00:00:00This year the National Football League has become the National Fun League.
00:00:04They put the refrigerator in the backfield in Chicago.
00:00:07Here in New England, they have the house.
00:00:09And everybody knows that all refrigerators have to eventually be defrosted.
00:00:13This play was probably the most gutty play that the Pats have used all year long.
00:00:19I think it virtually turned their season around as you see the touchdown pass to Greg Hawthorne.
00:00:26And this is Steve Moore, number 67, the house 6'4".
00:00:30Now says he weighs 295 pounds.
00:00:33It's becoming the in thing to go for that 300 mark.
00:00:37He told Coach Berry that he wants to carry the ball.
00:00:40I'll catch a touchdown pass today.
00:00:43New England won the toss.
00:00:45They will be receiving.
00:00:47Stefan Starring is the deep back on the return with Hawthorne and Jones off on the wings.
00:00:54And Raul Allegre will be kicking off with the Indianapolis Colts.
00:00:57The sun is playing a little hide and seek with us today.
00:01:00Right now, as you can tell from the shadows, it is out at Sullivan Stadium.
00:01:14High but short.
00:01:16And taken as a two yard line by Starring.
00:01:19Starring is at 15 and returns right at the 20 yard line.
00:01:24Where Tate Randall makes the tackle.
00:01:26A return of some 18 yards and the New England offense will go to work.
00:01:30Let's take a look at that offense.
00:01:32Steve Grogan the quarterback with Tony Collins, Craig James the two running backs.
00:01:36The wide receiver is Danley Morgan and Irving Fryer.
00:01:38The tight end is Lynn Dawson.
00:01:40This of course being the normal set that offensive line of Holloway,
00:01:43Hannah Morris, Wooten and the house, Steve Moore.
00:01:46Set it at the New England 20 yard line first down.
00:01:51Tony Collins and Craig James are the two running backs.
00:01:56And James gets the call and pops it for six yards.
00:01:59He goes to the 20 to the 26th where Cliff Odom makes the tackle.
00:02:03It will be second down and four.
00:02:05Let's look at the defense of the Indianapolis Colts.
00:02:07It's been a very good defense for them.
00:02:09Donnell Thompson, Brad White and Chris Scott.
00:02:11The basic 3-4 is what we'll look at.
00:02:14Johnny Cooks, Cliff Odom, Barry Krause.
00:02:16Number one draft choice Dwayne Bickett the rookie.
00:02:19Number 50 from the University of Southern California.
00:02:21Defensive backs Preston Davis and Eugene Daniel on the corners
00:02:24near San Francisco and Anthony Young at the safety.
00:02:28Second down and four.
00:02:30And here's James.
00:02:32This time he is met at the 25 yard line so he will lose one on the play
00:02:37as Johnny Cooks and Cliff Odom are there.
00:02:40It will be third down and five.
00:02:45Very windy down on the field, Sam.
00:02:48Warm in the 60s.
00:02:49It's going to drop as the afternoon goes on.
00:02:51But there is a lot of wind.
00:02:53And in the first period, New England, as you can tell from the flag,
00:02:55is going into that wind.
00:02:57And we have two of the best punters a matchup today in the National Football League.
00:03:01And it will be a factor as we go along and play the game of field position.
00:03:05Third down and five.
00:03:07Three wide receivers in for the Patriots.
00:03:09Here's Drogan from the shotgun.
00:03:11As time throws a sliding reception, and now they're going to rule it incomplete.
00:03:16Thought he had it at the 31.
00:03:18It was starring.
00:03:21Eugene Daniel was there for the coach.
00:03:23It will be fourth down and five.
00:03:25And the Patriots will be kicking.
00:03:27It was a good call.
00:03:28We see Drogan in the shotgun.
00:03:30Watch it bounce.
00:03:31We don't get a good look at it.
00:03:33But 81 starring, I think, trapped the ball.
00:03:35It bounced before it came into his hands.
00:03:39Here's a look at number 88, Robbie Martin.
00:03:43Martin has a problem with that right elbow.
00:03:46And he's had some infections.
00:03:48It has busted open.
00:03:49He's had it sewn up.
00:03:50And here's Rich Camarillo.
00:03:55Not that good a kick for Rich.
00:03:57You expect a great one every time out.
00:03:58Taken by Martin at the 43.
00:04:00He returns it to the 50.
00:04:02An end to Patriot territory near the 47-yard line.
00:04:08Mosita Tupu was there for New England.
00:04:10Let's look at that offense of the coach with Mike Fagel at quarterback.
00:04:15And he has a pair of really outstanding running backs with Wansley and McMillan.
00:04:21Butler and Capers, the wide receivers, Pat Beach is the tight end.
00:04:24A very good offensive line.
00:04:26Hinton, that's Donaldson, Schultz, and Baldischwiler.
00:04:31Indianapolis at the New England 47-yard line first down.
00:04:38For the Colts, their first offensive play from scrimmage.
00:04:41And the give is to McMillan.
00:04:44And he has three yards to the 44.
00:04:46He'll be second down at seven as Blackman and McGrew are there for the defense.
00:04:51Let's look at that defense with Ken Sims, who's really coming into his own.
00:04:55Dennis Owens and Julius Adams, who will be retiring at the end of the season.
00:04:59Andre Tippett.
00:05:00Boy, they don't come any better than that.
00:05:01Rembert and McGrew are the two inside linebackers.
00:05:03I'll tell you the story on Steve Nelson.
00:05:05Don Blackman is the other one.
00:05:06Lippett, Claiborne, James, and Marion, the secondary.
00:05:10Second down and seven.
00:05:11No score.
00:05:12Ballgame just underway.
00:05:1412.45, time remaining in the first quarter.
00:05:22Quick screen to Wayne.
00:05:23Capers and Flags are everywhere.
00:05:26Ronnie Lippett was there for New England.
00:05:30Chris Hinton tackled number 42, Ronnie Lippett.
00:05:34It was a quick screen, and he didn't give the runner a chance to run the football.
00:05:44Preliminary holding against the Indianapolis Colts.
00:05:5475.
00:05:56Okay.
00:05:57There we go, Black.
00:05:58Above the waist and behind.
00:06:00Number 75 offense.
00:06:01Ten-yard penalty.
00:06:02Repeat second down.
00:06:04It's a play-action pass.
00:06:05He's throwing quickly out to the receiver.
00:06:0775 is the key block.
00:06:08Actually, Wayne Capers should have waited for 75 to knock the corner outside,
00:06:14and the key is for him to run up inside.
00:06:16And so the coordination there between the receiver and 75, Chris Hinton, was not right.
00:06:23And so the play goes back now to the Indianapolis 48-yard line.
00:06:30With his second down and 14.
00:06:34He just barely gets it off as Blackman was coming.
00:06:38Wansley was the hot receiver just trying to dump it off.
00:06:43And Faygo very slowly getting up.
00:06:47It'll be third down and 14.
00:06:50Third down and 14 for the Colts.
00:06:53Faygo's dropping straight back.
00:06:54You have to watch both those outside linebackers.
00:06:56Right in the middle of the screen, 55, Don Blackman, they're playmakers.
00:07:01They tackle.
00:07:02They have interceptions.
00:07:03They cause safeties.
00:07:04They knock down passes.
00:07:06They're going to have to deal with both those linebackers of the pass today.
00:07:13Third down and 14.
00:07:14A tough third down conversion for the Colts.
00:07:16They made 40% of their third down from the shotgun.
00:07:20Faygo's deep over the middle and way overthrown.
00:07:24Ray Butler.
00:07:26So it'll be fourth down.
00:07:35Anticipating the punt, Irving Fryer dropping back for the New England Patriots.
00:07:40And Ron Stark, the number one kicker in the National Football League
00:07:43with a 46.6 yard average, will be kicking to Fryer.
00:07:57And he goes into the end zone for the touchback.
00:07:59We'll bring it out to the 20-yard line.
00:08:01A kick of 52 yards.
00:08:0311.58 left to go first quarter.
00:08:06We have no score.
00:08:13New England with the ball at their own 20-yard line,
00:08:15second time that the Patriots have been on offense.
00:08:20Rob Dower, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
00:08:24The Colts had an excellent opportunity.
00:08:26They had the ball inside the Patriot 50-yard line.
00:08:30And as we said on top, they're going to have to run the ball.
00:08:33And they can't give up those opportunities that they had in good field positions.
00:08:39Kansas City out in front of Pittsburgh by a score of 7-0.
00:08:47Terry with a 47-yard interception in that ballgame.
00:08:50And here's Tony Collins.
00:08:51He gets his first call and picks up three yards on the play.
00:08:54From the 20 to the 23, second down and seven.
00:08:57Cliff Odom, the leading tackler for the Colts, is the man who brought him down.
00:09:01They're going to run the ball to their left side.
