Rachel Reeves' recent spending review promised £445 million for rail infrastructure in Wales,
00:08
and part of that includes five new train stations planned across South Wales.
00:12
Four of the proposed stations are between Cardiff and Newport,
00:15
with a fifth further east near Maega.
00:17
While some of these have been discussed for years,
00:19
they now have firmer backing from both UK and Welsh governments.
00:23
Starting in the east, Maega station is being pushed by local campaigners
00:27
aiming to reopen a station that closed in the 1960s.
00:30
It's part of Welsh Government's plans and now stands a better chance of becoming reality,
00:34
though no opening date is confirmed.
00:37
Closer to Newport, Llan Mwyn station is proposed near the former steelworks,
00:41
supporting new housing developments and acting as a park and ride for commuters.
00:45
A temporary station operated there during the 2010 Ryder Cup, giving it some transport history.
00:51
Further west, a new station near Somerton in Newport is also planned.
00:55
Additionally suggested in 2021, it's seen as a vital service for recent housing growth in the city's outskirts.
01:01
It's still in the early planning stages, though.
01:04
Next is Newport West, a station near Tredega House.
01:07
This would plug a transport gap with the nearest station, pie corner,
01:10
located away from the main Cardiff-Newport line.
01:13
It's aimed at improving local connectivity for the western side of the city.
01:17
The final and most advanced of the five is Cardiff East.
01:21
It's considered a priority within the South Wales Metro project and could be operational by 2028.
01:26
It would sit strategically between Cardiff and Newport to relieve pressure on other routes.
01:31
While the timeline for most of these stations remains completely uncertain,
01:35
the new investment gives South Wales a stronger chance of improving public transport links in the years ahead.
