00:00:00Enjoy any kind of happiness. Knowledge is the key to success.
00:00:09Children go to school and...
00:00:11All right, everybody. So, welcome back.
00:00:13Just some international news for you here.
00:00:16So, Air India confirms that a flight from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, was involved in an accident after takeoff.
00:00:23The flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew members.
00:00:28So, again, Air India confirms that a flight from Ahmedabad to London, Gatwick, was involved in an accident after takeoff.
00:00:35The flight was carrying 242 passengers and crew members.
00:00:39And what we will try to do is get a further update of that story for you in our program this morning.
00:00:46All right. So, we are returning home now and we are speaking about the issue of school violence again.
00:00:52Of course, maybe about a week ago, the Prime Minister laid down the law when it came to school violence,
00:01:00speaking about students involved in delinquent behavior and saying that the government intended to bring new policies
00:01:10to deal with delinquent students, in some cases expelling them,
00:01:16in some cases asking the police to take action against members of the delinquent group
00:01:22and so that they must face the full brunt of the law.
00:01:26So, since then, there has been this debate concerning school violence and what is being considered by the government.
00:01:31All right. So, we do have with us in studio this morning,
00:01:33President of the National Parent Teachers Association, Mr. Walter Stewart.
00:01:37But, Mr. Stewart, good to have you here this morning.
00:01:39Good morning and good to be here. Good morning to your viewership on this wet Thursday morning.
00:01:43Yeah. And thank you very much for coming down to the studio and breathing the rain, sir.
00:01:47A lot of parts of the country underwater right now.
00:01:50So, we're thankful that you are here this morning.
00:01:52So, let's look at this issue of school violence again.
00:01:55It's not the first time that we have spoken about this.
00:01:59It has raised its ugly head again.
00:02:02Yesterday, there was a report in the newspaper.
00:02:06We would have seen it the night before in the news where it was being reported.
00:02:10Actually, that's the video there where we saw several people, I don't know if to call them students,
00:02:16but beating a student outside of a school.
00:02:20So, in spite of the threats, really, that the government is contemplating
00:02:26to deal with the delinquency among the youth, it still continues.
00:02:34Yeah. Certainly, Marlon. Again, good morning.
00:02:37This issue of school violence is nothing new.
00:02:40Ever since I was at school, probably when you were at school as well, there was school violence.
00:02:44But I want to coin a phrase which says, tough times deserve tough measures.
00:02:51And when you look at what is presently taking place in and out of our schools, among our students,
00:02:56there is need to be able to take a hard line stance when it comes to school violence and school indiscipline.
00:03:02So, it cannot be business as usual. It cannot be same old, same old.
00:03:06We have to make sure that we now let students understand that there are consequences for their actions.
00:03:13And when, of course, they do get infractions similar to what we have seen over the past, well, recently and last week,
00:03:19I mean, there has to be some firm, decisive and swift action taken in order to mitigate
00:03:26and even to reduce the amount of criminal, well, criminal activities suddenly and school violence taking place in our schools.
00:03:35Yeah. But you know what has been the dilemma in the past?
00:03:38And I think that that's where the education ministry, I think that they felt like they were between a rock and a hard place
00:03:48because I think that the position taken by persons at the education ministry, even at the police level,
00:03:57that they did not want to, they were a bit hesitant to take action against students
00:04:06because there was the fear that if we do take action, and I'm not saying action wasn't taken,
00:04:13I'm just saying that for students to feel the full brunt of the law,
00:04:18because I think that the concern was, well, here's what, we do not want to treat these students,
00:04:23these children as criminals.
00:04:25And I think that was the concern.
00:04:27And probably that is why our students continue to behave with this level of aggression
00:04:31because they understand that they can't do me anything, literally.
00:04:37I have coined the acronym, SEA, suspend, expel, and arrest,
00:04:43because that is what our students need in order to jolt them into the reality
00:04:48that school violence, school indiscipline cannot be business as usual.
00:04:53It cannot continue ad nauseum without us, parents, teachers, law enforcement,
00:05:00taking firm actions against them in order to bring them back from the brink.
00:05:03Yeah.
00:05:05You, earlier this week we would have spoken to a psychologist,
00:05:12and I think that the concern that she would have expressed, well, here's what.
00:05:17that if punitive action is taken against the student,
00:05:25that there's the risk of more bad than good to the student.
00:05:36And I think that the concern was how is this going to impact them mentally, physically,
00:05:44and what impact it is going to have on their life as a whole.
00:05:48And that's a very good concern.
00:05:51We have to now merge the punitive action with restorative action as well.
00:05:58So you can't leave them up to the wolves as it were,
00:06:01imprison them or my life as the case might be,
00:06:04because we have to now understand, Marlon,
00:06:05that they are root causes to the behavior of our students.
00:06:09They don't wake up on a Thursday morning and begin to lash out, certainly.
00:06:14So that we have to understand what is causing this.
00:06:17What trauma have you experienced?
00:06:18Is there abuse in your family?
00:06:20Is there abuse in your home?
00:06:21What is your community like?
00:06:22That's why, and I say it again for the umpteenth time,
00:06:25there needs to be more proactive mechanisms and measures put in place
00:06:30rather than us reacting as we are now
00:06:32after the horse has bolted out of this table.
00:06:36So that if you employ these preventative measures from the first year,
00:06:41as soon as the child enters the school,
00:06:4319,000 of them probably are coming in in September 2025.
00:06:46Let us engage our school social workers,
00:06:49our psychologists, our psychiatrists,
00:06:51our traumatologists even,
00:06:53and understand what the child is facing in the home
00:06:56and continuously follow that child from first year up until end of primary school,
00:07:00into secondary school.
00:07:02Listen, we spend thousands, billions of dollars in several ministries,
00:07:06Ministry of the People and Social Development,
00:07:08Ministry of National, well, now Homeland Security and Defense.
00:07:11So much money we spend on, well, restoring the lives of our children.
00:07:16If we invest these monies in the early stages,
00:07:19certainly, certainly, we are going to assist in mitigating
00:07:22and helping not only the students,
00:07:24but certainly their parents as well in the long run.
00:07:26Yeah.
00:07:27You know, there has been an argument years ago.
00:07:34The argument was that you do have students that when you expel them,
00:07:40they see this as a badge of honor,
00:07:45that it is something that they should feel proud about.
00:07:50How do you touch that individual in order to get that individual
00:07:58to understand that here's what, what you are doing is wrong,
00:08:02and this may be an attempt to change your life.
00:08:05How do you touch that individual?
00:08:07Well, again, that goes for the intervention
00:08:10of the Student Support Service Division as well,
00:08:14and their intervention is allowing the child
00:08:15or letting the child understand that whilst we are punishing you,
00:08:19so it's kind of tough love, as you will do in your home, for example.
00:08:22Whilst we are punishing you,
00:08:23we really want to be able to take you to that place
00:08:26where you understand what you have done is wrong,
00:08:28but there is still hope.
00:08:29It's not the end of the road for you.
00:08:31There is still hope, and you can be restored
00:08:33and placed in society at some other level.
00:08:37Yeah.
00:08:37You feel that the position that the government has taken,
00:08:41and I'm sure that these procedures,
00:08:45these recommendations are going to be piped
00:08:48through the education ministry.
00:08:50You think that because of what this new position is,
00:08:55it has somehow gotten these children out of their slumber
00:09:00and understand that there are going to be repercussions to their actions?
00:09:05Is it a wake-up call?
00:09:07I know.
00:09:07The proof of the pudding really is in the eating.
00:09:09And whilst we are good on making policy,
00:09:13the issue is always, in my humble view, enforcement of the policy.
00:09:18And if students understand that there are circumstances and consequences
00:09:21for their infractions, for their actions,
00:09:23and we act upon those in a decisive, swift, and firm manner,
00:09:28it is going to jewel them into reality, certainly,
00:09:31because who wants to be arrested?
00:09:33Who wants to be expelled?
00:09:34I mean, even though, as you said, it's a badge of honor.
00:09:37But certainly, it is going to be a wake-up call to would-be likelihood
00:09:41of getting involved in school violence.
00:09:44Let me temper my anger.