00:09:03John Hanna and Brian Holloway.
00:09:05You can see right now Holloway and Hanna.
00:09:08Two hits.
00:09:09They cause movement.
00:09:10They cause movement.
00:09:11And the back gets four or five yards.
00:09:13Those two are probably the best tandem in the league.
00:09:20And here's Drogan to throw.
00:09:22Pass is complete to Stanley Morgan.
00:09:24Morgan has a first down at the 31-yard line.
00:09:27A gain of nine on the play.
00:09:28Barry Crouse has the coverage.
00:09:36They'll call it the 32-yard line.
00:09:41No score, 11-0-5.
00:09:42Time remaining.
00:09:43We're in the first quarter.
00:09:45Sullivan Stadium.
00:09:47The New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.
00:09:57Play action fake.
00:09:58Quick screen to the outside here in Friars.
00:10:01And back-to-back first downs for the New England Patriots.
00:10:05A gain of 12 yards on the play.
00:10:07Dwayne Bickett with the stop.
00:10:09Brian Holloway would be the leading blocker on this quick screen.
00:10:12And when you have those great outside receivers.
00:10:14Watch 76 now.
00:10:16He's outside.
00:10:17He has to block the corner.
00:10:18Block the corner.
00:10:19Receiver.
00:10:20Morgan steps up inside.
00:10:21Gets a good speed and picks up another first down.
00:10:25Now, Steve Grogan, playing the last four ballgames, but missing, what,
00:10:3018 games prior to that.
00:10:33And has come back as a better quarterback than when he went away.
00:10:37I think the self-evaluation and self-assessment has really helped.
00:10:42He is a lot more patient now, Charlie.
00:10:46Tony Collins, the ball carrier.
00:10:47Here's Cliff Odom with the tackle.
00:10:50When they get close to the 50-yard line,
00:10:52that's when I would look for Grogan to take a look at trying to go for the bomb
00:10:57downfield, either Fryer or Stanley Morgan.
00:10:59And they're close now.
00:11:04Second down and nine.
00:11:05Now, the reason that Grogan was out is the fact that Eason,
00:11:10in fact, just beat him out.
00:11:12And he sat patiently for 18 games and didn't take a snap.
00:11:16And they've won four in a row.
00:11:19We'll be back in when Tony was hurt and has had the hot hand ever since.
00:11:22Craig James, it is incomplete.
00:11:26It'll be third down and nine at the 45-yard line for the Patriots
00:11:29in their own territory.
00:11:31You can't miss those plays, Charlie.
00:11:33He had Craig James isolated on number 50, Dwayne Pickett,
00:11:38and a one-on-one, he'd have caught that football,
00:11:41and they'd have had a first down and might have crossed the 40-yard line
00:11:44of the Colts.
00:11:48The Rams out in front of the Giants in the first quarter by a score of 7-0.
00:11:52Eric Dickerson scoring for Los Angeles from a yard away.
00:11:56Third down and nine.
00:11:57No score here at Sullivan Stadium.
00:12:02Right side, it is James, puts an inside move,
00:12:06crosses the 50 to the 49-yard line of Indianapolis.
00:12:10He'll pick up six, so it'll be fourth down and three.
00:12:13Eugene Daniel with the tackle.
00:12:15And that means that Rich Camarillo will come in to kick it away,
00:12:19and Rob Martin will come in for the return.
00:12:24Here is Martin.
00:12:26The last kick by Camarillo was only 32 yards,
00:12:30and that, of course, is into the wind,
00:12:33and that wind is really a rough wind.
00:12:37The elbow problem that we talked about, the right elbow of Robbie Martin,
00:12:41he has pads on both of them, of course, playing on the artificial turf.
00:12:45Here's the catch.
00:12:48This is a better one.
00:12:50Taken at the 10-yard line and cut down at the 12.
00:12:54Excellent coverage by the special team.
00:12:57Jim Bowman was down for the Patriots.
00:12:59We've got no score, a 39-yard kick.
00:13:01Back in a moment.
00:13:05Behind the glass panels, that is the office of head coach Raymond Berry,
00:13:09and in his office watching the telecast is Steve Nelson,
00:13:13who was injured, kind of a freak injury this week, we'll tell you about it.
00:13:16Here come the Colts, first down from their own 12-yard line,
00:13:19no score in the ballgame.
00:13:22Quick pass is complete to George Wonsley.
00:13:25Wonsley has it at the 18-yard line, so he'll pick up six.
00:13:29It'll be second down and four.
00:13:31Andre Tippett and Roland James were there very quickly for the defense,
00:13:34but the Colts need a little working room.
00:13:36Right now, they need to knock out a couple of first downs,
00:13:39because if they don't, they're going to have an exchange
00:13:42and the Patriots will have the ball in the 50-yard line,
00:13:45and that's going to cause them problems with the field goal
00:13:47and, of course, the possibility of a touchdown.
00:13:49They've got to get a couple of first downs in this drive.
00:13:53Second down and four.
00:14:00Wonsley is missed by Johnny Rembers.
00:14:11John Hanna has been here since 1973,
00:14:14and he should know because he watches the defense all the time,
00:14:17and we couldn't agree with him more.
00:14:19I think this is one of the reasons the Pats are so stable this year.
00:14:22The defense is keeping them in every game,
00:14:25and very frankly, they're making plays happen also.
00:14:29Third down and four, no gain on the last play.
00:14:31The ball's still at the 18-yard line.
00:14:35You look for Fagle to throw it, you look for the blitz.
00:14:38Pressure comes from the outside.
00:14:39He gets it off, but it is incomplete.
00:14:42John Blackman was blitzing again.
00:14:45It'll be fourth down and four.
00:14:47Now, while we set up for the kick,
00:14:49we mentioned Steve Nelson with the eye injury.
00:14:52He was in practice this week, was hit in the eye with a football.
00:14:55They were running a drill, did not have his helmet on.
00:14:57They were involved in a drill.
00:14:58He didn't have his helmet on, and Andre Tippett threw him the ball.
00:15:02Steve obviously didn't see it, and he got hit in the eye,
00:15:04and he was in the hospital, and he was not supposed to be here today.
00:15:08The report that we had is that he would be in the hospital for about five days,
00:15:12but this game is not sold out, so it was blacked out locally,
00:15:16so he has come out to the coach's office so he can watch the game.
00:15:21Here's Fryer on the return.
00:15:23Heads towards the near side.
00:15:24Coast to vent.
00:15:26Can't make it around the corner.
00:15:28Returns to the 37-yard line.
00:15:30Seven and a half minutes left to go first quarter.
00:15:32We've got a timeout and no score.
00:15:38Your team does play here on NBC,
00:15:40and right now the two teams that are playing,
00:15:42the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Cokes,
00:15:44and there's Raymond Berry.
00:15:46He's quite a riverboat gambler as a coach.
00:15:48He likes to have something strange and go for it and go against the odds.
00:15:53That call last week had to come in from Las Vegas.
00:15:57No, don't say that.
00:15:58Don't say that.
00:16:00Here's New England at their old 37-yard line first down.
00:16:03Of course, what he's talking about is when he brought Steve Moore the house
00:16:06into the backfield, and then he ran the flea flicker.
00:16:10Collins spins his way to the 50-yard line.
00:16:14Gain of 13.
00:16:15First down.
00:16:18Johnny Cooks makes the play for the Coast Defense.
00:16:27They're going to continue to run to that left side,
00:16:29Brian Holloway and John Hanna.
00:16:31You can see Holloway, 76.
00:16:33He stands him up, moves him right to the outside.
00:16:36Number 95, Chris Scott.
00:16:43Keep running the ball to your left, Steve.
00:16:49Here's Craig James.
00:16:52Donnell Thompson, Brad White for the Coats.
00:16:56Let's check the scoreboard.
00:16:59Pittsburgh and Kansas City now tied seven apiece.
00:17:02Stallworth scoring the touchdown for the Steelers, receiving the pass.
00:17:06New Orleans, three.
00:17:07Seattle, nothing.
00:17:09Anderton, a 20-yard field goal.
00:17:12And Buffalo leading Houston, three.
00:17:16Stallworth with a 24-yard field goal.
00:17:20Here we have no score.
00:17:23And the pass is incomplete.
00:17:26Stanley Morgan, Eugene Daniel had the coverage for the Colts,
00:17:30so it'll be third down and eight.
00:17:32Let's go back.
00:17:33We have another score just in.
00:17:35Tampa Bay, seven, and St. Louis, nothing.
00:17:39A 47-yard field goal.
00:17:40Tampa Bay, of course, they have a tendency to lead early in the game,
00:17:44but then they fade.
00:17:45They've been doing that for nine weeks.
00:17:47That's right.
00:17:48If they can take the fourth quarter out of the game, they might be seven and two.
00:17:53Drogan has completed three of six for 27 yards.
