USC Tight End Walter Matthews Talks About Getting His Body Better For This Coming Up Season And what He Did To Achieve that
Transcript
00:00So, Walter, you bulked up during the off season, like 272.
00:04I've heard you got 39-inch vertical.
00:05Do you still have that explosiveness after you bulked up?
00:08Probably so, yeah.
00:09Yeah.
00:13What was last year like for you, just kind of having to be patient and
00:17wait a little bit?
00:18I just waited for my time.
00:21I just waited for my time, just recovering and just getting back to it,
00:24learning the ropes, using it as an opportunity for you to really hone in.
00:29Really, like, get the offense and stuff.
00:35You've got the body, it looks like an offensive tackle, it's ready to bust out.
00:40What do you bring to the table playing tight and what can you bring to the table?
00:43Maybe some of the other guys don't.
00:47Definitely my size, I'm much bigger than everybody.
00:52Especially since I'm bigger than the linemen and much bigger than the cornerback.
00:55So, I think hopefully coaching using it like this match or just to be a versatile threat.
01:02Can you speak to just the dynamic, the tight end group and the amount of weapons that it has?
01:10I think we all have very unique skill sets on what we do best.
01:14And we can each be put in different parts of the field and still succeed.
01:22What's been the biggest adjustment for you since you've been here?
01:27Nothing really, I came here, I kind of knew what to expect when coming to LA.
01:32My dad used to live over here before I was born, so it's a place I really enjoy.
01:40What's been like working with Coach Savage?
01:44I like how he works on my weaknesses and also the way he coaches me.
01:49Because definitely I feel like my running needs a little bit of improvement.
01:53You know, he's really honing in on the small things I'm missing out on while I'm running
01:59my routes and my receiver skills, my receiving skills, so.
02:02What are some of the differences between him and Coach Hanson?
02:06Definitely, you know, they both came from different backgrounds.
02:10So, Savage, he worked with receivers, slot receivers.
02:13And Coach Hanson, he's worked with O-line and he has a big O-line background.
02:20Who's Walter off the football field, what are you into, what are some of your hobbies?
02:25I just, I don't really go out much, you know, I'm just a stay-at-home type of person.
02:30I don't really talk much, quiet, reserved.
02:33So, it's your kind of favorite restaurant out here?
02:42Not really, probably like Meat on Ocean on Santa Monica, probably my favorite.
02:48Definitely like the steak spot, Brazilian steak house.
02:51Are you a beach guy?
02:53A little bit, just kinda.
02:56So, you happened to go through last year and recover.
02:59How much more hungry does that make you entering this year?
03:02It's kind of carve out a role.
03:04Can you repeat it?
03:06How motivated are you coming off of last year, the carve out a role this year?
03:10I'm very motivated because, you know, I just look at myself in the mirror,
03:14how much I've bulked up, how far I've come, how far I've come.
03:18So, you know, I feel like I need to show up a few right now as I, you know, recovered and everything.
03:26Let's do one more.
03:27So, you're working on, you know, on your route running and your skills, you know,
03:30as a playmaker at a tight end.
03:31What is your comfortability with, obviously, your size in the run game
03:35and what do you bring in that aspect?
03:37Definitely blocking the, blocking the edges, six-tech, nine-techs on the run game,
03:43like outside zone, inside zone, and possibly, you know, yeah.
03:50Thanks.
03:51Zach, you're taking breath.
