Sadiq Khan urged to rescue cash-strapped Notting Hill Carnival
Transcript
00:00Should the government fund an event that two people died at last year, you're quite right, it is a victim of its own success.
00:07And we just can't cope with more people in those small streets.
00:12It is a disaster waiting to happen.
00:15It's very unpalatable for it to be stopped.
00:18Having said that, it is so dangerous there now.
00:21And quite frankly, any police officer you speak to doesn't want to go.
00:25So I just wonder whether you think that something else should happen there.
00:31So I've seen images of some of the crowds at some parts of the day and watching them made me frightened.
00:41And one of the advantages we have is expertise based on the tragedy of what happened at Hillsborough.
00:48And God forbid, we now know there's a concern around crushing and actions weren't taken to ensure we did whatever we could to minimise the possibility of that happening.
01:02So I support the Carnival Trust in asking the government for additional funding.
01:07My team is speaking to the government as I speak in relation to what help the government can give.
01:12I've got to be quite frank, though, with colleagues in the Assembly, as I always am.
01:15City Hall and the two councils have given the maximum we can financially, and so we would need the government to step in.
