00:00An update live from Friday, it is cut day at the 2025 United States Open at
00:06Oakmont where DRS the projected cut as we speak is four over par.
00:11What might it be at the end of this very long and brutal Friday at what the golfers
00:16playing it right now call the hardest course in the world and Oakmont showed
00:21its teeth in the opening round on Thursday.
00:25We saw some guys under par in JJ spawn around one leader at four under.
00:31But really through the rest of the day, it was difficult.
00:35Jon Rahm, the only guy with one of the five best prices pre-tournament to be under
00:40par in red figures on Thursday is already on the course right now.
00:45He is one over to his first four holes on this Friday back to even.
00:50Of course, you see Scotty Scheffler there as well.
00:53Now three over par in his opening round, the reigning United States Open champion,
00:57Bryson DeChambeau, also three over par.
01:00And Rory McIlroy, when we were live on air yesterday, DRS got off to a great start,
01:05but I think made triple later on in his round and fell all the way back to four over.
01:11Oakmont takes no prisoners.
01:13We saw that on a Thursday.
01:15We are seeing that early here on this Friday as well.
01:18Yeah, it's the expectations, right?
01:20Only eight golfers here, minus one or better in this tournament, which is unbelievable.
01:24Usually it's eight golfers in the first 20 minutes are already under par.
01:27And so, and he's one of the majors here, Augusta, whatever you have you.
01:30But at this tournament, it's just going to take, you got JJ spawn minus four under.
01:34What's his goal for the rest of the weekend?
01:36Just play par golf.
01:37He probably walks away with it.
01:38But as you said, you must hit every single fairway because if you don't,
01:42you are probably going to bogey that hole.
01:44Case in point, he's just talked about Rory McIlroy yesterday.
01:46Wow.
01:47Didn't expect him to have a great start here.
01:48Check in later in the day, completely fell off.
01:50Not because he played bag off because he played one bad shot on one hole here
01:54that gets you caught up in the rough where you just can't recover.
01:56That's the fun of this.
01:57Okay.
01:58Take your medicine.
01:59So many tournaments, right?
02:00Bam, like an Augusta, take your medicine, take the stroke penalty in a major.
02:03It's okay.
02:04You know, play for on a par five, a six, instead of a five here and not get yourself
02:08in trouble.
02:09That's not the case at this point.
02:10Like you put one ball in the fair off the fairway, which gets stuck in a bad spot in
02:14the rough.
02:15You're not, but you're like, Oh, that's triple bogey at this point.
02:17Now that's what you love.
02:18Two and three shot leads disappear immediately in this tournament.
02:22That's the fun of it.
02:24Yes, they certainly do DRS.
02:25So the pre round two odds, you saw JJ spawn being our round one leader, best round of the
02:31day for under 66 at a 12 to one price.
02:35It was tied for third best entering this Friday alongside one of the early stories at Oakmont
02:41and the 2025 us open a guy that has won a United States open.
02:46Two of them prior in five major championships in his career.
02:50That is Brooks Koepka.
02:51He remains in a tie for third at two under par.
02:55He was 12 to one entering this Friday in round number two, bogeyed his first hole, went
03:01back to back birdies on two and three now has courted another bogey.
03:06He falls back to even so far in his first six holes on this Friday, but DRS at two under
03:12Brooks Koepka, just two back Tristan Lawrence, the South African sandwiched in between a three
03:18under 67 and round number one.
03:21Yeah, it's good stuff overall too.
03:23Brooks Koepka, like welcome back here.
03:25Nice to know you.
03:26Used to be one of those dominant athletes.
03:27We were talking about like, maybe he was Scotty Scheffler before we saw Scotty Scheffler,
03:30but the fun always is here at the Fan Blue Sportsbook and many books here.
03:33Ben is what?
03:34Hey, look at that.
03:35Scheffler seven back.
03:36Ah, write him off.
03:37No, no, no, no, no.
