00:00running home from school every lunchtime

00:02because we knew that these letters were due.

00:06And there was another lad called Stephen Kiddy

00:08who got an apprenticeship who ended up becoming

00:10the groundsman at Sheffield Wednesday for a long time.

00:15And Steve Kiddy lived nearby school

00:18and I lived a bit further away.

00:20And I remember one day he turned up at school and said,

00:23oh, I've got my letters arrived in the post.

00:25And I left for school before post arrived.

00:28So I legged it home that day and my mum was at home

00:32and she said, it's there.

00:33And so I opened it up and I'd got the offer of an apprenticeship.

00:37I had it all the way through growing up.

00:39Ian Mellor's son, will he be as good as his dad?

00:42The thing for me was, which maybe helped,

00:44the fact that my older brother didn't quite make it.

00:46He was a good player, but he wasn't quite at the level

00:49to make it as a professional.

00:50And so I think he had a lot of that burden, that pressure

00:53because he was the first sort of son.

00:55Whereas for me, it was a case of quite naturally

00:58scoring a lot of goals from a very young age.

01:01I think Derby games are so special.

01:04And this is the only time where table position doesn't matter,

01:10league doesn't matter which league you are.

01:15And local Derbys are all special.

01:19It was a great move for me in the end.

01:21But yeah, on the fifth time, I thought, well,

01:24the club obviously wanted to accept the transfer fee.

01:27And I went to talks with Howard Wilmson.

01:30And I'm trying to think of the old chairman.

01:32I can't think of his name.

01:35Can you remember?

01:36No, not at that time.

01:37Right, OK then, memory.

01:38It's a bit before my time, mate.

01:39It's a bit before your time.

01:41So I had talks with Howard and listened to what plans he had

01:46and then decided to sign for Sheffield Wednesday.
