00:00This is Tim Wasberg, I'm here in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the Red
00:29Sea International Film Festival, now relocated into the historic part of the city, Abbalah.
00:37It was very important to me that the European person comes to this house.
00:41It's a very special house and things are happening there.
00:46And on the other hand, she doesn't understand any Arabic, so we see the perspective of the
00:51women there.
00:52So that's a very interesting thing because you're kind of seeing through her eyes, but
00:58as the audience, you see more.
01:01And that was interesting for me.
01:03Why this story at this time?
01:05Of course, there's so many things going on.
01:07After your first movie, what was the motivation in terms of this character study?
01:12I did Sun.
01:14It was about a migrant family living in Austria, Kurdish like me.
01:18And we see their struggles there.
01:24And with Moon, I wanted to flip the story with the European person going to a Middle Eastern
01:31country.
01:31My role was hard for me because we had to live it, not like a script and we say it like we
01:42had to live it and say what we want, what we think we have to say.
01:45So it was hard, like on set, when the camera is on.
01:52What I thought, like me and my role are in common.
01:59I didn't see anything in common, actually.
02:02Only that how we deal with things.
02:05I have a nice job offer to come.
02:08I'm going to Jordanian and I'm training at the bar.
02:10How is it going?
02:14Welcome to our home.
02:16We're going to go and meet my sisters.
02:19So maybe she got her arms first and then we just start with big circles of the shoulders
02:23to the back.
02:28Indirectly, the audience can think about stuff.
02:31It's not like because it's Sarah going there to a like a shady family.
02:38She doesn't know at the beginning.
02:39But at the end, you can take away and think about stuff which is like told indirectly.
02:46Actually, the three sisters could be also one.
02:50Yeah.
02:50And the thinking about what one person would do when she wants to run away.
02:56All the things and fear.
02:57So I split them in three.
02:58Yes, I wanted to show some, like every sister has a special thing going on with being kept
03:07away.
03:08Yeah.
03:08And the younger sister is a little crazy.
03:12And Sarah has some kind of a loner personality.
03:17And she's like, I would say, also pushing things away from her and also a little cold.
03:25So maybe I wanted to show like an Austrian person with her.
03:32So like this, this version of Europe coming, getting the money and leaving.
03:38I mean, maybe they want to try to help, but they won't.
03:46What are you doing?
03:47Everyone here is not about this family.
03:50They are very, very famous for what?
03:52They are kind of bad.
03:56What man?
03:57Let's go now.
03:57Why are you up with girls?
03:59Yeah, I mean.
03:59Don't be so close.
04:01There are a lot of things I want to explain to you.
04:06It was really hard.
04:07Yeah.
04:07Because sometimes like I used to be in the scene and like I just tell them stop, stop, stop,
04:13stop, stop.
04:14Yeah.
04:15I don't know what I'm saying.
04:16Like, I don't know what I'm saying.
04:18What am I doing?
04:19And sometimes I go really deep in my acting.
04:23There is a scene where it's really, and the other thing, it really didn't show my acting
04:28because the scene was very quick.
04:31But when my sister was burning and me crying, they had a really like fast shot of me.
04:40But the acting was really, really long.
04:44Like I had to do it several times.
04:47And it was really long, but with the other thing, they just cut it and put like a small
04:51one.
04:52So sometimes it was funny because I didn't know what I'm doing.
04:55And sometimes I really got deep into the character.
05:00Cordwin had to say like we stopped while I'm crying.
05:03Wow.
05:03She kept, I kept imagining my real sister.
05:07Because I have four sisters and a brother.
05:09Okay.
05:10I kept to get into the character and like to get into the scene.
05:14I like imagined the whole thing happening to me.
05:17Wow.
05:18And I wasn't using my phone at all.
05:21Okay.
05:21The whole shooting.
05:22Wow.
05:22To like get into the character, I used to like isolate myself.
05:26So you wouldn't talk to them?
05:28No, anyone.
05:29I wouldn't talk to, the crew was not allowed to talk to us.
05:33Wow.
05:33Even in lunch, only in the morning and when we finish.
05:39Wow.
05:40So in our breaks, no.
05:42Okay.
05:42While we're eating, no.
05:44So in this scene, when I was crying, Cordwin and like Andrea or someone from my co-stars,
05:52she was like, we stopped.
05:55The scene ended like they took it.
05:58And I was like crying, crying.
06:01It's my sister.
06:02They're playing with you.
06:03You know?
06:15It's all good.
06:17It's all good.
06:19It's all good.
06:19I mean, the family doesn't stand for any country now.
06:22It's a very unique story, but I would say patriarchy is not a white feminist thing.
06:34It's also happening here.
06:37Yeah.
06:37And that was also important for me to tell.
06:40And it's about, the movie is about like, in general, it's about sisters.
06:45Sisters in Europe and sisters here in the Arab region.
06:48And if there are, like, how they grew up and how they are kept in constructs.
06:56Like even Sarah or her sister as a mother and she's somehow unhappy.
07:01And the Noor here, she wants to escape.
07:05And yes, and also the solidarity between them.
07:09It had, like, an impact on me whenever I ended, like, the shooting day and going back to my house.
07:18I just feel so tired.
07:20I don't feel like myself.
07:22Like, I feel like I'm still Shaima, not Nagham.
07:24Yeah.
07:25And my parents used to call me, because I want to get into the character, used to call me Shaima.
07:30Okay.
07:31Not Nagham.
07:32Really?
07:32Yeah.
07:33Wow.
07:34So, because I'm really, in my real life, I'm very talkative, very social, very funny.
07:40Yeah.
07:41I'm laughing all the time.
07:42My personality is not sad at all.
07:44Yeah.
07:44Okay.
07:45Sometimes I do get sad, you know, but I'm the one who talks, who makes jokes.
07:50So I had to get into, like, a depressed character.
07:53Hmm.
07:53Okay.
07:54It had, like, a small impact on me, because after we had the shooting, I was a bit depressed.
08:00Okay.
08:00Yeah.
08:00I had, like, to sit down.
08:03This is not me.
08:04This is a character I played.
08:05It's fine.
08:06Yeah.
08:07But it all go, like, it all got to the end.
08:30It all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like, it all go, like