00:17:58Third down.
00:18:01From the shotgun with three wide receivers.
00:18:06He'll never make it.
00:18:07He gets to the 46.
00:18:10So it'll be fourth down and six as Scott Verkus makes the stop,
00:18:14and Rich Camarillo will come in to kick one more time.
00:18:18Both quarterbacks look a little tentative.
00:18:21The Colts are taking away the outside receivers,
00:18:23and you can see right now there's nobody to throw the ball to,
00:18:26and Drogan's going to put it down and go down.
00:18:29And both quarterbacks, Charlie, look to me right now
00:18:31like they're a little tentative and they're not hitting those open receivers.
00:18:37Camarillo kicking to Robbie Martin.
00:18:48And he's going to hang this one inside of the 20.
00:18:51He's going to take a bounce outside of the 20,
00:18:53but be down at that point by Mosita Tupu.
00:18:57So the Colts have the ball after that 26-yard kick.
00:19:00We have no score.
00:19:04Sam, last week Indianapolis made a change in quarterback.
00:19:07It's early here, but can we see two quarterbacks for the Colts today?
00:19:10Well, I think so.
00:19:12I watch the quarterback's feet, and Mike Pago looks a little tentative.
00:19:16And if you watch his feet, they're very, very nervous.
00:19:20He's getting rid of the ball much too quick
00:19:22and is not seeing the defense in slow motion.
00:19:26Well, if I had blitzing linebackers coming at me,
00:19:28I think that I might have quick feet also.
00:19:30Well, Blackman and Tippett will do that to you.
00:19:33Yes.
00:19:36The expression hearing footsteps.
00:19:38And on artificial turf, you can hear footsteps more loudly than you can hear on grass.
00:19:43That's right.
00:19:44I was fine, Charlie.
00:19:45I had slow feet but quick shoulders.
00:19:47And that is Matt Cofer on the sideline from San Diego State in his fourth year.
00:19:52The quarterback situation at Indianapolis has not been decided.
00:19:59Right now, I would say, as a football team, that's Rod Dauhauer's biggest problem
00:20:05because Art Schleester started in the first game against Pittsburgh.
00:20:09And Dauhauer said it would take what a—
00:20:11Catastrophe.
00:20:12A catastrophe.
00:20:13Well, they had it about the fifth game because Schleester's no longer there
00:20:15and Pago's a quarterback.
00:20:17And Schleester considered it a catastrophe.
00:20:21From the 23-yard line, first down.
00:20:24And here is Wansley to the 27-yard line.
00:20:27John Blackman makes the tackle along with Fred Merriam.
00:20:30Here's an update from Bob Costa.
00:20:33Charlie, at Kansas City, the Steelers have tied the Chiefs at seven
00:20:36on this 13-yarder from David Woodley to John Stallworth.
00:20:39Earlier, Deron Cherry of the Chiefs, who leads the NFL with six interceptions,
00:20:43picked one off and brought it back 47 yards for the game's opening TD.
00:20:46So it's 7-7.
00:20:47Back to Charlie and Sam.
00:20:50Thank you, Bob.
00:20:51A tie here also.
00:20:52It's 0-0, second down and six.
00:20:54The ball at the 27-yard line.
00:20:56We've got four minutes and 48 seconds left to go in the first quarter.
00:21:00Pago spins to the 26-yard line as he got caught in a crowd.
00:21:05Andre Tippett was there.
00:21:06He ends up losing a yard and will be third down and seven.
00:21:12Let's watch Pago's feet.
00:21:14He drops straight back now.
00:21:15He's looking upfield.
00:21:18Now he pulls the ball down, and he's an inherent scrambler.
00:21:22When he was with Frank Cush, they ran the ball a great deal.
00:21:25And what he's doing right now, he's not seeing the defense,
00:21:29and he's not waiting.
00:21:30He's got to step up in the pocket and be more patient.
00:21:34And that goes down as a sack for Andre Tippett.
00:21:37That's the first in the ballgame.
00:21:38Third down and seven.
00:21:44Pago has protection but overthrows at the right side George Wansley,
00:21:48and he'll be fourth down and seven at the 26-yard line.
00:21:52So New England, although they haven't scored in the ballgame,
00:21:54have kept the coach pinned at their end of the field.
00:21:57I think Pago is really helping that cause.
00:21:59George Wansley was wide open and definitely would have had a first down.
00:22:03They've got to be careful now as they play this game of exchanging
00:22:07because New England's going to blow this thing wide open.
00:22:10Ron Stark will be kicking with the wind.
00:22:12The leading punter in the National Football League, Irving Fryer,
00:22:15set for the return.
00:22:16He is second in punt returns in the AFC.
00:22:20He gives him a lot of garbage too.
00:22:22Not that good a kick.
00:22:25Will be taken by one of the up backs, and that is Roland James.
00:22:29And James returns it to the 42-yard line.
00:22:34Orlando Lowry of the Colts makes the tackle.
00:22:38A putt of 47 yards with a 13-yard return as New England will go to work
00:22:42with the ball.
00:22:44Don't forget next Sunday be sure to join NBC Sports
00:22:46in exciting football doubleheader.
00:22:48Pittsburgh at Houston, Miami at Indianapolis, Buffalo at Cleveland.
00:22:52Those are the early games.
00:22:55And the late games, Cincinnati at Los Angeles, New England at Seattle,
00:22:58San Diego at Denver, and Kansas City at San Francisco.
00:23:02So your team plays here.
00:23:03Kickoff with NBC Sports.
00:23:07New England for their own 42-yard line with no score in the ballgame,
00:23:10and here is James back to the line of scrimmage, and that is it.
00:23:13His number one draft choice, Dwayne Pickett.
00:23:15Meets him at the 42-yard line.
00:23:17It will be second down and 10.
00:23:22Tony Collins has to make that block on the outside linebacker, Dwayne Pickett,
00:23:27if that play is going to work.
00:23:29And what's happening now, both outside linebackers are blitzing to force
00:23:33the lead backer to make that block in the backfield,
00:23:36and it's hurting the Patriots because now they have another second down
00:23:40and 10.
00:23:43Grogan to throw, drops it off to James.
00:23:46James at the line of scrimmage, a little head fake.
00:23:49Moves to the 46-yard line, so he'll pick out four as a receiver,
00:23:53Preston David.
00:23:54Defensive left cornerback is the man who stopped him.
00:23:56It will be third down and six.
00:23:58The bottom was also there, leading tackler for the coach.
00:24:02Grogan's trying to throw the ball upfield.
00:24:04He looks upfield.
00:24:05He doesn't see anybody.
00:24:06He lays it off to 32, Craig James.
00:24:09Now he gives him a move, breaks to the outside,
00:24:11but this is a very fine pursuing defense on the part of the Colts
00:24:16and 98 Johnny Cooks made the play.
00:24:21Third down and six.
00:24:25From the shotgun and the blitz, and he got him.
00:24:30Johnny Cooks, his second sack of the season
00:24:34and the first of the ballgame for the Colts.
00:24:36And that was a big one.
00:24:37He had 11-and-a-half sacks last year,
00:24:40and he's only had two sacks now in nine games.
00:24:44Two minutes, 35 seconds.
00:24:46That is the time remaining in the first quarter.
00:24:48And here is the sack that sets up the seventh putt in this period.
00:24:53And John Hannah looked like he was on the ground,
00:24:56and he missed 98 Johnny Cooks.
00:24:59Big, big play now because of field position exchange.
00:25:03Rich Camarillo kicking to Robbie Martin.
00:25:06A loss of 13 on the sack.
00:25:15Not that good a kick.
00:25:17A terrible kick into the wind.
00:25:19Goes out of bounds at the 46-yard line of Indianapolis.
00:25:23So the Colts with excellent field position for the second time in the ballgame.
00:25:30The two putters were supposed to be one of the best matchups,
00:25:35but watch him drop the ball.
00:25:36That's the most important thing.
00:25:37He drops it, and he doesn't really make good contact.
00:25:41It's a 27-yard kick.
00:25:43We have two of the best putters in the National Football League,
00:25:46but maybe they didn't hear us.
00:25:48No, but maybe they know that the other putter is at the other end,
00:25:50and they're trying to do a little one-upmanship,
00:25:53put a little pressure on themselves, and it's not working.
00:25:56The Colts, from their own 47-yard line, first down,
00:26:00no score in the ballgame, two minutes, time remaining, first quarter.
00:26:04The screen right side is complete to Wayne Capers,
00:26:08and Capers goes scooting out of bounds at the 41-yard line of New England,
00:26:13a gain of 12 yards in the first down.
00:26:15Johnny Rembert was the first defender there for the Patriots at the far sideline.
00:26:21I think it was a good call now to get Pagel started.
00:26:25Cincinnati 7 and Cleveland nothing.
00:26:28Umer Esiason to Brooks from eight yards out.
