00:16But there's a guy who would like to stop that from happening, and wow, has he tried,
00:20and he came so close again in that moto one, the number seven of Aaron Plessinger.
00:26Now, surprisingly enough, has not won a moto on a 450.
00:30Maybe he can get it done today.

00:34Well, for Eli Tomac, he took a huge step last weekend winning that first moto,
00:39and I think he showed that Jett Lawrence has vulnerabilities,
00:42but vulnerability only matters if you capitalize on it, and that's the ask for Eli Tomac.
00:47He sits 20 points down in this championship.
00:50He's got to start reeling it in, and that has to start here in moto two.
00:53And a surprise here, JT, the 32 of Justin Cooper, fast qualifier this morning,
01:00seven starts at this track, six podiums, yet a distant fifth in the first moto.
01:06We thought he'd be a contender for that podium or even the win.
01:08Has to bounce back now.
01:09And I'm Hunter Lawrence.

01:16I know we're talking about my younger brother, Jett, but I've won these things.

01:21I was close to him.

01:32They always get close to the 18 of Jett Lawrence, but in the end,
01:36he has won 33 of the first 37 motos of his 450 motocross career.
01:42None closer than what we saw an hour ago.
01:45Plessinger even passed him for the lead.
01:47He was able to fight back.
01:49His track is so dynamic.
01:51Songriders all have good and bad parts of that first race.
01:54This is race two.
01:55We'll take those results, combine them with this,
01:58determine the day's overall winner.

02:11There's so much confidence these guys got to know.

02:37It's Cody Schock going to grab the lead over Cooper Webb.

02:48When Cody Schock cut across, he actually clipped Hunter Lawrence's front wheel.

02:55But it's the Cooper Webb, our Supercross champion, said,

02:59I know how to ride as well.
03:02And Cooper, yeah, the outside, that number two,
03:05trying to transition from the stadium championship indoors
03:07and get his motocross game down.
03:10And he's challenging Schock, the private tier racer,
03:12backed by Club of Mets, Muckoff, and FXR.
03:15Yeah, it looks like somebody went down on that second,
03:17the bottom corner on that 180 in that news section.
03:20I wonder who that is.
03:23Webb's going for the lead, James.

03:29with how difficult this racetrack is,
03:31once you get in a run, you might have an opportunity
03:33to try to go around Cody.

03:37Yeah, doing it well for the team that gets a little bit of support from Yamaha,
03:40but not the full stuff like Webb has.
03:42Webb goes for the number one spot again, side by side.
03:47Yeah, he had that pass made, but then the way the angle was,
03:50Cody just rode around the outside of him.
03:53And he did.
03:54So the 37 gets it back.
03:56The crowd salutes him.
03:58Justin Cooper, fourth, and Hunter Lawrence in red there in third,
04:01moving up on the leaders.
04:04Yeah, I don't see Eli Tomac.
04:06He was 14th off the start.
04:08Plessinger is right behind Jett Lawrence.

04:14And you can see Jett there in the bottom box with Plessinger right behind him.

04:21Jett's trying to go up the inside, or Hunter, excuse me,
04:24around the outside of Cooper at this point.

04:35These tracks have been changing every single time they've been on it.

04:42He's trying to move forward because he knows his younger brother is back there around.
04:46Oh, and Hunter Lawrence makes the move.

04:53They get some help from Yamaha, like I said,
04:54but not the full factory equipment.
04:56And the rider out of Delaware continues to lead,
04:59but it is tightening up because Justin Cooper and Jett Lawrence are all in the fight now.

