Rights Office says 'deeply troubled' by Kenya protester deaths

The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said on Tuesday it was "deeply troubled" by the killing of at least 10 people during the latest clashes between Kenyan police and anti-government protesters.

00:00The United Nations Rights Office has raised an alarm over police brutality and killings
00:05witnessed during the latest clashes between Kenya police and anti-government protesters.
00:10The UN noted the use of lethal and unlethal ammunition, tear gas and water cannon by police
00:15in their response to the demonstrations.
00:19It is very concerning that these latest incidents come barely two weeks after more than 15 protesters
00:25were reportedly killed and many more injured in Nairobi and in other parts of Kenya on the 25th of June.
00:33The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, renews his call for calm and restraint
00:37and full respect for the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly.
00:43It is essential that legitimate grievances at the root of these protests are addressed.
00:50The UN is now calling for thorough investigations and those responsible to be prosecuted.
00:55for the heinous acts during the protests.
00:58We note that the police have announced an investigation into earlier incidents.
01:03The High Commissioner repeats his call for all reported killings and other alleged violations
01:08and abuses of international human rights law, including with respect to the use of force,
01:13to be promptly, thoroughly, independently and transparently investigated.
01:18Those responsible must be held to account.
01:20Kenyan youths and others for weeks have been protesting against police brutality and poor governance
01:26while demanding President William Ruto's resignation over alleged corruption
01:30and the high cost of living.
