00:00More than two years after seizing power in a coup, Gabon's president, Brice Ogilien-Gemma, has reached another political milestone.
00:10The former general launching a political party Saturday, calling it the Democratic Union of Builders, or UDP.
00:17In a statement, the party says it reflects a shared desire to rebuild Gabon, with a mission to unite, transform and elevate the country.
00:25The creation of UDP strengthens Ogilien's hold on power.
00:29He won April's presidential election with nearly 95% of the vote.
00:34That followed the August 2023 coup, when Ogilien overthrew President Ali Bongo.
00:40Bongo's removal ended 56 years of rule by the same family.
00:44His father, Omar Bongo, led the country for more than four decades before Ali took over.
00:49With the launch of UDP, Ogilien moves closer to cementing his position at the centre of Gabon's politics, becoming the architect of a new political order.