05:06He's going to shock the world.
05:07He's going to have more opportunities to get some more factory stuff.
05:10Look at the guys behind him, championship champions.
05:13Justin Cooper just made his way around his teammate.
05:16Yes, he's passed the Cooper Webb.
05:18Yes, and Justin Cooper on the 32 going after the 96 of Hunter Lawrence for second.
05:23But they're all trailing Cody Shock.
05:26What a ride for this guy.
05:29And he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
05:32And he'll tell you when he runs up front like this, and he's done it before,
05:35even he has to check himself a little bit.
05:37He'll surprise himself.
05:38He knows that he's running with the big names, and he respects their resume.
05:42Aaron Flesinger goes around outside of Cooper Webb.
05:45Things are starting to happen fast for our reigning Supercross champion.
05:49And don't look now, but I see that number three right behind Cooper Webb.
05:53So he's made some time up, not letting these boys go.
05:56That's Eli Tomac, that is.
05:58Now, James, as well as Shock is riding, is it helping keep that field together?
06:02Because they're all trying different lines.
06:04Is that helping Tomac, Flesinger, Shet Lawrence stay in the fight?
06:08Yeah, no, 100%, but at the same time, Cody's riding really good.
06:12I mean, we see how difficult it is to make some passes around this racetrack.
06:15Hunter's trying it now, James.
06:16He's on the inside of Shock.
06:18Oh, and Justin Cooper, he made the move as well.
06:21Yeah, Cody, which he had about another couple inches on them legs, a little short.
06:25He could get them feet down.
06:26Small mistake, and as quickly as he was leading, he ends up in third place,
06:30and he's just going to look around and see Jett Lawrence.

06:34Yeah, again, a disappointing fifth in the first race.

07:01But Hunter Lawrence closes that door.
07:04And somehow Jett Lawrence has slipped into third.

07:09Yeah, what you're going to watch is Justin Cooper setting up a pass
07:13and all the different angles he's going to have to take.
07:15He's going to have to be on the outside here to set him up on the inside.
07:18We know this next section, these guys have been struggling here.
07:21If Hunter Lawrence gets stuck on the inside,
07:22Justin might have an opportunity to go around the outside of here.

07:28He's yet to win one of these 450 motos on that number 32.
07:32He's got a golden opportunity, but he's got to deal now with both Lawrence brothers
07:36because Jett has joined the party.
07:39I think Jett is going to remain pretty patient here.
07:44He's watching these two go crazy out front.
07:46Justin Cooper watching down the hill, taking the lead.
07:49The one thing that will change this entire scenario for Jett Lawrence
07:53is if AP or Tomac show him a wheel.
07:55Because as of right now, he has no way to know where those two are.
07:58He can only look at the guys in front of him and gauge himself off of that.
08:01So watch for AP and Tomac.
08:03They're in their own battle in that bottom box.
08:05If they come up and are able to pressure Jett, the entire game will change.
08:08Yes, they need to get around Cody Schock, who's still holding strong in fourth.
08:12You see him in that high-vis green gear in the bottom box.
08:15Meanwhile, the Lawrence is ganging up on Justin Cooper.
08:18Yeah, now he's getting jumped by the brothers up in here.
08:21But Justin Cooper was our fastest qualifier by over a second.
08:25So he has some pace.
08:26And, yeah, that fifth place, that first moto is definitely not what he wanted.
08:30But we know this track, if you're not in tow, you lose a lot of time.
08:33So Justin might be a lot faster.
08:36As we watch Eli Tomac gets around Cody Schock up the inside.
08:40And Plessinger did as well, James.
08:41So Plessinger and Tomac, they have the speed to get to the front.
08:45Can they make that gap close and make it a five-rider battle for this lead?
08:51Yeah, they have to because the way this racetrack is, if you lose the toe to the leaders,
08:57you're going to have that gap in about 50 seconds.
08:59As we watch, it's like Eli Tomac just trying to get up the inside.
09:03We watched Justin Cooper and Hunter Lawrence go to the lap before.
09:06The same scenario happened.
09:07So it's going to be important for these guys not to slow each other down
09:10and make sure they keep that gap and move it forward.
09:12I think they're closing.
09:13I think Plessinger and Orange, the red gear there of Tomac,
09:16they are catching the lead trio.
09:18This is an incredible setup.
09:21Is it the racetrack that is breeding?
09:23Everyone is having good and bad moments throughout the races.