00:09:46Let me temper my aggression somewhat.
00:09:48It is not going to help me in the long run.
00:09:51You know, I think that
00:09:53when the Prime Minister would have made her statements,
00:09:59I think that those statements would have come as a surprise to many,
00:10:04because for so long, I think that there has been
00:10:08a sort of slap-on-the-wrist approach
00:10:11as it relates to the children.
00:10:14But I also think that there was a bit of surprise
00:10:18when we saw the position of your organization,
00:10:22when we saw the position of tutor.
00:10:26Is that to say that you believe that, here's what,
00:10:30everything would have been done in the past
00:10:34to reform these children?
00:10:37They got no results, really.
00:10:40So maybe the only thing now is to use the big-stick approach?
00:10:45Well, two issues there.
00:10:46When we saw what was taking place
00:10:48among our school students early February of this year,
00:10:52we wrote to the CEO at the Ministry of Education
00:10:54because we realized that if we continue with this situation unabated,
00:10:58it might be disastrous in the long run, even fatal.
00:11:01We wrote to the CEO.
00:11:03Of course, there has not been that meeting as yet.
00:11:06So that when we saw the, and I'm using your words,
00:11:08the big-stick approach by the Prime Minister
00:11:11and, of course, the government by extension,
00:11:14whilst it might appear as if it was knee-jerk
00:11:16because there was the Southeast Port of Spain school incident
00:11:18just the same week,
00:11:20whilst it might be somewhat of a knee-jerk reaction,
00:11:23but it was necessary.
00:11:24And again, let me emphasize,
00:11:26whilst it is necessary,
00:11:27it should not only be talk,
00:11:29but put some action behind that talk
00:11:31and enforce those policies.
00:11:33Yeah.
00:11:34How do you see these new policies working
00:11:39as you look at the future
00:11:42as it relates to education
00:11:46and a change in the behavior of students?
00:11:50How do you see it working?
00:11:52Well, let me not say that it is a new policy, really,
00:11:55because we are guided by the discipline matrix,
00:11:57national discipline matrix,
00:11:59which was revised in September 2022,
00:12:01just after the pandemic.
00:12:03But, of course, again, whilst this is on paper,
00:12:07the action or lack of action
00:12:10is what is of deep concern to us
00:12:13because whilst you have the discipline matrix,
00:12:15there has to be act behind the policy document.
00:12:20So I think if the government,
00:12:21through the Ministry of Education,
00:12:22is willing to enforce the policy,
00:12:25revised policy, let me use that terminology,
00:12:28yesterday, and, of course,
00:12:29bring all the stakeholders together
00:12:31in order to come up with the best fit at this time,
00:12:34and, of course, object to tweaking from time to time,
00:12:37we should see some mitigation,
00:12:39some reduction in the level of crime,
00:12:42the aggression,
00:12:43and the rapidity at which,
00:12:44the frequency at which
00:12:46these school violences take place.
00:12:48Let's talk about the role of the parent.
00:12:50Good question.
00:12:51Now, we have asked as well
00:12:55for a parenting proposal
00:12:57because you are correct
00:13:00in intimidating that,
00:13:02insinuating, sorry,
00:13:04that parents play a great role.
00:13:06And certainly,
00:13:06we need to counsel our parents,
00:13:10triplet our parents,
00:13:11in order that they understand
00:13:12the need and the importance
00:13:13for parenting your child
00:13:15because, ultimately,
00:13:16you have a critical role to play
00:13:18with regards to school violence
00:13:19in your children.
00:13:20And whilst we admit
00:13:21that parents are trying hard,
00:13:23some of them are trying really hard,
00:13:24going over and beyond
00:13:25the call of duty,
00:13:26flipping over some of the times
00:13:27in order to assist
00:13:28and help their students,
00:13:30but there needs to be
00:13:31constant parenting, tutoring,
00:13:34helping our children
00:13:35in our communities,
00:13:36in our churches,
00:13:37in our mandeves,
00:13:37our mosques,
00:13:38wherever possible,
00:13:39parents congregate and gather.
00:13:41Let us organize some programs
00:13:43in order to be able to help them.
00:13:45We, ourselves,
00:13:45the National Council
00:13:46of Parenting and Teacher Association,
00:13:48we have a 21-page document
00:13:49called the Parenting Proposal,
00:13:51which we want to be able
00:13:52to establish in our communities
00:13:53to be able to assist
00:13:55and help our parents
00:13:56be a better parent
00:13:57or how to even be a parent.
00:14:00Over the months,
00:14:02we have had a number of discussions
00:14:04concerning education
00:14:05in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:14:06We have spoken about
00:14:07the infrastructure of schools.
00:14:09We have spoken about security,
00:14:11the school violence.
00:14:12Have you, your organization,
00:14:14have you met
00:14:15with the new ministers yet?
00:14:16That's a very good question.
00:14:18And we see the minister,
00:14:19and of course, again,
00:14:20congratulations to him
00:14:21and his appointment.
00:14:23We see him meeting
00:14:23with all stakeholders,
00:14:25and we wonder
00:14:26when he's going to meet
00:14:28with the National Council
00:14:29of Parenting and Teacher Association.
00:14:31I want to posit
00:14:32that the parents
00:14:33are, in my humble view,
00:14:37the main stakeholder
00:14:38in the business of education.
00:14:40If there are no students,
00:14:43children that we produce,
00:14:45there will be no need
00:14:45for teachers, educators,
00:14:48administration, etc.
00:14:50So we wait anxiously
00:14:51with bated breath
00:14:52for the time
00:14:53the minister would invite us
00:14:54to a meet
00:14:54because we have
00:14:55a long list of issues
00:14:56to be able to discuss with him,
00:14:58and some of those
00:14:59you mentioned prior as well.
00:15:02Yeah, so is it those issues
00:15:06that I would have mentioned
00:15:07as some of the top priority issues
00:15:11that you would want
00:15:11the minister to deal with?
00:15:14Especially around this time
00:15:16when we are going
00:15:16into the July-August vacation,
00:15:18you know the perennial problem,
00:15:19Marlon,
00:15:20with the school infrastructure.
00:15:21And I'm happy to hear
00:15:23that, of course,
00:15:23about 200-plus schools
00:15:24are on the radar,
00:15:25are on the list
00:15:26for repairs and maintenance,
00:15:28so that we want to be able
00:15:29to walk through
00:15:30with the minister,
00:15:31give us a list
00:15:31of these schools
00:15:32and let us concur
00:15:34that we want to have a list
00:15:35and let us come up
00:15:36with the best fit
00:15:37to ensure that
00:15:38come September
00:15:38we don't have the regular
00:15:40quarrels, as it were,
00:15:43between the NPTA
00:15:44and the ministry tutor,
00:15:47you know,
00:15:47but the schools
00:15:48are up and running
00:15:48and fit for purpose
00:15:50for our students
00:15:50academic year 25-26.
00:15:53Yeah, so I do have to call
00:15:55at the beginning
00:15:56of the new school.
00:15:56Well, I would hope not.
00:15:57I would hope not.
00:15:59When a new school term begins,
00:16:01you are going to be
00:16:01home sleeping, right?
00:16:03That's right, that's right.
00:16:04Mr. Stewart,
00:16:05anything else you'd like
00:16:06to add before you
00:16:07leave us this morning?
00:16:08Well, again,
00:16:08just to make the appeal
00:16:09to the Honourable Minister,
00:16:10Dr. Michael Dowlath,
00:16:13we are ready
00:16:14and willing to meet with you,
00:16:15you know,
00:16:16and we know that
00:16:18when we meet,
00:16:19we want to ensure
00:16:20that the meeting
00:16:21is a cordial one,
00:16:22meaningful as well
00:16:23and purposeful,
00:16:24and not only this
00:16:25one-off meeting,
00:16:26but, of course,
00:16:27we need to meet frequently.
00:16:29We need to be able
00:16:29to understand
00:16:30what you are doing
00:16:31at the ministry
00:16:32as well as what
00:16:33our concerns
00:16:33and interests are.
00:16:36Again,
00:16:36our motto at the NPTA
00:16:38is Home and School United
00:16:40for the Good of the Child.
