00:00:00In a world where the IT thing is always changing, sometimes you need a tour guide or two to help you find your way to Pop Culture's Paradise.
00:00:07If you find yourself reminiscing or in need of a good recommendation, these two have you covered.
00:00:12And now, here's your hosts, Joey and Jeff!
00:00:21Welcome back to Pop Culture Paradise, my name is Joe.
00:00:25What's up, I'm Jeff.
00:00:26And today, we're talking about ABC's TGIF.
00:00:31Hey dudes, put your seats in their full upright positions, TGIF is ready to fly!
00:00:35The very first cinematic universe.
00:00:38You know what I'm talking about here today, Jeff?
00:00:40TGIF for me, it was, if you're a 90s kid, it was must-see TV.
00:00:45It was all of your favorite shows stacked together in what, like a two, three hour block, Joe?
00:00:50Just back to back to back.
00:00:51You could not miss it, no matter what.
00:00:54And these were like the perfect comedies.
00:00:56They were, they're family friendly, but like, your parents would hang around.
00:01:00You know, you'd go home, you're done for the week, everything you need to do from school is over.
00:01:05Get the whole weekend ahead of you, and you're just down to laugh all night, right?
00:01:09One of the things that I remember the most, I can't remember which show it was, it might have been, it might have been Family Matters.
00:01:15One of the shows did the special 3D, maybe it was like the whole, like, the whole night was like 3D, I can't remember exactly.
00:01:23But we couldn't get the glasses anywhere.
00:01:25We couldn't find them, me and my pal Keith, his mom drove us around town all day.
00:01:29We couldn't find the special glasses you needed, so she tried to make them.
00:01:34Needless to say, the effort was admirable, but the experience was less than desirable.
00:01:41As soon as you see this logo, put on your 3D glasses for more 3D Home Improvement coming right up.
00:01:45You know, I actually remember this, because that's, I think, this one wasn't quite TGIF, but it's that same ABC block.
00:01:52It was a Home Improvement.
00:01:54Okay, get those 3D glasses ready now for all new Home Improvement in 3D next.
00:02:08The Drew Carey Show, I believe.
00:02:11And I remember getting the glasses at, like, from Doritos at like a Walmart or something.
00:02:18And they just had it set to the side, and you're just like, all right.
00:02:22I don't know how 3D on TV is gonna work, but this is just gonna change everything.
00:02:26Even if he had the right glasses, it wasn't that amazing of an experience.
00:02:30But in that moment, it was, I cannot miss this.
00:02:34Like, this is a life-changing event.
00:02:37And then you go back to watch those episodes of Syndication, and they're all like,
00:02:41Oh!
00:02:44Oh, yeah.
00:02:44We got the bubble machine, boo!
00:02:48Spin City.
00:02:49Spin City is the other one that has the 3D.
00:02:52Here's a little taste of how they built up a TGIF.
00:02:55What you would look forward to.
00:02:58Tomorrow, you won't see this guy.
00:03:00But there's no mystery where the fun is.
00:03:02I got them.
00:03:03Reef fesses up a jungle cat.
00:03:04It's an all-new...
00:03:05Yeah, he does.
00:03:06Ah, I love you.
00:03:08Ah, I love him.
00:03:13Now, are you worried that the pressures of a big family is coming...
00:03:17It's just coming to a head on Step by Step.
00:03:19Dude, I love the Lamberts.
00:03:21What a great family.
00:03:22Like, you know what these shows did, as sad as it might be,
00:03:26I don't want to bring down the episode,
00:03:28but it made me realize just how dysfunctional my family actually was.
00:03:33And this is what I wanted, what was on this TV show.
00:03:36Maybe that's why I'm still drawn to it to this day.
00:03:38I don't know, man.
00:03:39It's the very definition of comfort food, isn't it?
00:03:41Because you're looking at him and you're like,
00:03:43I feel part of this family.
00:03:45Like, all right, sure, if I was part of that family,
00:03:48I probably also would want to, you know, strangle Urkel.
00:03:51Right.
00:03:51But in some ways, I'm like, you know what?
00:03:53Urkel's presence is just...
00:03:55Well, if I'm Carl, it's not calming.
00:03:58Yeah.
00:03:58But for me, I don't have to deal with the fallout from Urkel blowing out my ceiling.
00:04:02So Urkel's a happy memory to me.
00:04:05Oh, I love him, dude.
00:04:06He was just a phenomenon everywhere, everywhere.
00:04:10And I know you have a Urkel doll.
00:04:12I do have the Urkel doll.
00:04:14I also got the Punky Brewster doll.
00:04:16And I got way too many dolls for a grown man.
00:04:19So TGIF was a fixture from the 80s to the 90s.
00:04:22And unfortunately, it went away.
00:04:25I saved this phrase, TGIF.
00:04:27Jeff, do you actually know what TGIF stands for?
00:04:29Thank God it's Friday.
00:04:31From what I found from my research,
00:04:33I don't think it always meant thank God it's Friday.
00:04:36Really?
00:04:36What else could it possibly mean?
00:04:38Well, let's go to the clip.
00:04:40Hi, welcome to TGIF.
00:04:42And welcome to TGIF.
00:04:43That means thank goodness it's funny.
00:04:46TGIF.
00:04:47It's just another way to say TV is good.
00:04:50You'll know why we say thank goodness it's funny right after this.
00:04:53Thank goodness it's Friday.
00:04:55Thank, thank, thank God it's Friday.
00:04:57No, they're saying thank goodness it's funny.
00:05:00Oh, I could have sworn they were saying Friday.
00:05:02And then somebody said something about TV.
00:05:05That was a stretch.
00:05:06So as our play-by-play guy, if you didn't grow up in this era,
00:05:10can you explain what that night was?
00:05:13How do you prepare for a TGIF night?
00:05:16It was the best, man.
00:05:17You would definitely be loaded up on the snacks.
00:05:21Pizza was a must usually.
00:05:23It was something that you never watched alone
00:05:26because it was always an event.
00:05:28It felt like every single Friday was like this big frickin' deal.
00:05:32And you would look forward to it all week.
00:05:35You'd get there, you'd have the snacks, you'd have the food,
00:05:37you'd have the special glasses if you needed them
00:05:40for that particular weekend, whatever.
00:05:43But the best way I can describe it
00:05:45is it was just, it was the best feeling in the world.
00:05:48It happened every single week.
00:05:50Here's a little montage I put together of just the hype.
00:05:54This is why we got excited.
00:05:56Hi, I'm Cory Matthews of Boy Meets World.
00:05:58Welcome to the Christmas edition of TGIF.
00:06:01It's Friday night, and the mood is right.
00:06:06Yes, it is.
00:06:07So I'll show you how it's done, TGIF.
00:06:11Hey, there's no better way to spend Friday night
00:06:13than watching TGIF with your family.
00:06:15Notice how the phone never rings during TGIF.
00:06:18Well, that's because everybody's watching ABC.
00:06:20We're just getting ready for a night of TGIF.
00:06:22And that's what you're talking about.
00:06:23So why don't you lock your TVs to ABC and throw the remote away.
00:06:26It's Friday night.
00:06:27Locking your TVs away.
00:06:30Bring your popcorn.
00:06:32Boy Meets World's up next.
00:06:34Okay, so hold on.
00:06:35What was the, I know it was probably changing a lot,
00:06:39but what to you was like the premier lineup?
00:06:42Because if you're like, for real,
00:06:45this is Friday night television.
00:06:47This is crazy to me.
00:06:49Okay, so you got Family Matters.
00:06:51You got Boy Meets World.
00:06:54What was like the premier lineup?
00:06:57Because I'm seeing all these shows,
00:06:59but how were they actually scheduled?
00:07:01So it was constantly changing.
00:07:03I think by the time I got into it was 94, 95, 96.
00:07:09So I think by that time, step-by-step,
00:07:11Family Matters were already transitioning off
00:07:15and Full House had been done by that point.
00:07:19You weren't getting Perfect Strangers.
00:07:21To me, it's Prime, Boy Meets World,
00:07:24Sabrina the Teenage Witch,
00:07:27and I kind of just think of the other stuff
00:07:29that they kind of put around it.
00:07:30So those shows like Teen Angel,
00:07:32which I'll bring up here.
