00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and I'm going to be using the term mission pretty loosely.
00:09These are the 10 hardest video game missions of the century so far.
00:13From the year 2000 to the year now, we're looking at all those levels, sections, and
00:17yes, of course, missions that made us want to sell our consoles and move into the mountains.
00:22Number 10, the virus sequence near Automata.
00:30Nier Automata is amazing, but it has plenty of frustrating moments, especially during
00:42your third playthrough.
00:44One of the most frustrating sections has you controlling 2B during the painfully drawn-out
00:49virus sequence.
00:50With the virus taking over, your vision is distorted, you're limping for nearly 20 minutes,
00:54most controls are locked, and a timer constantly ticks down.
00:58F*** that.
00:58There are no checkpoints, enemies constantly knock you down, and the only guidance is a
01:03vague map marker.
01:04Miss your path, and you'll likely fall, get stuck, burn your house to the ground, kill
01:08your whole family, move to Costa Rica, and start a new life.
01:11Possibly.
01:20Number 9, Cortana Halo 3.
01:22Chief, I'll round up our survivors, fall back to the dawn.
01:29Let's start here.
01:30Halo is one of the greatest series of all time, and its third entry is home to one of
01:35the most infamously difficult levels of all time, Cortana.
01:39Right from the jump, you're overwhelmed by the flood, attacking from every direction with
01:43a mix of combat forms and the grotesque pure forms.
01:46The one silver lining, it's relatively short, so the frustration and chaos don't last too
01:50long, though for many players, even that felt like an eternity.
01:53Getting shot in the leg only takes a fraction of a second, doesn't mean the pain doesn't
01:57stick with you for a long time.
01:58In fact, it sticks with you just long enough to get high by WatchMojo just so you can bitch
02:02about it.
02:03I'm bitching about it, that's what I'm saying.
02:04Number 8, Recovering the Plans, Star Wars Battlefront 2.
02:15The original Star Wars Battlefront 2 is often considered one of the greatest games ever made,
02:23but even a perfect plum is going to have a super hard stone right in the middle of it.
02:26Recovering the Plans aboard the Tantive IV is Battlefront 2's giant hard stone.
02:31The narrow hallways and tight corners make combat chaotic, even when you get to play
02:36as Darth Vader.
02:36Things only get harder as you progress, with an endless wave of Rebel troops constantly
02:41respawning in those tight spaces.
02:43To make matters worse, if they could get worse, your Stormtrooper allies stop respawning towards
02:47the end, while the Rebel AI just keeps coming.
02:50Do I need to tell you guys why that's frustrating?
02:52Take him out!
02:53Target later!
02:55This is an enemy!
02:57Watch it!
02:57Try first!
02:58Roar!
02:59Oh my god!
03:00Number 7, Code Talker Mission, Metal Gear Solid V, The Phantom Pain.
03:12In MGS5, Snake is tasked with locating the Navajo biologist Code Talker and extracting him.
03:18It kicks off with an encounter against the Skull Snipers, otherwise known as throwing you
03:22in the deep end.
03:23You'll need to outmaneuver or out-snipe them to get through.
03:26From there, Snake has to infiltrate a heavily guarded mansion and sneak into the basement.
03:30If you didn't take down the Skulls earlier, they'll reappear, possess the guards and relentlessly
03:34pursue you during the escape.
03:36It's poo.
03:36Number 6, Supply Lines, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
03:52Hey Z, where you at?
03:54Go away Carl, I'm very very busy back here.
03:57Top secret stuff, not for your eyes.
03:59Too sensitive.
04:00If you thought flying a full-size plane in GTA 3 was tough, then you clearly haven't
04:05played Supply Lines in GTA San Andreas.
04:07This mission has you remotely pilot a tiny toy plane, and somehow, it's the hardest mission
04:12in the game.
04:13The controls are awkward, sure, but the real problem is how fragile the goddamn plane is.
04:17It can be destroyed in seconds, and to make things worse, it burns through fuel fast.
04:22Run out mid-mission and you're forced to restart from the beginning, no matter how far you got.
04:26Which may have been the salt in the wound that solidified this mission in our minds.
