Hablamos con Madeline Sharafian (directora) y Mary Alice Drumm (productora) sobre ELIO, la nueva película de Pixar: sus referencias al cine de ciencia ficción, la investigación de vida extraterrestre y mucho más.
Transcripción
00:00Well, hello guys, it's Gonzalo from Hypertextual in Spain. First of all, congratulations because the movie is so amazing.
00:05So, I don't know, I really loved it.
00:07Thank you.
00:09The first thing I want to ask you is about the creative process of this movie because it's the first, well, I don't know if it's the first, but one of the first science fiction movies for Pixar.
00:20So I want to know how much did you have to read or study about, you know, space and astronauts and things like that?
00:26Yeah, I think for research
00:30I can talk about that
00:31Maybe Maddie can talk about films
00:33But at Pixar we always love to do a lot of research
00:36As much as we can
00:36And my joke is we wanted to go to an alien planet
00:39But we couldn't find one
00:40But we did go to military bases
00:42And we did get to go to speak to a lot of orbital analysts
00:46We talked to astronomers
00:47We talked to the SETI organization
00:49The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
00:51And then for kind of some of the ideas
00:54For the actual aliens
00:55We looked at deep sea creatures
00:57Or microorganisms
00:58Because some of those look like aliens
01:00So if you look at like the tardigrade
01:02Or the water bear
01:03It's this tiny microorganism
01:05And that's what Glordin is based on, right?
01:07And if you go deep, deep in the sea
01:09There's a lot of creatures
01:10That are actually bioluminescent
01:13And so Harley took that
01:14And that kind of was some of the sparks
01:16That created the world for us
01:18But yeah, alien movies
01:19I mean, I'm a fan
01:20But I think Maddie's even a bigger fan
01:22Yeah, I think for me
01:24The most exciting thing
01:26About jumping into a sci-fi movie
01:28Was getting to break down
01:30The ones that I love
01:32And see like
01:33Why do they look the way that they do
01:35And why do they feel the way that they do
01:37And for us
01:39For our DPs as well
01:41Derek Williams
01:42And Jordan Rempel
01:43When we sat down and re-watched
01:46Like Close Encounters
01:48Which had a lot of things
01:49That we wanted to emulate
01:50We were like
01:51What is this
01:52Beyond just the plot
01:53Which is awesome and fun
01:54What is this flavor?
01:55Like there's just something
01:56About the atmosphere
01:57And the tone of this film
01:59That we want to capture
02:00And I remember Jordan broke down
02:02He was like
02:02Okay, they're using anamorphic lenses
02:04The shadows are deep and dark
02:06The way that things are framed
02:08And staged is very dramatic
02:09In that Spielbergian way
02:11But also there was this other thing
02:12That we were like
02:13That just kept popping up
02:15Which is in these Spielberg movies
02:17There's a lot of mist
02:18There's like atmosphere
02:20And you don't really know
02:22Where it's coming from
02:22Like you could just be
02:23In any random room
02:25In a house
02:27And there's like mist
02:28And there's just something
02:29About that
02:30It was almost like
02:31A romantic
02:32Like his sci-fi movies
02:35And a lot of the ones
02:36That Domi and I
02:37Are fans of
02:37Almost have a romance
02:38To the way that they're shot
02:40And we were really inspired
02:42By that
02:42So we took all of those elements
02:44And tried to layer them
02:46Into Elio
02:47So even if you're not
02:48Fully aware of it
02:49There's something about
02:50The look of the film
02:51That makes you reminiscent
02:52Of those
02:54You know, our favorites
02:55Like E.T.
02:56Close Encounters
02:57Even, you know, The Thing
02:58And Alien
03:00Like all of those films
03:01Had a shared visual sense
03:03That we really wanted
03:04To try to capture
03:05How amazing is that?
03:08This is precisely
03:09What I wanted to ask you now
03:10Because this movie
03:11Is full of references
03:13For another science fiction movie
03:14As a science fiction nerd
03:17I loved it
03:17Yeah
03:18I wanted to ask you
03:19Which ones were
03:20Your favorite ones?