09:27You've got to give the track crew a lot of credit here at Thunder Valley.
09:30When you make some changes, sometimes it gets a little dicey.
09:33You never know how it's going to play out.
09:35But so far, this racetrack has been very racy for these guys.
09:38A lot of opportunities to pass.
09:39And I believe we're going to have some more passing here coming up real soon, Jason.
09:44Yeah, well, these are the two most popular riders in the field.
09:47The cowboy we call the number seven of Aaron Plessinger.
09:51Everywhere we go, you see the photo there of the cowboy hat.
09:54He is so loose, so wide open at the races.
09:57And then Tomac has the fans because this is his home state.
10:00If they can get to that lead trio, this place is going to go crazy.
10:04And they can see Chet Lawrence ahead of them.
10:07And they're catching him.
10:08Yeah, they're starting to close.
10:09And it's giving them Eli confidence.
10:11But he was in the same position earlier in the first moto,
10:14not being this close to Jett Lawrence.
10:16But Hunter Lawrence was there.
10:17And he couldn't get around them.
10:18And we saw what ended up happening.
10:20So whatever Eli does, he needs to just keep that momentum going.
10:24Just try not to get stuck behind Aaron Plessinger.
10:26He might try to make the move up here.
10:27It might happen.
10:28It's the biggest jump on the track.
10:33Here's the fan section.

10:43Meanwhile, Justin Cooper, James, just threw down a 2.12.
10:46Fastest lap of the race.
10:48And he's opened up a second and a half advantage over Hunter Lawrence.

10:51No, he's riding really good.
10:53And when you think about Justin Cooper, the way he rides a motorcycle,
10:55it's just what we witnessed in the 250 class.
10:57And Chance Hyman is very patient, very light on the motorcycle.
11:01So Justin's going to be able to maybe run these lap times
11:04and not be taking too many chances,
11:06which is going to make Jett Lawrence and Hunter Lawrence have to push.
11:09When you saw with Hayden Deegan, mistakes,
11:11they'll come up and bite you if you end up overriding this racetrack.
11:16Now the brothers from Australia, Hunter and Jett Lawrence,
11:19but in a fight for second behind Justin Cooper.
11:22And these two have been duking it out for the better part of a year now
11:26in the 450 class.
11:28But can they keep Justin Cooper in sight?
11:30Will, he's riding very well.
11:32He's riding very well.
11:33And team manager Rich Simmons thinks he's going to be doing better
11:37than he was this time last year.
11:38What does that mean?
11:39It means he'll be able to keep this kind of pace up late into the motor.
11:43He said last year he was able to do this for 25.
11:4625 minutes and then he had nothing left.
11:48He said his fitness is considerably better than it was last year.
11:51So he says now he's got a full 30 in,
11:53but we've got to see him out front to do it.
11:56We've got this scenario he also added on top of that.
11:58He's like, I know his look.
12:00He's a quiet guy.
12:02He doesn't say too much.
12:03He's like, when he comes in qualifying, practices in the morning,
12:06and he gives me that look, he's like, I know confidence is there.
12:10And that's what he told me he was seeing today.
12:13You can see it, Will.
12:14He has a two-and-a-half-second lead now.
12:16And this fourth pack, the Loraxes, Plessinger and Tomek are battling,
12:22yet they're not able to catch Justin Cooper.
12:25Yeah, Justin Cooper is getting away from these guys.
12:28And the more they start racing each other,
12:30it's going to allow Justin Cooper to be able to get that gap.
12:33And, Will, I saw that same look as well when Justin Cooper,
12:36after Tom qualifying.
12:38Oh, Cody Schock, early race leader.
12:41That was a great Cinderella story.
12:42He has gone down from sixth place.
12:45Looks like he's okay.
12:47Yeah, it looks like that's almost at the top of the track.
12:49But look at Eli Tomac.
12:51He's got to be able to make a move.
12:53And I think once he does that, man, I think it would give him a lot of confidence
12:56because whoever he's been next to in the motors,
12:59he hasn't been able to get around them,
13:00which is frustrating for a guy like Eli Tomac for sure.

13:09Missed this race the last couple of years with injuries.

13:22which is going to be hard because how loud that Yamaha is.

18:39We talked earlier in this moto about Jet remaining patient until he couldn't anymore.

18:46He was able to watch AP and Tomek close down, and he had to make a move on Hunter.
18:50That really kind of sparked a charge from him as he goes after Justin Cooper.
18:55I don't think he really wanted to push this early, but he's kind of had to now because
18:58Eli Tomek has forced the issue as well.

19:02Yeah, he knows because it's a good point.
19:05If Jet can get around him, he can put some gap in between Eli.

20:23And if Eli to have a chance to win this race, he has to go right now.

20:58In an interview this week, Justin Cooper said it's starting to get frustrating seeing not
21:02just Jet Lawrence winning so much, but how easy he makes it look.