00:07:34They tried with this show called You Wish,
00:07:35which was awful.
00:07:37Two of a Kind with the Olsen twins coming back.
00:07:40Congratulations.
00:07:41TGIF. We'll get you through it.
00:07:44Friends don't let friends miss a moment of TGIF.
00:07:47What a great night of TGIF.
00:07:50That's so Raven was on there?
00:07:52Oh, right.
00:07:53Yep.
00:07:54You know, I can't believe you stood me up.
00:07:55I thought that was only on Disney Channel.
00:07:58She was...
00:07:59Okay, I'll be there in 10 minutes.
00:08:00Bye.
00:08:02Why'd you let him off so easy?
00:08:03He had a good excuse.
00:08:04He was watching TGIF.
00:08:06Would that happen in real life?
00:08:08Yes, always a valid excuse.
00:08:09Try it on your girlfriend.
00:08:11Try it on your job.
00:08:14It was TGIF.
00:08:15I couldn't make it.
00:08:16I'm sorry.
00:08:17Oh, well, I understand.
00:08:18It's completely fine.
00:08:19Wait, was that really That's So Raven?
00:08:21That was only on Disney Channel.
00:08:23That must have been some other show.
00:08:24What was that?
00:08:26That was Hanging with Mr.
00:08:27Cooper.
00:08:28Okay, Mr.
00:08:29Cooper, right, right, right.
00:08:30That was a good one too.
00:08:32And as we will show you today, all of these shows share the same cinematic
00:08:36universe and a lot of the times the success of one show was brought over to
00:08:41help take another show and make it popular.
00:08:44I have really no idea what to expect or...
00:08:49Okay, I've heard of that, like the MCU universe, you know, the Marvel, the
00:08:53Monster Universe, the DC, but never TGIF.
00:08:58You're going to have to really sell me on this, man.
00:09:00So you're a big fan of Iron Man and you just love the guy and he's kind of
00:09:06the central figure to how all these Avenger movies take place, right?
00:09:10Oh, absolutely.
00:09:12Without the first Iron Man movie in 2008, which I didn't see for many years
00:09:16after the fact because I just kind of was never really into it.
00:09:20I always thought Spider-Man was cool, but I wasn't into comic books.
00:09:24But once I like saw who Tony Stark was, I was like, this guy is cool.
00:09:29Like I need to see what this is all about and then sucked in man.
00:09:33Consider, Balky from Perfect Strangers are Tony Stark.
00:09:37The entire cinematic universe almost centers around Balky from Perfect
00:09:43Strangers. Okay, and he was the guy with the weird accent, right?
00:09:49He was the guy with the weird accent.
00:09:51Don't be ridiculous.
00:09:53Yeah.
00:09:53All right.
00:09:53I don't know where you're going with this, but I'm here for the ride.
00:09:57Don't be ridiculous.
00:09:59So we did mention food and TGIF knew it.
00:10:02I honestly think that they were probably in line with these companies to push
00:10:06product. Like maybe they got a little side Pizza Hut money.
00:10:09The pizza chains were like, listen, the kids are home.
00:10:12The kids are going to beg their parents to get something to eat.
00:10:15And you know what?
00:10:16Let's remind them.
00:10:17They're hungry while watching this show.
00:10:19Oh, yeah.
00:10:20Hey everybody and welcome to TGIF.
00:10:23Oh, I prepared a special snack for every show.
00:10:25Now tonight on Full House.
00:10:26I take Stephanie to a mother-daughter slumber party.
00:10:28So slumber party food cookies and hot chocolate.
00:10:31Tyler, pass the chips.
00:10:33You women are a mean TGIF party.
00:10:35Yeah, I'm having such a good time.
00:10:36I almost don't mind being stood up.
00:10:38Tyler's going to get canceled.
00:10:39That's not hanging with Mr.
00:10:40Cooper.
00:10:41Tell me, what's cotton?
00:10:42She's just maybe that's sister sister.
00:10:45No, that's not Tia and Tamara.
00:10:47I don't know what that show is, but it was on TGIF.
00:10:49How do I not know what it is?
00:10:51I definitely know the last one.
00:10:53Cody is obviously a well-renowned chef.
00:10:56I was totally remember how often Cody was cooking on step-by-step.
00:11:00That was just his thing.
00:11:01Oh, yeah.
00:11:01We totally trust him to cook me up a little something in his van.
00:11:06Not only would you watch your favorite shows, but they would push outside
00:11:10events.
00:11:10Maybe concert footage from the biggest boy band act at the time or a hit
00:11:16movie and you get some previews.
00:11:18I'll be right back on TGIF where anything can happen and usually does
00:11:26from Sabrina's magical finger to Marty's mischievous mayhem and now
00:11:31showing you the magic of love or great movie for TGIF and tonight.
00:11:37It's the way they would play a movie during TGIF for a holiday special.
00:11:41They show clips of a new movie.
00:11:43I have Hanson show up with the Backstreet Boys could host a okay.
00:11:49What you got to just think that's just brilliant marketing.
00:11:51You like it's pretty much what we call not that I call but what what is
00:11:56called your fishing in a barrel with dynamite?
00:12:00Like your entire demographic is in this one place at this one time.
00:12:06Boom, show them what you want them to buy.
00:12:09It's just it's fishing with dynamite.
00:12:11It really is because you got to think what is 70 60% of that audience is
00:12:17girls from 9 to 13 9 to 14 at the time.
00:12:21I was like, gee, do you think they want to know about the Backstreet Boys
00:12:24latest project or Hanson?
00:12:27Nancy was massive and flubber.
00:12:29That was a sweet movie.
00:12:31So I don't know man.
00:12:33I know I'm significantly older now than when I watched TGIF but everything
00:12:37in that was cool to me now on these nights.
00:12:40They would get somebody from one of these shows to host and they this
00:12:45isn't what I'm saying is part of the cinematic Universe, but this is
00:12:48them all playing nice together.
00:12:50So you feel like you know what not only is TGIF family shows but all
00:12:55the TGIF shows are sort of family with each other.
00:12:58They're all pals here.
00:13:00Yeah, it's kind of the the approach of you know, one ship raises all
00:13:05sails, right?
00:13:05If one show is doing well, then the next one the next one boom full
00:13:10house.
00:13:10Let me tell you about this big episode.
00:13:12You see Stephanie has to go to a psychiatrist because step-by-step is
00:13:15coming up.
00:13:16What tonight the results are in on the career placement test.
00:13:19Don't miss family matters.
00:13:25What's cooking next on step-by-step good thing.
00:13:28We're watching that's so meta.
00:13:29It's so cool to continue with step-by-step.
00:13:31Boy meets world is next on ABC.
00:13:33I mean, and we always watch that together.
00:13:35It's time for our favorite part of TGIF step-by-step sister.
00:13:39Oh, cut her off.
00:13:42I love it.
00:13:43I bet you're wondering where the rest of the full house family is.
00:13:50Well, I gave him the night off because I can do this with my cartoon
00:13:53friends.
00:13:54What's up on full house bugs?
00:13:56DJ's up to a whiskers and hot water.
00:13:59Missing full house.
00:14:01That is great.
00:14:05The premiere of my favorite show full house.
00:14:08Are they in character talking about the other shows or are these the
00:14:14actors talking about these other shows?
00:14:17I don't know.
00:14:17They're they're totally in their character and they're just they're
00:14:22hyping up the other shows and they're in their same block.
00:14:25Absolutely, but all that seemed like my favorite show.
00:14:30So in this universe, are they like a reality show where it's like Kim
00:14:36Kardashian would go on talking about keeping up with their Kardashians
00:14:39as a real thing that happened, but also a TV show.
00:14:43So do they have film crews in their house filming what happened?
00:14:49I'm about to fall out of my chair.
00:14:50I have no idea what you're talking about right now.
00:14:53Let's put it like this.
00:14:54If Carl Winslow is saying, all right, you're going to check out what
00:14:59happens on family matters, but he's in characters.
00:15:02Carl Winslow is family matters a reality show where they let people
00:15:06into the Winslow house to see the crazy antics that happened there and
00:15:10now he's promoting their show about them.
00:15:14But it just happens to be filmed like a sitcom.
