00:00Oh
00:30wow this is picturesque india really has it all though it really does yeah you ready selfie
00:39is that better no i missed you which is good
00:44gear national park the only place outside of africa where lions still roam in the wild
00:52these big cats were hunted close to extinction before 1900 when the navab of junaga turned his
01:01hunting ground into india's first wildlife sanctuary
01:08and today it's home to a thriving population of lions once more oh look down there it's beautiful
01:16it's just an oasis of calm and it makes the stress of the race so worth it being on a safari
01:26it's amazing not thinking about the race just yeah having this experience together
01:32it's lovely just to drive around it's lovely isn't it really it is being in the trees to feel the wind
01:36in your hair how fast can lions run 60 60 kilometers and how fast can this go
01:46oh my gosh oh there's a there's a lion in a cup that is so magical that is so gorgeous
02:00that's incredible i didn't think we were going to see this at all lying down on a snooze in the middle
02:07of the road wow
02:09oh my god that was superb it was won't it mate it was great that that that is genuinely a serious
02:20that once in a lifetime i think excited it just surprised me yet again
02:25good morning sir good morning 5 25 a.m this is for you sir thank you thank you so much sir
02:44as brian and melvin were first to reach the checkpoint they're now first to leave
02:49all right we'll go and have a look in the penultimate leg just six and a half hours separate the brothers
02:58and last place the closest the race has been so far
03:04see where we're going hey ready
03:07your seventh checkpoint is panadji panadji panadji never heard of it
03:19it's here bloody hell mate well spotted oh it's on the coast that could be sea sand and beer
03:27almost 1500 kilometers south of sasangir
03:30panadji the capital of goa india's smallest state until 1961 it was under the yoke of portuguese
03:43colonial rule now it's palm fringed beaches are visited by both nesting turtles and millions of
03:50tourists each year the decision we've got to make is do we go back on ourselves using the same route
03:59or do we cut across the bay their first decision how to get off the kartyavar peninsula
04:09they could opt for a ferry but with only two crossings a day timing the connection is key
04:16or retrace their steps north on land before heading south to goa
04:20the ferry brings you all the way south it's going to save you 12 hours today once off the peninsula a
04:31choice skirt the concan coastline via the mega city of mumbai a more direct but popular route where demand
04:39for tickets is high
04:40or veer inland through the deccan traps one of the largest igneous areas of the world
04:50here they may avoid the crowds but could add mileage to their journey
04:55the mumbai is one of the busiest cities in in india beat beat blah blah smog smog you don't want to go to
05:02mumbai i'm not that bothered about it i would sooner go in the countryside yeah i'm well up for that
05:10right okay we've got a very early start which gives us a chance to get to the ferry port we need to get
05:16there as quickly as possible okay if we're going to win this race we've got to take a chance we could
05:23stretch a lead by taking the chance now thanks very much my thank you if we can get to that ferry port
05:30knowing that let's say there was only one ferry and another couple turns up as the ferry's pulling away
05:36thought you'd be cruel wouldn't it we're away
05:42okay let's go leaving the checkpoint two hours behind the leaders wow we're going down
05:48wow okay caroline and tom right what i really want to do is go the most direct route to checkpoint
05:57straight down i think mumbai might be a really good option um possibly a time to try a train
06:05yes i think we have to brave it it would be good for connections i know we're a bit threatened by
06:10bigger cities but this is leg seven it started off as a marathon in china
06:15and we're basically now on the sprint so i think this is really important that we face our fears so rather
06:22than being worried by mumbai and avoiding it we're actually going to try and use it
06:27that's the best connection for our race i'm feeling weirdly excited about this leg i've no idea what
06:33mumbai has in store for us but i'm keeping my mind open right what are we doing to try hitch
06:43hi could you take us into the bus station please
06:45we've already relinquished our first place and that doesn't feel good
06:51we really want to battle to get that back so we will have to really dig deep
06:58this is a good start great start
07:00where do we buy tickets from come come come ticket tickets thank you thank you
07:12already at the ferry port current race leaders brian and melvin
07:17well at least we made it well i'll let you know when i've got a chicken in my hand right
07:20yeah we don't know how much it is so whatever it is this is the gamble we're taking
07:31hello hello can we please have two tickets to get over the water just a rat
07:37two class available eight five zero business class one ticket price second class slipper class nine
07:43double zero okay we'll take business then is that what's business yeah it's 8 50. business is
07:488 50. what's the cheapest 8 50. so 8 5 0 is the cheapest well figured out melvin when we were
08:01younger used to beat me up that's the fact i honestly do not remember you did you used to get
08:07me in headlocks well it's always worth tripling what about the second class the agency's just said
08:14two classes available business or sleeping you're not listening you reckon i need me here syringing
08:21but nowadays we have had different opinions occasionally um we both sport the same football
08:26team yeah but uh i don't think we're the bickering type i think we might have achieved our aim today
08:32i think we're in front on the first night how long would it take you do you think to get on the bus to
08:38go from where we were to surat by road how long that or rail at least two days two days so in theory
08:47we could have sneaked today it is possible other teams can make it here and capture this ferry
08:54well nobody else here it's early days melv i know it is so let's not count our chickens
08:59i don't think many will actually not do what we're doing
09:06arnold's so keen on the ferry next to depart hello can we go to bus stop bus stop bus stop yeah elizabeth
09:16and letitia let's do this we're only a couple of hours behind like anything could happen yeah i think
09:23the more i'm getting closer to the finale the more competitive i'm getting cello cello go go go go
09:30thank you thank you thank you thank you maybe we can get a train train to mumbai to go straight down
09:39yeah sticking to roads and rail the sisters plan to head north off the peninsula before picking up
09:47speed along the coast i feel like there's more pressure when everyone's so close like there's no