00:26:32Big now in front of Kansas City.
00:26:34They were trailing 7-0.
00:26:35Now they lead by three.
00:26:36Anderson with a 35-yard field goal, the last score in that ballgame.
00:26:42No score here, first down at the 41-yard line of New England.
00:26:47The Colts trying to get some offense going.
00:26:49Pagel fires, and it is incomplete, throwing behind the tight end Pat Bees.
00:26:54So it'll be second down and 10 at the 41-yard line.
00:26:58Andre Tippett was there for the Patriots.
00:27:01Chicago 7 and Detroit nothing.
00:27:03Fuller from a yard out, scoring the touchdown in that ballgame.
00:27:07And Jackson from eight yards out.
00:27:09Ernest Jackson scoring for Minnesota.
00:27:11They lead Green Bay by a score of 7-0.
00:27:14So that updates the scoring that we have in the National Football League
00:27:17in the early games this afternoon.
00:27:19The Colts now going with two tight ends.
00:27:21Second down and 10 at the New England 41-yard line.
00:27:28Andy McMillan, and a yard is it to the 40.
00:27:33Ken Sims and Johnny Rembert along with Andre Tippett.
00:27:37There's a big threesome for the Patriots.
00:27:39It'll be third down and nine.
00:27:41Tippett is a defensive end playing linebacker.
00:27:44He folds back to the inside and makes the play on the line of scrimmage
00:27:48with help from 98 Dennis Owens.
00:27:53120 the time remaining in the first quarter,
00:27:56and the clock is moving with no score.
00:27:59The Colts now with three wide receivers.
00:28:01The Colts have gained a total of 26 yards total off its first quarter.
00:28:09Pass is complete and be close to the first down.
00:28:12Oliver Williams pulled it in.
00:28:15Close to nine yards, which is what they need.
00:28:18Let's see where they mark the ball.
00:28:21It's going to be very, very tight and may come to the gutty call right now.
00:28:25And the Colts in a position at about the 31 or the 32-yard line of New England
00:28:30that they may go ahead and go on fourth down, go for it if they don't have it.
00:28:34Maybe they'll come in with a refrigerator, run a play action pass,
00:28:37and throw a touchdown.
00:28:38Well, we've got the refrigerator in Chicago.
00:28:40We've got the house at New England.
00:28:42Maybe the Colts will come out with a garage.
00:28:46A two-car garage.
00:28:47A two-car garage.
00:28:48Why not?
00:28:51With Indy cars, of course.
00:28:53Here we go.
00:28:55And so we'll have the measurement from the far side.
00:28:57We even milked that one to death, I think.
00:28:59That's about all we can do with that one.
00:29:00It's going to be less than the length of a football.
00:29:03Go for it.
00:29:04You're the underdog.
00:29:05By nine and a half points, which is the largest spread on the board this week,
00:29:08so I would gamble.
00:29:09Sure, wouldn't you?
00:29:10No question about it.
00:29:11With the win factors being what they are right now,
00:29:14less than a football to go.
00:29:15They've got Wansley.
00:29:16They've got McMillian.
00:29:17They've got a 4.5 average.
00:29:19Go for it and get the first down.
00:29:23And they're going for it.
00:29:24Now, Kevin, call number 71 was talking to the official.
00:29:28Does that mean at 6'7", 283 pounds, he's going to be in the backfield?
00:29:35No.
00:29:38No, it doesn't.
00:29:39You're right.
00:29:40Good thought, though.
00:29:50First down.
00:29:52Inside the 25 to the 24-yard line, a gain of seven, George Wansley.
00:29:58Fred Marion with the tackle, and he had a hole to run through.
00:30:02And it's the left side.
00:30:03Chris Hinton, number 75.
00:30:05It's from the I-formation.
00:30:06Now, watch Wansley.
00:30:07He has a tremendous center of gravity.
00:30:09He leaps through the hole, and he wanted the first down so badly
00:30:13that he kept his eyes focused.
00:30:15He could have broke that thing to the outside,
00:30:17and it might have gone for touchdown.
00:30:19The gun sounds.
00:30:20That is the end of the first quarter.
00:30:21We have no score between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots.
00:30:26We'll be back with a second period of action in just a moment.
00:30:35Nesby, Glasgow, taken in the eighth round of the draft, back in 1979,
00:30:39played his collegiate ball for the Huskies, University of Washington.
00:30:47First down, the ball at the New England 24-yard line,
00:30:49first major threat in the ballgame by the Indianapolis Colts.
00:30:53This is their furthest penetration in the Patriot territory.
00:30:56A little faker to pitch out and to come back inside on the trap,
00:30:59George Wansley, who is the leading rusher
00:31:02and the leading receiver for the Colts coming into the ballgame,
00:31:05goes to the 18-yard line.
00:31:07He has six, second down and four.
00:31:09Johnny Rembert makes the tackle.
00:31:11Let's look at the statistics in the first quarter.
00:31:13There's nothing happening in the first quarter,
00:31:16and very frankly, it's the quarterbacks.
00:31:18They have both missed a lot of open receivers, particularly on third down.
00:31:23And they had a total of seven punts.
00:31:26That stat will tell you that there wasn't that much action going.
00:31:29No score.
00:31:31Colts now with a pair of tight ends in the ballgame, second down and four.
00:31:36Flag down on the play, McMillan, the ball carrier,
00:31:40and he'll have won maybe two yards,
00:31:42but let's see what the markers about.
00:31:44Don Blackman makes the tackle,
00:31:46a legal procedure against Indianapolis.
00:31:48Maybe an illegal formation.
00:31:50Well, I think it was an illegal receiver in motion,
00:31:53which had nothing to do with the play.
00:31:57And that is only the second flag in the ballgame.
00:32:03Gordon McCarter is the referee.
00:32:12Illegal shift.
00:32:14Two or more men moving and not resetting for the required one second.
00:32:18Far yard penalty.
00:32:19Repeat second down.
00:32:22So it'll be second down and nine.
00:32:24And they'll place the ball at the 23-yard line.
00:32:27That's critical.
00:32:28They're a second down and four team with two big, strong backs.
00:32:32You have two downs to make four yards, and that gives you another first down.
00:32:36Now they're put into the kind of game that they don't want to play today.
00:32:40That second down and nine, they have to worry about the pass rush.
00:32:43I would look for a draw play here or some type of deceptive or a screen.
00:32:48Second down and nine.
00:32:55There it is, a center screen to McMillan.
00:33:00Points out a block and goes out of bounds at the 10-yard line.
00:33:04And he'll, or maybe the nine, he has the first down, again, of 13 yards.
00:33:08A middle screen right over the center.
00:33:10And what it did was it forced the pats to rush.
00:33:14The linebackers dropped.
00:33:16And you can see right now, screens like Novocaine, takes time to take effect,
00:33:20goes to number 32.
00:33:22There's a void right there.
00:33:24But he makes a heck of a play to avoid the tackle there on 55, Don Blackman.
00:33:29And that's Randy McMillan now looking for the blocker.
00:33:31Butler, come on, Butler, throw the block.
00:33:34Could have had a touchdown instead of a first down.
00:33:37Nine-yard line, first down, goal to go.
00:33:40No score in the ballgame.
00:33:41Colts threatened to take the lead.
00:33:43Well within field goal range of Royula Legray.
00:33:46But they want six.
00:33:49There's the sack at the 19-yard line.
00:33:51Second for the Patriots, and Blackman gets this one.
00:33:55One of the things that you tell quarterbacks all the time,
00:33:58and we have a flag on the play,
00:34:00is don't take the sack when you're in good position for a chip shot field goal.
00:34:05Throw the ball into a blonde flap and a mezzanine.
00:34:11We have a play-action pass, which means that they should have the ample protection.
00:34:15Now look upfield, Mike.
00:34:17He's not there. There's 98.
00:34:19Throw the ball away and don't take the sack.
00:34:26It's academic now because there was a holding penalty.
00:34:29Holding on Ryan Schultz, of course it's refused
00:34:32because the ball would be at about the same spot.
00:34:38The ball at the 18-yard line, loss of nine.
00:34:40It'll be second down and goal to go.
00:34:42Now they have to throw the ball in the end zone from the 18,
00:34:45and that's tough because the defense now does not have to cover 10 yards of the end zone,
00:34:50and they can press your offense like an accordion.
00:34:53Capers wide to this side. Butler is wide to the far side.
00:34:57Reverse. Capers.
00:34:59Free flicker.
00:35:00Go for the end zone. It's there.
00:35:02Touchdown.
00:35:03Oh, Matt Beach has it. 18 yards.
00:35:07We talked about that last night in our meeting.
00:35:10It was the reverse to 87 Capers.
00:35:13Pitch the ball back to Pagel, and 81 was wide open in the end zone,
00:35:17and there's Raymond Berry.