00:15:17Yeah.
00:15:19You know what?
00:15:20No, I don't think so.
00:15:22I don't think so at all.
00:15:23I think you're reaching super far.
00:15:25Well, then how is he introducing the show?
00:15:27He shouldn't know about these shows.
00:15:29Of course, he should know about the show.
00:15:31He's in the show, but if he was in the show, he wouldn't know about the
00:15:34show unless it was a show within a show about his family that he knows
00:15:39about, but if he's watching it on TV, how does he not know that he's part
00:15:42of a show?
00:15:43So here you go.
00:15:44Here's what makes it even more confusing.
00:15:46That's not saying Julia White here to talk about these shows.
00:15:50It's Urkel here.
00:15:51Oh, no.
00:15:52He's in his full shtick.
00:15:54Steve Urkel here for a fun-filled night of laughs.
00:15:57Full house kicks off the night when DJ meets a babysitter's worst
00:16:01nightmare.
00:16:02Joey here.
00:16:03Next up.
00:16:03My buddy's buddy.
00:16:04His first smash video.
00:16:06Stephanie Catterback again in just in time for just what the hell's going
00:16:10on.
00:16:13Welcome back to TGIF.
00:16:15Everybody.
00:16:15Bo Vinkle the Moose here sitting in for my friend.
00:16:18Joey.
00:16:18Carl Winslow here on duty for TGIF.
00:16:21Tonight.
00:16:21My little girl DJ starts junior high school.
00:16:25Don't fly away.
00:16:26Teen Angel is next on ABC.
00:16:29What the hell is Teen Angel?
00:16:31Which means our show Full House is coming up next.
00:16:34Oh, I wouldn't want to mess with that Michelle.
00:16:36She is one macho mama.
00:16:37Oh, yeah.
00:16:38Yep.
00:16:39I move in.
00:16:41Who is this little boy again?
00:16:43He's from a show called Going Places.
00:16:45Guess it never won.
00:16:46Nowhere.
00:16:46I never saw it.
00:16:48It didn't go any places.
00:16:49To do the right thing.
00:16:50Sounds hot.
00:16:51Let's roll it.
00:16:52Oh, this kid learns fast.
00:16:54I'm with Mr.
00:16:55Cooper and this is my daughter Nicole and tonight.
00:16:58It's girls night.
00:16:59Where's Mr.
00:16:59Cooper?
00:17:01It's like girls night.
00:17:02He's the absent father.
00:17:04It's unacceptable.
00:17:07There he is.
00:17:08Bottoms up.
00:17:10Joe, please.
00:17:12Not only enlighten me but enlighten us.
00:17:14How does this all play out into a cinematic Universe?
00:17:19I might regret regret asking you this but how does this all
00:17:21play out?
00:17:22So you remember the mom on Family Matters?
00:17:25Harriet.
00:17:25Yeah, of course.
00:17:27So Harriet used to work with Balky and Larry on Perfect
00:17:31Strangers.
00:17:32She used to run the elevator at the place they used to work
00:17:35at.
00:17:36I know that and Carl was also in there too as a cop.
00:17:40She lasted from season 3 to season 4.
00:17:43So here's her first introduction on Perfect Strangers.
00:17:46You better be careful.
00:17:47One mistake and you gone.
00:17:50Oh, thank you.
00:17:51Thank you for the warning.
00:17:53Oh, I'm sorry.
00:17:54Balky Bartokomus.
00:17:55This is Harriet Winslow.
00:17:57Nice to meet you.
00:17:58How do you do?
00:17:59Harriet runs the elevator here.
00:18:01Must be a lot of ups and downs.
00:18:04Waiting for it.
00:18:10So then Harriet had the spinoff and what was the name of
00:18:13that spinoff?
00:18:14Family Matters.
00:18:18This is the final appearance on Harriet on Perfect Strangers.
00:18:23Final appearance as Harriet.
00:18:26What they did was a little program called ABC's Comedy
00:18:29Sneak Peek and on ABC's Comedy Sneak Peek.
00:18:32It was hosted by Larry and Balky and they explained what
00:18:35happened to Harriet.
00:18:36I am waiting for Harriet.
00:18:38I want to use the elevator.
00:18:40Well, Harriet doesn't run the elevator anymore.
00:18:42She don't know.
00:18:44Well, whoever they got to replace her is late.
00:18:49The elevator runs by itself.
00:18:51You remember when the elevators needed help being a run?
00:18:54No, I never.
00:18:55I don't at all.
00:18:56Neither do I.
00:18:58No, Harriet used to run the elevator, but now she's got
00:19:00her own show.
00:19:01It's called Family Matters.
00:19:03Ah.
00:19:06Bam.
00:19:06Watch that.
00:19:07Sneak Peek.
00:19:07Next is the premiere of a great new show, Family Matters.
00:19:10No.
00:19:11Yes.
00:19:11You've got it, dude.
00:19:12It stars the elevator operator from Perfect Strangers.
00:19:14Wow.
00:19:15Good thing I don't have a date.
00:19:17All right.
00:19:18Joey Glaston doesn't have a date.
00:19:19So he's just going to stay at home and watch that Family
00:19:21Matters premiere.
00:19:23I remember watching the reunion of Family Matters.
00:19:26It happened just a few years back and it was pretty cool
00:19:30seeing them all back together.
00:19:32And that's when I finally learned the story of why the
00:19:36actress who played Harriet got her own show and what the
00:19:39whole agenda was behind it and how the show was probably
00:19:43not going to make it until a certain nerd walked through
00:19:46the doors.
00:19:46From there, Perfect Strangers was the thing to try to keep
00:19:49Family Matters afloat until, like you said, Urkel showed
00:19:52up. Right.
00:19:53Harriet's family was really nice.
00:19:54Will I ever get to see them again?
00:19:56Every Friday night, right before Perfect Strangers.
00:19:58Well, well, Cousin, I want to tell the whole building about
00:20:01Family Matters.
00:20:03Too bad I can't use the elevator.
00:20:05And Family Matters is up next.
00:20:06This week, Laura accidentally sells her grandma's favorite
00:20:08quilt at a garage sale.
00:20:10Oh, I remember that one.
00:20:11It was a tearjerker.
00:20:12You make me laugh.
00:20:13Yeah, and that Belky's such a fashion plague.
00:20:15I wonder where he gets his clothes. Pay attention, Steve.
00:20:17Yeah, this is on next.
00:20:18So what can you tell us about our next show, Family Matters?
00:20:22Family Matters, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, it was
00:20:24based in Chicago, was it?
00:20:26That's where the family was from. The Winslow family, Harriet
00:20:30the mother, Carl the cop, his dad.
00:20:34Gosh, you had you had Laura who was Steve Urkel's love
00:20:38interest, Urkel's the neighbor.
00:20:40It's just, it's kind of, it's kind of just your...
00:20:45I don't know.
00:20:45Think of kind of like a step-by-step almost, aside from the,
00:20:49you know, splitting families that join each other.
00:20:52It's just kind of like a black family version of that and
00:20:56you get all the hijinks with Urkel.
00:20:58You get all the serious topics.
00:21:00Like, you know, those really sit down.
00:21:02We need to talk conversations with the adults. You get all
00:21:04that stuff.
00:21:05Yeah, what was great about this thing is you didn't even
00:21:07really even look at it like the black family or anything
00:21:10else like that.
00:21:11You just kind of looked at it like, oh, this is just another
00:21:13TGIF family. They're funny.
00:21:16They got funny hijinks.
00:21:18You know, Carl Winslow is so memorable. Urkel is, you know,
00:21:23you still get Urkel talk even to this day.
00:21:26Yeah, like Jaleel White is never just not going to be Urkel.
00:21:30No, I think he kind of always has to be and I think you
00:21:33made up the, you brought up a good point about it being
00:21:37a black sitcom.
00:21:39And when you're a kid, you have no idea.
00:21:41You're just like, oh, this is just another funny show.
00:21:43Like these Carl's great, Urkel's great.
00:21:46But now as an adult, you can kind of look back and be like
00:21:49we didn't really have a lot of those.
00:21:52So this was kind of like the first one that I was ever
00:21:54introduced to besides the Cosby's, of course.