03:22Which ones that you
03:23When you were doing the movie
03:24You were thinking
03:25Like, this has to be there
03:26This has to be there
03:27Yeah
03:27I think for us
03:29The
03:29The clone character
03:33Elio's clone
03:34Really got us
03:35You know
03:35Put us in mind
03:36Of The Thing
03:37And
03:38And just those
03:39Classic alien sci-fi
03:41Horror moments
03:42Of like
03:42You're living with something
03:44That's not
03:44That's not a human
03:46That's not a person
03:47And we loved the idea
03:48That while Elio's having
03:49You know
03:50His beautiful grand adventure
03:51In space
03:51That Olga's kind of living
03:52In a more horrifying version
03:55Of a sci-fi movie
03:56But since you get the chance
03:58To meet the clone
03:59Before
04:00You know
04:01Before you enter that
04:02That
04:02You know
04:02Second B plot
04:04You know
04:05As the audience
04:05He's a nice guy
04:06I've met him
04:07You know
04:07He's sweet
04:08Olga has nothing to worry about
04:10But Olga doesn't know that
04:11And I feel like
04:11There's a lot of humor
04:12In watching her
04:14Slowly discover
04:15You know
04:15This isn't my boy
04:17And it also served
04:18A great
04:19Character development purpose
04:21As Olga realizes
04:23That she did know Elio
04:25Better than she thought
04:26And she was a good parent
04:28And she had all those tools
04:30As she realizes that
04:31You know
04:32Maybe she's living
04:32With a pod person
04:34So those
04:35Those scenes
04:36Were some of the most fun
04:37To make
04:38And to really crank
04:39The
04:40Sci-fi
04:42Thriller
04:44Wheel
04:45All the way
04:45To 11
04:46So yeah
04:47Those are some
04:47Of our favorites
04:48Yeah I love
04:49How knowledgeable
04:50Maddie and Domi are
04:51And then how they
04:51Take some of the tropes
04:52And turn them upside down
04:54Like the abduction scene
04:55We've seen it a million times
04:56Before
04:56But their idea
04:58Of like he wants
04:58To be abducted
04:59It's just
05:00It's just classic
05:01It's just
05:01It's taking something
05:03And plussing it
05:04And that's what they do
05:04Throughout the whole movie
05:05Yeah and it works
05:06It works
05:07It works
05:07Amazingly
05:08Now let's go
05:10To the other side
05:10Because now I want
05:11To ask you guys
05:11Which was the
05:12The hardest part
05:13Of making this movie
05:14Because of course
05:15Making a movie
05:16Is never easy
05:17But if you had to say
05:19That this was
05:19That thing
05:21That was particularly
05:22Hard for you guys
05:22Which one was it
05:23Yeah I think
05:25Time
05:26For a production
05:27It's always time
05:28And trying to give
05:29Maddie and Domi
05:30As much time
05:30With the story
05:31And I think the story
05:32Is always a focus
05:33At Pixar
05:34It's the main focus
05:35Right Maddie
05:36Yeah I think for us
05:38The hardest part
05:40Was helping the audience
05:42Understand as quickly
05:44As possible
05:44Why Elio loved space
05:46So much
05:47We knew on paper
05:48About you know
05:50His background
05:50His loss of his parents
05:52And we kept trying
05:54To explain it
05:54With dialogue
05:55But there's just
05:56Something that wasn't
05:57Clicking
05:57And we showed it
05:58To audiences
05:58And they were like
05:59Yeah I love it
06:00But I don't get it
06:01Like there's
06:02There was just
06:02Something they were missing
06:03And they think
06:04You know
06:04They were like
06:05What if we see
06:05A montage
06:06Of his life
06:07And we're like
06:07No you think
06:08You want that
06:08But you don't
06:09So we had to
06:10We had to
06:12This prologue scene
06:14That appears
06:15At the very beginning
06:15Of the film
06:16Was something
06:17That came very late
06:19And it was
06:21It came from
06:22A story artist
06:23On the team
06:24Named Dan Park
06:25Who was pitching
06:27The idea of a planetarium
06:28As a really visual
06:30Way to show
06:31Elio fall in love
06:32With space
06:34And we love
06:35How it eases
06:37The audience
06:37Into the film
06:38It's not super
06:40Dialogue heavy
06:40And it's really
06:41All about feeling
06:42And not about
06:43Exposition
06:44Or dialogue
06:45Which we had been
06:46Kind of stuck on before
06:47So once we placed
06:49That scene
06:49In a lot of other
06:51Things started
06:52To fall into place
06:54But that took
06:55A really long time
06:56And only came together
06:57Truly in the final
06:58Moments
06:59Which is sort of terrifying
07:00But at least
07:01We did it
07:02Smart move
07:04Because it's so beautiful
07:05It's an amazing
07:06Start for the movie
07:07Now I want to ask you
07:08About the
07:09I'm really interested
07:10In both of your perspectives
07:11As director and producer
07:13Because I want to ask you
07:14About the actual situation
07:15At Pixar
07:16Because
07:17From now on
07:19I think
07:19We are going to have
07:20Several sequels
07:22Instead of
07:23Original Mobile
07:23So I would like to
07:24Hear your take on that
07:26Because we have
07:26Third story
07:27Incredibles Coco
07:28Yeah
07:30I think at Pixar
07:32We talk about
07:32How we're always
07:33Trying to do a balance
07:34Because you know
07:35As a movie goer
07:36I might be like
07:37Wow there's so many sequels
07:38But then someone says
07:40Coco too
07:40I'm like
07:40Oh my god
07:41I want to see Coco too
07:42So I love working at Pixar
07:44Because we do a balance
07:45And so I think
07:47We've announced
07:48Some sequels
07:48But we're still
07:49Making great originals
07:50The next movie
07:51Coming out after us
07:52Has been announced
07:53Called Hoppers
07:54Which we're big fans of
07:55So it's always a balance
07:57And I think
07:58At the end of the day
07:59For us
08:00It's all about
08:01Creating amazing characters
08:02So Inside Out 2
08:03Is a sequel
08:04But you get a new character
08:05Of anxiety
08:06That you fall in love with
08:07And I think
08:08For Elio
08:08We feel like
08:09Lorden
08:09And other characters
08:10We're making
08:11Are characters
08:12That people hopefully
08:13Will fall in love with
08:14Yeah
08:15We're very
08:16I think very clear
08:17And we talk about it
08:18As a studio
08:18That originality
08:20Is a really big part
08:22Of why Pixar
08:22Exists and was successful
08:24In the first place
08:25But yeah
08:26Like Mary Alice said
08:27I would say
08:28Toy Story 3
08:29Is one of my favorite movies
08:30We've ever made
08:31So I think
08:31There is
08:32As long as we keep
08:34Our bar for quality
08:36As high as we can
08:38And we approach
08:38Originals and sequels
08:40With the same level
08:41Of you know
08:43Caution
08:45And make sure
08:46That we're jumping
08:46Through all the hoops
08:47That we need to jump through
08:48To make it worthy
08:50As a standalone
08:51I think you know
08:53Hopefully we're still
08:53On the path
08:54To make amazing movies
08:55Whichever one
08:57They happen to be
08:58But we're still