00:16:42Shared interest,
00:16:43I'm sure,
00:16:44mutual interest
00:16:45with the ministry
00:16:46and, of course,
00:16:47National Council
00:16:47of Parent Teacher Association.
00:16:49Yeah, I just have
00:16:49about one minute again.
00:16:51But how are we looking
00:16:53as it relates
00:16:53to the education sector?
00:16:55Let's say,
00:16:57when you compare
00:16:57this time of the year
00:16:59to what would have transpired
00:17:00last year,
00:17:01is there any improvement?
00:17:03Does the same,
00:17:05do the same problems
00:17:07still exist?
00:17:09Well,
00:17:10let me say,
00:17:11yes, certainly,
00:17:12and, of course,
00:17:12it's early days yet
00:17:13for this new administration,
00:17:14and, of course,
00:17:15let me make it abundantly clear
00:17:16that the National Council
00:17:17of PTA is apolitical.
00:17:19So we work with
00:17:20whoever is in office
00:17:21again in the interest
00:17:22and concerns
00:17:23and well-being
00:17:23of the child.
00:17:24That's our ultimate goal.
00:17:25So that, yes,
00:17:26the problems
00:17:27and challenges
00:17:28are similar.
00:17:30And, of course,
00:17:30we are hoping that,
00:17:31especially with the infrastructure,
00:17:33how we deal with it
00:17:34and rule it out
00:17:35could make a difference
00:17:36with the former administration
00:17:38and the current administration.
00:17:40Again,
00:17:40not taking any political sides,
00:17:42but being able
00:17:43to work cohesively
00:17:44because that is really
00:17:45one of our biggest challenges.
00:17:46We have to all
00:17:47put our shoulders
00:17:48to the wheel
00:17:49as stakeholders
00:17:49to ensure
00:17:50that the ultimate,
00:17:51the product,
00:17:52the child,
00:17:52is at the center
00:17:53of interest.
00:17:54And whilst I'm saying that,
00:17:56three of the imperatives
00:17:57of the United National Congress
00:17:58according to their manifesto,
00:18:00one,
00:18:00focus on the child,
00:18:01two,
00:18:02focus on the parent,
00:18:04the importance of parenting
00:18:05as we had previously discussed,
00:18:07and three,
00:18:07focus on the process
00:18:09of education.
00:18:09And we are holding them
00:18:11tenaciously
00:18:11to those three imperatives
00:18:13in order to ensure
00:18:14that we get the best
00:18:16for our children,
00:18:17our nation's children.
00:18:18Yeah.
00:18:19Mr. Stewart,

00:26:17Known as the next
00:26:18generation of dance
00:26:19Ailey 2 is set
00:26:20to perform
00:26:21its acclaimed
00:26:21repertoire
00:26:22including Alvin Ailey's
00:26:24timeless masterpiece
00:26:24Revelations
00:26:25at Queen's Hall
00:26:26on August 27th.
00:26:28Well we do have
00:26:29in studio this morning
00:26:30CEO
00:26:31Artistic Director
00:26:32of Plie for the Arts
00:26:34Marissa Benin.
00:26:35Marissa thank you
00:26:36very much for coming
00:26:36this morning.
00:26:37Thanks for having me.
00:26:38Yeah and let me tell you
00:26:39Marissa only came
00:26:40into the country
00:26:41last night
00:26:41so I was a bit concerned
00:26:43I said well
00:26:44Marissa has to deal
00:26:45with this jet lag
00:26:46but Marissa is in
00:26:48fine spirits
00:26:48this morning
00:26:49you know.
00:26:50Marissa thank you
00:26:51very much for coming
00:26:51this morning.
00:26:52Thank you for having me.
00:26:53So here's what
00:26:53for people
00:26:55because I'm sure
00:26:57that there are going
00:26:58to be people
00:26:58who are familiar
00:27:00with Alvin Ailey
00:27:02and dance
00:27:03and so on
00:27:04but there may be
00:27:05people who
00:27:05are not too familiar
00:27:07about it.
00:27:08So when we speak
00:27:08about this production
00:27:09what's in store
00:27:11for persons
00:27:13who may want to come?
00:27:15So for this production
00:27:16the gala
00:27:18is called
00:27:18Amalgamation
00:27:19which features
00:27:20which is the
00:27:23premier second company
00:27:24of Alvin Ailey
00:27:25which is one of
00:27:27the most powerful
00:27:27dance companies
00:27:28in the world
00:27:29and it is a privilege
00:27:31actually to hold
00:27:32it in Trinidad
00:27:33in the Caribbean
00:27:34actually
00:27:35because they're
00:27:35going to Jamaica
00:27:36right after
00:27:37but to have
00:27:38a piece like
00:27:39Revelations again
00:27:40essentially I think
00:27:42they came to Trinidad
00:27:44before
00:27:44and this is the second
00:27:46time in Trinidad
00:27:46actually
00:27:47and they actually
00:27:48love it.
00:27:49There is something
00:27:50for everyone
00:27:50on the stage
00:27:52it doesn't matter
00:27:52if you are a dance
00:27:54connoisseur
00:27:54and you know
00:27:55about dances
00:27:56you may not know
00:27:56anything about dancing
00:27:58but there literally
00:27:59is a dance
00:28:00for everyone
00:28:01for the layman
00:28:02for the person
00:28:02who is really
00:28:04versed on creative
00:28:05works around the world
00:28:07versus someone
00:28:07who has never seen
00:28:08a production before
00:28:09there is something
00:28:10for you to enjoy
00:28:11for sure
00:28:11and it will include
00:28:13also Jamaican dancers
00:28:14there is a mix
00:28:15of Caribbean dancers
00:28:16that will do
00:28:17the critically acclaimed
00:28:19The Hunt
00:28:19by Robert Battle
00:28:21who is a former
00:28:22artist and director
00:28:23of the Ailey company
00:28:24and they will also
00:28:25do The Calling
00:28:26by acclaimed again
00:28:28Jessica Lange
00:28:29so it is a really
00:28:30full on gala production
00:28:33and I'm very sure
00:28:35that the people
00:28:36of Trinidad and Tobago
00:28:37will really enjoy
00:28:38the show.