00:21:57And I think at this boy, we're better off running with
00:22:00Carl than we are Bill.
00:22:12I just didn't know he'd be a brother.
00:22:14I know.
00:22:15Try getting by Friday.
00:22:20Try getting by Friday.
00:22:21Something new coming to TGIF.
00:22:24This is my husband, Carl.
00:22:25Say hello, Carl.
00:22:26Hello.
00:22:27And this is Carl's mother, Mother Winslow.
00:22:29Say hello.
00:22:29Well, how do you do?
00:22:30It's a real pleasure to meet you.
00:22:32I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you about
00:22:34my world travel.
00:22:35Mother, we don't have enough time.
00:22:37We need to talk about the show.
00:22:39These are our children, Eddie, Laura, and Judy.
00:22:41Hi.
00:22:42Hi.
00:22:43She was like a theater actress, wasn't she?
00:22:46Which one?
00:22:47The grandma?
00:22:50I believe so.
00:22:52Yeah, she was like OG.
00:22:53So Family Matters is probably best known for the key to
00:22:57the rest of the cinematic universe and his name was
00:23:01Steve Urkel.
00:23:02And how big was Steve Urkel?
00:23:04Steve Urkel was legitimately a 90s pop culture
00:23:08phenomenon, like to the 10th degree.
00:23:11This guy had posters.
00:23:12He had cereal.
00:23:13He had action figures.
00:23:14He had lunch boxes.
00:23:16Like, you could not escape the suspenders and the glasses
00:23:21and the dance.
00:23:23The dance.
00:23:24Do the Urkel.
00:23:25He was literally just, he was like the antithesis of a pop
00:23:30culture phenomenon.
00:23:31It was everywhere.
00:23:33Tuesday nights on ATV.
00:23:38Oh my goodness.
00:23:43Family Matters Tuesday at 830 on ATV.
00:23:46How many things did he set on fire?
00:23:50There he is.
00:23:50See?
00:23:52The younger Urkel is what was really the phenom, the
00:23:56phenomenon.
00:23:57You know what I mean?
00:23:59It really was because as he got older, it was sort of weird
00:24:02that he was still acting like that.
00:24:03Right.
00:24:04At this age, he's still endearing.
00:24:06Oh, yeah.
00:24:08I'm wearing you down and he did.
00:24:12Oh, yeah.
00:24:28That is just ridiculous.
00:24:31Literally anything that you could possibly print his face
00:24:36on.
00:24:38Soul flew off shelves.
00:24:41Did you ever eat Urkelos?
00:24:42Never once.
00:24:44In that clip, you also saw him catch the curtains on fire
00:24:46and he's just so blase about it.
00:24:47So this happens a lot.
00:24:49No wonder poor Carl's like this.
00:24:54I don't have to take this.
00:24:56I'm going home.
00:24:57I'm going home.
00:24:58Yes.
00:24:59I remember him when he would say that.
00:25:02I'm going to challenge you right now on Pop Culture Paradise
00:25:06to go on eBay somewhere, the dark web, find yourself a box
00:25:10of Urkelos.
00:25:11I dare you.
00:25:12Oh, eBay's.
00:25:13You don't have to go on the dark web.
00:25:14You can go on eBay and get an old box of Urkelos.
00:25:17But God, I don't know if I could justify being like, hey,
00:25:20I spent 80 bucks on old cereal.
00:25:24Got to do it for the podcast, man.
00:25:28What did you spend last year's salary on?
00:25:30Well, I know one of these expenses was Urkelos, bananas,
00:25:35strawberries, delicious.
00:25:37It'll make Laura love you.
00:25:40Yeah, don't go away.
00:25:41TGIF will be back in a flash.
00:25:45So the next step to a cinematic universe is getting our next
00:25:48show connected and that show is Step-By-Step.
00:25:52What can you tell us about Step-By-Step?
00:25:54Step-By-Step was great.
00:25:55It was a show that I didn't really appreciate as much as
00:25:58when I was a kid.
00:25:59I was still into it.
00:26:00But now that I'm older and I go back and I watch it with like
00:26:04different eyes.
00:26:05It's super funny.
00:26:07It's super informative.
00:26:09It's definitely a show you can watch with your friends or
00:26:11your mother could sit there with you and you can watch it
00:26:14and still enjoy it and not be uncomfortable.
00:26:16It was just a cast full of two families thrown together
00:26:21trying to make it work, trying to learn each other.
00:26:24And that's where a lot of the issues and the craziness ensued.
00:26:28Now to get them to cross over and to make Step-By-Step a
00:26:31success, at the end of episode 302 of Family Matters, Urkel
00:26:36in his jetpack, obviously, transports at the end of
00:26:41that episode and then crashes into the Lambert's barbecue
00:26:45at the beginning of the very second episode of Step-By-Step.
00:26:49So you watch one episode end and all of a sudden, bam, Urkel's
00:26:52crashing into the next one.
00:26:54And if you were to watch this in syndication and they're
00:26:56not back-to-back, suddenly your episode just starts off with
00:26:59Urkel crashing right through the freaking picnic.
00:27:02Right.
00:27:08There he is.
00:27:12He is a menace.
00:27:13See you, Urkel.
00:27:15He is a menace to society because he went from Chicago to
00:27:19Wisconsin.
00:27:21It's incredible.
00:27:24He's hardcore.
00:27:25He's hardcore.
00:27:26He's hardcore.
00:27:28Yo.
00:27:33Yes, the classic line.
00:27:34It's so good.
00:27:36What a cool way to do a crossover, right?
00:27:39It is a fantastic way and that's what makes TJF great because
00:27:43they don't try to question the logic of how this random kid
00:27:46just jet-packed into another show from another city in another
00:27:50state.
00:27:51No, it doesn't matter, but he's here.
00:27:52That's the good thing.
00:27:54I want to bring up this that I noticed in the playthrough.
00:27:57Look at Patrick Duffy's hand placement here.
00:28:03Oh, yeah, he knows what's up.
00:28:06Oh, yeah.
00:28:08That thigh master.
00:28:09Oh, yeah, he can tell you it works.
00:28:13Look at him just crashing through.
00:28:16I think this clip right here.
00:28:17I definitely remember this episode.
00:28:19This is the one where the younger daughter, Al, gets like
00:28:23stood up on a date.
00:28:25I don't know that she's dating that young, but Urkel decides
00:28:28to stand up for her.
00:28:29Is that right?
00:28:30That is exactly what happens.
00:28:32Urkel has a girl at each city and you know, you think he's
00:28:35here just to be Marc, the brainy science partner.
00:28:40But no, Urkel knows what's up.
00:28:43He's got his mind focused on two different things.
00:28:46Your mom and Frank ran off to Jamaica, got married, and didn't
00:28:51tell anyone.
00:28:52This is how you self-sabotage to the new kids.
00:28:55Clock nothing.
00:28:56Nine o'clock.
00:28:56Nothing.
00:28:57Ten o'clock.
00:28:58Nothing.
00:28:58Yep, I'm free.
00:29:00I'm free.
00:29:03Let's see a girl in Chicago, a girl in Port Washington.
00:29:08Steve, you are one bad dude.
00:29:11Insert ludicrous area codes.
00:29:13And if we were to insert area codes into this, we could match
00:29:17it up with the Urkel dance.
00:29:19Can you explain the Urkel dance to people?
00:29:21The Urkel dance was amazing because I specifically remember
00:29:27this episode right here.
00:29:29There.
00:29:30Well, is this the one on the rooftop or is this the one at
00:29:33the school dance?
00:29:34This is the one at the school dance.
00:29:36The rooftop is from an actual Family Matters episode.
00:29:39The Urkel dance is designed for one thing and that's to let
00:29:41your inner nerd fly and don't even think about it.
00:29:44Dance like no one's watching and there's some pretty cool
00:29:47steps to it.
00:29:48Check it out.
00:29:54German Elvis.
00:29:55I'm telling you ladies is better than Elvis.
00:29:58How do they all know the dance though?
00:30:00Because Al knows it too.
00:30:03Urkel was viral without even have a viral distribution.
00:30:06Absolutely.
00:30:08What a jam.
00:30:09Everybody.
00:30:10You know who I like the best?
00:30:12The kid behind Urkel.
