00:00Live right here on this Thursday, it is our fourth and final major of this year in golf.
00:05It is the oldest major championship of them all, the Open Championship.
00:10Round number one firmly underway.
00:12The late tee times off right now at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland,
00:17including the Northern Irishman in Rory McIlroy.
00:21Joining us here to break down what he has seen so far in the opening 18 holes for everybody
00:26and what we will see the remainder of the morning and the afternoon.
00:30Here's stateside.
00:31Our guy, Keith Stewart, joins the early line for a second consecutive day.
00:34Keith, you were here yesterday for two segments to get a set for the 153rd Open Championship.
00:41You are here once again as round number one is now underway.
00:45Ben, Donnie, it's a pleasure to be with you.
00:47It's about midday for me.
00:49I've been up since, oh, maybe 4 a.m.
00:51Enjoying the coverage and things are playing out.
00:53Things are playing out much like we talked about yesterday.
00:56I'm excited about the way this tournament is starting.
01:00Yeah, Keith, you really should be because each and every time here on the early line,
01:04whether it's a major championship or any week on the PGA Tour, we end with the early leans on the early lines.
01:10The golfers you like, either outright top 10, top 20, to have a good week on these significant stages.
01:16Two names that you mentioned to us yesterday.
01:18John Rahm, who had the third best betting price, entering the Open.
01:22He's one under through 15.
01:24T10 at this moment, a good start for the Spaniard in the deeper shot.
01:29Matt Fitzpatrick, who is currently in the clubhouse and tied atop the leaderboard alongside two others at four under par.
01:37So, Keith, what have you seen so far out of two of your early leans at the Open Championship?
01:42Well, I love the way that both have started.
01:45Now, Matt Fitz, a little bit of luck on 16, the hole there, the very tough par three.
01:49He chipped in from next to the green.
01:51So, maybe he's only three under, maybe four under, but definitely a steady start.
01:55And what I expected coming out of Scotland.
01:57I mean, the guy's just been ball striking it.
01:59The putter popped a little bit today.
02:01I mean, he could have been even a little bit better, maybe a little bit worse.
02:04But those guys this morning have played through some tough conditions.
02:07Everybody was worried about the wave advantage.
02:09This afternoon, the rain has moved out.
02:12The wind is only blowing in that 12 to 15 mile an hour land.
02:15And the temperature is in the mid-60s.
02:17I mean, that's pretty much summertime in July there in Northern Ireland.
02:21So, Rory and Victor and the guys this afternoon, they're going to have a chance to score a little bit.
02:26And we've seen some scoring.
02:27Now, as far as Rahm goes, I love the start.
02:30He's at 12 of 15 greens in regulation.
02:32And if you look at the guys that are in that top, like, six, the top nine, ten names on the leaderboard,
02:37those guys are the guys that are leading in strokes gained approach.
02:40Not necessarily putting, not around the green, and not off the tee.
02:44And we talked about this yesterday.
02:46You have got to be an iron killer this week.
02:49These are small greens in the wind, and those guys are already leading.
02:52So, you know what?
02:53I love our leans because those are the types of guys we picked.
02:57Let's take a look at this.
02:58From the American standpoint, you say to yourself, you know what?
03:00Scotty Scheffler is supposed to be up there in the league.
03:02Well, he just burned it a hole to get into the top five as a tie with two under.
03:06But how about the next two Americans?
03:07Ricky Fowler and Phil Mickelson at this point.
03:11Sometimes the open championship, Keith, actually opens the door for, like, you know what?
03:15I didn't expect some of these guys to do this, but it seems like this corner more than any other
03:19will let you in the door and compete.
03:21Ricky Fowler and Phil Mickelson technically in the top ten.
03:25Donnie, I'll call you.
03:26I'll throw you a couple of Ryder Cup favorites from the other side.
03:29How about Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia being up there?
03:32Look at it.
03:32Right?
03:33Those four guys.
03:34I mean, again, we get these guys that are a little later in their career, but why?
03:38They're seasoned veterans.
03:39You have to be creative.
03:41You have to have seen these types of shots before.
03:43You can't be rolling up like Ben Griffin and think, hey, you know, I'm just going to figure
03:46this thing out today.