00:28:39Revelations
00:28:40right
00:28:40but is there
00:28:41again
00:28:42I'm asking for people
00:28:44who are not
00:28:44too awkward
00:28:45with this
00:28:47so is there
00:28:48a particular theme
00:28:50because
00:28:50as you're saying
00:28:51I'm sure
00:28:52there are
00:28:53if I can put it
00:28:55this way
00:28:55different genres
00:28:56of dance
00:28:57in this production
00:28:58so how do you
00:29:01how do you
00:29:02put them together
00:29:04in this tapestry
00:29:07well
00:29:08I'm often
00:29:11described as someone
00:29:13who always find hits
00:29:15right
00:29:15I
00:29:16I don't like
00:29:17you know
00:29:18an audience
00:29:18to come to a show
00:29:19and I'm going to wonder
00:29:20if they like it
00:29:21I see a piece
00:29:23and if it's a hit
00:29:24or a miss
00:29:25and if it's a hit
00:29:27I'll take it
00:29:27if it's not
00:29:28so I take a lot of
00:29:30you know
00:29:30full responsibility
00:29:31for the pieces
00:29:33for creating the pieces
00:29:34and I do a lot of research
00:29:36I do a lot of research
00:29:38on the reviews
00:29:39about the pieces
00:29:39and if you
00:29:41just google
00:29:42The Hunt
00:29:43or Revelations
00:29:44you will see that
00:29:45these are masterpieces
00:29:46that are appreciated
00:29:48by audiences
00:29:48around the world
00:29:49and I know
00:29:51that the people
00:29:51of Trinidad
00:29:52you know
00:29:52they have
00:29:53you know
00:29:54very high taste
00:29:55in the creative industries
00:29:56I remember my
00:29:57time here
00:29:58at Carrifesta
00:29:59so I am sure
00:30:00that they will be pleased
00:30:02so it's basically
00:30:03I do the research
00:30:04and I see
00:30:05you know
00:30:05what is
00:30:06you know
00:30:07what are people saying
00:30:08about these pieces
00:30:09as in the regular folks
00:30:10as in critics
00:30:11and so many people
00:30:13can't be
00:30:14wrong
00:30:15so that is the basis
00:30:17on which I select pieces
00:30:18it has to be a hit
00:30:19otherwise it's not going to be
00:30:21on an amalgamation stage
00:30:22but do you have
00:30:24the opportunity
00:30:26as artistic director
00:30:29to tweak pieces
00:30:31a little bit
00:30:32so that the audience
00:30:34if it's a Caribbean audience
00:30:36so that you make it
00:30:38a little more palatable
00:30:40or the piece
00:30:41has to remain pure
00:30:42the piece has to remain pure
00:30:44that is why
00:30:45you have to be careful
00:30:45in selecting them
00:30:46you know
00:30:47you know what's going to work
00:30:49so I wouldn't bring Giselle
00:30:50to the Caribbean
00:30:51but I know
00:30:53Revelations will work
00:30:54you know
00:30:55because it is
00:30:56modern contemporary
00:30:57and it's not pure ballet
00:30:59and we have an appreciation
00:31:02for ballet too
00:31:02but you know
00:31:03there's so much
00:31:05and no more
00:31:05that we want to
00:31:06kind of consume
00:31:07in one sitting
00:31:08so that is why
00:31:09I choose
00:31:10so the challenge
00:31:12is choosing the piece
00:31:13that will work
00:31:14and not trying to
00:31:16find a piece
00:31:17and trying to make it work
00:31:18it has to be
00:31:19it has to work
00:31:20in its authentic self
00:31:22right
00:31:22it has to be organic
00:31:24an organic piece
00:31:25so you don't have to
00:31:27twiddle with it
00:31:28too much
00:31:29so even the music
00:31:30selection of the pieces
00:31:31you know
00:31:32those things are always
00:31:33a concern
00:31:33the music must work
00:31:34the choreography can work
00:31:36so the thing is
00:31:37sometimes you'll go
00:31:37and you see a show
00:31:38and you like the dance
00:31:39but the music is annoying
00:31:40you know
00:31:41and I try not to do
00:31:43subjective entertainment
00:31:45objectively anyone
00:31:46that looks on the piece
00:31:47should say
00:31:48oh this is really good
00:31:49you know
00:31:50I'm not trying
00:31:50to have an audience
00:31:51come and do brain surgery
00:31:52in the theater
00:31:54you must look at it
00:31:55and it must be easy
00:31:56on the eyes
00:31:57and it's easy
00:31:58to enjoy
00:31:59yeah
00:31:59you know
00:32:00so we're not doing
00:32:00rocket science
00:32:01yeah
00:32:02I like that
00:32:02so it's
00:32:04would you say
00:32:05that this is for everyone
00:32:06everyone can come
00:32:07and enjoy
00:32:08the entire family
00:32:09yeah
00:32:09and I
00:32:10you know
00:32:11that is very important
00:32:12it's a very important
00:32:13mantra for Plie
00:32:14we do not want to
00:32:16you know
00:32:16have audiences
00:32:17oh you know
00:32:18they're too young
00:32:20you know
00:32:20we do a family show
00:32:23we want everyone
00:32:24from the grandma
00:32:25to the granddaughter
00:32:26to be able to watch
00:32:28the show
00:32:28and enjoy it
00:32:30and not be offended
00:32:31by anything
00:32:32or not
00:32:32you know
00:32:33it's too scientific
00:32:34for the
00:32:35you know
00:32:35it is a show
00:32:36for everyone
00:32:37now
00:32:38this sort of dance
00:32:40and
00:32:41the Alvin Ailey
00:32:43company
00:32:44and also
00:32:45Alvin Ailey
00:32:46too
00:32:47but this is not
00:32:48new
00:32:49to
00:32:50the diaspora
00:32:52us
00:32:53in the Caribbean
00:32:54it is not
00:32:55anything new
00:32:56you think
00:32:57because I'm sure
00:32:58that you have been
00:32:58involved in dance
00:33:00for a while now
00:33:01so is it
00:33:03that you feel
00:33:04that the
00:33:05Caribbean audience
00:33:06today
00:33:07the Caribbean audience
00:33:08today
00:33:09they're still
00:33:10very much
00:33:11interested
00:33:12in ballet
00:33:13and classical dance
00:33:15and so on
00:33:16yes
00:33:16I think so
00:33:18and
00:33:18if you
00:33:20do any quick research
00:33:21you'll realize
00:33:22that there are a lot
00:33:22of Caribbean dancers
00:33:23from Trinidad
00:33:25and Jamaica
00:33:26and other parts
00:33:27of the region
00:33:27who have
00:33:28made it into
00:33:29international companies
00:33:31you know
00:33:31made it into Ailey
00:33:32too
00:33:32made it to Ailey
00:33:33Complexions
00:33:35Contemporary Ballet
00:33:36and you see
00:33:38that there is
00:33:38an interest
00:33:39you know
00:33:40one thing I've always
00:33:41known about the region
00:33:42is that we're not
00:33:43short on talent
00:33:44we may be short
00:33:46on exposure
00:33:47and that opening
00:33:48that window
00:33:49to the next level
00:33:49and that is all
00:33:51we need in the Caribbean
00:33:52opportunities
00:33:53we are rich
00:33:55with talent
00:33:56and that is
00:33:58so that is why
00:33:59part of
00:34:00what we do
00:34:01for PLIE
00:34:01is that we provide
00:34:02scholarships
00:34:03because you know
00:34:04it's one thing
00:34:05to do a show
00:34:06but you must provide
00:34:07an opportunity
00:34:07for a career path
00:34:09to the next level
00:34:09because there must be
00:34:11a mission behind
00:34:12everything that we do
00:34:13so every single
00:34:15organization
00:34:16that I've worked
00:34:17with since 2016
00:34:18apart from them
00:34:20coming to the region
00:34:21to dance
00:34:21you must give back
00:34:22something
00:34:22whether it's a scholarship
00:34:24whether it's a master class
00:34:26whether it's a dance talk
00:34:28a seminar
00:34:28to say
00:34:29okay
00:34:30I've gotten
00:34:30into this company
00:34:32what did I have to do
00:34:33to get to it
00:34:34what you know
00:34:34so and they share
00:34:35those things
00:34:36so you teach a class
00:34:37and you share
00:34:37you share your experience
00:34:39and you share
00:34:40what it is that is required
00:34:41to get you to the next level
00:34:42so it's not only about
00:34:44a production
00:34:45it's also
00:34:46you have to
00:34:47come and give back
00:34:48as I said
00:34:49all we want
00:34:50in the region
00:34:51is opportunities
00:34:52we have the talent
00:34:53we just want
00:34:54that somebody
00:34:55to open that door
00:34:56to open a window
00:34:57and then once
00:34:58you get in the door
00:34:59you have to do
00:34:59what you have to do
00:35:00yeah
00:35:01let's talk a little bit
00:35:02about because I know
00:35:03that there's a partnership
00:35:04with Plie for the Arts
00:35:06and the National Dance Association
00:35:07of Trinidad and Tobago