00:30:14Like.
00:30:18Oh, he's into it.
00:30:19He's like, damn it.
00:30:20That could be me.
00:30:24What a good dance.
00:30:25Everybody.
00:30:29Now, would you believe me if I told you that the Urkel dance
00:30:32began trending on TikTok last year?
00:30:35And how did this start trending on TikTok?
00:30:37I would kind of just assume that this would be a little too
00:30:40old to trend on TikTok unless somebody dug it up and made
00:30:43it popular.
00:30:44No, see that's that's what I would totally think too.
00:30:46But all these random.
00:30:49All these random old things.
00:30:50It's kind of that that saying what's what you know, what's
00:30:54old is new again if you haven't seen it, right?
00:30:57So it just I have no idea how the sound got on there, but
00:31:01it did and then everybody started doing the Urkel dance
00:31:05and it's phenomenal.
00:31:06I'm all about that.
00:31:08So later when I said that Family Matters and see and step
00:31:12by step.
00:31:12We're starting to get old.
00:31:14They actually went over to CBS and CBS tried to do their
00:31:17own TJF called the block party.
00:31:19Ah, that's a dope name.
00:31:21It's actually it's pretty good.
00:31:22I would totally watch the block party.
00:31:25Do they have good shows on it?
00:31:26Well, it had Family Matters in its last season and Step by
00:31:30Step in its last season and then two other shows.
00:31:32I'll bring up here that will connect to the universe.
00:31:34Okay, but unfortunately.
00:31:36It got canceled after one year.
00:31:40And now here's where I get confused about do the Family
00:31:43Matters and Step by Step universe actually connect because
00:31:47in season 7 Al meets up with a customer at the restaurant.
00:31:50You think she'd know who he was?
00:31:54No way.
00:31:59Wait, have they given her her own show?
00:32:02She was actually taking a small role in a movie.
00:32:05Now.
00:32:05How does she look there?
00:32:06She doesn't look like she recognizes that guy.
00:32:08I you know what?
00:32:09I think that was think that was kind of a joke.
00:32:12It was a guy that took her to her dance right and saved her
00:32:16night and then and showed off to the entire student body.
00:32:22How is she not going to recognize him Step by Step?
00:32:26Maybe doesn't connect to full house because John Stamos
00:32:30not Jesse can stop list shows up in this clip.
00:32:32You look funny midday.
00:32:34No still looking.
00:32:36Did you tell I was on full house?
00:32:43This don't like blind dates.
00:32:49That's just awesome.
00:32:50That's just super like breaking down the fourth wall.
00:32:53Like that's that's just cool stuff.
00:32:56It seems like those are kind of like special moments that
00:32:59the viewer isn't supposed to be let in on and they are and
00:33:02that's what makes them so cool.
00:33:04Like that was awesome.
00:33:05I've never seen that before.
00:33:06There is another guy from Step by Step that I think the
00:33:09whole entire universe knows who is the most memorable character
00:33:12of Step by Step?
00:33:15The mom.
00:33:18One more guess Cody was of course.
00:33:22Everybody knows Cody.
00:33:23It's go go go go on with the show.
00:33:26TGIF just beginning to roll.
00:33:29Cody's dad gives him a present that can change his life.
00:33:32I bet ABC's TGIF is a lot more fun than having a date.
00:33:36You'd lose that bet.
00:33:37I bet Cody and JT have fun when they start a business.
00:33:40Okay, TGIF fans.
00:33:41We're just beginning to roll.
00:33:43There's two more funny shows to go.
00:33:44Next Cody takes over story.
00:33:46I'm going to be reading it.
00:33:47Don't go away because there's more TGIF on the way.
00:33:50Oh, nice of you to show up and be with the family Coop.
00:33:54He was so funny.
00:33:55I loved hanging with Mr.
00:33:56Cooper.
00:33:58So tell me how many different times were there were there
00:34:01crossovers like this because that's super cool to me.
00:34:04The change has kept going throughout the years.
00:34:07So as we see here,
00:34:09even when I went over to the block party, we had this show
00:34:12called Migos, which is Bronson Pinchot, the guy from Perfect
00:34:15Strangers in a new role as an alien who comes to Earth.
00:34:19So he gets a new show.
00:34:21Yep, and I believe Family Matters crossed over here because
00:34:25they hang out on one of their promos and Jaleel White shows
00:34:29up in two episodes.
00:34:31Oh, will me go to Harriet the spy?
00:34:35It is.
00:34:36What?
00:34:37Oh God is lit.
00:34:40Family Matters.
00:34:41Migos.
00:34:41That's the name of a rap group now.
00:34:43And step by house.
00:34:46The CBS Friday Night Block Party premieres one week from
00:34:49tonight.
00:34:50Dude, I'm in for that.
00:34:52That looks so dope still.
00:34:54So here the later seasons released when the official
00:34:57start.
00:34:57So here's Jaleel White popping up on Migos.
00:35:01Whoa, he didn't want to learn any dialogue, but there he
00:35:05is. And you can't tell me that's not Oracle.
00:35:09No, no, it absolutely is.
00:35:11It absolutely is.
00:35:12But it was definitely that was definitely at the end of
00:35:15their run, right?
00:35:16That was the last season of Family Matters because like
00:35:20how long could it could it go for right?
00:35:22That was that was it.
00:35:23That was the last season of both Step-By-Step and Family
00:35:27Matters.
00:35:28Doesn't it make you wish that sometimes like I don't know
00:35:30like a cartoon show like take Rugrats for example, they
00:35:36never have to grow up ever.
00:35:37You could just watch the show until the end of time or the
00:35:39Simpsons, right?
00:35:40Yeah, eventually Rugrats did grow up and that was weird,
00:35:44but it's almost like you're all grown up.
00:35:46You just want to take them and just put them into a time
00:35:49capsule and say never change you always stay the same.
00:35:53Well in the 70s, they did this thing where they did cartoon
00:35:57revivals of some of their 60 shows.
00:35:59So they had Gilligan's Island and a lot of the people came
00:36:02back and voiced it but Gilligan's Island was now in space.
00:36:07Oh gosh, and I was kind of like, all right, maybe we didn't
00:36:10need that.
00:36:11Yeah, I don't know.
00:36:11I don't know about any of that.
00:36:13You're watching TGIF.
00:36:15Please return your trays to their upright position.
00:36:18So here is our next crossover.
00:36:21Urkel is friends with this young kid in Philadelphia.
00:36:24Sean Hunter.
00:36:26Almost, he's friends with Corey Matthews.
00:36:30I know.
00:36:33Just throw it away.
00:36:34No, no, no.
00:36:35I can't break the chain.
00:36:39What a good, what a good guy.
00:36:40Whatever you do, don't send it to me.
00:36:43I'll send it to my friend Corey Matthews in Philadelphia.
00:36:48That way I'll keep my good luck flowing.
00:36:51Oh God.
00:36:53Dude, that was good.
00:36:54I like that.
00:36:54Is Family Matters a show watched in the Boy Meets World
00:36:57Universe?
00:36:58Because how do they end up with this?
00:37:04There it is.
00:37:05How do they end up with the Urkel doll?
00:37:07They went out and bought it.
00:37:09So a lot of people also think that this is Dana of Step by
00:37:13Step showing up on Boy Meets World, but I could find no
00:37:15definitive proof that this girl is Dana.
00:37:19Looks like her.
00:37:22Topanga?
00:37:25Well, it's the actress who plays Dana.
00:37:28I don't, I don't work here.
00:37:29I was just on a tour and I decided to hang back on my own.
00:37:32So that's what people think, that she was on a tour that
00:37:35Dana went on this vacation and she just hasn't called
00:37:39herself Dana, but I just don't see it.
00:37:42And what makes that TJF night fun because you're like, oh
00:37:44man, Dana just showed up and I can see people thinking,
00:37:48you know what?
00:37:49She ball-busts Corey pretty hard in this episode.
00:37:51Maybe that is Dana.
00:37:52Right.
00:37:53She's definitely her personality.
00:37:56Just an animal.
00:37:58How do you get off?
00:37:59She looks so much older than him.
00:38:01Oh, I'm sorry.
00:38:01I just apologize to her.
00:38:04I'm serious.
