Elephant spotted in Senegalese park gives hope to conservationists

00:00The rare sighting in a remote area of Neocolokoba National Park has brought hope to conservationists.
00:07Senegal's elephant population has been reduced to just a handful due to decades of poaching, deforestation and habitat encroachment.
00:16We have conducted extensive surveys in the park since 2021 now, covering the entire park with camera traps.
00:25And so far we only have evidence of one single elephant.
00:29But there have been rumors, most recently from a truck driver crossing the park.
00:35There's a national highway bisecting it.
00:37And this truck driver, he said he saw three elephants and he's sure that that was elephants.
00:42And so there is a little hope that we have a tiny group of elephants left in the park.