00:35:09right
00:35:09the University of the West Indies
00:35:12will be presenting
00:35:13will be the presenting partner
00:35:15for ALE2 Master Class
00:35:16Workshops and Dance Talks
00:35:18also on Monday
00:35:19the 25th of August
00:35:21at the University of St. Augustine
00:35:22yes
00:35:22so I'm very
00:35:24thankful to
00:35:26to Alette
00:35:27the president
00:35:28of the NDA
00:35:29who I met
00:35:31through a very good
00:35:32friend of mine
00:35:32Arlene
00:35:33who I met
00:35:33when I came here
00:35:34for Carifesta
00:35:36and they have been
00:35:37the driving force
00:35:38on the ground
00:35:39in Trinidad
00:35:40and so
00:35:42they're also having
00:35:43a championship
00:35:44today
00:35:45and
00:35:46yes
00:35:47right
00:35:48so
00:35:48they have come on board
00:35:50to help with the promotion
00:35:51and to get the word
00:35:52out there
00:35:52I'm not from Trinidad
00:35:53but really love Trinidad
00:35:55and always wanted
00:35:56to do something here
00:35:57and at the University
00:35:58of the West Indies
00:36:00Dr. Susan Burke
00:36:02had a meeting with her
00:36:04and the entire team
00:36:05or department
00:36:06is really excited
00:36:08about hosting
00:36:09the Master Class
00:36:10so the Master Class
00:36:11will be at the University
00:36:12and that will be
00:36:14on the 25th
00:36:16at the University
00:36:17so you can do
00:36:17the Master Class
00:36:18and then there is
00:36:19the Dance Seminar
00:36:21where they can speak
00:36:22to the Artistic Director
00:36:23as a matter of fact
00:36:25the General Manager
00:36:26of the entire
00:36:26ALA organization
00:36:27will be in Trinidad
00:36:29and Tobago
00:36:29so that is also
00:36:31very exciting
00:36:31so he'll try to be
00:36:33on the panel
00:36:33answer any questions
00:36:35that the creatives
00:36:37may have
00:36:38and so that is
00:36:40on the 25th
00:36:41and on the 26th
00:36:42we have two shows
00:36:43that is
00:36:45at 4pm
00:36:46and at 8pm
00:36:48and 4pm
00:36:49we're hoping
00:36:50all the dance
00:36:51community
00:36:51will come out
00:36:53and be excited
00:36:54and be inspired
00:36:56have you been
00:36:59have you been
00:37:02when
00:37:02when you look
00:37:04at dance
00:37:05and on dancers
00:37:07in the Caribbean
00:37:08if you are
00:37:10to judge
00:37:11their experience
00:37:13their expertise
00:37:14their passion
00:37:16their flair
00:37:16right
00:37:17I'm trying to
00:37:18it's coming out
00:37:20yeah
00:37:21how do you compare
00:37:24them
00:37:24as to
00:37:26let's say
00:37:27other
00:37:27international dancers
00:37:29what level
00:37:31are we on
00:37:32I'll start
00:37:33I'll start
00:37:33from the passion
00:37:34and the flair
00:37:35first
00:37:35I think we have
00:37:36that in the Caribbean
00:37:37naturally
00:37:37and funny enough
00:37:39whenever I take
00:37:40these international
00:37:41dancers
00:37:42and we do our
00:37:42own style
00:37:43like we do
00:37:43some dance
00:37:44or anything
00:37:45they are also
00:37:48amazed
00:37:48and they are
00:37:49inspired by us
00:37:50and in terms
00:37:52of you know
00:37:54or areas
00:37:54of technicality
00:37:55I think
00:37:56that is where
00:37:57and it depends
00:37:59on the genre
00:38:00right
00:38:00so for modern
00:38:02contemporary
00:38:02and classical ballet
00:38:05clearly we would
00:38:06need a lot more
00:38:07and the thing is
00:38:08you know
00:38:08I've always said
00:38:09if we had the same
00:38:10kind of opportunities
00:38:11that they had
00:38:12they have in the States
00:38:13so for example
00:38:14most dancers
00:38:15in the region
00:38:16we dance full time
00:38:17and I'm an attorney
00:38:18and I dance
00:38:21with the NDTC
00:38:22where the first play
00:38:23is taken at 7pm
00:38:24at night
00:38:25when we have
00:38:25finished work
00:38:26or you know
00:38:27the dancers
00:38:27who are at university
00:38:29so it is
00:38:31it is not the priority
00:38:32for us
00:38:32because we cannot
00:38:33afford it to be
00:38:34the priority for us
00:38:36but if we had
00:38:36that same opportunity
00:38:37where we're going
00:38:39to a dance studio
00:38:40at 10 in the morning
00:38:41and we go from
00:38:4210 to 5
00:38:43and we're getting
00:38:43a salary
00:38:44I will bet
00:38:46my last dollar
00:38:47that we would be
00:38:48just as great
00:38:48so it is just
00:38:50a matter of the opportunity
00:38:51and the facilities
00:38:53that are there
00:38:55for us in the region
00:38:56but you know
00:38:57passion
00:38:58and flair
00:38:59I hardly find
00:39:01that
00:39:01no
00:39:02no
00:39:02never
00:39:03never
00:39:04that's in the DNA
00:39:05yes
00:39:06right
00:39:06alright
00:39:07so here's what
00:39:08because I know
00:39:09that as it relates
00:39:11to the revelations
00:39:13it's two shows
00:39:14right
00:39:15yes
00:39:15yeah
00:39:16so you do have
00:39:19matinee at 4pm
00:39:20and you have
00:39:21a gala
00:39:22at 8pm
00:39:23correct
00:39:23alright
00:39:23where can people
00:39:24get tickets
00:39:25so the tickets
00:39:26are online
00:39:26at suntix.com
00:39:28and the tickets
00:39:29are already online
00:39:30and I'm reliably
00:39:31informed that
00:39:32they are being bought
00:39:33and you know
00:39:35we just want to
00:39:36encourage the people
00:39:36of Trinidad
00:39:37and Tobago
00:39:37to get on board
00:39:39and get a taste
00:39:42of Revelations
00:39:42if you've not seen
00:39:43it before
00:39:44incidentally
00:39:45Revelations
00:39:45is the most watched
00:39:47modern dance
00:39:47in history
00:39:48so it is a big deal
00:39:51and Alvin Ailey
00:39:52the organisation
00:39:52is a big deal
00:39:53and for them
00:39:55to agree
00:39:55to come to Trinidad
00:39:56it means
00:39:57Trinidad would have
00:39:58checked
00:39:58the boxes
00:39:59that they require
00:40:00for doing
00:40:01international tours
00:40:02and I'm very
00:40:03very happy about that
00:40:04that they believe
00:40:05that they can come
00:40:06to the region
00:40:07and put on
00:40:08a first class production
00:40:10and be very comfortable
00:40:11with it
00:40:12and that
00:40:13to know that
00:40:13the people of the region
00:40:14are going to
00:40:16embrace them
00:40:17it's not something
00:40:18that happens every day
00:40:19no no
00:40:19not at all
00:40:20not at all
00:40:21not at all
00:40:22impossible
00:40:23Marissa
00:40:23is there anything
00:40:24that you'd like
00:40:26to share with us
00:40:26before you leave us
00:40:27this morning
00:40:27well I just want
00:40:28to thank the sponsors
00:40:30who have come
00:40:31on board so far
00:40:32Seaboard
00:40:33Seprod
00:40:34I believe SagiCore
00:40:36and we have written
00:40:37to a number of entities
00:40:38and we are hoping
00:40:39that we'll get
00:40:40some yeses
00:40:41in the coming
00:40:42days or weeks
00:40:43we still are looking
00:40:45for
00:40:46more partnership
00:40:47it is an elaborate
00:40:48task
00:40:51but it is
00:40:52well worth it
00:40:53and I believe
00:40:54the Caribbean
00:40:54is ready for it
00:40:55yeah Marissa
00:40:56it was a pleasure
00:40:57speaking with you
00:40:59this morning
00:40:59thank you very much
00:41:01and thanks for having me
00:41:02of course

00:44:43So, welcome back.
00:44:45So, the Brunswick Color Dash 5K, it's upon us.
00:44:49And we do have in studio this morning, Roxanne Joseph, Senior Brand Manager.
00:44:54Yeah, Roxanne, thank you very much for coming this morning.
00:44:57Good morning, Marlon.
00:44:57Good morning, and thank you for coming.
00:44:59Let's get right into it.
00:45:01The Brunswick Color Dash 5K.
00:45:03Tell us about it.
00:45:04Yes, Brunswick Color Dash 5K.
00:45:06So, the Brunswick Color Dash 5K is in its second year, right?
00:45:10And what it is, it's a fun slash walk run geared towards promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
00:45:18So, whether you are a novice runner or you are more professional, we want you to come out and have a good time.
00:45:28Get your walk, get your run, and so forth.
00:45:31And it's all about healthy and active living.
00:45:33Yeah, all right.
00:45:35So, here's what, eh?
00:45:37Let's talk about the prizes because I understand that you all do have some prizes up for grabs.
00:45:43Yeah, great prizes up for grabs.