09:52room for mistakes there's no room for taking on transportation there's no room for error
09:59right i want to do what we did last leg but faster ready to start chasing down their competitors
10:05let's go finn and seanet brian and melvin are first but only six hours ahead of us
10:11considering we just caught up about 26 hours that's easily doable it's all to play for and it shows that
10:18as possible with what we've just done so for the next leg and the last leg first first
10:28all along the coast to mumbai i think it's probably the fastest option hoping to replicate
10:33their successful strategy of back-to-back transport the couple plan to make for vedodara before the day is
10:40out go try hitchhike okay three three no no we know we need to be communicating with locals more
10:53i feel like i'm growing in confidence for the next two legs we need to ask a lot more questions to get a
10:59lot of people's help without asking questions we definitely wouldn't have got as far please stop
11:05please stop yay oh my god to the bus station oh wow yay thank you very much thank you
11:14that worked well though that was unbelievable we should be proud of ourselves for that
11:22hello we're trying to get to the bawnaga yeah bus bus two tickets perfect thank you sir
11:32bus hopping their way along the coast towards bhavnagar caroline and tom have made it to diu
11:3998 kilometers southeast of sassangir
11:44linked to gujarat's southern coast by a bridge it's home to a 16th century fort standing watch over the
11:51arabian sea i like things like this obviously obviously restoring yeah it's lovely though thomas
12:00should we pop a squat yeah yeah proper squat the further we get the closer we're getting towards
12:07the finish line now i think we should try and just work on helping each other as much as we can
12:12because it's only going to get more stressful it was easier to start with because i felt i had a more
12:18maternal role so i was helping you and now i don't know if i'm frightened making the wrong decision
12:22last leg that was one point where i was kind of left to make a big decision and then you didn't
12:27help me as much as i would have liked you're a very confident person but but when it comes to making
12:33a decision i feel like you're kind of holding yourself back a little bit but thomas you must be
12:38aware at home i'm not used to making decisions the last 20 years i haven't had to make them i think you're
12:44worried that when you go home it's going to slip back into normal life yeah i have been perhaps
12:51getting a little bit stuck in a rut i'd like that to change i want you to back yourself a bit more
12:58you're still my amazing mum
13:03i'd really love to know that i am capable of doing whatever i choose to do in the future we're going
13:09to goa beach because i was quite capable before and i'd like to feel i am capable again
13:15just feels really tropical already it does wow oh my golly look at this it's incredible isn't it and we
13:23were in jungle only two hours away oh my god it's beautiful it is lovely you inevitably sacrifice so
13:30much to be a parent you willingly do it but it often takes a toll on you and i think that contributes
13:36to making you a little bit old and possibly in my case boring Thomas oh no way yes way no no no he's
13:47going up i don't know how many summers i've got left it would be shame not to live life to the
13:52fall wow that looks so fun do you think you'd ever do that god yes definitely yes maybe i don't
14:01have to do what others think might be expected of me tell us we've got to be at the bus station
14:14they let us off first which is good yeah i'm gonna feel like any minute i'm gonna get run over
14:18my motorbike after catching the last ferry of the day brian and melvin are the only team to have
14:26made it off the peninsula my gut feeling is that we're still ahead at the moment we didn't see
14:33anybody else on the ferry and we've got to capitalize on that job done yes 470 kilometers north
14:43finn and shawned are trading sleep for speed on an overnight bus to vedodara
14:53we're in lars but we can't complain it was about 2.50 each for the tickets yeah there's so much going on
15:03oh it feels like i'm in a horror film i'm so tired
15:18i don't think it's worth going to the ferry plotting their route and we already have a solution staring
15:23us in the face barring disaster we get there tomorrow morning we're exactly where we want to be let's do
15:28it caroline and tom have found a 15-hour bus we're going to be in mumbai tonight that is bloody good
15:35i think that will take them all the way to mumbai at last we're on the go on the move on the way to mumbai
15:46let's go to the bus station last to secure transport off the peninsula
15:50can you say straight maybe we can ask along the way yeah elizabeth and leticia are determined to
15:58reach palgar a town 87 kilometers north of mumbai
16:05hello is there direct please to palgar direct okay surat and then palgar
16:13how long time 10 hours 10 hours 10 hours well we know there's a bus to surat in 15 minutes but
16:26that would require us changing again yeah so it's not really ideal
16:33should we just go to a train station okay maybe that's a direct train yeah you have a good feeling
16:40leticia with the gut instinct yeah i feel like that chat the last leg definitely um
16:46benefited us and yeah i feel like we are more comfortable around each other we are communicating
16:51better we are um yeah cooperating yeah it's working out for us yeah ready let's go searching for a
16:59better option leticia's hunch take a gamble on the trains hello we want to go to howard gut
17:09i think 45 that's good okay yes we want to get that ticket i definitely think that leticia has
17:18changed from the younger sister that i remember when we were growing up well this is smooth
17:27i feel like you've definitely got a knack for it she is more determined than i thought and maybe even
17:34more determined than she thought as well now she can't even go back on herself she can't say that
17:39she can't do things because it's very very clear that she can do a lot i was so confident in that
17:45so it's a good decision okay that's good your confidence gave me conscience
17:53i think it worked really well yeah if it's first leg we would have jumped on that bus i thought yeah
17:57i think i still would have jumped on the bus if it wasn't for you so yeah yeah feeling happy
18:06we have booked onward travel so we're on the move
18:17plan of attack is to get to nashik the wine capital of india i'll leave the wine to brian i think on
18:23this quite happy with that you've got your parasita keen to swerve mumbai brian and melvin are the
18:30only team heading inland to a region known for its 175 000 acres of vineyards
18:38maybe england is popular for their football yeah uh we support derby county in india
18:44only know manchester city and manchester yeah that's the trouble you see they need to learn about a