04:31Smell it!
04:32You know that ozone smell?
04:35Smells like victory.
04:38Number 5, Hunting the Valkyries, God of War.
04:41A Valkyrie?
04:43Impresoned?
04:45She actually did it.
04:46A Valkyrie?
04:48This is less of a singular mission, but rather a collection of fights that count towards a
04:52larger quest.
04:53Hunting the Valkyries in God of War is tough, because each fight is essentially a high-level
04:57boss battle, demanding a pretty solid mastery of the game's combat mechanics.
05:01Every Valkyrie has a unique moveset with unpredictable attacks that end your fight in an instant.
05:07Their speed, aggression, and ability to chain devastating combos leave little room for error.
05:11On top of that, limited healing options and the need to react on instinct make each encounter
05:16feel intense and unforgiving.
05:18The ultimate challenge, the Valkyrie Queen, combines all previous tactics into one hemorrhoid-inducing
05:24encounter.
05:29Freedom.
05:31Where is your queen?
05:33My queen?
05:34She did this to you.
05:36She's letting the dead take over Midgar.
05:38Number 4, the suicide mission, Mass Effect 2.
05:41The Normandy may not survive the Omega-4 relay.
05:44Once we are en route, we are committed.
05:46The collectors took my people.
05:49Time to go get them back.
05:50Serving as the climax of every major quest in Mass Effect 2, the suicide mission reflects
05:55choices made not just during the mission itself, but also those made shortly before
05:59and even much earlier in the game.
06:01If players ignore key decisions or neglect minor seeming upgrades to the Norma DSR 2, they
06:06risk losing squad members, losses that carry over into Mass Effect 3.
06:11Entering the mission unprepared can force players to replay significant portions of the game
06:15to secure the necessary resources to make the right calls.
06:18Sure, it's not hard from technical gameplay, but it is hard to get right.
06:23It's more like a test at school.
06:25A test that I keep goddamn failing.
06:27Number 3, Alien Autotopsy Part 3, The Simpsons Hit and Run.
06:44The Simpsons Might Not Be Everyone's Cup of Tea, but there's no denying how enjoyable
06:55The Simpsons Hit and Run was, becoming infamous as the longest-begged-for remaster of all time.
07:02Seriously, how has this not been re-released?
07:04In the final mission, Alien Autotopsy Part 3, players have to deliver trucks of nuclear
07:08waste to an alien ship, while racing against a tight time limit.
07:12Mess up and it's game over.
07:13To make matters worse, the timer continues during the cutscene, so if you don't arrive
07:17with enough time to spare, you're doomed to fail right at the finish line.
07:21It's a frustrating end to an otherwise fun game that is infamous for stopping players
07:25from experiencing the ending.
07:27I feel bad.
07:30Number 2, Mile High Club Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare.
07:34Tango down in Section 1 Alpha.
07:37Hostile neutralized.
07:38The Mile High Club mission in Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare is tough, but we're focusing
07:44on veteran difficulty, the difficulty that has become infamous with gamers as one of
07:48the hardest difficulty modes available in a game.
07:51This particular mission is notoriously hard because it combines extreme time pressure
07:55with a brutal enemy AI.
07:57You have just seconds to clear a cramped airplane filled with enemies who have pinpoint accuracy
08:03and can drop you in a flash.
08:04There's simply no room for error.
08:06Every shot and movement must be perfect.
08:09It's overall fairly short, but it's also fairly goddamn annoying.

08:42Number 1 Pantheon of Hallownest Hollow Knight
08:46Marathon experiences are almost always the hardest things you can experience in a game
08:57as they require focus for longer than 10 minutes, with some marathon challenges requiring
09:01the player to be locked in for hours.
09:04The Pantheon of Hallownest in Hollow Knight is brutally hard because it demands perfection
09:09across an incredibly long boss rush featuring nearly every major boss in the game, over
09:1340 in total, without saving or healing between most of these fights.
09:18Even harder versions of bosses appear, requiring mastery of their patterns and reflexes.
09:22A single mistake can cost everything, forcing you to start over.
09:26And starting over is what stops most players from even attempting this bullsh**t.