22:56Well, you know, we saw this showdown at the opening round at Fox Raceway two weeks ago,
23:01and Eli was not able to make the move.
23:03But this is a heavyweight battle.

23:07However you want to phrase it, these are the best two motocross riders on the planet going
23:11head-to-head for the second time this season.
23:14As you see Eli making a mistake, that is a testament to the limit they are on.
23:18They are both pushing to the very edge, and they are absolutely checking out on the likes
23:22of Justin Cooper, Hunter Lawrence, and the rest.

23:28I was just thinking about that as we were going, you know, that first race at Paula, and it
23:32was like Eli was able to close in on him.
23:34But as soon as he got close to Jet, he would almost make a mistake because he got too excited.
23:39So let's see if he can, you know, fix that.
23:42He's able to close back in because clearly he has the pace to be able to close in on Jet,
23:46but he's got to clean those corners up.
23:48If he's able to, he might be able to get around and see if he uses his new line that
23:52he found from the last lap from Justin Cooper.

23:58He'll use it to close it on Lawrence.

27:09Well, what a nice corner by Eli, and you wouldn't think 1.8 seconds is a lot, but the way this
27:15racetrack is, it's so easy to make a mistake, and if you're Eli Tomac, just like we saw
27:20at the first opening round, you get so close.
27:22You're like, I want to get him now, but you've got to be patient because clearly you have
27:26the pace to catch this guy.
27:28It's the mistakes that are killing you, and when you get close to him, it makes it, but
27:32at the same time, that's the number 18, just executing his race better than anyone at this
27:36point.

27:41As we see him make a small mistake there.
27:43We didn't know what we were going to get, James, when we came into this race series here because
27:47we haven't seen Eli on track for a while.
27:49I got to talk to his dad, the mountain bike legend that is John Tomac yesterday, and I
27:55said to him, how are we seeing the best version of your son here at 32 years old?
28:00He said, well, he's actually been through something that he's never experienced before in his career,
28:03and that's the race, the three injuries that he kind of had in a row, the Achilles, then
28:07his thumb, and then the broken leg.
28:10He said that's given him time to actually regroup, look at his diet, assess his training, and
28:15just train, just focus on it.
28:17He said he's never had that before, so that's how you say it, and he did say if it wasn't
28:22for those injuries, maybe he would have retired already, so we may be seeing Eli Tomac now
28:27because of that and not in spite of it.
28:29That's a great point, Will, and these fans are all the better for it because Lawrence has
28:33arrived as considered the next star of the sport, but Tomac is still there to challenge
28:38him.
28:40Gap still where it was, 1.7 seconds as the clock ticks down.
28:44It'll be two to go when that clock expires.

28:49He goes a little bit farther inside than he has been.
28:51He's been running outside, and he's just been losing a lot of it, so, yeah, to Will's point,
28:55I remember when I did my ACL back in 07, I actually ended up missing the end of that series
29:01and then the beginning of the next series because I tore it again, and that year gave me that
29:05break, so I probably would have retired another year or two earlier because of that, so where
29:09Eli's feeling, I completely understand, and he's having fun.

29:16And his health seems to be good.