00:35:19Raymond did the same thing last week to Miami,
00:35:22and I would think that you'd want to work against that all week long.
00:35:25It was a daring do with second down and 18.
00:35:29Boy, that was interesting.
00:35:30We talked about that last night in our production meeting.
00:35:33I think we gave them a play, Charlie.
00:35:37A 53-yard drive and nine plays.
00:35:40The touchdown pass covering 18 yards for Pagel
00:35:43is eighth touchdown pass of the year as the extra point is in.
00:35:49It is no good. Off to the left.
00:35:52Raiola Legray misses to the left.
00:35:56So the score remains 6-0.
00:36:01This is the third straight game for the Patriots
00:36:04that their opponents have scored first,
00:36:07And Raiola Legray kicks off to Steffens starring in the end zone.
00:36:11We'll bring it out to the 20-yard line,
00:36:13but as the Patriots offense sets up, Sam, let's go back to that touchdown.
00:36:19It's handed off to Wansley, 34.
00:36:21He gives it back to Capers, 87.
00:36:23Pitches it to Pagel.
00:36:25Pat Beach is wide open, 81 in the end zone,
00:36:28and that takes courage.
00:36:30You've got to do it at the right time, and it's a big play,
00:36:33and that's what the Colts need to do today.
00:36:35They have nothing to lose.
00:36:36They're 3-6, and they're gambling,
00:36:38and they know they don't have a chance, maybe,
00:36:40to get into the playoffs, and the Patriots do.
00:36:42And in addition, Ray Butler was also open in the end zone.
00:36:45You saw him right at the edge of the screen.
00:36:48Here's Drogan throwing low, and the pass is incomplete to Tony Collins.
00:36:52So it'll be second down and 10 at the 20-yard line.
00:36:54Barry Krause had the coverage for the Colts.
00:36:57Colts lead 6-0,
00:36:59and Raiola Legray missing the extra point attempt to the left.
00:37:02You mean that there was another receiver open, Charlie?
00:37:04Yes.
00:37:05Then they should run that reverse to two footfalls to get 14 points.
00:37:08They need that to win today.
00:37:09Only 12.
00:37:1012, okay.
00:37:11The extra point kicker is putting the thrill back
00:37:14into the extra points for the Colts.
00:37:16Second down and 10, Patriots at their own 20-yard line.
00:37:2013 minutes and one second.
00:37:22That is the time remaining in the second quarter.
00:37:26Drogan walks into deep pass,
00:37:28and it is simply just off of the fingertips of Stanley Morgan,
00:37:32who asked to do a hop, skip, and a jump over the bench of the Colts.
00:37:36Eugene Daniel had the coverage.
00:37:40Stanley Morgan now is on Eugene Daniel.
00:37:42Now watch him go outside.
00:37:44Now watch that speed just run by him,
00:37:46throws the ball exactly where it needs to be thrown,
00:37:49to the outside so the corner can't recover,
00:37:52and it was just off his fingertips.
00:37:54And I know Steve Drogan feels that he could never overthrow Stanley Morgan.
00:37:58If he had just a little bit more acceleration,
00:38:01he would have made that play.
00:38:03And you can see Stanley Morgan is the leading receiver
00:38:06in the history of the NFL with a 20.6 average.
00:38:09Six in the secondary for the Colts,
00:38:11third and 10 three-wide receivers for New England.
00:38:14Drogan has completed only four of nine for 31 yards thus far in the ballgame.
00:38:19That's all the time in the world.
00:38:20Deep over the middle, tip, almost intercepted.
00:38:24Keith Lee going for it.
00:38:27Breyer, the intended receiver, will be fourth down and 10,
00:38:30and that means that Rich Camarillo will be kicking.
00:38:33Drogan is trying to throw the ball upfield,
00:38:35but the Colts are overcovering.
00:38:37See, this ball is sailing too high to number 80 and 42.
00:38:42Number 42 on the Colts makes the play, Keith Lee.
00:38:46He's the fifth or sixth back in their nickel concept.
00:38:50Drogan just seems to be off target.
00:38:52The ball is sailing on him.
00:38:54Camarillo kicking to Robbie Martin.
00:38:57This is Camarillo's fifth punt in the ballgame.
00:39:00With the win, taken at the 20-yard line.
00:39:05And Martin has about 10 yards on the return,
00:39:10a kick of 60 yards for Rich Camarillo.
00:39:14Jim Bowman runs him out of bounds.
00:39:16We'll be back.
00:39:18Rod Dauhauer of the Indianapolis Colts in the gambling mode today,
00:39:21a fourth down and a foot, and then the reverse and the flea flicker.
00:39:25Well, it's okay to gamble.
00:39:27You just have to know when to gamble.
00:39:29And that was an excellent call on first down
00:39:31because he had the element of surprise for the touchdown.
00:39:36Were you surprised that he disdained the field goal attempt on fourth and one?
00:39:41I think he knows that he has to get a lot of points today.
00:39:44So anytime he has a chance to go for seven as opposed to the field goal,
00:39:49he's going to take it.
00:39:51Bobble on the sack, paper, and it's dropped back at the 22-yard line.
00:39:55That will be the third sack for the Patriots.
00:39:59Garen Barrett, the rookie from Stanford, is the man who got it.
00:40:03Now for a scoring update, let's join Bob Costas, NFL 85.
00:40:09All right, Charlie, the Browns and Bengals are now tied at seven
00:40:12in the second quarter at Cincinnati.
00:40:14With the Bengals leading 7-0,
00:40:16Ernest Binder takes this pass from Bernie Kozar,
00:40:18breaks the tackle, turns it into a 27-yard touchdown play,
00:40:21so they're tied at seven in the Battle of Ohio.
00:40:23Back to Charlie and Sam.
00:40:25Thank you, Bob.
00:40:26We've broken the tie here.
00:40:27It's Indianapolis 6, New England nothing.
00:40:30On the 18-yard flea flicker touchdown pass off of the reverse.
00:40:35Fagel fires.
00:40:36He's on target.
00:40:37Fires side to the 36-yard line.
00:40:40Ray Butler picks up 13,
00:40:43so the third down is still around five to go,
00:40:46as Raymond Claiborne was there for the New England Patriots.
00:40:49Simms has been an upfield player all year now,
00:40:52but he's getting controlled right there by Kevin Call, number 71,
00:40:56and he's getting some help from the fullback, Randy McMillan.
00:41:0311 minutes and 37 seconds.
00:41:05That is the time remaining in the first half.
00:41:07Colts on top of New England by a score of 6-0
00:41:10as Wayne Capers comes wide to the near side.
00:41:13Fagel has completed 6 of 10 for 72 yards in a touchdown.
00:41:17Obviously, that's a 60%.
00:41:20And he's on target now to Albert Bentley,
00:41:23and Bentley, as the first down, goes out of bounds near the 50-yard line,
00:41:27so he'll pick up 14 yards on the play.
00:41:29Larry McGrew was there for the Patriots.
00:41:32All of a sudden, the Colts' offense is showing some sparks.
00:41:35Well, he's going quickly.
00:41:38He sees a one-on-one to the outside, gets rid of the ball quickly.
00:41:41Bentley, number 20, is isolated on a linebacker,
00:41:44and he's going to win that battle.
00:41:46Anytime you're isolated on a linebacker, that was Larry McGrew, number 50.
00:41:50Got another key first down at midfield.
00:41:54McMillan showing motion to the left side,
00:41:57and Wosley comes back inside
00:42:01and has a yard to the 49-yard line of New England.
00:42:04It'll be 2nd down and 9 down blocks from the linebacker
00:42:07who was there to make the tackle.
00:42:10These are two strong outside linebackers.
00:42:1355 stands the end, right in front of the linebacker.
00:42:16Wosley's got the ball.
00:42:19These are two strong outside linebackers.
00:42:2255 stands the end, right up, keeps his shoulders square,
00:42:25and makes the play to the inside.
00:42:2872 was there to help Lester Williams.
00:42:31These are probably two outside linebackers
00:42:34that could play defensive end in this league,
00:42:37Blackman and Tippett.
00:42:42Inside handoff to McMillan.
00:42:45McMillan to the 44-yard line, gain of 5.
00:42:48And again on the tackle.
00:42:51Injury report on right tackle, Carl Baldischweiler.
00:42:54He's been replaced by Kevin Call for the Coast.
00:42:57And we do not have an injury report on him.
00:43:00We're trying to chase one down right now.
00:43:03Baldischweiler had a neck injury and missed all of last year.
00:43:06And he has been the one solid veteran in that offensive line.
00:43:09And there's Carl Baldischweiler on the sideline.
00:43:12And we don't know what it is right now.
00:43:16The report is no injury on Baldischweiler,
00:43:19just a change in offensive line.
00:43:22Tippett is intercepted, this could be 6.