00:45:45Yeah.
00:45:45We have over $20,000 in cash prizes.
00:45:48We have hampers and lots of other giveaways on the day.
00:45:52I mean, this is the second year of the event.
00:45:55Last year, we had a resounding success for the event, and we had lots of persons, I mean, overwhelming numbers.
00:46:03Same thing this year.
00:46:04We would have launched off within the second week of May this year, and Marlon, the numbers are overwhelming thus far.
00:46:13So, we are asking persons to register as soon as because we have a cutoff.
00:46:20So, again, if it is persons want to register, they can go to our page, bronswickcolordash5k.com, and you can definitely, you know, register from there.
00:46:33Why Colordash?
00:46:35Colordash, basically, well, if you know Bronswick, we have a portfolio of SKUs, right?
00:46:41And within the Bronswick portfolio, we have different flavors and so forth.
00:46:46So, you will be doused at every mile that you cross with bursts of colorful powder.
00:46:52So, the powder represents the different flavors within our Bronswick brand.
00:46:58I know they have chili over here.
00:46:59Yeah, we have spicy Thai, you know, the spicy Thai chili, which comes in the sardine variant as well as the tuna.
00:47:07Have you ever tasted it before?
00:47:09Yes, yes, it tastes good.
00:47:10How do you eat it?
00:47:11What is best for you?
00:47:13Yes.
00:47:14I'm going to put you on this one.
00:47:15Here's what I do.
00:47:17You put a little mayonnaise in it.
00:47:19Right.
00:47:20And you just mix it up.
00:47:21All right, cool.
00:47:22All right, all right.
00:47:22We're taking that.
00:47:23We all try that.
00:47:24It's very, very simple.
00:47:26So, from now until race time, we are urging you to eat Bronswick every day.
00:47:31Why?
00:47:31Because it contains calcium, omega-3, and so forth, yeah?
00:47:36So, you could get all those in time ready for your race day.
00:47:40So, when and where is the event taking place?
00:47:43So, the event is on Saturday, July 26th at St. Mary's College Grounds.
00:47:48Race time is at 4 p.m.
00:47:50Come early because the numbers start flowing in at around 2 p.m.
00:47:57Last year, we saw persons coming in from, actually, it was 1.30.
00:48:00We saw persons coming in, you know.
00:48:03So, you better come early to get your spot.
00:48:05So, the race begins at the St. Mary's College Grounds.
00:48:07College Grounds from 4 p.m.
00:48:094 p.m. sharp.
00:48:10We start on time.
00:48:11What's the route?
00:48:13So, the route is around the St. Mary's QROC Grounds, around the savannah, yes?
00:48:19Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.
00:48:20Just around the savannah there.
00:48:23All right.
00:48:24Okay.
00:48:24Just around the savannah.
00:48:25Yes, just around the savannah.
00:48:26It is 5K.
00:48:27How do you find it?
00:48:28It is 5K.
00:48:29Yeah.
00:48:30So, you could go on our page as well and you could see the route.
00:48:33All right.
00:48:34So, here's what, huh?
00:48:35I want you to roll out on the day.
00:48:39What can people expect?
00:48:41So, they get there.
00:48:42Well, you would want them there a little before kickoff time, right?
00:48:47So, you get there.
00:48:47We have a team geared towards telling you where to start and so forth to start.
00:48:54And they will take you through.
00:48:55And there are race marshals around the route that could guide you throughout the 5K.
00:48:59But, Roxanne, from what I'm seeing here, this event seems to be for everybody because I'm seeing wellness boosts.
00:49:06For everybody.
00:49:06It's a multi-generational event.
00:49:08Yeah.
00:49:09Massages.
00:49:09Everything.
00:49:10It's a packed, packed, packed event with lots in store.
00:49:14We also have a play area for the kids.
00:49:16Mm-hmm.
00:49:17Again, because it's a family-type event.
00:49:20So, we have a play area for the kids.
00:49:22So, drop the kids off and the kids will get to play in terms of lots of games and so forth.
00:49:27Health screenings.
00:49:28Health screening.
00:49:29We have massage.
00:49:31And we also have something, I don't want to reveal us yet, something nice in store for us runners.
00:49:38Marlon, you look like a runner.
00:49:40Or are you a walker?
00:49:41Why, thank you, Roxanne.
00:49:45You are right on spot.
00:49:47You are right on spot, Roxanne.
00:49:48Which one?
00:49:48A runner or a walker?
00:49:49Both, both, both.
00:49:50Okay, okay, okay, okay.
00:49:51Good.
00:49:52Right?
00:49:52So, there's a live DJ.
00:49:54Live DJ.
00:49:54And, of course, exciting giveaways.
00:49:56Correct.
00:49:56And if you want further information, you can contact us at 296-6934 or you could go on our
00:50:04socials at Brunswick Trinidad or at Brunswick Trinidad TT to get further info.
00:50:10So, again, if you want to register, you can purchase $50 off any Brunswick product and
00:50:15you go to our page, Brunswick Color Dash 5K.
00:50:19Or, if it is, Marlon, we have persons who don't have a credit or a debit card, it's simple.
00:50:25You go to any branch of Kenny's Sports Outlet and you could purchase a promo code and take
00:50:29it from there to register.
00:50:31Yeah.
00:50:31So, you also have a WhatsApp number.
00:50:34Yes, it is 296-6934.
00:50:37So, you can call that number and you can get any, any information possible about the event.
00:50:43All right.
00:50:44Marlon, persons have to come quickly.
00:50:46The numbers are going fast.
00:50:47How much people do you cater for every year?
00:50:49So, we cater for around between 2000 to 25 and we are fast approaching those numbers.
00:50:55I mean, yeah, last year's event was a success, a resounding success.
00:51:00And this year, we had persons calling even before we launched in May about this event.
00:51:06It's a really sought-after event this year.
00:51:09Yeah.
00:51:10All right.
00:51:11So, is it, and I ask this on behalf of our viewers.
00:51:14So, is it that there is going to be appropriate security in place when it comes to health
00:51:22professionals on the scene?
00:51:23Health professionals on the scene, yes.
00:51:24We have the Red Cross and many other health persons on set to be able to take care of the
00:51:32event.
00:51:32And we also have hydration stops around the race course.
00:51:36So, no persons would be left not hydrated.
00:51:40Yeah.
00:51:40All right, Roxanne.
00:51:41We're coming down.
00:51:42Yeah.

00:55:56And it affects our social, occupational, and emotional function.
00:56:01Be viewing Caribbean Medical TV this Sunday at 7.30.
00:56:26All right, everybody, so it's time for your calls, and I do understand that we do have a caller on the line.
00:56:33Good morning, caller.
00:56:35Good morning.
00:56:37Morning.
00:56:38Morning.
00:56:39Well, I like to understand that time you said he can be respected in discipline school.
00:56:44Mm-hmm.
00:56:46I know loitering is a big issue with school children.
00:56:51You know, before school is called, and after school.
00:56:54So I would like to put you to take an active role, you know, in surveilling schools, before and after classes.
00:57:00The other thing I noticed is that Mr. Paris Alwari would have done a great job by asking people who would have lost their job to call to the health staff that they would have, you know, prepared.
00:57:13I wanted to take into consideration the people in Petrotrin and Pia Tech and TFTT and put them on the head of that list.
00:57:23So if there's job placement, that they can be, you know, rehired, because they were fired under the PNM.
00:57:31And I also hope that Mr. Alwari files his application.
00:57:36Thank you very much, my brother.
00:57:38All right, sir.
00:57:38You're calling us on 623-1711.
00:57:40The extension, it's 1995, so you can please call us now.
00:57:45So you would have heard from the Minister of Rural Development and local government this morning, Khadija Amin.
00:57:55She would have said, as of late Wednesday evening, multiple municipal corporations have activated high alert protocols.
00:58:01Field reports confirm street level and residential flooding across several areas, including the Pinaldebi Regional Corporation,
00:58:07Kuba Taviki Talparu Regional Corporation, and Tunapuna Piyaku Regional Corporation.
00:58:12Access to roads has been disrupted, and homes have been inundated in flood-prone areas, including South Oropuch, Kaparo Valley, and near the Carony River, which has seen significant overflow.