00:38:06This is when Urkel showed up on Full House.
00:38:11What's going on?
00:38:12It's my cousin Steve.
00:38:13He's in town for the big science fair.
00:38:15No, no, my cousin Steve.
00:38:16How annoying could one kid be?
00:38:18Oh no, you're about to find out.
00:38:23Yes.
00:38:25Yeah, I definitely remember this.
00:38:32This is how we got Steve Urkel to Michelle Tanner, who is
00:38:36another link to more cinematic universes.
00:38:43What?
00:38:47Exactly.
00:38:48I've said that my whole life.
00:38:53Fluidity is the key.
00:38:54That's the move.
00:38:54That's it.
00:38:55Trying to teach him how to be cool.
00:38:57I love it.
00:38:58You shift the weight and you go.
00:38:59You see?
00:38:59Oh, there he is.
00:39:01And it's cool.
00:39:02And it's a strut.
00:39:03And we all wanted to be as cool as Uncle Jesse.
00:39:06Oh, yeah.
00:39:08Look, he's got it.
00:39:10Now, that's a dance.
00:39:12That's got to be a dance.
00:39:13Somebody could do a TikTok now.
00:39:15It's so good.
00:39:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:39:18From there, Michelle Tanner is our link to hanging with Mr.
00:39:22Cooper.
00:39:23Now, this is another example of, hey, we have this new shawl
00:39:27hanging with Mr.
00:39:27Cooper.
00:39:28How can we get people to watch it?
00:39:29Well, for the first few episodes, let's get a bunch of
00:39:32our Full House people to show up.
00:39:34Then look who's Michelle's teacher.
00:39:36Are you afraid of Annie?
00:39:37No, not me.
00:39:40That's so cool because she was like the character on the
00:39:43show.
00:39:44Michelle Tanner had star power.
00:39:49She was like the star character on the show, for sure.
00:39:54Or they, I should say, rather.
00:39:58Mr.
00:39:59Cooper.
00:40:01Remember this kid?
00:40:03We're not kindergarten.
00:40:11Like in wrestling.
00:40:12Oh, no.
00:40:13This is that star-making vehicle here, where it's like Michelle
00:40:17Tanner is doing the heavy lifting, but now we know more
00:40:20about Mr.
00:40:20Cooper.
00:40:21And I want to see more of Mr.
00:40:22Cooper, even if Michelle isn't involved.
00:40:26Exactly.
00:40:27Brilliant.
00:40:28Brilliant.
00:40:28And they busted out even more stars because look who shows
00:40:31up to, you know, speak on Michelle's behalf.
00:40:35Hello.
00:40:35Hi.
00:40:39I love the studio audience.
00:40:42Oh, it's so good.
00:40:47The butt buster.
00:40:49Oh, no.
00:40:50She did that on purpose.
00:40:52No.
00:41:03All right, but what I really need to know right now is how
00:41:05does Sabrina the Teenage Witch play into any of the stuff
00:41:08that we're talking about?
00:41:09Well, Sabrina is no stranger to this universe.
00:41:12Here.
00:41:13We have, well, somebody from Full House playing a new role,
00:41:17but then it crosses over with Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
00:41:21I love this balcony.
00:41:24You do?
00:41:25Eric?
00:41:28I love the reveal.
00:41:30I'm sorry, Sabrina.
00:41:31My buddy just came off kind of a spooky relationship.
00:41:33He was, he was dating a...
00:41:36Oh, well, I'll just say it.
00:41:37He was dating a witch.
00:41:40Oh.
00:41:40What's so spooky about that?
00:41:43Oh, that is so good.
00:41:46I never, I don't, I don't, I don't remember that.
00:41:49That's awesome.
00:41:50In that same episode, we also had Candace Cameron playing
00:41:53a witch.
00:41:54So you gotta, you gotta keep spreading that TJF money around.
00:41:57Keep it in the family.
00:41:58Why?
00:41:58Yeah.
00:41:59We needed your apartment, you fool.
00:42:02From this exact spot.
00:42:03DJ?
00:42:04Your balcony.
00:42:05Once in a thousand years, Velaris will come into alignment
00:42:09and Satan's tail will appear, sending a light beam through
00:42:12the crystal of death, ensuring our immortality and obliterating
00:42:17you.
00:42:19Oh my God.
00:42:19Are they gonna sacrifice?
00:42:21They're gonna sacrifice Sean and his brother, whoever that
00:42:23was?
00:42:24Yes, they are.
00:42:25Now, one of the biggest things that happened on TJF night,
00:42:28you brought up the 3D night.
00:42:29Whenever you see the icon, put on the glasses.
00:42:31First up, Carl and Earth will time travel back to a pirate
00:42:34ship.
00:42:35And if you don't stay tuned, we'll make you walk the plane.
00:42:40But do you remember the night that Salem the Cat ate a time
00:42:44warp ball and every single one of the shows took place in
00:42:47a different decade?
00:42:48I don't, but that sounds phenomenal.
00:42:50So what happened here in these episodes is it started off
00:42:54with Sabrina the Teenage Witch and they go to the 60s and
00:42:58then Salem has this time ball and she has to keep chasing
00:43:00them to every other show.
00:43:02First, let's talk about this time ball.
00:43:05Maybe you should try dieting, Salem.
00:43:07I don't need to diet.
00:43:08It's funny you say that because I was looking at this.
00:43:10I'm like, it looks different.
00:43:12Guess I can go get Anne Hilda's jeans.
00:43:1460s, here I come.
00:43:19Yeah.
00:43:22Doesn't look like sardines.
00:43:24Who cares?
00:43:28Oh, I don't feel so good.
00:43:30There he is.
00:43:33Whoa, man.
00:43:38This is the best show.
00:43:45This is amazing.
00:43:46So then he shows up on Boy Meets World.
00:43:49Wait, in the same night?
00:43:51In the same night, the overall arching story is her chasing
00:43:55him through each one of these TV shows.
00:43:57So wait, chasing him through time or chasing him through
00:44:01the TV shows?
00:44:02TV shows and time.
00:44:03Okay.
00:44:04So in Sabrina, they went to a different time period and on
00:44:08the other shows, he's just going to show up in different
00:44:11areas, not necessarily a different time.
00:44:14What he's going to do is show up on that show and the time
00:44:17ball warps to a new generation based on whatever transition
00:44:21the show was talking about.
00:44:22So Sabrina's all like, I need to go to the 60s to get these
00:44:25pair of jeans.
00:44:26We're in the 60s.
00:44:27So Salem shows up on Boy Meets World here.
00:44:31In the 60s?
00:44:32Nope, back in the real world.
00:44:35Back in the real time, 1990s.
00:44:37You know, I wonder what it was like during World War II.
00:44:39And away we go.
00:44:41Yep.
00:44:43Last one back to Philly is a rotten egg.
00:44:45Wait, Corey, you forgot your ring.
00:44:47The ceasefire will commence in 24 hours.
00:44:51Wait, Corey, come back.
00:44:58He's a goner.
00:45:01So here is where I know that it does not cross over with
00:45:05Drew Carey and Home Improvement.
00:45:06Because Salem mentioned that.
00:45:09Okay.
00:45:13Home Improvement was never on TGIF, was it?
00:45:17No.
00:45:18Stick them down below.
00:45:21Hey, are you famous?
00:45:23Do people tell you you look like Tim Allen?
00:45:24Because you do.
00:45:26Oh, where do I find Drew Carey?
00:45:29Are those shots or what?
00:45:31So the next show that Salem showed up on was a show called
00:45:33You Wish.
00:45:34This was about a genie that lives with a family on Earth.
00:45:39I know you're thinking this doesn't sound entirely memorable
00:45:42and that's because it only lasted one season.
00:45:45It did have Jerry Van Dyke in it, which is pretty sweet because
00:45:49you know, I love Coach.
00:45:51Right.
00:45:51So to help promote this in the long history of TGIF shows
00:45:55trying to help out each other, Salem shows up.
00:45:59Oh, I was gonna say Steve Urkel.
00:46:01No, Urkel's gone by this point.
00:46:03You gotta have a new star carry on and your star at this point
00:46:06is Salem the cat.
00:46:07Boo.
00:46:08He's a cat.
00:46:08Yeah.