03:38He's the favorite.
03:39He's the favorite to win this year.
03:40Now actually, Rahm just clicked there to a plus five 50 to take over.
03:43So maybe he's playing some good golf with some good shots right now, but Rahm right now,
03:46the favorite in the clubhouse.
03:47But again, just the laugh of I am seven shots back and I'm still expected to win this tournament.
03:52Not one, not one shot back, seven shots back and still the expectations will win this thing.
03:57Yep.
03:58Yeah.
03:59And DRS, Scotty Scheffler with a three over par.
04:01We're not used to saying over par for Scheffler at all.
04:05Certainly in major championships, that plus six 50 price entering round to second best behind John Rahm.
04:12Again, John Rahm, the favorite entering this second round.
04:16He is at even par.
04:18Scotty Scheffler one under through his opening four holes on this Friday.
04:23He is on the course as we speak right now outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
04:29Steady Scotty, right?
04:30Got off to a slow start of the PGA championship.
04:33Ended up winning the first Wanamaker trophy of his career by five shots.
04:38Scotty Scheffler is going to remain in the fight all weekend long.
04:42So let's look at those live odds.
04:44As DRS mentioned, plus five 50.
04:46John Rahm, the favorite by a dollar in front of Scheffler.
04:50Brooks Koepka.
04:51Now the third best price by himself at ten to one.
04:54J.J. Spahn yet to tee off on this Friday.
04:57That will come around twelve fifty two p.m. Eastern time.
05:00He will start on the back nine a little bit before one p.m. Eastern.
05:05He has an eleven to one price.
05:07That is the fourth best best round on the course right now for a variety of guys.
05:12DRS is two under early.
05:15Victor Hovland two under today tied for fifth one under for the tournament.
05:20Sam Burns two under today.
05:22He is even Daniel Berger two under today.
05:25Also even par alongside Sam Burns.
05:28And also you're taking a look at you.
05:30You still want to back a guy right with pedigree.
05:32Been there, done that.
05:33Has won a major championship and maybe multiple ones here.
05:35That's why I take a look at Brooks Koepka.
05:37We haven't heard from him for a while.
05:38Goes to live golf.
05:39Gets all that money and maybe settling in saying I got my money.
05:42How much more I need.
05:43I want a couple major championships.
05:44But if you remember won the open in 17 and 18.
05:47He's been there on these type of courses and had a lot of success.
05:49It has been a while.
05:50But you have a guy that's been there, done that.
05:52Those are the guys I want to keep my eyes open to.
05:54And Koepka playing really good golf early on.
05:56That's a name to watch.
05:57Finally, it was always a name to watch.
05:59And now it is again.
06:01He steps up in these moments, DRS.
06:03There is no doubt about it.
06:04He excels at major championship golf.
06:07When the going gets tough for most, that is where Brooks Koepka thrives.
06:11And just to say, right, he is even par today.
06:14He has courted a couple of birds, but a couple of bogeys on the card as well.
06:18His updated live round score over under 72 and a half.
06:24So you might be thinking, so right around even par?
06:26No.
06:27Par at Oakmont is 70, over under 72 and a half for a guy that is even.
06:33They are still expecting him to be a few over on this Friday.
06:38Koepka, a five to one price to be the leader after our opening two rounds at Oakmont.
06:44A little bit later, in just about an hour from now,
06:47we'll have Keith Stewart live from the media center at Oakmont.
06:50Tell us how this course is fairing, how it is playing,
06:54what we can expect here in the early morning hours on cut day Friday.
06:58And, of course, how difficult this course might become as it dries out
07:03and gets faster later on this Friday afternoon.
07:07In favor of the morning wave yesterday, Donnie, there is no doubt about it.
07:10Will it do the same on this Friday in our second round at the United States Open?
07:16Round number two already underway at Oakmont in the 2025 United States Open.
