Costco Tests Scan-And-Go Tech To Shorten Checkout Lines And Improve Member Experience

Costco is testing its version of scan-and-go checkout technology to address long checkout lines, one of the top concerns among members. CEO Ron Vachris said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that early results have shown strong adoption and faster transactions. The in-house system is part of a broader effort to improve the member experience. While all Costco locations still rely on traditional registers, some already include self-checkout lanes. Warehouse rivals like Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale have long offered mobile checkout options, allowing customers to scan and pay as they shop. Vachris said Costco is exploring new technology pilots to enhance the checkout process and overall member experience.