18:49proper football club hey so you guys are visiting india yeah so we're going down to
18:56there panji go on the way you're going to um valoon vineyard yeah when you reach nashik uh there are
19:06local buses we've got the whole bus involved hey everybody's helping these guys are going near
19:17eager to replace they will help you thank you there's a plan the plan is formulating right
19:23brilliant that's very helpful without people like you we we get lost you're brilliant thank you
19:30nice to meet you thank you i'll see you soon happy journey for you thank you thank you
19:37we're getting close i can smell the wine quite a way actually isn't it yeah it was a five hour bus
19:44trip it's eight hours all together long day uh it is what it is bro we'll get there today but it's not
19:52that bad really is it could be snowing
19:55340 kilometers to the north the gujarati city of vadodara
20:14this means across india on myriad street corners chai valas serve up steaming cups of sweet
20:23spiced tea from the roadside stalls vishnu has been serving his local community for over 30 years
20:32wow that's a lot of sugar hello chai and for finn and sean ed with the lowest remaining
20:39budget of any team it's an opportunity to earn some rupees
20:43that's good there we go oh joy okay when i see three chai okay
20:54how long are you guys in india about four weeks all together is this yours yes yes there you go thank
21:00you um so yeah now we're working our way to mumbai now nice yeah after mumbai uh after mumbai we're
21:05going to pan gym down south shirad's got on i think better than me she's got stuck in thank you thank
21:13you i already see that she is gaining confidence one i see three chai 18 rupees well it was hard for
21:20the start and i do think slowly she's overcome a lot of challenges good poor natural there we go thank you
21:30there we go to try i've been chatting away to some customers and yeah it's been nice okay
21:44this race is off the scale something to be proud of
21:48it's nice to say i am proud of something because normally it's just i'm proud to be welsh
21:54finished finish finish yay hello hello how's your experience in india yeah it's really good so far
22:03we're going to goa that's a good game is it nice i haven't been there you haven't it's a dream for
22:09all india really oh wow yeah do you know if this train's from mumbai to goa yeah it's a there's a
22:16direct train direct yeah it's always for your book you have to rebook like a couple of months ahead
22:24one of the reason i cancelled my plan for goa was that i didn't got any reservation in
22:28oh okay that's made me nervous now months months in advance bye bishnu
22:41i've got a bit of nerves about getting out of mumbai because of what the woman at the chai shop said
22:50i mean on this stage in the race it's really hard to make decision because you really cannot go wrong
22:56only 50 rubies 50 rubies perfect any holdups can cost us a lot
23:05while finn and seanet consider their options
23:10so you go up with the ladder just 60 kilometers to the north
23:15uh it actually wasn't nice being at the top of here you could see everything
23:19elizabeth and letitia are trying something new
23:22it's our first super train on this race today where it's gone really really well actually
23:32i'm really learning from the dishes i think the dishes got
23:37it's magic instinct
23:40your feet hanging out a little bit oh i don't think i like that like just people walking past
23:45they're going to get a lovely stench
23:50i feel it's actually more comfortable with some of the beds
23:56well i don't know what we let ourselves in for
23:58i don't know neither do i no you don't after more than 10 hours on the road it does seem
24:04a bit of light out doesn't it completely off the beaten track i'm thinking how we're going to get
24:08away from here tomorrow brian and melvin have finally arrived at their destination
24:14oh yeah hi the valine vineyards in igart puri on the outskirts of nashik
24:22we've made good progress today but it's been a very long day very tiring day
24:28this is your home sir please all right
24:32we've got a room with two beds no we don't have any i can uh give you some mattress uh
24:37uh the site and yeah can we have another mattress yeah no problem i'll do that we've paid four and
24:44a half thousand rupees for the room here it's the most expensive room that we've had in the whole
24:49of india do you get many people stay here the one single rooms we are taking only for the marriage
25:00well i'm gonna put the kettle on i'm gonna have a cup of tea
25:07all right let's roll the first team to set foot in mumbai are you ready let's go caroline and tom
25:20are looking for a way out have you seen anything like it this is really quite something
25:27once an archipelago mumbai was initially composed of seven islands that were joined together under the
25:40watch of the east india company in the 19th century today home to 21 million people it's known as the city
25:50of dreams is it possible to book tickets here please i want to go to panji as close as possible one way two
26:00people please not this it not here you can't do it here oh no sorry okay he's just told me to wait
26:11hello so do you speak english oh thank you hello so do you speak english trying to go to panji okay i
26:23don't think you get the ticket over here from this is only for local train you can go to church gate
26:28from church gate you book our ticket lovely okay thank you so much you're welcome thank mom i found the
26:34answer you can only go within the state at this station because this is a local train station
26:41okay well done but the train is not very fun but we are going to conquer it
26:47right platform five yeah oh it's quite a busy train station oh my god
26:56the pair must master a train network that carries over seven and a half million commuters every day
27:028 8.24 whoo glad you're feeling it church gate
27:12oh oh for god's sake let's move down move down where i don't like this oh my god
27:19Oh, man, so I can't scramble with this lot. I'm by home. Oh
27:26Well, okay, let's go. Yes. Yes. Whoa. Come on Thomas. Okay. Okay. Yeah
27:34Hey good first train. Whoo. We're on the move
27:40This experience is just making me feel so alive
27:49I've never done this in my life
28:02I think that was the best overnight bus to be on thank you
28:08150 kilometers southeast
28:11After changing tack to avoid Mumbai Finn and Shonard have arrived in the city of Pune
28:16I don't feel like it was a good decision to make changing from Mumbai to Pune
28:23Especially after what we heard from other people in back in Vatidara. So I think I feel better about this decision
28:30Yeah, I'm just hoping that this this route is definitely benefit in our race and is a little bit quicker than Mumbai would have been
28:37Eager to keep moving. Hello. Hello. Do you go to Panjim? They're searching for a direct bus to the checkpoint
28:467.30 p.m. tomorrow. Oh
28:50That's not good. Is there anything earlier before?