07:22It is cut day Friday outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
07:26where we find our guy Keith Stewart for a third consecutive day live
07:30in the media center at Oakmont with round two underway.
07:34Golfers on the course in this morning wave.
07:37Everybody trying to make as many red numbers as they can
07:40to stay in front of that projected cut line, the updated projected cut
07:45for over par at the very difficult test that is Oakmont.
07:50Keith, as always, we appreciate the time.
07:52Thanks for being here once again.
07:54Ben, Donnie, good morning.
07:56Good morning to everyone.
07:57And don't get to the projected cut line at plus four.
08:00Don't get too fixated on that.
08:03It's 2016.
08:04The last time we were here was plus six.
08:06And right now they're projecting better than a 50% chance.
08:09It ends up at plus seven.
08:10It's a little overcast today.
08:12It's definitely humid.
08:13It's definitely still hot.
08:14The golf course has been sticky this morning.
08:16Some guys have been doing some scoring on the back nine,
08:18but the front nine I'd be concerned with.
08:21Keith, very early on yesterday in the opening round when you joined us live,
08:26I asked you a question with 14 guys in red figures.
08:29How was Oakmont faring in the opening round?
08:32Considered the most difficult golf course maybe in the world at this current juncture.
08:37Well, round one scoring average, 74.64, the hardest opening round of the United States Open since 2018.
08:48So what did you make of Oakmont's resolve in the carnage we saw yesterday?
08:53What can we anticipate in this round two Friday?
08:56Ben, that was a great question yesterday.
08:58I mean, the AM wave alone, just a couple hours after we got done, they were five over par as far as their scoring average.
09:05The PM wave was a little bit less.
09:07It played about what I thought it was.
09:09Eleven guys finished under par yesterday.
09:11I think it'll be around that same number today.
09:13We've got some decent cloud cover, some humidity.
09:16Like I said, I think it's going to stay tacky for a little while today, but some of these hole locations are what's really spicy.
09:21If you could get through holes one, two, and three at even par, you're going to feel pretty good about yourself.
09:26I mean, yesterday, the second hole, one of the shortest par fours on the golf course, played third toughest.
09:31It's because of those pin positions and the severity of the greens.
09:34You really got to pay attention to what's going on right now.
09:37This mega group that went off the back with Scotty and Victor Hovland, which has been hot on the back nine,
09:42they're going to head into one, two, and three.
09:44Brooks is headed into one, two, and three right now.
09:46You're going to see some really good theater there.
09:49Whereas the guys like Rob and Jordan, who got beat up on the front nine this morning,
09:53they're circling to the back, and I think they'll do some scoring.
09:56At the end of the day, I think it's going to be right around the same number,
09:59and we're looking at these afternoon guys really fighting a cut sweat right around six or seven.
10:04That's going to be fun to watch, too.
10:06Ben and I talk about how fun the U.S. Open is where you can have a three or four shot lead just absolutely disappear after one hole here
10:13and continue to fight back.
10:14We're taking a look at Victor Hovland right now, minus four under on the day,
10:17as well as Sam Burns at a minus four under on the day.
10:20Some of these guys can get hot today, but the expectations for you, Keith, right?
10:24We have eight players right now under par.
10:26If I ask you this question by the end of today, is it going to be nine, ten, or eleven under par,
10:31or let's just say three, four, or five people under par?
10:34It's definitely going to be single digits, Donnie.
10:37I don't think five.
10:39I think that it's not the weather and the wind.
10:42There's no wind.
10:43The weather, again, with all the cloud cover and the idea that the rain is coming in for tonight and into tomorrow,
10:48I think the place won't be as fiery as it could be.
10:52So I think there'll be somewhere between like six and nine guys left under par by the end of 36 holes.
10:58I mean, hey, you know, you got situations like JT today.
11:01He's on the 12th hole, the par five.
11:02He's putting for birdie from 22 feet.
11:04He walked off with seven, double bogey, you know, four putts later, and three of them from inside four feet.
