00:00And anybody who is talking about 2028 doesn't understand the urgency of 2025.
00:11Doesn't understand the assaults that we are under right now.
00:17These are serious times.
00:20And we have a bunch of unserious people
00:23who are making these decisions and making life harder for our families.
00:32Making it difficult for us to build legacies.
00:37Making it more challenging to say that we understand the assignment of now.
00:43But we have to remember,
00:46these are not the times for us to feel powerless.
00:49These are times for us to understand our power.
00:53We stand on the shoulders of those who saw injustice
01:01and were still impatient for change.
01:05And knew that they would be the ones to lead the charge.
01:10We stand on the shoulders of people like Mary McLeod Bethune,
01:15who was born in Maysville,
01:19founded the National Council of Negro Women,
01:21three decades before the passage of the Voting Rights Act.
01:28We stand on the shoulders of people like Robert Smalls.
01:32Born into slavery in Buford,
01:35but escaped to his freedom.
01:38And after a civil war,
01:40he represented the people of South Carolina
01:43in the United States Congress.
01:50We stand on the shoulders of another son of the Palmetto State.
01:57My grandfather.
02:00Reverend Dr. James Joshua Thomas,
02:03who had a deep Jamaican accent his entire life,
02:11but had South Carolina grit all through his bones.
02:18A deep Jamaican accent his entire life,
02:22but maybe was the most patriotic American that I've ever met.
02:25He loved this country.
02:35He loved this country not because he was ignorant
02:38of this country's complicated past.
02:41In fact, it's the opposite.
02:43He was born into this country's complicated past.
02:47But he loved this country because
02:51of what it represented.
02:56A hope for a better future.
03:00He knew that America was the most unique experiment
03:03in the history of the world.
03:05And that promise
03:07was worth protecting.
03:12And just before I deployed for Afghanistan
03:14with the 82nd,
03:17yeah, oh, airborne.
03:21My grandfather gave me a Bible.
03:23And y'all know it's one of those, you know,
03:24little Bibles, just the New Testament in it.
03:26Little ones, green copy.
03:28So if it literally was small enough,
03:30it fit right in my flak vest.
03:31And I put it in my flak vests
03:32before I went on every mission.
03:33And on the front cover,
03:37he wrote an inscription.
03:40And it just simply said,
03:42Have faith, not fear.
03:45And I used to recite that
03:47before I went on every mission.
03:49Have faith, not fear.
03:50Have faith, not fear.
03:51Have faith, not fear.
03:52I might have recited before I got up here
03:53to give this speech.
03:57But my grandfather also understood something too.
04:00That while he wrote faith, not fear
04:02in the front of that Bible,
04:03he also understood that as the Bible says,
04:05that faith without work is dead.
04:13Have faith, not fear.
04:15But faith without work is dead.
04:18So, all my friends,
04:21if you share the same optimism that I feel,
04:25if you share the same aspirations that I know,
04:29if you know in your heart
04:31that America can be better tomorrow
04:33than it is today,
04:34then let us refuse to be the party
04:36that is governed by fear,
04:38and let us have faith
04:39that our cause is just
04:40and that our vision is true.
04:43And then let us turn around
04:45and turn that faith into action.
04:48Let those actions be our legacy.
04:50And let that legacy be those
04:52that our children will know
04:54that we understood the assignment.
04:56Not tomorrow, not next week,
04:58but right here and right now.
05:00It is with that action
05:02that we will lead.
05:04It is with that action
05:05that we will win.
05:06With God as our protector.
05:08With God as our protector.
05:14With the wind at our back.
05:17And knowing that there is no weapon
05:20that is formed against us
05:21that shall prosper.
05:25Let us strive boldly into a future
05:28that those who came before us hope for
05:31and those who come after us
05:32that they deserve.
05:34So God bless you.
05:35Thank you so much.
05:36And let's leave no one behind.