00:43:40McSwain tipped it, Marion intercepted it,
00:43:43and Mike Pagel saved the touchdown.
00:43:47A return of 24 yards,
00:43:50and a turnover that could spell the end of the Coast League.
00:43:55Mike Pagel is dropping back, he's trying to throw the ball inside.
00:43:58The ball gets tipped, and that's Freddie Marion,
00:44:01the consummate free safety.
00:44:04The number one thing that free safety has to do, he has to be around the ball.
00:44:07He has to be a good athlete and see everything.
00:44:10And made the interception, and those interceptions come from
00:44:13defenders coming towards the football.
00:44:16And this is what the Colts cannot allow to happen.
00:44:20The Patriots with great field position.
00:44:23Indianapolis 24-yard line, trying to capitalize immediately.
00:44:27Here is James. James to the 19, that's a gain of 5.
00:44:31Second and 5. Donnell Thompson with the tackle,
00:44:34the ball inside the 20-yard line.
00:44:37Patriots on the move, let's go to Bob Costas.
00:44:41Charlie with Pittsburgh leading at Kansas City, 13-7 in the second.
00:44:44Bill Tenney hits the rookie, Jeff Smith. Nice catch,
00:44:47and then he makes some nifty moves and breaks tackles toward the end of the run.
00:44:50It turns into a 45-yard touchdown play.
00:44:53Smith's first TD as a pro, after the point, after Kansas City has the lead.
00:44:58And here the Colts have the lead, but it is in jeopardy.
00:45:01Play action, Brogan, towards the end zone,
00:45:04and it's still happening for a touchdown, Stanley Morgan.
00:45:27Brogan's play action pass, he's waiting for Morgan to cross the entire field.
00:45:32And that's very tough, it's a very low throw,
00:45:35but he bends down and gets both knees cuddled together,
00:45:38and he catches the ball. Anytime you throw a crossing pattern,
00:45:41the quarterback's going to need a lot of time for pass protection.
00:45:45Tony Franklin out of the hold of Tony Eason,
00:45:48with the extra point in the lead.
00:45:55And it is there, Tony Franklin's made his last 65 PATs in a row.
00:46:03Tony Franklin will be kicking off, and the barefooted kicker hides his other shoes.
00:46:10People steal it, throw it into the stands as a souvenir.
00:46:16Taken on the far side by Keith Reed.
00:46:25Derwin Williams for the Patriots.
00:46:29Let's go back to that touchdown, Sam.
00:46:32Stanley Morgan is crossing without anyone there.
00:46:35He's crossing from his left to his right.
00:46:3837, Anthony Young is the free safety.
00:46:41They had to be in his zone, and that was an outstanding catch.
00:46:44It took a lot of concentration because Steve Brogan was hurried,
00:46:48and he had to get rid of it, and he saw Morgan wide open.
00:46:51He reached down nicely and made that touchdown catch.
00:46:55And of course, it was a 24-yard drive in two plays,
00:46:58capitalizing on Fred Merriam's interception.
00:47:09We think it was Lester Williams that reached up the nose tackle for the Patriots
00:47:14and knocked it away.
00:47:16And you can see that the excitement has changed from the Colts now to the Patriots.
00:47:22It's a three-step drop. He's going to throw the ball quickly.
00:47:25Now the defensive lineman jumps up.
00:47:27It's coming from the right side, looks like Julius Adams.
00:47:29No, it's Lester Williams.
00:47:30Lester Williams made the play.
00:47:32If you can't get to the passer, as soon as they see him drop quickly,
00:47:35they get their hands up in his face.
00:47:37Second down and 10.
00:47:40There was jumping as Keith Simms got an early start.
00:47:44Flags all over the place.
00:47:49Now, was he pulled off?
00:47:51Offside, right guard, offhand.
00:47:54Right guard is Ron Soule, number 66.
00:47:57And once that Simms saw that move, and he just took out after the motion.
00:48:01Offside, number 66, offhand.
00:48:04Still second down.
00:48:08Have to be very careful here now, because they're down in a hole,
00:48:12and they don't want to have another turnover.
00:48:14Turnovers hurt them last week against the Jets.
00:48:17They had this game going nice and comfortable for them
00:48:20before they got to the end of the game.
00:48:22And now they're down in a hole, and they don't want to have another turnover.
00:48:25Turnovers hurt them last week against the Jets.
00:48:28They had this game going nice and comfortable for them before the turnover.
00:48:32At the 11th, second down and 15.
00:48:35New England leads at 7'6".
00:48:378'44", time remaining first half.
00:48:41Here's Wansley, and he just plows his way to the 20-yard line.
00:48:45He picks up nine yards on the play.
00:48:47He'll be third down and checks Johnny Rimbert with the tackle,
00:48:50as we pause briefly for station identification.
00:48:53This is the NBC Television Network.
00:48:59This is Charlie Jones, Sam Bertigliano.
00:49:01We're in Sullivan Stadium, where the New England Patriots lead
00:49:04the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 7-6.
00:49:07With 8 minutes and 10 seconds left to go in the first half.
00:49:11McMillan for the Colts has picked up 13 yards rushing.
00:49:14Wansley has picked up 24.
00:49:16So together they have totaled 37 yards.
00:49:19They've got to do better than that.
00:49:21The pass is way underthrown, and everybody was covered.
00:49:25So it'll be fourth down and six,
00:49:27and that means that Ron Stark will be kicking,
00:49:30but he will be kicking into the wind.
00:49:32Irving Fryer, on his return,
00:49:34can give the Patriots excellent field position.
00:49:37Watch Ron Stark, the Colt kicker.
00:49:40He really has a problem mentally kicking against the wind.
00:49:56Fitzmerian and Roland James are the two up back,
00:50:00and it's not a very good kick,
00:50:02but will take a Colt foul, and another one.
00:50:06And continues inside the 30, will be down at the 30-yard line.
00:50:11So he got away with a 51-yard kick.
00:50:14Eugene Daniels was down for the Colts to cover it,
00:50:17and New England will have the ball at their own 30-yard line.
00:50:20It's not been that impressive offensively,
00:50:22at their own end of the field, though.
00:50:24That's right.
00:50:25Brogan really hasn't gotten anything going
00:50:27during the course of this game.
00:50:29I believe that that kick, Irving Fryer, the returner,
00:50:32should have fielded that ball.
00:50:34Any time you field the ball,
00:50:36you can add 10 to 15 yards on your field position
00:50:39as a punt returner.
00:50:45Moving up from their own 30-yard line, first down,
00:50:48Brogan says that the wave is going at the wrong time.
00:50:51It's supposed to be when you're on defense, not on offense.
00:50:54And Tony Collins adds three to the 33.
00:50:57It'll be second down and seventh,
00:50:59as Barry Krause makes the tackle.
00:51:02And Brogan, he wants the crowd to stop.
00:51:05Not now.
00:51:06You do the wave when the Colts have the ball.
00:51:08You're bothering me.
00:51:10They haven't done it very much, because they haven't been winning.
00:51:13What they have to do is when the other team's on offense,
00:51:16is when the other team's on offense.
00:51:20I'm not sure the crowd realizes
00:51:22that Brogan's having a problem with his signal.
00:51:32Brogan's going to keep up the middle.
00:51:34That is complete.
00:51:35Big first down is Stanley Morgan.
00:51:3746-yard line of the Colts.
00:51:40Preston Davis and Cliff Odom make the tackle.
00:51:43A gain of 19.
00:51:45First down.
00:51:49This is a zone team,
00:51:51and he's waiting for Brogan to break inside the zone.
00:51:54There he is, 86, right in the hole in the zone.
00:51:57You don't get pressure.
00:51:59You put a lot more pressure
00:52:01on those linebackers and defensive backs
00:52:03when you lay back in the zone defense.
00:52:07Brogan comes out for a breather.
00:52:09Cedric Jones has replaced him.
00:52:11First down, sweep right side is Collins.
00:52:16And he'll have a yard to the 46.
00:52:18It'll be second down and nine,
00:52:20as Thompson was there for the Colts.
00:52:24Six minutes and ten seconds.
00:52:26That is the time remaining in the second quarter.
00:52:29The scoring for the Colts,
00:52:31a flea flicker off of a reverse.
00:52:33Mike Pagel going to his tight end, Pat Beach,
00:52:36and then missing the extra point
00:52:38as Ronald Allegre was wide to the left.
00:52:42The Patriots capitalizing on Fred Merriam's interception.
00:52:45They move 24 yards in a couple of plays,
00:52:48and it was Brogan to Morgan for the touchdown.
00:52:51Extra point was good, 7-6 to England lead.
00:52:56Brogan steps away from pressure.
00:52:58He is sacked.
00:52:59Back at the 40-yard line, Brad White got him.
00:53:02That is the second sack for the Colts.
00:53:06And that was a big play.
