1 Samuel 1:1-20 (KJV) Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

00:001 Samuel 13 Saul reigned one year, and when he had reigned two years over Israel, Saul
00:09chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash, and
00:14in Mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah, Benjamin, and the rest
00:19of the people he sent every man to his tent.
00:22And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard
00:28of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
00:34And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel
00:40also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul
00:46to Gilgal. And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
00:53chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude.
00:59And they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-Avon. When the men of Israel
01:06saw that they were in a strait, for the people were distressed, then the people did hide themselves
01:11in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. And some of the
01:17Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal,
01:23and all the people followed him, trembling. And he tarried seven days according to the set
01:28time that Samuel had appointed. But Samuel came not to Gilgal, and the people were scattered
01:34from him. And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he
01:41offered the burnt offering. And it came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering
01:45the burnt offering. Behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
01:52And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered
01:59from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered
02:04themselves together at Michmash. Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to
02:10Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord. I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt
02:16offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly. Thou hast not kept the commandment of
02:24the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee. For now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon
02:30Israel for ever. But now thy kingdom shall not continue. The Lord hath sought him a man after his
02:36own heart. And the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not
02:41kept that which the Lord commanded thee. And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of
02:48Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him about six hundred men. And Saul
02:55and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with him, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin.
03:01But the Philistines encamped in Michmash. And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines
03:06in three companies. One company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of
03:13Shual. And another company turned the way to Bethhoron. And another company turned to the way of the
03:19border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim, toward the wilderness. Now there was no smith found
03:25throughout all the land of Israel. For the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords
03:31or spears. But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen every man his share,
03:38and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the
03:44coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. So it came to pass in the day
03:50of battle that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were
03:55with Saul and Jonathan. But with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. And the garrison
04:02of the Philistines went out, to the passage of Michmash.