29:20I would say on the motorcycle, I feel 100%.
29:25I'm not really dealing with any side effects.
29:30There's some cross-training things that I'm not, that I still actually feel in my leg,
29:34but on the motorcycle, I can do anything I want.
29:39Well, it's incredible how tough and motivated Tomac is.
29:42He broke his leg earlier this year in a Supercross race in qualifying.
29:47He's still raced the race and finished 17th with a leg that turned out to be broken.
29:55That's how tough this guy is.
29:57That's how badly the four-time champion wants to get back to the top,
30:00and he is not making life easy on Chet Lawrence.
30:04No, he's definitely not.
30:05He's going for it, and the last time I was 100%, it seems like when I just came out,
30:09my mom's stomach, so I don't think anything, these guys can walk.
30:14We're 100% ready to go, and these guys are giving 110% off.
30:18Oh, no! Tomac goes down!
30:21Yeah, and you felt, this is what I was talking about.
30:23He closed in on Chet Lawrence and just trying to push.
30:28Easy to happen.
30:29Both these riders are on his limit,
30:30and the first one to make the mistake was the number three, Eli Tomac.
30:37Unbelievable to see these two push each other.
30:39You rarely see those types of mistakes from Tomac.
30:42He had one last week as well trying to come through the pack.
30:45These guys are just leaving it all out there.
30:49Yeah, I know it's frustrating, but it's clearly easy.
30:51Now, look how he's closed on Chet.
30:53He goes in this corner and just really just pushing it.
30:56What you see is his front end,
30:58and he started losing his front end earlier in that corner,
31:00and he just starts falling over.
31:02He loses the front end, and at this point,
31:04he just falls over and hits that berm,
31:06and just easy mistake to happen.
31:08This could have happened five times a lap.
31:10It's just that finally it got him.
31:12And Justin Cooper hanging in there from third.
31:15This is the rider that led the race early out of Long Island, New York,
31:18but when Lawrence and Tomac upped the pace,
31:20they pulled away from him.
31:22Can he take advantage of that Tomac fall?
31:23He has the number three back at his sights for second.
31:29Yeah, and when you're Eli Tomac,
31:31the hardest thing to do at this point,
31:33because you're all about winning races,
31:35so it might allow Justin Cooper to get back in the picture,
31:38because, you know, at this point, he's like,
31:39man, all's for nothing.
31:41I want to win.
31:42I'm not here to get second place.
31:43Just that you keep focused, long series, long championship,
31:47and love what he's got going on right now.
31:49And here's what's incredible.
31:51If Jett Lawrence hangs on to win this one,
31:53he will tie Kent Howerton for 10th all time.
31:56It wins in this class,
31:58and he's only about two years, two calendar years into it.
32:02Jumping into the class of 2023,
32:04he is starting to move up that overall win list,
32:07and there you see him right there.
32:09He has 17 in 18 career starts.
32:13He's trying to be 18 out of 19.
32:16That is unbelievable.
32:18No, it's insane, to be honest, people.
32:21Like, what he's doing out here is really something special,
32:25and the way he rides a motorcycle,
32:27it's almost the same way he's climbing up these records
32:29that I didn't even realize that he won 17 out of 18
32:32until we were looking at the stats
32:34because how consistently he does it,
32:37but also how close everyone else has been,
32:39but this kid just continues to win another race.
32:42Eli was right there on him, close to him.
32:45He just passed in the first moto, Jett Lawrence, that is,
32:47but somehow this kid stands up,
32:50keeps his composure, and he ends up walking away,
32:53and if he can go with another two-and-a-half laps,
32:55it'll be another overall win,
32:57and no matter how close they are,
32:58they're still not close enough to win.

33:04They had him on the ropes,
33:05but he always figures out a way.
33:08Looks like Tomac, you see Shock going by,

33:10the early race leader after a fall.

33:17Not quite close enough to challenge.
33:20Tomac, he's trying to get around the 199,
33:22and John Short on the red machine,
33:23he is a lap down.
33:25Still a good run for Justin Cooper
33:28in his second year on the big 450
33:30and continuing to make gains.
33:32Yeah, I know, a good ride by,
33:34I mean, all three of these guys,
33:35actually all the top five,
33:36Hunter Lawrence,
33:37real good Aaron Plessinger,
33:38Cooper Webb,
33:39you know, but at the same time,
33:41the reason why the rides don't feel that good
33:43is because the same guy continues to win,
33:45and I know that's frustrating for a lot of these guys,
33:47and especially Eli and Justin Cooper,
33:49who have hopes and have the speed to win,
33:52but seem they can't get it done,
33:54and, you know, I know it's tough,
33:56and earlier in practice,
33:57you asked me when we saw Jet Lawrence,
33:59he was in fourth after that first practice,
34:00you asked me,
34:01is that something?
34:02And I'm like, no.
34:03Well, this is kind of why,
34:04because when the race comes down,
34:06no matter what happens,
34:07this kid shows up,
34:09and he's able to answer the bell
34:10on any question anybody asks him.
34:12No doubt about it.
34:13As for Justin Cooper,
34:14again, continuing to build
34:16in his second year on the big 450.
34:18We asked him about his advancements yesterday.
34:21I've already had four out of the last five,
34:23and I think we're, you know,
34:26it's all there.
34:27It's really close.
34:29This is a really good track for me,
34:30so this might be the weekend,
34:31but either way,
34:32I've been really happy
34:33with how everything's going,
34:35and bike team,
34:36everything's working really great,
34:37and, yeah, I really love this place.
34:40I've only been off the podium here
34:41like once in my nine years,
34:43so, and that was with a 3-3,
34:45which is crazy,
34:46so it's a good track for me,
34:48and, yeah, hopefully we can
34:50at least get a moto win.
34:52That would be cool,
34:53and if not, the overall.
34:55And Justin Cooper has two overall wins
34:57out of this track
34:58in the 250 division,
35:00and showing his speed on the 450 here
35:03as he runs third.
35:04Drop back to Hunter Lawrence in fourth.

