Kemi Badenoch welcomed the winter fuel payment U-turn, insisting it should have happened sooner. Speaking on Monday, the Conservative party leader said: "I'm glad the government has finally done this but what took them so long? I asked Keir Starmer six times at the despatch box at PMQ's why he was doing this and that he needed to reverse it."

00:00Well, we've been campaigning for them to reverse the winter fuel allowance,
00:03so I'm glad that the government has finally done this.
00:06But what took them so long?
00:07I asked Keir Starmer six times at the dispatch box, at PMQs,
00:11why was he doing this? He needed to reverse it.
00:13Labour MPs voted again and again and again
00:16when we were telling them that it was the wrong thing to do.
00:19And now here we are with a U-turn.
00:21Why did Labour do this?
00:23It was because they wanted to give a bung to their friends in the unions,
00:26so they took money away from pensioners and gave it to train drivers.
00:30We would never have done this in the first place.
00:32So this is a mess of their own making.
00:34We can all talk about what a new system can look like,
00:36but the point is Labour have made a mess and now they're having to clean it up.
00:40They put a lot of people through hardship,
00:42people having to choose between heating and eating, and that's just chaos.
00:45To be honest, there was another thing.
00:47Go ahead, everybody.