11:10I mean, it can happen quick around here, but I think one of the biggest stories coming out of today is,
11:15and this week so far, is Brooks Koepka.
11:18He's clad in the gold and black today in honor of, I guess, the Steelers, the Penguins, or the Pirates.
11:24You take your pick, but it's a strong move on his part and Nike, and he's making a strong move this week.
11:30I mean, he's been nowhere in major championships since he won in Oak Hill two years ago in 2023.
11:36I mean, he's had one top 20 since then, and it was the U.S. Open following that.
11:40His last two major championships are missed cuts.
11:42I mean, this guy was the terminator in major championships, especially tough setups like this.
11:46It's nice to see him back.
11:48People are fired up for it.
11:50Yeah, certainly so, a five-time major champion in Brooks Koepka elevating his game on this stage.
11:56But as Keith warned, when you start on the front, even if it's your final nine holes of Friday, it's difficult.
12:02Brooks did just bogey the first hole, his tenth of the day.
12:06He has fallen back to one under par.
12:08He was two under yesterday.
12:10Keith, of our five betting favorites entering this tournament at the United States Open,
12:15John Rahm was the only guy in red figures yesterday.
12:19He was the round two favorite entering it, plus $5.50, a dollar in front of Scottie.
12:24Rahm ever so slightly at eight to one live right now on the FanDuel Sportsbook is that betting favorite.
12:31But some well-known names still in the hunt.
12:33Victor Hovland, we have talked about, of course, Scottie Scheffler.
12:37He is one over right now.
12:39Brooks Koepka in the fold.
12:40How do you expect the big names to perform to finish out this Friday and enter the weekend at Oakmont?
12:46I love the position we're in with John Rahm.
12:48He was an early lean on the early line, you know, back on Wednesday.
12:52And he hit the ball fantastic yesterday.
12:54Number one off the tee.
12:55And we talked a ton about that, how you have to hit fairways.
12:58It's an absolute stripe show.
13:00And then he gained another two strokes on the field with his approach game.
13:03The ball striking is really, really good.
13:05And all that creativity I talked about around the greens, he's doing that as well.
13:09He's just come off the tougher nine.
13:11You watch.
13:12In the next two hours, he is going to bring that score back under par.
13:16He's going to be sitting under par.
13:17One of the few guys that will be there going into the weekend.
13:20And he won't have to worry about this afternoon.
13:22He'll be well rested for moving day on Saturday.
13:24I love our ROM position.
13:26And you know what?
13:27If you're not in on it now, it's time to get in.
13:29Just like we had J.J. Spahn yesterday.
13:31First round leader coming out of this show.
13:33You want to get on.
13:34I catch that ticket, Keith, on J.J. Spahn.
13:38And he did finish as the first round leader at four under.
13:41You said the bird in the hand.
13:43We made good on that final 40 seconds of this segment.
13:46Let's focus on J.J. Spahn.
13:48What does he do for an encore on this Friday in round two?
13:51Well, the one thing he has to maintain, Ben, and it's very difficult to do, is he gained four strokes on the field yesterday putting.
13:58And I just don't know how that's going to happen again.
14:00He made 90 feet of putts and he chipped in in order to come up with that 66 leading the way.
14:06You saw yesterday as it got late in the day, those last couple holes coming in were really, really difficult.
14:12I had a number of outrights out here.
14:13Look at Sam Burns.
14:14He was three under par.
14:15He finished on the back nine.
14:16Bogey, double, bogey, bogey.
14:18And he was plus two before you knew it.
14:20You know it.
14:21So do not count your chickens before they get into the house.
14:24No doubt about it, J.J. Spahn right now, 10 to one.
14:28Tees off later today, just short of 1 p.m. Eastern.
14:31Keith, have a great weekend at the U.S. Open.
14:34We appreciate all the coverage and hard work.
14:36More TBL next.