28:54Nothing before 7.30 p.m.
28:58Okay, okay. Thank you
29:01Must be something
29:03Do you go to Goa Panjim only night tomorrow everyone
29:10Do trains go in the day?
29:12No trains school. I know full
29:15Maybe we should have gone to Mumbai then
29:19The earliest we could get directly to Panjim from here is tomorrow night, so
29:25We're gonna have to find another option
29:29We're here
29:31We could go to Kholapur, which is like midway
29:35If we get in there, we can take a taxi from there
29:42Is that a ticket place? I think so
29:45I think I've adapted and I'm actually
29:49Getting used to how things work around here and how busy places are
29:55This one
29:57Around there. Thank you. I mean, it's not gonna change for me, so it's either get used to it or go home
30:03So it's heads down and do the best we can
30:05What time is to Kholapur tomorrow?
30:0712.30 p.m.
30:0912.30 p.m.
30:10Oh, yay, that's good
30:11What time does it get to Kholapur?
30:135 o'clock
30:15Can we book two tickets?
30:17Thank you
30:19Great loads of great loads of grapes isn't there in return for discounted accommodation and a chance to sample the produce
30:46So that needs to be up there like that
30:50Brian and Melvin are training vines
30:54Whoa, that's good
30:57We will train our wines
30:58So when sun goes from east to west, the bunches are constantly exposed to the sunlight
31:03Right
31:04At an altitude of 2,000 feet
31:07India's wine capital Nashik is framed by the
31:11150 million year old Western Ghats
31:14A mountain range older than the Himalayas
31:21So we generally give our vineyard boys the target
31:23Right
31:24So for you
31:25Four rows
31:26Four rows
31:27That's fine
31:28Four rows
31:29Okay
31:30I'm certainly a gold, gold-given man
31:33I will smash my target
31:35And normally I'd say I would go on to surpass it but maybe not on this one occasion
31:46Brian doesn't like to come second
31:48He beat me at rummicum and he's in your face with it, you know, and I like that about him
31:53Do you know we've done about six now, don't you?
31:55Melvin, I've done eight on me own
31:59His determination and will to succeed
32:02I think it's made him extremely successful
32:06Oh shit
32:08Well they're tucking in, don't they?
32:10If Bri comes along like a bully in a china shop and knocks it out again
32:13Well I'm sorry, mate
32:16Melvin's a grafter
32:18He's ambitious
32:20He's driven
32:22He has had a lot of jobs
32:23But he's done very well at them
32:26He's been keen
32:27He's got promotions and he's moved on
32:30Yeah, I'm proud of him
32:32And maybe I should tell him
32:35I think we're doing our over quota
32:37Well you're just enjoying it Mel
32:41The best way to learn more about wines is to taste them
32:45And you mean taste not drink
32:47Moderation is
32:48It's good
32:49Yeah
32:50Yeah, drinking in moderation is good
32:51Thank you
32:52Yeah
32:57Cheers mate
32:58Well done
32:59Cheers
33:02Oh, that is marvellous
33:04Look at the view
33:06It's nice, isn't it?
33:07We've got a leg and a half to go
33:12And I know we're always conscious of the next leg
33:15And it's nice to not think about it for an hour, isn't it?