35:07can feel like they had a shot
35:09at at least an individual moto win today,
35:12and Hunter was part of that group
35:14at the sharp end as well.
35:16Yeah, this is going to be a hard hit
35:18for all these guys outside of Jet Lawrence
35:20because, as you just mentioned,
35:21they all felt like they were right there.
35:23I mean, passing him,
35:24they were in front of him
35:25in his second moto,
35:26but somehow he's able to get around them,
35:28and he's, you know,
35:29you're 20 seconds down.
35:30You know, you're close
35:31to having this guy on the road,
35:33but somehow he still ends up.
35:34So, for me, there's certain types of races
35:37that you're there.
35:37You're like, okay, I was close.
35:39I fell or whatnot,
35:40and this guy's just better.
35:41But here, you really can't say that.
35:43You'd be like, no, we were there.
35:45We had this guy,
35:46and yet he ends up beating us
35:48about 20 seconds.
35:49Just for confidence-wise,
35:50it's going to be hard to continue
35:52to push forward after this one.
35:54So, after Hunter,
35:57you see the number seven,
35:58the cowboy here, Aaron Plessinger,
36:00one of the most popular riders out here.

36:04back in fifth here in Moto 2.

36:11He was so close to getting that moto win
36:14there in Moto 1.
36:16But, unfortunately, you look in Moto 2,
36:18he finds himself 30 seconds down.
36:20So, it's polishing the final product right now.
36:23It's putting two motos together
36:24that can get him not only that first moto win,
36:27but the overall.
36:27And you can see him laboring.

36:30battling for those moto wins
36:31is taken out of him.

36:36Yes, they did throw everything they had at Lawrence.
36:39This is an endurance sport, for sure.
36:40These are 30-minute races,
36:41but their heart rates are pinned
36:42180, 190 the whole time.
36:45Is there an element where
36:46Jets saving a little bit
36:48while they're attacking him
36:49and they're going all out?
36:51No, I think what this kid's doing,
36:53he's one of the smartest racers
36:54I've ever seen.
36:56You know, for him to be able to adapt
36:59and really play defense while playing offense,
37:02you know, he's putting those guys
37:03in a position to where he's taken away
37:06from what their best asset is.
37:08You know, if Eli has a line here,
37:11Jets in front of him,
37:11he shouldn't be able to see him,
37:12but he's able to cover that part up.
37:15And being a racer,
37:17Jets beating these guys by being smarter,
37:19to be honest with you.
37:20I mean, clearly he has talent,
37:21he has speed,
37:22but we saw how close Aaron Fletcher was.
37:24We saw how close Eli was,
37:26but Jets just outriding them
37:29and just outsmarting them.
37:31And that's really special
37:34to have that talent be as young as he is
37:37and to be able to outwit
37:38these veterans out here.
37:39And it's going to be hard
37:41for these guys to continue to move forward
37:42because they're just really getting beat
37:43by being a smarter racer.
37:45He knows how to do it,
37:46and I think he's one of the smartest racers
37:47I've ever seen.
37:49Wow, that's saying a lot.
37:50And he is just 21 years old
37:53and, again, only jumped onto the 450 in 2023
37:55and already looking to be tied for 10th all time
37:59in wins in this class.
38:03He's the only rider on the podium
38:04in every moto so far this year,
38:06and that's why he's beginning to build the point lead,
38:08even though they've been close in the races.
38:10At the end, he's been on top in all but one,
38:14and he is now on the final lap.
38:16Weather of the storm,
38:17four or five riders all took a shot.
38:20All looked like they had him covered,
38:22but he was clutch, under fire,
38:24and Chet Lawrence wins again.
