00:00We've already started to see that rain build up yesterday evening and overnight.
00:06Parts of northern Sydney had about 60 or 70 millimetres.
00:09Parts of the central coast a bit further north, well over 100 millimetres.
00:12But the focus today is really shifting on the Hunter area around and north of Newcastle
00:18and the mid-north coast up to about as far north as Port Macquarie.
00:23So it's that region there north of Sydney which we are seeing the potential for, not
00:27just rain through the day today but the next several days.
00:30That word prolonged is a key word for this weather event because we're looking at rain
00:34through most of the day today, then again tomorrow, then again on Wednesday, potentially
00:38out towards Thursday as well.
00:40So it's not a short, sharp, heavy rain event, it's a long stretch of maybe moderate rainfall
00:46at any one time, but several days in a row of moderate rain will give you big numbers.
00:50So we could see well and truly in excess of 200 millimetres, some places will probably
00:55get closer to 3 or 400 millimetres over the course of the entire week and that will definitely
01:00be enough to cause a response by the river network, especially between Newcastle and
01:05Coffs Harbour.
01:06Those rivers in that northern section of the state there are likely to see a response in
01:10terms of flooding.
01:12Widespread minor or moderate flooding is expected along those rivers and some rivers may see
01:16major flooding if that rain really falls widespread across their catchment areas.
01:21So it is going to be a significant, long-lasting wet weather event and once again the areas
01:25that are of particular concern are the Hunter area north of Newcastle and the mid-north
01:30coast area in New South Wales.
01:32Okay, and just very briefly, Angus, people can keep an eye on those flooding warnings,
01:36but the temperatures are expected to fall as well?
01:38Yeah, temperatures are going to be cold for many parts of the country.
01:41Not so bad underneath that rain event because we've got a lot of cloud cover, just some typical
01:46mild autumn temperatures there.
01:47But we've had very, very cold conditions through other places this morning and maybe even colder
01:53tomorrow morning.
01:54So that includes Melbourne, which was two degrees in the city, zero degrees at the airport
01:57and into the negatives for the suburbs.
02:00We had three degrees as the minimum in Adelaide this morning and that was down at around zero
02:05for some of the eastern suburbs of Adelaide.
02:07Okay, a chilly one.
02:08So across the southeast.
02:09A chilly one.
02:10Sorry to chop you off there, Angus.
02:11A chilly one indeed.
02:12Angus Hines there from the Bureau of Meteorology.