33:20Yeah, when we come to places like this and we think
33:23Well we're going to do a little bit of work
33:24And then you think, well, we can actually chill for a few hours
33:26It's nice
33:28This race has pulled something out of us, I think
33:34I think it has brought us together
33:37I think the last few weeks we've found it'll be more similar than we think
33:41Yeah, similar traits
33:43We are sharing things more now
33:45We're not just Brian on his own or Melvin on his own
33:47It's Brian and Melvin
33:48Yeah
33:49And as long as we remember that, that we are there for each other
33:53Yeah, which we will
33:55Which we will
33:56We might piss each other off from time to time
33:58But the fact is, we're brothers
33:59Yeah
34:02I think it's a brilliant change in our relationship
34:05Before the race
34:06I can't imagine Brian and I do it
34:09Talking the way we've spoken over the last six, seven weeks
34:13Our relationship will only get better now
34:15Once this race is finished, we'll speak to each other more
34:19Doing something together
34:20Whether it's if we hired a villa somewhere or other
34:23I'd bring all the kids over
34:24And then you'd come over for a few days or whatever you want
34:29It'd be brilliant
34:31I'm not a bigger lovey-dovey bloke
34:34But yeah, yeah, I love him really
34:37I wouldn't tell him that to his face
34:39I don't mind that, I've got to be honest
34:41Cheese is good
34:42I don't think I'd ever say to Brian I love him
34:46Even though I'm sure he knows I do
34:51I am absolutely delighted to have done this adventure
34:56With you
35:00I couldn't think of anybody else I'd rather do it with
35:02No, we've done okay, Mel
35:03Yeah
35:05We need to shift mate because we're back in the races from now
35:09So let's go
35:11I should bugger off
35:13Oh dear
35:15Fucking hell
35:17Passenger reservation office, first floor
35:20Still in Mumbai
35:22With the correct station located
35:24Hello
35:26We'd like to get two tickets to Panji
35:28Caroline and Tom now face the trickier task of getting hold of tickets
35:33There's a train by 50 in the morning from CSP
35:36It reaches MacGal by 3 o'clock
35:38Oh
35:40That's pretty good
35:41Two of us, please
35:43Let's check, but tickets are not available for tomorrow morning
35:45You can get your tickets in wedding list
35:47Okay, okay, wait, so
35:48Now you have to put your tickets and then tomorrow morning go to the station one hour before the train departs
36:05You have to check whether they have got confirmed or not
36:08And then according to how to travel
36:10The ticket isn't guaranteed
36:12Yeah, it's not guaranteed
36:15It's a bit risky
36:16Yeah, but if we wait, it'll be another day
36:19I think we have to do that
36:21Okay
36:22Let's put the tickets
36:24Obviously being on the waiting list is a worry
36:27We asked about trains later on in the day and they are fully booked
36:31I'm really hoping it just goes our way and we turn up tomorrow and they say yes, you've got seats
36:36That would be amazing
36:38So we just had to take the gamble and we'll have to wait and see
36:40Taking the risk on the 5.50 a.m. train tomorrow towards Panaji
36:47Let's go, come on, let's go
36:49Leave the pair free to indulge in some sightseeing
36:52Mum, look at that building
36:54I know, be useful, isn't it?
36:55Looks like it's got trees going inside of us
36:58In one of the city's most eclectic neighbourhoods, Bandra
37:03Where modern high-rises sit side by side with crumbling Indo-Portuguese bungalows
37:09Everything is so individual and different and colourful
37:12And graffitied streets are lined with Catholic shrines and grottos
37:19What are these?
37:22It's like the street food
37:24These are like walls with spicy and green water
37:28Are they nice?
37:29Really nice
37:31You should eat them, yeah
37:33Can you try some?
37:34Is it really spicy?
37:35It's medium spicy, what do you need to do?
37:37You can try
37:38It's a bit spicy
37:41It's a bit spicy
37:44Oh my god
37:46Now on the race
37:48I think I've seen mum more carefree
37:51She's really confident
37:54Excuse me
37:56Could I taste the sugar cane, please?
38:03Oh my god
38:04Is that nice?
38:05It is like a milkshake
38:06Is it?
38:09Oh that is so yum
38:13It's not quite a coffee
38:15It's lovely isn't it?
38:17I have to admit I really like Mumbai
38:20Oh thank you very much
38:23Oh at last
38:24It's just been the best day
38:25This race has given me newfound confidence that there are things I can do
38:38I would like to make some changes when I get home
38:39I've always felt a great sense of guilt if I wanted to do something for myself or perhaps not that the family first which most parents do completely understandably but now I feel if I want to do something I can find something that I absolutely love and follow it through
38:56Right
38:57Right
38:58Right
38:59Should we get going?
39:00I think we should get to bed because we've got an early start tomorrow
39:02Tomorrow is going to be a stressful day
39:03It's just the worry of not knowing for certain that we're going to get on that train and that we're going to make it to checkpoint tomorrow
39:0812 hours from now the train leaves actually
39:09Right
39:10Right
39:11While Caroline and Tom wait to learn whether they've secured tickets
39:12Yeah, bro
39:13Brian and Melvin are competing with local travelers
39:14Yeah, bro
39:15Brian and Melvin are competing with local travelers
39:16It's going to be a stressful day
39:17It's just the worry of not knowing for certain that we're going to get on that train and that we're going to make it to checkpoint tomorrow
39:2012 hours from now the train leaves actually
39:21Right
39:22While Caroline and Tom wait to learn whether they've secured tickets
39:36Yeah, bro
39:37Brian and Melvin are competing with local travelers
39:42It looks really horrible for those who have bloody heard on them
39:49It's actually milking time, innit, the bloody daring
39:53Whilst 100 kilometers west Elizabeth and Letitia have made it to the outskirts of Palgar
40:04Hello
40:05Hello
40:06To work at a retreat run by the Chabrah family
40:10So lovely to have you!
40:12They will prepare the evening meal for guests
40:15under the guidance of daughter Ayanna.
40:21OK, thank you.