00:46:09Salem was pretty big at the time.
00:46:10He's got books.
00:46:11He's got stuffed animals.
00:46:12He's got a Tamagotchi.
00:46:15You talk? To you?
00:46:16Yeah, because you guys are genies.
00:46:20How'd you know?
00:46:21Because anybody else that heard me talk would go,
00:46:25Excuse me.
00:46:26I'm Sabrina.
00:46:27I'm a witch.
00:46:27I'm looking for a black cat named Salem.
00:46:29There she is.
00:46:30Halden said he was here.
00:46:31You're genies, aren't you?
00:46:33How would you know that?
00:46:34Because if you weren't and I said I was a witch, you would
00:46:36have gone,
00:46:39Back in the 1950s.
00:46:41Boy, those were simpler times and I miss them.
00:46:46Stop doing that.
00:46:47Oh, no, Sabrina Spellman.
00:46:49Long, long, long, long distance.
00:46:51This is kind of cool.
00:46:52I like the different time frames and how these characters
00:46:56would be in the 60s or 50s or you know, wherever they're
00:47:00going. That's kind of cool, man.
00:47:01I'm into it.
00:47:02I think the funniest gag though is every single time they
00:47:05show up going, you're genies, aren't you?
00:47:07Because you freaking out if I was starting to talk to you.
00:47:10You were just a regular human.
00:47:12Is this trying to say that Steven Spielberg got inspired
00:47:15by Sabrina the Teenage Witch to make E.T.?
00:47:18Kiss me.
00:47:22You know, kid, anyone who can pedal a three-speed bike as
00:47:26fast as my Harley and keep up the conversation is okay in
00:47:30my book.
00:47:31Love the 50s.
00:47:33Less crowd, less smog, more drag races.
00:47:37More drag races!
00:47:39This show's funnier than I remember it being.
00:47:49Oh, there it is.
00:47:50The iconic scene and now we know where he got it from.
00:47:54It all makes sense now.
00:47:55Cat.
00:47:56So Sabrina has to go chase back after Salem and this is
00:48:00where I think Steven Spielberg is part of this universe.
00:48:06My bike!
00:48:10You ran off again.
00:48:11I don't suppose any of you have a broom or better yet a
00:48:13vacuum? I have a bike.
00:48:15That'll work.
00:48:16I'll get it back to you.
00:48:28That's amazing.
00:48:30Oh, there it is.
00:48:32Put down the pen, Spielberg.
00:48:39That's good stuff.
00:48:40So would you say that like, you know how Marty McFly
00:48:43accidentally invented rock and roll and Star Wars basically?
00:48:48Is that what happened in this universe?
00:48:50I think you got the proof right here.
00:48:52So the last stop on that night was to a show called Teen
00:48:55Angel. Do you remember Teen Angel at all?
00:48:58I do not.
00:48:59I don't remember the show at all.
00:49:00So when The Simpsons was actually good, a couple of its
00:49:03head writers went off to make this show.
00:49:05The premise of this show is two friends have a major tragedy
00:49:10happen. When having a sleepover, one of them is dared to
00:49:14eat an old hamburger that they find under the bed.
00:49:16Can you guess what happened to the guy who ate the old
00:49:19hamburger?
00:49:20He died.
00:49:20He died!
00:49:22So now he's his friend's guardian angel.
00:49:25No!
00:49:27That is awful.
00:49:28How bad was that hamburger?
00:49:31Look, I found a stray cat.
00:49:32Oh, nice.
00:49:33Look, I found a stray cat.
00:49:35Oh, now the excitement begins.
00:49:37I miss the 70s.
00:49:39Back then I wasn't sitting home without a date on a Friday
00:49:41night.
00:49:42I wish life would be like the 70s again.
00:49:44That's Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.
00:49:46Bad thing to say when you're holding a magical time-traveling
00:49:48cat.
00:49:49So we're gonna see, we're gonna see Sabrina now in the disco
00:49:53age.
00:49:53Excuse me, I'm looking for my cat.
00:49:55Now, is this towards the end of Sabrina's run?
00:49:58No.
00:49:59Okay.
00:50:01I'm supposed to be invisible to humans.
00:50:05What?
00:50:07Well, you're an idiot.
00:50:11Next, you'll be telling me there's genies and boys meeting
00:50:14worlds.
00:50:17Okay, I see what you're up to here, buddy.
00:50:20Gotta get all meta there, but I love the continuing gag
00:50:23throughout the entire night of, oh, wait, you're a genie?
00:50:26Oh, wait, you're an angel?
00:50:28Yeah, I'm a witch.
00:50:29We're all part of the other side.
00:50:31So your cat really did change time.
00:50:35I told the head something was wrong.
00:50:37Who's the head?
00:50:38He's this all-knowing blabbermouth up in space.
00:50:41Okay.
00:50:42Well, it's been nice chatting with you, but I've got to go
00:50:44find my talking cat.
00:50:45Hey, foxy mama.
00:50:48Through your credit card records, it's not very often someone
00:50:50buys a $1,000 disco cat suit.
00:50:52Just me and the rest of the kit.
00:50:54Salem, to return us to the 90s, you have to cop up that
00:50:56time bomb.
00:50:58I'm afraid that you induced vomiting.
00:50:59Hey, they're about to play Must Grab Love.
00:51:02That'll do it.
00:51:04Yeah, that'll do it.
00:51:08That is good.
00:51:08That's good stuff.
00:51:09That's funny.
00:51:10So to end that night, Salem gets captured.
00:51:13They get the time ball out and I think it ends with Sabrina
00:51:17trying to kill Marty from Teen Angel, even though he's
00:51:19already dead.
00:51:21Well, can I at least have a magazine?
00:51:25Cory, you're going to ask me something?
00:51:28That's better.
00:51:31When you're dead, give me a call.
00:51:34You're cute, but I'm going to live for a thousand years.
00:51:38Yeah, nice blow off.
00:51:41Rejected!
00:51:42So then our next show for one, two seasons, even though it
00:51:45only lasted one on ABC, was the Clueless TV spin-off.
00:51:50Do you remember any of this one?
00:51:51I kind of briefly, now that you mention it, remember Clueless
00:51:55having a show?
00:51:56I don't ever remember watching a single episode of it.
00:51:59Well, they used some of Sabrina's star power.
00:52:07So let me go through this one more time.
00:52:09You're telling me you've been at school since September?
00:52:13This is so spooky.
00:52:15I don't remember seeing you there.
00:52:16I remember that girl, the blonde.
00:52:17I know everyone.
00:52:18That's Cher.
00:52:19What Cher?
00:52:19You think I just snapped my fingers and magically appeared?
00:52:22As if.
00:52:27See ya.
00:52:32This is too weird for me.
00:52:35Yep.
00:52:36TGIF is just beginning to roll.
00:52:38Stick right here as we get on with the show.
00:52:41So you would think by that point, that's where it all ends,
00:52:44but it should. Clueless went over to the WB and their characters
00:52:50appeared on with characters from Moesha.
00:52:54Oh gosh, here we go.
00:52:56More crossing over.
00:52:58So here's another character from Moesha.
00:53:01Her name was Nisi.
00:53:08Hey, I remember the redhead girl.
00:53:12So we have this other character, Hakim from Moesha.
00:53:15And yes, you would remember her because she played Amber on
00:53:20Clueless.
00:53:21They brought back most of the Clueless pass that they could
00:53:23afford.
00:53:25And then later on, she would become a cast member when Sabrina
00:53:29moved to the CW or to the WB.
00:53:33So was that like when, okay, this show isn't pulling any more,
00:53:37you know, numbers.
00:53:38Let's send it over to the WB.
00:53:39Yes.
00:53:40It was when they were a little bit colder about it and they're
00:53:43like, all right, we cut expenses and you know what?
00:53:46We're done with it for the fifth season of Sabrina.
00:53:49Goodbye.
00:53:49And I think they were done with TGIF at that point.
00:53:52So Moesha spun off to the Parkers.
00:54:05So this girl was from the Parkers.
00:54:11After she left Moesha,
00:54:14she went on to star in the Parkers.
00:54:17Her own show.
00:54:19Do you remember the show, The Hughleys, which also was on
00:54:23maybe one season of TGIF.
