00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we'll be discussing 10 instances where actors have shared both
00:10protagonistic and antagonistic relationships.
00:17A few spoilers may follow.
00:20Ocean's Franchise and Burn After Reading
00:22Brad Pitt and George Clooney
00:24The effortless cool of the Ocean's franchise definitely fits like a glove over the public
00:30personas of both Brad Pitt and George Clooney.
00:32That's why we have to be very careful, very precise, well-funded.
00:36This spiritual continuation of Frank Sinatra's original Rat Pack vehicle saw multiple sequels
00:42over the years, with fans responding to the pair's obvious on-screen chemistry.
00:46The elevator won't move without authorized fingerprint identification.
00:50Which we can't fake.
00:51And vocal confirmation from both the security system within the Bellagio and the vault below.
00:57Which we won't get.
00:58It's a whole different kettle of fish comparing the Ocean's series' Buddy Buddy atmosphere to 2008's Burn After Reading.
01:05Here, Pitt's character of Chad Feldheimer meets an inglorious end at the barrel of Clooney's pistol.
01:11It's played for darkly comedic laughs thanks to the itchy trigger finger of Clooney's Harry Pferrer,
01:16while also being notably memorable to boot.
01:21Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton
01:28The Terminator and Terminator 2 Judgment Day
01:31Skynet fights back.
01:33Yes, it launches its missiles against the targets in Russia.
01:37Fans of this long-running science fiction franchise know all too well that it isn't only these first two films
01:43that make a big deal out of the relationship between its two stars.
01:47Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 is out to destroy Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor in the original Terminator,
01:53so that her son John never arrives to lead the revolution against Skynet.
01:58So, when Schwarzenegger returns to the 1991 sequel as a savior to both Sarah and John, the former,
02:04well, she takes a little convincing.
02:07Come with me if you want to live.
02:09It's okay, Mom. He's here to help.
02:11Schwarzenegger's T-800 would enjoy diminishing returns in future Terminator sequels.
02:16She hasn't noticed that you weigh 400 pounds, that you never sleep.
02:20Our relationship is not physical.
02:22She appreciated that they could change diapers efficiently and without any complaints.
02:27But this double shot definitely bowled over fans back in the day.
02:31Silver Linings Playbook in American Hustle
02:33Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence
02:36Writer-director David O. Russell cast Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence back-to-back
02:41in the film's Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
02:44Look, I had a really good time tonight, and I think you're really pretty, but I'm married, okay?
02:51You're married.
02:54So am I.
02:55The former paired up Cooper and Lawrence as a romantic couple,
02:58while the latter saw the former's FBI agent Richie DeMaso
03:02serving as the catalyst for getting the storyline ball rolling.
03:06Jennifer Lawrence's Rosalind Rosenfeld is incensed at her husband Irving's affair
03:11with Sidney Prosser, and winds up having one of her own.
03:14And all I've ever wanted you to do is love me.
03:17That's all I've ever wanted.
03:19That's all I've ever wanted.
03:19That's all I've ever wanted.
03:19That's all I've ever wanted.
03:19That's all I've ever wanted to stay married and be here to love me.
03:22DeMaso, in the meantime, is antagonistic to both the Rosenfelds and Prosser,
03:27with the end results being delivered in Russell's typically witty and chaotic style.
03:31We may call you as a witness, but otherwise you're done.
03:33I think you better go home.
03:36Stop.
03:37Go on home, Richie.
03:37Romancing the Stone and The War of the Roses – Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner
03:43We haven't passed any point of no return.
03:47I have.
03:48The Roses may be married at the beginning of the 1989 film that bears their surname,
03:53but make no mistake, it's not really a two-way street of affection.
03:57In fact, the contentious divorce undergone by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner's characters
04:02eventually becomes an over-the-top area of disaster.
04:06You were happy because I was dead?
04:09I was happy to be free, like a weight had been lifted.
04:14The pair's on-screen chemistry remained strong through it all, however,
04:18thanks in part to the pair of films where Douglas and Turner were will-they-won't-they love interests.
04:23At least I can do it by some dinner.
04:25Looks like it's going to be a hell of a party.
04:27I'd like that.
04:28Romancing the Stone and its sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, were great adventure comedies
04:33with a believable romance between both actors.
04:36So it just sort of makes sense that Douglas and Turner were able to bring that energy back years later.
04:41I couldn't stop thinking about you.
04:44I even read one of your books.
04:47Then you know how they all end.
04:48Die Hard with a Vengeance and Unbreakable
04:51Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson
04:53The initial meeting between Bruce Willis' John McClane and Samuel L. Jackson's Zeus Carver
05:04isn't exactly pleasant,
05:06but the pair do eventually go on to trust each other in this third Die Hard movie.
05:10Yeah, that's what I can do.
05:11Is that it?
05:122-4-0-1?