40:23Oh, it's so cute, like, cooking outdoors.
40:26Yeah, it's really fun. Yeah!
40:29In return, discounted accommodation and a massage.
40:34I love the architecture here, like, it's all open,
40:38but, you know, you have some shelter.
40:41It feels like you're in the jungle.
40:43Yeah, that's what we wanted.
40:45Yeah, very relaxing.
40:47Yeah, it's mostly for people to come from the city and relax
40:50because, like, it's very chaotic there.
40:53Yeah.
40:55And do you normally cook?
40:57Yeah, I love cooking.
40:58I started cooking when I was four years old.
41:00Wow! How old are you?
41:02I'm 15.
41:03Fifteen! You're so cute!
41:05So you've grown up here.
41:08Yeah.
41:09It's nice, it's peaceful, quiet.
41:11You know, I love the idea of retreats.
41:15Yeah.
41:16I've been to a few retreats.
41:17Yeah.
41:18And I would like to have my own retreat as well.
41:21Yeah, I like that.
41:22Mm-mm.
41:23I've travelled a lot.
41:26I've lived abroad.
41:27I've come back to my hometown.
41:31And I've just been a bit stagnant, really.
41:33I've been a bit, you know, deciding what I'm going to do with my life,
41:37et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
41:39I started getting into going to retreats.
41:42And it's definitely helped with understanding myself a little bit more,
41:47being more confident in what I want to do.
41:50And actually, I would like to provide it for other people
41:53because I know how beneficial it's been for me.
41:56I'm just excited for what the future will hold.
42:00I'm just excited for this.
42:01Yes.
42:02Yes.
42:03Yes.
42:04Oh, OK.
42:05OK.
42:06Are you comfortable?
42:07Yes.
42:08Oh, OK.
42:09OK.
42:10Are you comfortable?
42:11Yes.
42:12Oh, OK.
42:13I'm not.
42:14OK.
42:15Nothing.
42:16Sorry.
42:17Sorry.
42:18I'm relaxing.
42:19No.
42:20Relax.
42:21I'm not.
42:22I'm not.
42:23I'm not.
42:24OK, OK.
42:25Sorry, I'm relaxing.
42:26No.
42:27Relax.
42:28I'm very comfortable.
42:30I guess seeing my sister envision her dream about starting a retreat,
42:35it does make me think, oh, what should I do, you know?
42:38Which I feel like I'm still trying to figure out for myself.
42:47Before the race, I think I definitely had a cycle of starting things,
42:52not finishing things, and just being upset about that.
42:58Like university, I mean, I lasted until, you know, the last year.
43:02And then I was like, actually, no, I don't want to do it.
43:05I couldn't stay in a job, really, so long.
43:10I just had the fear of failure.
43:12Scared of just putting myself out there.
43:15Such a weird sensation.
43:17I don't know what to do with myself.
43:19I'll embrace it.
43:21I'll embrace it.
43:22I'll embrace it.
43:25Being in a race, there's so many things you can fail at.
43:29Small things like communicating with people, getting rejected,
43:32that's like a sense of failing.
43:34And that was happening on the daily.
43:37You just have to become comfortable with failure.
43:41Really?
43:42Oh, thank you.
43:43It's toughened me up.
43:46I would like to have that feeling.
43:50Just completing something that I've worked hard on
43:54and, um, I've tried my best on.
43:59Oh, this is lovely.
44:03It's so...
44:05It's well-being.
44:07You can just feel, isn't it?
44:09Yeah, I definitely wish we were here for longer.
44:18Right.
44:19Let's go.
44:20200 kilometres south-east, on the outskirts of Pune.
44:27This place is absolutely beautiful.
44:28This looks really nice.
44:29Finn and Sean Ed are embracing the great outdoors.
44:33Oh, wow, look at that.
44:34Everyone's chilling, having a good time.
44:36It's cute.
44:37Good vibes.
44:38At Pauna Lake,
44:40a popular campsite destination for locals
44:43seeking a weekend getaway
44:45from the cities of Pune and Mumbai.
44:48I love being here with you.
44:49Yeah.
44:50I mean, we're together, a lot at home anyway,
44:52but we've not had a breather from each other.
44:55No, and somehow still kicking, yeah.
44:57I know.
44:59Do you think, after the finish line,
45:00do you think you could carry on?
45:01I don't think I'd want to go on for longer.
45:03Really?
45:04I think I'd want to go home for a little bit,
45:06see everyone,
45:07but then I do think I'll have that itch again to go travelling, so...
45:12I honestly think, give me three days at the finish line,
45:15I'll go again.
45:16It just makes...
45:17It just inspires me to, I want to do more things.
45:20I do just want to see more of the world.
45:22Yeah.
45:23Do all the fun things first.
45:25Then all the serious stuff.
45:28We are still young.
45:31Before coming on the race, all I was thinking was the house,
45:35the family, marriage, all of that stuff.
45:39The race has made me realise there's so much more that I'm able to do,
45:44that I'm able to see.
45:47I'm only 19, I've got the rest of my life to settle down.
45:56Oh, my!
45:57Just the kind of vibe going on here.
46:02Do you know the words?
46:04It's between us
46:08You have come to show you
46:13Go on
46:16You could switch with it.
46:17Near, far, wherever you are
46:33Oh!
46:35We've got fire with it!
46:37This is so cute!
46:41Oh, fuck!
46:43Oh, shit!