00:54:26DL Hughley.
00:54:27I definitely remember that show.
00:54:28He was funny.
00:54:29Well, DL Hughley and the Hughley family crossed over to the
00:54:33Parkers.
00:54:33I used to have my own place, remember?
00:54:36Wait a minute.
00:54:37Who do you think you're talking to?
00:54:38One of your little friends?
00:54:40Honestly, I don't know where you come from sometimes.
00:54:43Nope.
00:54:47Now you remember on The Hughleys,
00:54:48he ran a vending machine company.
00:54:51No, I don't remember that.
00:54:58No.
00:55:01Oh.
00:55:06Oh, no.
00:55:09Yeah, so then on The Parkers,
00:55:11The Hughleys show.
00:55:13On The Hughleys, The Parkers showed up.
00:55:19Oh, you're watching TGIF.
00:55:26Wait a second.
00:55:26Wait a second.
00:55:27Didn't Fresh Prince crossover at some point?
00:55:29Some people believe that it did, but it was honestly just
00:55:32one of those cases where the actor from Fresh Prince showed
00:55:35up. He does look like the father on Fresh Prince.
00:55:41Oh, yes.
00:55:42Look at this.
00:55:44Icons.
00:55:45Let's go.
00:55:49They need their own buddy comedy show.
00:55:53That would have been amazing.
00:55:55Oh, God.
00:55:56It kind of makes you wish that there was a crossover.
00:55:59You know, that was definitely a big surprise.
00:56:04Happened to be on the lot, you know, I would say that
00:56:06crowd was going bananas when it happened.
00:56:09Dude, that was great stuff.
00:56:11All right.
00:56:11So in conclusion, tell me what was the off the top of
00:56:15your head?
00:56:15What was the craziest thing you found in your research
00:56:19process for this?
00:56:20Well, not only is this cinematic universe still going
00:56:25technically.
00:56:27What?
00:56:27I'll get to that in a second.
00:56:28I found this little crossover here where Urkel is showing
00:56:32you how a bill is made with some very famous cameos and
00:56:37Urkel isn't a Republican thing.
00:56:39He's not a Democrat thing.
00:56:40He's a bipartisan member of this of this world.
00:56:45Anyhow, guys, I came to Washington to pass my own clean
00:56:48air right?
00:56:49The Urkel air right?
00:56:51Most people think it's very difficult to get a bill passed.
00:56:54But I'm here to show you that it's as easy as throwing
00:56:56mold.
00:56:58Boom.
00:57:00So Urkel is very bipartisan.
00:57:02He's able to work with both sides.
00:57:04Mr.
00:57:04President.
00:57:08No way.
00:57:10I was wondering if you can endorse my Urkel air bill.
00:57:13It will definitely provide a clean air.
00:57:15That is incredible.
00:57:23Bill Clinton is in the TGIF cinematic universe.
00:57:28That is so cool.
00:57:33But
00:57:34Oh, yeah.
00:57:41But he also worked with 1996 political candidate Bob Dole.
00:57:50Excuse me kid.
00:57:55He's gonna get shot by the Secret Service.
00:57:57Oh God.
00:57:58Take a seat and listen to what I have to say.
00:58:02He did make a time machine and a cloning machine.
00:58:04So I would take him serious.
00:58:06That was that that was kind of funny.
00:58:08I had never seen those clips before.
00:58:09This was something that blew my mind when I was like, wait
00:58:12a minute.
00:58:13What?
00:58:14Because this wouldn't have aired anywhere other than a classroom
00:58:17and he's still Urkel and you're like, wait a minute.
00:58:20This was like this is that was that was one of the things
00:58:23you'd watch when you'd have, you know, film day in class
00:58:27and you would wheel in, you know, the big metal thing with
00:58:30the TV strapped onto the top and the VHS player you wheel
00:58:34it into the room.
00:58:35It was meant to educate you and all these companies put
00:58:38aside their differences and their intellectual properties
00:58:40and they're like, all right, you know what it's for the
00:58:42kids.
00:58:43It's kind of like the cartoon all-stars to the rescue, which
00:58:45is a review on this channel where they have a message and
00:58:50you know what they're going to put aside their differences.
00:58:53Remember when I said that TGIF it's still going.
00:58:57Have you heard about this show?
00:58:58The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch on
00:59:02Netflix?
00:59:03Netflix.
00:59:03Hey, I have.
00:59:04So this last season that they had before it went off the
00:59:07air this cameo happened.
00:59:10Sabrina.
00:59:11Is that you?
00:59:12Salem.
00:59:13There you are.
00:59:14Where were you?
00:59:15We were getting worried.
00:59:16Not me.
00:59:17I haven't been worried since the bottomless mimosas.
00:59:21Wow.
00:59:23Cut.
00:59:24That was wonderful.
00:59:25Dear, you're going to fit right in here.
00:59:27Oh Sabrina.
00:59:27This is going to be a laugh riot.
00:59:29Want to see me do a spit take?
00:59:31Sorry, who are you?
00:59:33Over your aunties, of course.
00:59:35So you can basically see that this is still going on but
00:59:40yeah, but that that kind of sucked though like that that
00:59:43wasn't that wasn't Sabrina Sabrina.
00:59:45Well, that was new Sabrina getting a crossover from old
00:59:48Sabrina and then you it wasn't old Sabrina.
00:59:51It was old Sabrina's aunt.
00:59:53That's still a cameo.
00:59:54That's still the universe crossing over.
00:59:55That's I mean, that's not Iron Man showing up but maybe in
00:59:59I don't know.
01:00:00What is that new one that's come out there?
01:00:05What is that new one this week?
01:00:07This week.
01:00:08Yeah, there's like a there's like a side Avengers show that
01:00:10just started airing but that'd be like using Falcon.
01:00:14Yeah, Debbie like them using Jarvis or the tech or something
01:00:18so that you know, you don't disrespect Jarvis like that.
01:00:21You son of a it's like it's the same universe like you know
01:00:23that to get Jarvis they would have to be affiliated with
01:00:26Iron Man and then you have the follow-ups you have your fuller
01:00:30house and then you have your girl meets world and the Disney
01:00:35Channel has their own kind of Universe going on and in that
01:00:38Universe girl meets world connects with a bunch of other
01:00:41shows like the show I heard called Jesse that aired on Disney
01:00:45Channel and then there's like a whole web page dedicated to
01:00:48all how all those shows combine.
01:00:51So it's just one big freaking web.
01:00:54All right.
01:00:55I'll get a level with you.
01:00:55I think you've I think you've convinced me about this.
01:00:59I didn't think you could and I kind of want us to be a part
01:01:03of this TGIF Universe where it worked.
01:01:06Where do we get the applications?
01:01:08Well, I use this power.
01:01:09I have to make it happen.
01:01:12So to do that, obviously we need a character to crossover
01:01:15on our show, right exactly.
01:01:18What if I was able to get Al from step-by-step to show up?
01:01:22I'll leave the show.
01:01:23There's no way.
01:01:24Hey, it's Al from step-by-step.
01:01:27And now my show pop culture Paradise is a part of the TGIF
01:01:31cinematic Universe.
01:01:33I guess I just crossed over.
01:01:35What does that mean?
01:01:37What just happened?
01:01:39We crossed over.
01:01:40We're part of the Universe.
01:01:41Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, that was good stuff.
01:01:46Yeah, I bet you didn't think that your favorite homie would start the day not affiliated with
01:01:51Urkel, and now, based on a hundred degrees of Kevin Bacon, you're a part of this.
01:01:57Yeah, I feel pretty good about that too. I'm now part of the TGIF universe. I think I'm
01:02:02gonna put that in my Twitter and TikTok bio. Keep checking our website at ABC.com for more
01:02:07ways to be a part of TGIF. We'll see you next week.
01:02:11For Joe, my name is Jeff. Thank you so much for watching Pop Culture Paradise. Be sure to like,
01:02:15comment, and or subscribe, maybe all three if you're feeling up to it, and we'll catch you next
01:02:20time. There's other videos on the channel, and remember, answer the question, are these characters
01:02:25talking about a show that they're part of in character, or is this being thought of way too
01:02:30hard, and you side with Jeff? You side with me. Let's go.