00:58:24Of course, the Minister has promised that crews are going to be back out in the field this morning, providing help, assistance to those affected.
00:58:34All right, let's take another call.
00:58:35Good morning, caller.
00:58:36Good morning.
00:58:37Morning.
00:58:39I'm calling from the Bristol area.
00:58:41Yes.
00:58:41Um, this morning we have more in the area because of the flooding.
00:58:47Mm-hmm.
00:58:49The, uh, Carony River, or, what's the new road?
00:58:54And the total of our, and, um, we feel, you know, there's not been a good job in Carony River.
00:59:03Because what they contact us doing, they bend the river, and when the river comes down, it stops going back up in the water.
00:59:13So if they do a good job, there's not much, but I'll try that through the, they, they need to do some, um, funds up in the water, so they can contain that water.
00:59:27And whenever it falls, and whenever it falls, they release it, and I need to do some.
00:59:32Is it that, is it that you're saying you're calling from Brazil?
00:59:35Yes.
00:59:36So, uh, what, what's, what's the situation in Brazil right now?
00:59:41Is it that the roads are impassable?
00:59:45The roads are impassable on the Tumpuna Road.
00:59:48Uh-huh.
00:59:49So, you can't get a goal there.
00:59:52You also, if you're partial after, you're going to central in the area, the water will be going down the next year away.
00:59:59So, the water comes down the stages.
01:00:00Not in Brazil, but, uh, I can't say, in, um, the central in the area might be flooded already down.
01:00:15All right.
01:00:16Because all the water goes down there in stages, like I said, next two hours, there are more water in central in that.
01:00:22Wiley water will not appear.
01:00:23Yeah.
01:00:24Yeah.
01:00:25So, is it that you would have seen people, crews from the corporations yesterday in your community trying to provide help to you all?
01:00:34No, but in that case, they can't provide help because, um, that's on the roadway itself, Tumpuna Road is called the road.
01:00:43Okay.
01:00:44So, that is behind Greenville.
01:00:47Okay.
01:00:47So, what else do they just make our environment like, uh, cross by Greenville.
01:00:51But when tied high, that water will be built up.
01:00:54Yeah.
01:00:55And it will flood the bill too.
01:00:58So, what, what I'm saying, if, if, if, if, if, if that were proper working in the river, like drenching the river, it will help and widen the river.
01:01:08Okay.
01:01:09Do you all need anything, do you all need anything in particular right now in Brazil?
01:01:14No.
01:01:16All right.
01:01:16Okay.
01:01:16Like I said, the Brazil area doesn't, but the, the, the, the river lower, it will cross in you and you can't go out.
01:01:24All right.
01:01:25The Maroon and you are.
01:01:27Okay.
01:01:27So, thank you very much.
01:01:29And we hope that things do improve for you all in the Brazil area.
01:01:34So, the ministry has requested assistance from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, including troop carriers, as the minister would have told you this morning,
01:01:41to assist students in the Penal-Debu region.
01:01:43Additionally, dinghies and trucks have been deployed across key regions to ensure students from flood-affected areas are transported safely to and from their examination centers.
01:01:54Let's take another call.
01:01:55Good morning, caller.
01:01:57Good morning, Marlon.
01:01:58How are you going?
01:01:58I'm good, sir.
01:02:00You had to speak about anything or the flood?
01:02:02No, you go ahead.
01:02:04I want to speak about this school violence, right?
01:02:06Mm-hmm.
01:02:06I agree.
01:02:08Now, I did not vote for Mrs. Kamlai.
01:02:11But you see, that policy she's bringing there to come down on these school children that's fighting in school, something needs to be done.
01:02:17These young people and them, I heard a voice message yesterday from one of these school girls.
01:02:21These young children talking like they're big people.
01:02:25Like, they're living in a house with no kind of rules and regulations.
01:02:28We know some of them come from single-parent homes that is run by a mother that look like she's able.
01:02:33These children look like they're going to party without their parents or siblings, you know.
01:02:38They're smoking marijuana.
01:02:40And they have a lot of women smoking more weed than men nowadays, eh?
01:02:44All in the public, when they think they're watching their mouth, they're dealing with this marijuana smoking.
01:02:48So, and these pills and the party and drinking.
01:02:51So, when these things, you're starting to get back sober, it's a set of vexation.
01:02:55People want to know why people are so angry and violent and all this kind of thing and so on.
01:02:59The addiction with these things on them, they start to get violent.
01:03:03It simmered down from the home into the children.
01:03:06And nobody are leading nobody in the right direction.
01:03:10I need me any pastors on them talking outside here to try to see if they could try to, you know, put some spirituality into people.
01:03:15I don't want to blame them, eh?
01:03:16Because the home ought to be run by somebody.
01:03:18This is what's going on outside here with these young people.
01:03:22So, enforce the law because they're not people working hard to send their children to school.
01:03:26And when they send their children to school, you don't want to hear they get beat up.
01:03:29Their face gets bashed.
01:03:31All this kind of thing.
01:03:32You have to go in the hospital for corrective surgery and all these things.
01:03:35The good parents who are trying with their children have to be dealing with this thing in society that they're the broken home that some of these children come from.
01:03:44So, enforce the law on these children.
01:03:47Have a good day, Mother.
01:03:48All right.
01:03:49Thank you very much, sir.
01:03:50You're calling us on 623-1711.
01:03:51The extension, it's 1995.
01:03:53So, we are taking your calls.
01:03:55If there are people who are affected by the floods and the torrential rains and you want to use the opportunity to call us and tell us about your situation, well, do take the opportunity.
01:04:09All right.
01:04:09Let's take another call.
01:04:10Good morning, caller.
01:04:13Caller, are you there?
01:04:14Yeah, good morning.
01:04:15Morning, sir.
01:04:16Yeah, I'm a retired junior superintendent of police.
01:04:21Yes, sir.
01:04:22I just want to make a short comment on the school violence.
01:04:27Despite the Prime Minister taking a stern stance on the violence in schools, just a deal to ask that these children are commanded this in Cuba.
01:04:35So, I am of the view that the children are trying to send a message back to the Prime Minister through gang-style ways and means.
01:04:48And I am also of the view that the parents should be held accountable.
01:04:51I believe that the parents should also be charged.
01:04:54To the other inspect, we'll comment.
01:04:56All right, sir.
01:04:57Thank you very much.
01:04:58You're calling us on 623-17-11, the extension.
01:05:01It's 1995.
01:05:03You know, I think that it's a problem that we have been speaking about for so long.
01:05:09As I said to the NPTA president this morning, there was the argument a few years ago, well, here's what.
01:05:16Yes, we do have a problem in the schools, but we don't want to treat people as criminals while they may be engaging in criminal acts, but you don't want to treat them as criminals.
01:05:26And I think that really time has run out as it relates to dealing with this situation and the big stick approach is being instituted now.
01:05:34So, let's see how things work out.
01:05:36As we discussed this morning, sometimes you expel a student, they see it as a badge of honor.
01:05:41Sometimes you suspend them, and in some cases, they go to the river, they go to the beach, they, you know, they're all over the place.
01:05:50So, something has to be done about it.
01:05:53But again, you can't try to transform, reform students when they get to the ages of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.
01:06:02The horse has bolted the stable.
01:06:04So, you have to do these things, inculcate a certain type of behavior and respect for oneself and respect for other people at a very young age.
01:06:15It could start at the preschool level.
01:06:17What do you think about that?
01:06:18You're calling ourselves 623-1711, the extension.
01:06:22It's 1995.
01:06:24I think I told you all.
01:06:25I was listening to the radio, one of those urban stations, and I heard a mother.
01:06:29That person called in, and she said, I want to big up my children and whatever, and we're listening to some music here, and we're going to roll up some things.
01:06:38And so, imagine that.
01:06:40A mother is saying they're going to roll up and smoke in front of their children.
01:06:44Yeah?
01:06:45Let's take another call.
01:06:46Good morning, caller.
01:06:49Caller, good morning.
01:06:51Good morning, Mama.
01:06:52Morning.
01:06:53I'm calling concerning the school violence.