00:53:08It took them completely out of good field position,
00:53:10where they could have knocked out another first down.
00:53:12And you see on the replay right now,
00:53:14he's looking upfield to his left.
00:53:16He doesn't find it.
00:53:17He scrambles to the right.
00:53:18Now he's trying to get away,
00:53:20and Brad White, 92, makes an outstanding play.
00:53:23Takes him out of field position here.
00:53:25And right now, if the Colts could go in at the half,
00:53:287-6, they'd be in pretty good shape.
00:53:30And that missed extra point
00:53:32will be staring him right down the throat
00:53:34in the fourth quarter.
00:53:36Third down and 23.
00:53:37The ball back at the New England 40-yard line.
00:53:39Six in the secondary for the Colts.
00:53:41They look for Brogan to be throwing from the shotgun.
00:53:44Screen is drawn.
00:53:45And Morgan is back into the ballgame as a wide receiver.
00:53:49A four-man rush for the Colts.
00:53:51And we've got whistles.
00:53:52And flags drop downfield.
00:53:56A flag back at the 42-yard line in Colts territory.
00:54:02That'll cost you five more.
00:54:04Takes it to the New England 35-yard line.
00:54:07And it's third down and 28.
00:54:09What do you call a third and 28?
00:54:12You call your mother at home for a play.
00:54:14And call it to left.
00:54:16This is when the head coach on the sideline
00:54:18turns around and gets a drink of water
00:54:20because he wants the quarterback to call the play.
00:54:22This is when he says right now,
00:54:24the quarterback has all the liberty in the world
00:54:26and freedom to call the play.
00:54:28The quarterback has all the liberty in the world
00:54:30and freedom to call the play.
00:54:32And the Colts counter with seven in the secondary.
00:54:35Third and 28.
00:54:36They figure it's going to be a pass in one form or another.
00:54:39Screen is drawn.
00:54:45He's patterned complete.
00:54:47Just stepping side.
00:54:50Nesby Glasgow makes the tackle at the 44-yard line.
00:54:54A gain of 21 yards on the play.
00:54:58Steve, again, it's a bad snap,
00:55:00which takes away from his concentration.
00:55:02They're in a zone defense.
00:55:04And they're not protecting any zone.
00:55:06That's 81 right in the middle of your screen.
00:55:08See, if you're in a zone defense, as I said earlier,
00:55:10on third down and 28,
00:55:12you have to put pressure on that quarterback
00:55:15because it's too tough for those people in the secondary
00:55:18to cover all those zones.
00:55:21What?
00:55:25He goes for the corner but doesn't get it.
00:55:27He misses it by about 10 yards to the inside.
00:55:30So the Colts will have the ball at the 20-yard line.
00:55:33They kicked it for 44 yards.
00:55:35We'll bring it back out.
00:55:36The Colts will take over.
00:55:38With three minutes and 54 seconds left to go in the second quarter
00:55:42and New England leading by a point, 7-6.
00:55:47Let's check the scoreboard.
00:55:49Cleveland and Cincinnati are tied at 7-7 second quarter.
00:55:53Pittsburgh out in front of Kansas City by 6 in the second period.
00:55:58Rams running away from the Giants.
00:56:03Chicago leading Detroit as expected.
00:56:06Detroit keeps winning the big ones at home but not on the road.
00:56:10Indianapolis trailing by 1 here.
00:56:13And contact made by the Patriot defense.
00:56:17Whether or not they were drawn off,
00:56:19that was Ken Sims leaning in and making the contact.
00:56:25No, it's on Lester Williams, 72.
00:56:28That's Sims.
00:56:29It wasn't on you, Ken.
00:56:30Sorry, my mistake.
00:56:32And let's check the scoreboard.
00:56:36New Orleans by 3.
00:56:37Oakland by 2.
00:56:40New Orleans by 3 over Seattle in the second quarter.
00:56:43That's an upset working.
00:56:45Tampa Bay, there's an upset working.
00:56:47They lead by 10, but it's early second quarter.
00:56:50Green Bay trails Minnesota 7-3.
00:56:56First down and 5 at the 25-yard line.
00:57:03McMillan to the 30-yard line.
00:57:06Now, in this situation, after a touchback,
00:57:08all they have to do is place the ball on the chalk mark at the 30.
00:57:12They don't need to take a measurement following a touchback.
00:57:14And it's a first down, an automatic call.
00:57:19And we're going to give you an audio apology,
00:57:22which is kind of ironic because we're having some audio problems.
00:57:25So if you can hear us, we're sorry.
00:57:27No, no, we're sorry.
00:57:29We understand it's all being recorded.
00:57:33First down at the 30-yard line.
00:57:35Three and a half minutes left to go in the first half.
00:57:38Colts with the ball, trailing by 1-7-6.
00:57:41McMillan sweeps to the outside and picks up 5 to the 35.
00:57:45It'll be second down and 5.
00:57:47Raymond Claiborne making the stop.
00:57:49Buffalo leading Houston by a score of 10-0.
00:57:52We thought that Houston was on a roll,
00:57:54but right now they have their problems with the Buffalo Bills.
00:57:57And it's Philadelphia 14 and Atlanta nothing.
00:57:59Ron Jaworski scoring the last touchdown from just a yard out.
00:58:03So that updates all the action.
00:58:05Be sure to be with us at halftime for NFL 85.
00:58:08Bob Costas and Mod Rashad and Pete Axtell.
00:58:11They'll be updating all the scores and highlights from around the league.
00:58:14Second down and 5.
00:58:16The Colts ball at their own 35-yard line.
00:58:18So their running game is beginning to give them a little bit of field position.
00:58:22And back-to-back first downs as McMillan picks up 10 yards on the play.
00:58:27The last 5 all alone, taking Fred Marion along with him.
00:58:31First down.
00:58:33Chris Hinton is an outstanding athlete.
00:58:35This is a counter play.
00:58:3775 on the middle of your screen.
00:58:39Watch him come up, turn in a hole, make contact.
00:58:42Not too bad, but 32.
00:58:44Randy McMillan finds the hole.
00:58:46And these are two strong backs.
00:58:49You can't bring them down unless you wrap your arms
00:58:52and get both feet solid under your body.
00:58:55They're concentrating with McMillan and a one-back type offense for the Colts.
00:59:01And here he is again this time trying to get to the outside.
00:59:06But Andre Tippett anticipated the play beautifully.
00:59:10Tippett is a playmaker.
00:59:12He is a flybacker that makes things happen.
00:59:15You can see him right now.
00:59:16He's flitzing to the inside right outside Kevin Call.
00:59:20No one even blocks him.
00:59:21He comes in free and makes the tackle in the backfield.
00:59:25And he is a playmaker.
00:59:27Two-minute warning given to both benches, and we'll be back.
00:59:30The scores and highlights, what's going on today,
00:59:33and a look at the second half of the doubleheader.
00:59:36Fagel has completed 7 of 14, 86 yards.
00:59:43McMillan on the receiving end, rattles to the 40-yard line,
00:59:46which means that it all goes for a gain of 1.
00:59:4915, Raymond Claiborne making the tackle.
00:59:54This is a safe play.
00:59:5532 is just going to go out for a screen.
00:59:57He's going to look upfield, let the rush come, lay the ball off to 32,
01:00:01hope that he can cause a miss, but he doesn't.
01:00:0426, Claiborne makes the play.
01:00:06Now they need to be careful.
01:00:07If they can go in 7 to 6 down with that extra point staring him in the face,
01:00:11the Colts will have had a very fine first half.
01:00:16Curtis Dickey and Albert Bentley are the two backs in the shotgun,
01:00:20along with the quarterback Mike Fagel.
01:00:22Third down and 15.
01:00:26There's pressure.
01:00:27He's going to run for it, may make it,
01:00:30started his slide by a couple of yards too soon, or ahead of the first down.
01:00:35Another fourth down call.
01:00:38Gain of about 14.
01:00:39It's going to be a yard, maybe two yards shy of the first down.
01:00:42It will be fourth down, clock moving from 54 seconds down.
01:00:46Hunt the ball.
01:00:47Yes.
01:00:48Hunt the ball and stay in the game.
01:00:52Here's something else.
01:00:54Go into front formation and sit there and let the 32nd clock run all the way down.
01:00:58They should do that, and they may very well do that,
01:01:01unless the Pat's full of time out.
01:01:17Fair catch is called for and taken at the 13-yard line by Irving Fryer.
01:01:2219 seconds.
01:01:23That is the time remaining in the first half.
01:01:26That punt covered 35 yards.
01:01:34As we come back to action, Tony Collins, the ball carrier,
01:01:39Barry Kraus makes the tackle, just a little reminder,
01:01:42the 210th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.
01:01:46You were a Marine.
01:01:47I was a Marine Corps and trained at Camp Upshur.
01:01:50They only missed it by a day.
