00:00After spending a decade running a successful fishing ships restaurant,
00:04North East entrepreneur Wazim Muir is making a move back into his family's long-standing trade,
00:10jewellery. Wazim has opened Meir Diamonds in a refurbished former estate agent's office on the
00:16north end of Gosforth High Street, aiming to bring a mix of traditional craftsmanship
00:21and modern service to the area. I'm Wazim Muir from Meir Diamonds
00:26on Gosforth High Street. I'm a jeweller, been a jeweller my whole life. From a very very young age,
00:34my dad's been a jeweller since before I was born, as was my granddad, my great granddad and my great
00:40great granddad. So it's a family trade. I'd taken out probably about nine years from the trade to do
00:47fish and ships at the Harbour View. It's probably where people might recognise me. The Harbour View
00:52Chippy in Seton Sluice is a very popular chippy that most people in the region will have
00:56heard of, as it's especially famous for its Good Friday queues, where they would go above and beyond
01:01to provide entertainment for their patient customers who are queuing for Good Friday.
01:05But yeah, I've come back into the family business and opened up a diamond shop on Gosforth High Street.
01:10Spent a lot of time working at jewellers, being trained at jewellers, as well as my dad's place.
01:15I was at the Northern Goldsmiths for several years, where I went from a Saturday boy to being a manager
01:21of the store. And we took that business from me and a group of a team, a lovely team. I took it from
01:27a £6 million business into a £10 million business, which is fantastic. I then went into the fish and
01:33chip trade and again was a massive success. I was just spending a lot of hours there. I was spending
01:3880 plus hours there a week and not spending any time with my young family. So that's the main decision
01:43why I decided to come back into the jewellery trade. But it's also something that I love and I'm
01:47passionate of. Because I'm a working jeweller, I just love creating new and beautiful things.
01:52And having to start doing that again when we've only been open for four weeks, I absolutely love it.
01:57So services-wise, we do almost anything and everything anyone wants. So I can make bespoke
02:02rings. I've literally got a couple on the go and already made one for a lovely lady called Jo.
02:09We sell watches, source watches, Rolex watches, Breitling, Amiga, Cartier,
02:14chain repairs, ring sizings, rhodium plating. Even if your jewellery is looking a little bit
02:20worn out and tired, I can get it cleaned and polished up for you to make it look brand new.
02:24As well as doing engagement rings, wedding bands and anything to do with really jewellery and watches,
02:29I'm happy to help anyone. I'd say the secret of success, personally, and speaking to my dad about
02:34this as well, he's the one who's been doing it for a very, very long time, is just honesty.
02:39And it's working with your clients, giving them what they want, what they need, being completely
02:43honest with them and knowing that at the end of the day, you're still only going to have that
02:48one pasta meal, that one pizza at the end of the day. You've got to do enough to make sure your
02:54business is running, but do enough to make sure that your customers are 100% happy as well.
