Guatemalan National Civil Police (PNC) riot police violently repressed a peaceful protest against controversial mining licenses in the Sierra de las Minas, firing tear gas and leaving at least one person seriously injured. The victim, identified as the son of a local community leader, was hospitalized in critical condition following the repression, which took place in front of the vice mayor's office in Rabinal, where residents had gathered to oppose the state-approved mining projects.

00:00And we go now to Guatemala as riot police from the National Civil Police violently repressed a peaceful protest against mining licenses in the Santa Cruz mountain range with tear gas, leaving one person seriously injured.
00:13The victim, who is in serious condition, is the son of community journalist Raimundo Amador.
00:19The incident occurred in front of the Río Dulce deputy mayor's office, where neighbors had gathered to express their opposition to authorized mining projects.
00:28Human rights organizations have demanded an immediate investigation, as well as guarantees for the exercise of social protest and freedom of the press.