05:12That's it.
05:13Dial 5-5-5-2-4-0-1.
05:17No, wait!
05:18Wait!
05:18It's a trick!
05:19It's a trick!
05:19McClane and Carver actually wind up making a great team,
05:23but director M. Night Shyamalan also seemed to know that they'd make great enemies as well.
05:28Jackson was cast as Elijah Price,
05:30aka Mr. Glass,
05:32the villain in Shyamalan's modern-day superhero story
05:35that's pitted against Willis' David Dunn.
05:37The twist of that film proved to be so memorable
05:40that Shyamalan would continue the pair's story with Split in 2016
05:44before giving Jackson his own movie with 2019's Glass.
05:48The Last Duel and Good Will Hunting, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
05:57Movie fans have been used to the pairing of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
06:11ever since Good Will Hunting hit theaters back in 1997.
06:15The friends and collaborators were displayed very differently in 2021's The Last Duel, however.
06:21Affleck and Damon were pitted in an adversarial light.
06:24You say to me I am not the captain here!
06:28I say to you whatever I like.
06:30I decide who's the captain of Ben.
06:32A script adapting the 2004 book The Last Duel,
06:35a true story of crime, scandal, and trial by combat in medieval France
06:39by Eric Yeager,
06:41features Affleck primarily in a supporting role against Damon's top billing.
06:45But it's still an interesting visual to see these real-life besties
06:49dropped into a medieval historical drama.
06:51Heaven and Earth!
06:55Heaven and Earth what?
06:59Moonraker and the Spy Who Loved Me
07:02Sir Roger Moore and Richard Keel
07:04The James Bond movies were never above a little pop culture synergy,
07:09as evidenced by the Star Wars-influenced space setting of the films like Moonraker.
07:13That film also featured the return of Richard Keel as Jaws,
07:18an infamous Bond villain henchman boasting metal teeth
07:21who was likely intended to piggyback off the success of Steven Spielberg's film.
07:31That character apparently perished at the end of The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977,
07:37yet Sir Roger Moore's 007 successfully convinces Jaws to come to his aid in Moonraker.
07:43That film even gave Jaws a love interest,
07:46as the newly heroic henchman made the most out of his resurrection.
07:50Well, here's to us.
07:54Alice in Wonderland and Ocean's 8
07:56Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway
07:59Ocean's 8, a female-centered spin-off,
08:11may not feature Brad Pitt or George Clooney amongst its cast,
08:15but it did serve as another venue for Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway to act against each other.
08:21What inspired you for tonight's look?
08:23This time, Carter and Hathaway weren't playing queens within the world of Alice in Wonderland,
08:32but instead as co-conspirators in director Gary Ross's heist story.
08:37Both films feature great performances from Carter and Hathaway,
08:41whether they be part of Tim Burton's twisted imagination and elaborate visuals,
08:45or within the Ocean's franchise's quirky sense of cool.
08:57No Country for Old Men and Dune
08:59Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin
09:02The fatalistic themes behind the Coen brothers' 2007 film No Country for Old Men
09:08never really offer up a chance for Josh Brolin's Llewellyn Moss
09:11to survive against his inevitable conflict with Javier Bardem's methodical Anton Chigurh.
09:17The latter is simply going to catch up to Moss and kill him,
09:20and there's little Brolin's character can do except create space and extend what little time he has left.
09:29Don't feel too bad for Brolin and Bardem, however.
09:32Since Denis Villeneuve's 2021 adaptation of Dune showcased the pair in a more collaborative light.
09:38Sure, Brolin's Gurney Halleck isn't exactly best buddies with Bardem's Stilgar,
09:43but at least they're not out to actively murder one another.
09:46You will address the duke as my lord or sire.
09:49Gurney, just a moment.

10:07Heat and Righteous Kill
10:08Al Pacino and Robert De Niro
10:10The mere thought of a silver screen containing the talents of both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro
10:16seem unthinkable until films like The Godfather Part 2, and particularly Heat,
10:21made that dream a reality.
10:23You see me doing thrill-seeker liquor store hold-ups with a Born to Lose tattoo on my chest?
10:28No, I do not.
10:30Right.
10:31Pacino and De Niro were perfect foils for Heat,
10:34which marked the first time the pair actually shared a screen,
10:37thanks to the flashback narrative of The Godfather Part 2 keeping them separate.
10:41Fast-forwarding to 2008 and Righteous Kill,
10:44we see Pacino and De Niro working together
10:47as two New York City cops on the trail of a serial killer.
10:52Great stuff.
10:55This latter film wasn't nearly as acclaimed as Heat,
10:58but it was still a big deal to see these two legends collaborating on screen.
11:02I mean, considering the circumstances, why not?
11:06No need to thank me.
11:07Can you think of any other great examples of actors being built differently
11:10over the course of their careers?