01:01:51My birthday was yesterday.
01:01:52Did you know that?
01:01:53I was here as well.
01:01:55You're not serving 15 years.
01:01:56Hold on.
01:01:57Closing on it, closing on it.
01:01:59So it is halftime, and the score, the New England Patriots 7
01:02:03and the Indianapolis Colts 6 in a very close first half.
01:02:08The Colts, the big underdogs, and they had some things going.
01:02:12They self-destructed a couple of times, but they capitalized on at least one of them.
01:02:15Mike Pagel completed two passes for touchdowns, one to the Colts
01:02:19and one to the Pats.
01:02:21As we said earlier, the thing that's going to hurt them more than anything else
01:02:24is that extra point.
01:02:26That will be staring them right in the face four minutes ago.
01:02:29But we said they had to stay close, and they're really staying close.
01:02:33Halftime activities will continue in a moment.
01:02:35We'll be right back after these messages from your local station.
01:02:43It is halftime.
01:02:44The score, New England 7, Indianapolis 6, missing the extra point attempt.
01:02:48That has been the change in the ballgame.
01:02:50And in the first half, Sam, we had a total of 11 punts.
01:02:53When you have 11 punts, that means the offense looks like the tango.
01:02:57One, two, three, kick.
01:02:59And the reason for that is neither quarterback, Charlie,
01:03:02is hitting those key third downs that they need to have
01:03:06to continue to move the ball up the field.
01:03:08And I would look in the second half, if they stay close, they'll go with Pagel.
01:03:12But if the thing gets away from them a little,
01:03:14look for Matt Copeland to come into the game.
01:03:17So at halftime, it is 7-6 in a closer ballgame
01:03:20than anybody thought that we would have.
01:03:22We're going to have a good second half,
01:03:24but right now let's go to NFL 85, and here is Bob Costas.
01:03:36Okay, Bob Costas back in New York along with Pete Axton.
01:03:39For the halftime show, let's get right to the scoreboard.
01:03:41Cincinnati leads Cleveland in a game many of you are watching, 14-7,
01:03:45the Battle of Ohio, and the Bengals have won
01:03:48the last three consecutive games they've played against the Browns.
01:03:51As we take a look at some of the highlights,
01:03:53Sam Weiser of the Bengals realizes that 4-5 is good enough in the AFC Central.
01:03:57Everybody has that record, so they're all in playoff contention.
01:04:00Boomer Esiason gets the Bengals on the board first.
01:04:02The catch by James Brooks, he tumbles over the flag.
01:04:05It's good for an 8-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
01:04:08But Bernie Kozar comes back to tie it on this pass to Ernest Beiner,
01:04:12takes the tackle and turns it into a 27-yard touchdown play.
01:04:15Now just before the end of the half, Charles Alexander scores from the 1 for Cincinnati,
01:04:19and they lead it 14-7 at halftime.
01:04:21Elsewhere, Pittsburgh playing at Kansas City.
01:04:24They haven't reached the half yet.
01:04:25The Chiefs are in danger of losing their sixth in a row.
01:04:2827-14 in favor of Pittsburgh.
01:04:30The score there, an unhappy John McEvick.
01:04:33The season began so promisingly for the Chiefs,
01:04:36but they have dropped five in a row since then.
01:04:38They take the lead early here.
01:04:40First-service interception for Deron Cherry.
01:04:42David Woodley under pressure, threw it right into his lap.
01:04:45The sixth interception of the year for Cherry.
01:04:47He brings it back 47 yards for a touchdown.
01:04:497-0 Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
01:04:51But David Woodley, in place of the injured Mark Malone,
01:04:53finds the veteran John Stallworth with a 13-yarder,
01:04:56and the game is even up at 7.
01:04:58After a couple of field goals by Gary Anderson, the Chiefs come back.
01:05:01It's Kenny to the rookie Jeff Smith out of Nebraska.
01:05:04Nice run, breaks, tackles, takes it in,
01:05:06and following the conversion, the Chiefs have the lead at 14-13.
01:05:11But Lewis Lips scores his second punt return touchdown of the year.
01:05:15He's also caught eight TD passes, so 10 for the season,
01:05:18as he brings Jim Arnold's kick back 71 yards for a touchdown.
01:05:22And then moments ago, Walter Abercrombie scored from the two.
01:05:25Pittsburgh builds their lead to 27-14 at Kansas City.
01:05:29The Rams and the Giants at the Meadowlands.
01:05:31Eric Dickerson did start, scored a touchdown from the one.
01:05:34Lanceford has a couple of field goals.
01:05:35The Rams at 8-1 with the underdogs in this game coming in.
01:05:39John Robinson keeps saying they don't get enough respect.
01:05:41They lead the Giants 13-0.
01:05:43The Bears and the Lions.
01:05:45It's 14-0 Bears late in the second quarter.
01:05:47Steve Fuller in place of the injured Jim McMahon
01:05:50on a keeper for a one-yard touchdown.
01:05:52Calvin Thomas has a seven-yard touchdown run.
01:05:55Refrigerator Perry has forced an interception by rushing the quarterback
01:05:59and also has been credited with a sack.
01:06:01He's been in for a few plays on offense.
01:06:03He has blocked, but he hasn't handled the ball.
01:06:05The Seahawks lead the Saints in a game some of you are watching at halftime.
01:06:09The score there is 7-3.
01:06:10The Seahawks touchdown Kurt Warner, a one-yard run.
01:06:13Tampa Bay, 0-9 for the season.
01:06:15The fourth time in their history they've begun a campaign at 0-9,
01:06:18leading the Cardinals 10-0.
01:06:20That game has reached halftime.
01:06:22The Cardinals coming off the Monday night win at home over Dallas,
01:06:25and many people warned them about this game,
01:06:27and they trail it 10-zip at the half.
01:06:29New England and Indianapolis.
01:06:30It's a 7-6 score there.
01:06:32New England is just a game back of the Jets in the AFC East Race
01:06:36and Raymond Berry's club in front by a point against Indianapolis at halftime.
01:06:41The Colts take the lead in the second quarter on a razzle-dazzle play.
01:06:45Their new head coach Rod Dauhauer likes to do this,
01:06:47and Mike Pagel off the flea flicker finds a wide-open Pat Beach for the touchdown.
01:06:52However, Pagel is not so fortunate on this one.
01:06:55Fred Marion picks off the deflected pass.
01:06:57Good return.
01:06:58Brings it back 22 yards to the Indianapolis 24-yard line,
01:07:02and it sets up a play you'll see coming up next.
01:07:05A 19-yard touchdown pass off the play-action fake by Grogan.
01:07:08He throws for Stanley Morgan.
01:07:10The veteran makes a nice shoot-top catch,
01:07:12and the extra point makes it 7-6.
01:07:15Indianapolis had missed the conversion following their touchdown,
01:07:18so that's the difference in the ballgame right now.
01:07:20Same score at Minnesota, and they have not yet reached halftime.
01:07:23In that one, the Vikings lead Green Bay 7-6.
01:07:25Jim Zorn was ineffective.
01:07:26Lynn Dickey has come on in relief of him for the Packers.
01:07:29Buffalo and Houston.
01:07:31The Bills lead it in a cold rain at Buffalo 10-0,
01:07:34despite the fact that Bruce Matheson,
01:07:36starting today at quarterback for Vince Ferragamo,
01:07:38has been sacked five times.
01:07:39Warren Moon is also having all kinds of difficulty for the Oilers,
01:07:43who have won three in a row to get back into that AFC Central race at 4-5,
01:07:46but they're trailing here 10-0.
01:07:48Philadelphia leads Atlanta.
01:07:49The score in that one is 14-0.
01:07:51The Eagles scored twice in the second quarter
01:07:53after a scoreless first period.
01:07:55Philadelphia still doesn't have a first-quarter touchdown all season.
01:07:58Now, the thoughts of Mr. Axton.
01:08:00Well, you know, we've been celebrating the refrigerators
01:08:02as the world's largest hero in football.
01:08:04Look at the poor, diminutive goat in Cleveland.
01:08:08Frank Minifield got an interference penalty to set up Cincinnati's final touchdown
01:08:12right at the end of the half.
01:08:13You might remember when they lost to Pittsburgh in the final seconds,
01:08:16it was another Minifield interference penalty.
01:08:18The Snakebite Award for today to Frank.
01:08:21All right, Axton, a tragic note in hockey.
01:08:23The Swedish goalie Peli Lindbergh, who plays for the Philadelphia Flyers,
01:08:27won the Vezina Trophy last year, took them to the finals against Edmonton.
01:08:30Involved in a car crash early this morning,
01:08:32doctors say that right now he is brain dead,
01:08:35and that is the word from the Philadelphia Flyers
01:08:38on the condition of Peli Lindbergh.
01:08:40And we'll continue after these messages from your local stations.
