Sixteen deaths recorded in Kenya protests, most killed by police, Amnesty Kenya says

00:00The day began with hope and a sense of determination as thousands took to the streets of Nairobi on Wednesday morning

00:06to mark one year since last year's anti-government demonstrations.

00:11They were able to march peacefully for about 30 minutes,

00:14but then police quickly moved in with tear gas, water cannons and eventually live bullets.

00:20During the protests in June and July of last year, at least 60 people were killed and dozens more were illegally detained.

00:27To this day, there have been no convictions.

00:30Many of the people I spoke to earlier told me they want justice and government accountability.

00:35We honor the dead, the Gen Zs that were killed during the last protests.

00:40Over 60 Gen Zs have died.

00:41Today is the day that we remember those guys, our fallen soldiers have died.

00:45That's why we have carried these flowers.

00:47Enough is enough.

00:48And we don't want each and every time we are protesting, someone doesn't have to die.

00:52We are just peaceful.

00:53We want our rights in Kenya.

00:54I'm here because Kenya is drowning and we are the people who can save it for the better future.

00:59So it's upon us, the youth, to get in and make it better.

01:04Tensions over police brutality have grown in recent weeks,

01:08following the death of blogger Albert Ojuang in police custody,

01:12just days after he was arrested for criticizing a senior officer.

01:17Wednesday's protests spread to cities across the country as more police were deployed to contain them.

01:23In the afternoon, several major TV stations were pulled off air as the government moved to enforce a ban on live protest coverage.

01:31It's a decision that's been condemned by several rights groups, including Amnesty International.
