Tension gripped Mendiola on Sunday, September 21, as anti-corruption demonstrations turned violent, resulting in clashes between protesters and police that left dozens injured and several vehicles damaged.

The protest, which coincided with the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, drew thousands of demonstrators denouncing alleged anomalies in government infrastructure projects. While most assemblies across Metro Manila remained peaceful, disorder broke out in Mendiola after masked individuals hurled stones and bottles at riot police and set fire to tires near the barricades at Ayala Bridge.