46:44Surely!
46:45I don't think that was meant to happen.
46:49Good night, Sean, I love you.
46:50Good night, I love you.
46:52I was quite cosy in here.
46:56Need to pee.
47:05Mumbai, 5am.
47:07Good morning.
47:08Check out, please.
47:10Thank you very much.
47:12Yeah, I'm feeling really quite nervous just because there's still a chance that we're not going to make the train and then we're back to square one, so...
47:23All I need to do is find out that we've come off the reservation list and we have reserve tickets, which is what we're going to find out in the next five minutes, I think.
47:31So it's...
47:33Oh, it affects our whole day.
47:36Why do we do this to ourselves?
47:39This is awful.
47:42With all other trains sold out, it's their only chance to escape Mumbai today.
47:48Passenger assistance!
47:49Hello, sir.
47:51Hello.
47:52We need to get confirmed seats.
47:57Oh, he's typing something.
47:59OK, we're at the right place.
48:06Oh, he's writing something.
48:08Oh, my God.
48:10Ask him.
48:11Sorry, so...
48:12Do we...
48:13Do we have seats?
48:14Do we...
48:15Do we have seats?
48:16Do we have seats?
48:17Do we have seats?
48:18Do we have seats?
48:19We have seats?
48:21Oh, my God.
48:22Yes.
48:24Oh, my God.
48:26So, it's...
48:27Coach number six, 38-39.
48:28That's fine.
48:30Yes!
48:31It was all worth it.
48:32Look at that.
48:34I am absolutely over the move.
48:36All the worry of yesterday, despite really enjoying my day.
48:39This was at the back of my mind.
48:41It just makes it all worthwhile that we might be getting there.
48:44So exciting.
48:47Seven?
48:48Platform seven?
48:49Platform seven.
48:50Just 22 kilometres north-east of Mumbai...
48:53That's one that's just arriving.
48:56Elizabeth and Letitia are also taking advantage of the Indian rail network.
49:00Come in, come in, come in, come in, come in.
49:04Lovely.
49:06We're getting close to Checkpoint.
49:09And we get there today.
49:10We get there today.
49:11And you had a vision of getting there today.
49:13Yeah.
49:14I'm happy we're getting there today.
49:17We are planning to buy some tickets.
49:23Where are you planning to go right now?
49:25Panji, tonight.
49:27Lining up their last transfer to Checkpoint, Brian and Melvin.
49:32Our office is closed today because of Sunday.
49:34Oh, no.
49:35But you can wait at the hotel.
49:36I'll send my representative in 45 minutes maximum.
49:40OK, we'll wait here then for 45 minutes.
49:42Yeah, sure.
49:43That is brilliant.
49:44I'm actually quite confident that because we caught that ferry on the first day,
49:49if you had to go back up and back down again, that's a 12-hour trip.
49:53That took us four hours.
49:55So, in theory, that gives you an eight-hour lead.
49:59Do you guys speak English?
50:01Do you know how much a taxi would be from Kolapur to Panjim?
50:05Leaning on locals for a little help.
50:08We need to go to tomorrow.
50:10Today, after this bus.
50:12Finn and Sean Ed.
50:14We're just wondering, like, how much a taxi would be
50:16and how do we get a taxi.
50:18If you want, I can check with how much it is.
50:20Oh, that would be really good if you could.
50:22Yeah, thank you so much.
50:24I mean, if we can get it sorted for us, I mean...
50:28Maybe half it.
50:30He is asking 6,000, including total.
50:35OK, 60,000.
50:366,000, yes.
50:37Is that good to be asking?
50:38Yeah. OK, so he'll be waiting for us.
50:40I will get into taxi and go to Kewa.
50:42Perfect. That's amazing.
50:43Thank you very much.
50:44No problem.
50:45Oh, wow.
50:46Oh, that's good.
50:47What a lovely guy.
50:48See, asking gets you far.
50:51A very kind man has just actually really helped us out.
50:54It does really prove that just having that little bit of extra confidence
50:58to just speak to people, can work wonders, really.
51:03My wife prepared a special dish.
51:08You try.
51:09All of you try.
51:10Oh.
51:11Oh, it's still hot.
51:13Mmm.
51:14That's really good.
51:16Ooh, spicy.
51:18We've learned along the way.
51:19People in India are very hospitable and very giving
51:23and just want to help all the time.
51:26Well, it's really good.
51:27It's very spicy, but it's really good.
51:28That's very good.
51:29Your wife makes absolutely lovely food.
51:32Very nice.
51:34You could say that we've learned it too late,
51:36but I think we've learned it just in time, really,
51:38because we're taking it into that last final lag.
51:40Eric, Eric.
51:41No, it's yours.
51:42It's your food.
51:43No, no, no.
51:44I help you need.
51:45I want it.
51:46Are you sure?
51:47Thank you so much.
51:49Aw, he's so sweet.
51:50So, yeah, we're very happy.
51:53Transport to Checkpoint is just all organized now.
51:56So, yeah.
51:58I do like the biryani.
52:00So good.
52:01You ready?
52:02Yep.
52:03Go.
52:04After an 11-hour bus...
52:05It's humid, isn't it?
52:06Sticky.
52:07Brian and Melvin have arrived in Panagyi.
52:14On the banks of the Mondovi River,
52:29Goa's regional capital is a jumble of colourful streets.
