00:09And I'm a Muslim.
00:10No matter who you are, it's important to protect your private data and your civil liberties while using technology.
00:18We use our phones a lot.
00:20We text our friends, we take photos, we email co-workers.
00:24Much of what we say is very personal and very private.
00:26Your phone carrier and companies like Google and Facebook can read the messages that you send and receive.
00:33This information can be accessed by police, the FBI, and spy agencies like the NSA.
00:39But there's an easy step you can take to make sure your private conversations actually stay private.
00:45Use end-to-end encryption.
00:47This means that anything you send gets scrambled in such a way that only the intended recipient can unscramble it.
00:52Signal is a free, open-source app that encrypts text messages, voice, and video calls.
00:59There are others, such as WhatsApp, but Signal is one of the best.
01:02I'll show you how to get started.
01:04Go to the Play Store on Android or the App Store on an iPhone and search for Signal Private Messenger by OpenWhisper Systems.
01:11The first time you open the Signal app, you need to register your phone number.
01:16Now, you can immediately start sending encrypted messages to any friend who also has the app.
01:21You could also use Signal to have group conversations.
01:24And you can set messages to disappear from both devices after a specified amount of time.
01:29Signal lets you verify that your conversations are secure by comparing safety numbers.
01:34These are numerical codes that are unique to each one of your contacts.
01:38If the safety numbers you see match the numbers your friend sees, the conversation is secure.
01:44You only have to verify safety numbers once to get started.
01:47If possible, verify when you're together in the same room.
01:50You can do this quickly and easily by scanning QR codes.
01:54From time to time, Signal might tell you that a friend's safety numbers have changed.
01:58This normally just means that your friend switched to a new phone,
02:01but it's also possible that it could mean someone is attacking the encryption.
02:04To be safe, you should re-verify safety numbers with your friend each time this happens.
02:10You can't send encrypted messages to people who aren't on Signal.
02:13So get all your friends to install the app, too.
02:16If you're an activist, get everyone at your next meeting to install the app.
02:19If you're a journalist, tell your sources and editors.
02:23If you're running for office, consider using Signal to communicate with your campaign staff.
02:27Of course, no app can stop someone from picking up your phone and reading all your communications.
02:33The only way to prevent that is by making sure you lock your phone with a strong passcode.