01:06:55Yes.
01:06:56I think these children should be sent to YPC, because as young children going to school, I don't think they want to go to jail.
01:07:09They don't know what it is like.
01:07:11So, send them to jail.
01:07:13Let them see what it is like in there.
01:07:15Let them get disciplined in there.
01:07:17And then maybe I can put them back into the school system and see where it goes and monitor them.
01:07:22Charge the parents, because some of the parents condone those behaviors.
01:07:29You can send your child to school and your child being attacked by four or five kids.
01:07:32That is not fair.
01:07:34Thank you, Marlon.
01:07:35Have a good day.
01:07:35Thank you very much, ma'am.
01:07:36You're calling us on 623-1711, the extension.
01:07:39It's 1995.
01:07:42It's beautiful, but still cold and wet day in Trinidad and Tobago, right?
01:07:48As it relates to shelter and safety advisory, primary schools and community centers.
01:07:53All right, let's take another call.
01:07:54Good morning, caller.
01:07:56Hello, good morning.
01:07:58Morning.
01:07:58Um, Marlon, these problems with these children and them, it starts from home.
01:08:05Yes.
01:08:06Like, we all know that, and we keep on saying that.
01:08:10We answer them, and it's our innocent parents also.
01:08:14Because they're not sending to school.
01:08:16I was a student in school also.
01:08:18And not everything you let your parents know, whether it's wrong or it's right.
01:08:23But most of them children, the Bible, since they come out, since the Bible come out of
01:08:32the school and with religious knowledge, these children and them have no fear for God, they
01:08:37have no fear for teachers, they have no fear for parents.
01:08:40Because some of them disrespected the parents at home.
01:08:43The frightened things speak to them.
01:08:46But these children and them, the whole problem of everything, it lacks discipline.
01:08:51And these children and them are very indisciplined.
01:08:55Very, very much indisciplined.
01:08:58They're very disrespectful to the teacher.
01:09:01Hitmen are, I will call the police.
01:09:04They tell the parents, the teacher, and everybody, we don't say that you don't have to hit children.
01:09:10You don't have to hit children, but yet still, they're always contesting you or challenging
01:09:15you because they tell us that they have all the rights.
01:09:1920 years have rights.
01:09:20But yet still, you see that discipline is the whole problem.
01:09:28It's the whole, whole problem.
01:09:31And as I say, as the previous college just said, YTC, they can finish the school in the
01:09:40year, they can finish the exam, they can finish the thing.
01:09:42But they have to learn discipline.
01:09:45They have to learn discipline.
01:09:47They have to learn to take orders and understand what society wants.
01:09:51And they have to give that respect.
01:09:53And another problem is just shipping off of the conversation we have in here.
01:10:02We never fix that big hole on Pedrick Street near the ID card office.
01:10:07And the one in the middle of Queen Street.
01:10:08We never fix that.
01:10:11It's in the middle of the road.
01:10:12Well, I'm sure that they're hearing you this morning, right?
01:10:16Because they did it.
01:10:18I believe some years ago, Manning was taking Landtack.
01:10:21I mean, I'm not Landtack vehicle.
01:10:23We've got a road truck.
01:10:25And I have a vehicle.
01:10:26And when you go down and leave for a facility where there's rainfall and the wall falling
01:10:32up with water, then that's a much of your accident.
01:10:38All right.
01:10:39Thank you very much.
01:10:41Hopefully, the Ministry of Works would have heard you.
01:10:44And the Mayor of Port of Spain would have heard you.
01:10:49So hopefully, that problem is addressed sometime soon.
01:10:53All right.
01:10:53So you're calling us on 623-1711.
01:10:55The extension, it's 1995.
01:10:57Listen, eh?
01:10:58You see this situation with school violence?
01:11:03It's a science.
01:11:04And you have to know how to deal with that, eh?
01:11:08You just have to know how to deal with that because you don't want to create a situation
01:11:12where it impacts in a worse way on the individual.
01:11:17All right?
01:11:17Let's take a call.
01:11:18Good morning, caller.
01:11:19Good morning, Marlon.
01:11:20Morning.
01:11:20Yeah, Marlon, this problem with the children, you know, no amount of threat or promises to
01:11:32do what you have to do with change their behavior right now because there are no consequences.
01:11:40And you know, Marlon, even though we send these children, take them out and take them to some
01:11:46remedial source or something.
01:11:49Yeah.
01:11:49They go back home to the environment where these things originate.
01:11:53Mm-hmm.
01:11:54So you have to identify these children from an early age.
01:11:59And this is the responsibility of these parents.
01:12:01If it is, you need help and you recognize you have some delinquent kids in your home and you
01:12:07reach out to get help to them.
01:12:10But when it reaches the stage, Marlon, you've got to take these children away from their home,
01:12:15from that environment, put them in another environment where they are, I don't want to use the word
01:12:23incarcerated, but where they are kept for a period of time where we can instill some discipline
01:12:29and education.
01:12:32They get a school.
01:12:33It doesn't have to be the white, although I believe the white disease should be made into
01:12:37or some sort of a school because they're in the center.
01:12:41But they have to be taken away from that environment for a period of time where they have no parents
01:12:48or no mommy coming to see them and all kinds of things like that.
01:12:52And we've got to provision.
01:12:54And this is a matter for our court, the children's court.
01:12:57That is what the children's court are for.
01:12:59You cannot treat these kids with kid gloves.
01:13:03It is a serious thing now and it's going to get worse.
01:13:06So we have to take the decisive action here, Marlon.
01:13:09Yeah, I hear you.
01:13:12Thank you very much.
01:13:13It's not something to get emotional about.
01:13:18It takes analytical thinking as to how we go forward with this.
01:13:25I have said in the past, I have said, yeah, lock them up too.
01:13:29And I've said in some cases, yeah, put a cell in every school to deal with them.
01:13:33Yeah, that was emotion.
01:13:34But I'm just saying that if you are dealing with these children, while they are, and we vex that they are involving themselves in this sort of activity
01:13:46and they're attacking people and it's criminal activity, but there has to be a way to try to reach them and touch them
01:13:54and say to them, what you're doing is wrong and change your ways, you know?
01:13:59So that's the science.
01:14:00Let's take a call.
01:14:01Good morning, caller.
01:14:02Good morning.
01:14:03Good morning, Marlon, and to all your listeners.
01:14:06Yes.
01:14:06Good morning, Marlon, and to all your listeners, there's a booth right outside the school, inside the school.
01:14:22And there's a security guard who is always there, probably 24-7.
01:14:28And that person goes in and comes out.
01:14:34They have a strict, strict protocol in that school.
01:14:38And I'm surprised that the police have taken so long to go and get the permission.
01:14:41But more importantly, the TTPF and the choice of a new police commission, I have a problem with the choice of them that the POLC has nominated.
01:14:57I am a stakeholder.
01:14:59I want to basically fulfill the mandate of the prime minister.
01:15:05Six months' time, I want a helper to reduce the crime.
01:15:11The police service commission and the parliament had mocked up with the choice of selection of the COP for many times.
01:15:22This time, we have to get it right.
01:15:24And I have to voice my opinion on what I'm seeing.
01:15:28I want to know if the police commission is complicit or compromising.
01:15:35Qualification, because they are before the courts now with a particular sergeant who they refuse to accept his transcripts for masters in law and distinction.
01:15:51And now it appears that they're accepting a qualification out of El Salvador.
01:15:58So, how are we going to move forward if we shift in the good mood in getting qualified people as police commissioner?
01:16:08The other thing is, this man appears to be in special branch.
01:16:12Special branch has been doing a number of investigations, and we have not heard anything about human trafficking, et cetera.
01:16:19Recently, the former prime minister made an issue on a Facebook page with respect to a former foreign minister, starting with A, about involvement in women.
01:16:35He hasn't done anything about that.
01:16:37I did not hear any investigation over that.
01:16:40Yesterday, on a talk show program, a former minister of finance, any minister, Mrs. Nunez Shichera, has alleged a lot of unforgiving behavior by senior people in the government.
01:16:57All right.
01:16:58That's going to do it for our calls for today, everybody.
01:17:01Thank you to all of you.
