Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), May 24, 2025 (ANI): Rain lashed several parts of the country as Monsoon arrives in India. On this early onset of South West Monsoon in Kerala, IMD Scientist Neetha K Gopal said, "Monsoon onset took place today, 24th May, and it is much ahead of its schedule. Normally, the standard monsoon arrival date in Kerala is 1st June, but IMD has already forecasted that the monsoon will reach early this year. The official forecast was 27th May with a model of 4 days. That means the monsoon could reach 4 days before 27th May or 4 days after 27th May. So, our forecast has also come true today."
00:00Yes, monsoon onset took place today, 24th May, 25th May 2025, and it is much ahead of its schedule.
00:12And normally monsoon, the standard date of monsoon arrival in Kerala is 1st of June,
00:18but IMD has already forecast that monsoon will be reaching early.
00:23The forecast was, official forecast was 27th of May, with a model error of 4 days,
00:29that means the monsoon could reach 4 days before 27th of May or 4 days after 27th of May.
00:38So as per our forecast, our forecast also has come true today.
00:43There are 4 criteria which we follow for declaring the onset of monsoon.
00:49So all 4 criteria met today, and we officially announced the arrival of monsoon.
00:57So monsoon has covered the end of Kerala and some parts of our neighbouring states, Karnata and Tamil Nadu also.
01:05So also red alert and orange alert, can we be covered in many states?
01:09Yes, yes, yes.
01:11Monsoon onset is a very vigorous one this year.
01:15Monsoon current is very strong.
01:17Its depth is also very high, very good, up to around 6 km height in the vertical.
01:26We can see westerly winds, and the strength is very, very good.
01:29So generally, onset phase, at least like in the recent past, we are not seeing this kind of a vigorous onset.
01:37And consequent to that, we are expecting some good spell of rainfall.
01:43That is why the end of Kerala is under warning, and this today, tomorrow, and the day after, this three days, Kerala is under either orange warning or red warning.
01:55So that means consecutive three days, we will be experiencing very good rainfall, so that warrants extra caution also.
02:05Because three days continuous rain, that too, in the higher categories, will have a compound impact.
02:11So it needs to be monitored, and everyone should follow the official advisories and the warnings of state government as well as the IMD.
02:22Is there any warning of the storm or any other warning?
02:27Yeah, other than that, fisherman warning is in place, and we have issued warning for strong winds also.
02:35And again, Ingo has issued some warning for the swell surge also.
02:41So that means, like, you know, we are in every, you know, in all aspects, like, you know, we need to be careful about this particular phase of, or this week, we can say.
02:54So rainfall is there, wind will be there.
02:56Then all sectors, actually, all sectors are, like, you know, under some or the other kind of warning.
03:03So what would be the nature of this monsoon can expect?
03:13Generally, like, the onset date and that activity during that onset phase doesn't really define the remaining part of the monsoon.
03:25But it has seen that this early, the years when we had early onset generally received a good amount of rainfall, above normal rainfall.
03:34So, and then IMD's forecast is also for an above normal rainfall this year, monsoon this year.
03:40So maybe we can expect that forecast also will come true.
