00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston Betts. Today I'm out on the streets of Manchester talking to people about prisons.
00:05And that's because in recent years a lot of tough decisions have had to be made, mainly regarding overpopulation in prisons,
00:11places reaching their capacity. As a result, some offenders have had to be let out early
00:16and we want to know if people are in favour of that as a decision or whether it's something that worries them.
00:21No, I'd say it makes me nervous. I mean, I understand why they're doing it because the alternatives are full prisons
00:26with nowhere criminals to be able to move into and the complete collapse of the judicial system.
00:33Yeah, I'm guessing there's a way, a system in place where the least dangerous people are probably let out first, I hope.
00:40So I guess if someone's job is to, you know, take charge, I trust them.
00:45Even if you had it working well, there are still dangers in release. So, yeah, it does make me nervous,
00:50but I don't think they have a lot of choice. You don't build prisons overnight.
00:54It was in action over 13 years.
