President Trump is asked if Germany is doing enough on defense during his meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Transcript
00:00Mr. President, what do you expect from Germany and what do you expect from the Chancellor?
00:06Well, first of all, I'm glad to meet because I've been dealing with the Chancellor and he's a very good man to deal with.
00:13He's difficult, I would say. Can I say that? It's a positive.
00:16Go ahead.
00:17You wouldn't want me to say you're easy, right?
00:20He's a very great representative of Germany.
00:22I think all we want is just going to have a good relationship.
00:26The rest will just sort of follow very easily.
00:29We'll have a good trade deal.
00:30I mean, I guess that will be mostly determined by the European Union, but you're a very big part of that.
00:36So you'll be involved.
00:38But we'll end up hopefully with a trade deal or we'll do something.
00:42You know, we'll do the tariffs.
00:44I mean, I'm okay with the tariffs or we make a deal with the trade.
00:47And I guess that's what we're discussing now.
00:49Mr. President, please.
00:53Mr. President, okay.
00:55Is Germany doing enough on defense, Mr. President?
00:59Is Germany doing enough on defense?
01:01What?
01:01Defense spending.
01:02Is Germany doing enough on defense?
01:04The Chancellor wants to spend 3.5.
01:09Well, I don't know.
01:09I mean, I haven't discussed it very much.
01:11I know that you're spending more money on defense now.
01:14And quite a bit more money.
01:17And that's a positive thing.
01:19I'm not sure the General MacArthur would have said it's positive.
01:23You know, he wouldn't like it, but I sort of think it's good.
01:27You understand what I mean?
01:28Absolutely, I understand.
01:29He made a statement, never let Germany re-arm.
01:33And I said, I always think about that when he says, sir, we're spending more money on defense.
01:37I say, ooh, is that a good thing or a bad thing?
01:39I think it's a good thing.
01:42But, you know, at least to a certain point.
01:44There'll be a point when I'll say, please don't arm anymore if you don't mind.
01:48We'll be watching him.
01:49I'll get it.
01:50Mr. President.
01:51Mr. President.