03:47Or Taylor Penderth in his first open championship.
03:50Look at the leaderboard last year.
03:51We had a ton of crafty veterans between Billy Horschel and Justin Rose and Shane Lowry,
03:56and it's going to happen again.
03:57Now, those guys and their nerves, they may fall away to Ben's point, you know, come Sunday.
04:03But for right now, you're going to see those names pop.
04:05And again, what do those guys do really well?
04:08Ricky Fowler, Sergio Garcia, and Lee Westwood made careers out of hitting greens and regulation.
04:13You've got to run with these guys right now because hitting these greens over the course
04:17of the next couple of days is going to be the most difficult challenge.
04:21Look at those pins today.
04:22Lee Westwood had to qualify for the Open.
04:26The Englishman, two under par in his opening round.
04:30Has never won a major, Keith.
04:32Right now, he is top five, as is Scotty Scheffler, our pre-tournament favorite at plus 450.
04:38Anytime Scheffler is even decent, that price drops throughout a round that he is on the course.
04:44He is now a plus 300 live favorite to win the Claret Jug.
04:48Of course, all eyes, Keith, on the man from Northern Ireland who holds the course record
04:53at Royal Portrush with a 61 that he shot as a teenager.
04:57Rory McIlroy on the course right now in his opening hole.
05:01A drive into the thick stuff, but a pretty good second shot approach.
05:05Hacking it out.
05:06He is greenside as we speak.
05:09The odds profile on Rory entering this week at Royal Portrush.
05:13Top five, plus 175.
05:15Top 10, minus 110.
05:17And as he started today, seven to one, the second best price pre-tournament.
05:23You told us yesterday for Rory not to make an eight on his first hole of the championship
05:27would be success.
05:29He seems to be in a good spot, Keith, right now for improvement.
05:33Open over open.
05:35What's your prognosis on McIlroy the remainder of this week near his hometown?
05:40I feel like of the big three, he's the biggest threat.
05:42He is really seeming to be like, he's accepting, he's embracing all of the coronation that is
05:48happening from these people.
05:49They're saying right now, this will be the largest attended sporting event ever in Northern
05:54Ireland.
05:54And who do you think that they're coming out to see?
05:56They're coming out to see Rory, not Shane Lowry, not Patty Harrington.
05:59They're coming out to see Rory.
06:01And the fact of the matter is, is that with a second run at this, I mean, I look at that
06:05minus 110 for a top 10 right now.
06:08The minute I hang up from you guys, I'm going to hit that as hard as I can.
06:11I mean, this guy is going to be a factor.
06:14He got through the nerves of the first tee shot and you're going to see him and his local
06:17knowledge is just going to start to take over as the golf course or as the golf tournament
06:22evolves.
06:23I love the position he's in and I love the mindset he's in.
06:26Forget Scotty and all this.
06:27I don't know what I'm doing out here.
06:29Rory knows what he's doing.
06:30He's doing it for his country.
06:3270 and a half.
06:33The round one score, the over under for Rory McIlroy should be noted par 71 at Portrush.
06:40So to shoot a 70 and go under, which I bet with some plus money would be a one under par
06:45opening 18 for Rory McIlroy.
06:48What a year it's been, right?
06:50Captured the career grand slam at the Masters, his first green jacket, his first major win
06:55in 11 years.
06:56Could he take two of the four this season?
06:58Keith, we appreciate the time as always this week, man.
07:02Enjoy the rest of the Open Championship and a great afternoon nap coming your way on this
07:06Thursday.
07:07Set your alarms.
07:08We're doing it again tomorrow.
07:09and I'm done.
07:10See you now.
07:11I'm done.
07:16See you now.
07:17See you soon.
07:17I'm done.
07:18See you soon.
07:19I know it were one.
07:20I know.
07:21See you soon.
07:22I know that.
07:24I know.
07:25I don't know.
07:26I love about it.
07:28I know it's been a moment to me in an interview.
07:28I know.
07:29I know I am going to beAcadar that I don't know.
07:31I know what I know.
07:31It's been a gift and I love you.
07:33I know it's been aاح.
07:34I'm done a happy book.