52:35Towered over by the sparkling Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.
52:43Along the coast, Bamberlin Bay and the seventh checkpoint in the race.
52:49On foot, head through the colourful street and turn right after the temple
53:00and find the Panjim's People's Gallery.
53:03Colourful street?
53:05This is a colourful street, isn't it?
53:07Keep coming, Mel.
53:08That's the temple, isn't it?
53:11Right, is it left or is it right?
53:13Would they, wouldn't they? Choice of three.
53:16Which one would you normally pick?
53:17Well, there's more people down here.
53:18Well, you'd go that way, I'd go that way, so let's go that way.
53:21Nah, this way.
53:23Trust me.
53:25Here you go, Panjim's People's Gallery.
53:28You were right for the first time ever.
53:31Head through the village, up the Incline Street,
53:34to reach the Immaculate Conception Church.
53:37Incline?
53:40I'm just starting to sweat a bit.
53:42What was the name of the church?
53:44The Immaculate Conception.
53:45Excuse me, do you know where the Immaculate Conception Church is?
53:50Is that it?
53:51Could be, it's good.
53:52I'm all down there.
53:52I just asked this chap.
53:54That's it.
53:56Yeah.
53:57By Tuk Tuk or Taxi, travel to the Checkpoint Hotel,
54:00the Grand Hyatt,
54:01and check in at reception on the first floor.
54:04Tuk Tuk, yeah?
54:05We're going to the Grand Hyatt?
54:06Yeah.
54:07How much, mate?
54:08Five, yeah.
54:09Good lad.
54:10Go, go, go, go, go.
54:13Are we going to be first?
54:15Are we going to be second?
54:16Are we going to be third or what?
54:17I don't know.
54:17I don't see what we could have done any better on the leg.
54:20No.
54:21But who knows?
54:22We both know that if we could get a bit of a lead on this leg,
54:26we've got a chance for the final leg.
54:28Yeah, we've got a bit of a chance, haven't we?
54:30There you go, Mel.
54:31Oh, here we are.
54:32Excellent.
54:33Thank you so much.
54:34Thank you, mate.
54:35Wow, this looks a bit special, doesn't it?
54:38Lovely view.
54:39It is lovely, isn't it?
54:42Here you go, Mel.
54:44It's here.
54:45It's here.
54:45Ah, we...
54:46Hello, mate.
54:49Good morning.
54:50Good morning.
54:51How are you?
54:51Welcome to Grand Hyatt, girl.
54:53Please sign in, Ovalif.
54:56Congratulations.
54:57You have successfully reached your seventh checkpoint.
54:59Please sign in, Ovalif.
55:01You ready?
55:01Yeah.
55:05I don't know how we've done that.
55:09Oh, bollocks.
55:16This place is incredible.
55:18Reception.
55:21Come to the left.
55:22Go to the left.
55:23Oh, don't tell us.
55:23Come on, keep going.
55:24Nearly there.
55:25Oh, here it is.
55:26See it again.
55:27Yes.
55:28Oh, we're here.
55:29Yes.
55:30Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
55:31Hello.
55:32Hi.
55:32Okay.
55:33Okay.
55:33You ready?
55:34Yeah.
55:35Oh, my God.
55:37Oh, no.
55:39Oh, no.
55:40Oh, thank you.
55:43I can't believe we are first.
55:45It's the most incredible feeling.
55:48Three's a charm.
55:49And I think if we can win on the final leg, win three times, it would just be fantastic.
55:55Oh.
55:55It would have been nice to come first, but, you know, maybe that's for the last leg.
56:06Oh, okay.
56:09It's fine.
56:10Because we're all still very close together.
56:13It's not like we've fallen behind again.
56:17Yeah?
56:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
56:18No, we should be very happy with that.
56:19At least we're not 31 hours behind again.
56:21I know.
56:21And we're not fourth anymore.
56:22Exactly.
56:22Okay.
56:23After nearly 13,000 kilometres, only eight hours separates the top three teams going into
56:31the final leg.
56:32For Brian and Melvin, a 17-hour gap to close.
56:36We didn't expect it before, I've got to be honest.
56:43The only people that we can blame is us.
56:45Yeah.
56:46So we've cocked it up.
56:49Mumbai would have had an infrastructure of transport linked, and what we did is that we
56:54avoided that.
56:54So we've avoided all of those fast transport routes.
56:58It's all in last leg, isn't it?
56:59Yeah.
57:00We've moved from fourth to first before, and we'll do it again.
57:05It is what it is.
57:07We're not despondent.
57:08We'll get out there for the eighth leg, and we'll hammer it.
57:10Well, we'll give it the best shot.
57:13It all comes down to now.
57:15It does.
57:16We've seen the world, and now we're racing.
57:18Ah!
57:19Let's go!
57:20Come on!
57:21Oh!
57:22That's all right, isn't it?
57:23One mishap could jeopardise our position.
57:26Why can't we catch up 19 hours?
57:29Everybody knows that you can catch up time.
57:31Run, Sean, Ed, run!
57:32We just need to get that extra little push to win.
57:36I think we can do it.
57:37Vote!
57:37Vote!
57:37Vote!
57:38If Thomas and I can win this race, it will mean the world to me.
57:42I feel the pressure's on.
57:43Let's go!
57:45Go!
57:46Go!
57:46Faster!
57:47Faster!
57:47It goes all down to this book.
57:50Why does the...
