Weeks of patchy, rainy weather to continue in NSW.
Transcript
00:00Showers have just started moving on to the New South Wales coast and this will kick off a prolonged run of wet weather over the next several days
00:08affecting parts of eastern Australia which have already seen significant rain and flooding in the past few weeks
00:14I'm Angus Hines here at the Bureau of Meteorology, this is a severe weather update and today is Monday the 18th of August
00:20Let's dive into the radar from this morning, there's been a few showers inland but for the most part I want to draw your attention
00:25to the east coast where we have seen the development of some heavier showers offshore for parts of the Illawarra, Sydney and Newcastle and the Hunter
00:34but in the last few hours they have moved from offshore to onshore, in fact let's zoom in a little bit
00:38we've seen some showers move into parts of Sydney, move through parts of Wollongong up towards Newcastle at the moment
00:44and where we're seeing yellow, slightly heavier falls, nothing too dramatic on the radar yet
00:49but we are starting to see that rain creep into the east coast
00:52let's move away from what we're seeing towards what we're forecasting as we put on the data for the next few days
00:59and on the remainder of Monday we'll see a few more showers along this coast but it will stay very much near the coastline
01:04however, into Tuesday watch how this wet weather signal expands through much of eastern Australia
01:10potential is there for showers through, well the southeast of Queensland up into the Darling Downs
01:15across into the northwest slopes and plains, the northern and central tablelands
01:18as well as the entire coastline of New South Wales
01:21for Tuesday we don't anticipate any particularly heavy falls
01:25but there will be some quite widespread risks of wet weather through these eastern areas
01:29I'm going to continue playing this map now through Wednesday and Thursday
01:33and the key message really is how little changes
01:36we just keep this wet weather signal right across the eastern seaboard through Wednesday
01:40and if anything that spotty shower signal from Tuesday
01:44turns to more widespread persistent rainfall on Wednesday
01:48it looks like Wednesday and Thursday will be our two wettest days of the week
01:52with the more persistent rainfall coming in rather than the stop start showers we might see tomorrow
01:58this map is going to come to a close on Thursday night
02:00and there's still a lot of rain between Wollongong and Brisbane across the east coast
02:04including Sydney and much of northeastern New South Wales
02:07this wet weather will start to ease on Friday
02:09but for many it probably won't clear until Saturday
02:13so quite a prolonged run of wet weather
02:16how much we could see
02:17well I'm going to put that on a map here
02:19but remember the further we look out into the future
02:21the more hazy these details become
02:23so I wouldn't take these numbers and lock them in stone just yet
02:26they might get up
02:27they might shift up
02:28they might shift down
02:29but this should give us an indication
02:31of the regions where these larger rainfall totals could fall
02:34remember that red on the map here showing 50 millimetres or more
02:38so we could see that much over the next four days for parts of southeast Queensland
02:42and the Darling Downs
02:43but then mostly across the state border in New South Wales
02:47for the coastline we could see the heavier falls around the northern rivers
02:50and the mid north coast
02:51and I would say those are two districts we're watching super close
02:54because they could see some of the heaviest totals of anywhere in the country this week
02:58also some reasonable rainfall totals through the Hunter
03:01parts of Sydney, parts of the Illawarra
03:03but also the strong signal for rain inland
03:06up in the northern tablelands, the central tablelands
03:08and even further west out to the northwest slopes and plains
03:11I actually do want to zoom into this area here
03:13because rainfall in this part of the country
03:16is a little bit more unusual
03:17particularly these multi-day rainfall events
03:20through the northwest slopes and plains
03:21spots like Tamworth, Narrabri and Moree
03:23don't tend to see as much rain as their coastal counterparts
03:27so this is quite a significant dose for that part of the country
03:30and this is made doubly significant
03:32by the fact that we still have some flood warnings in place
03:35for this part of the country
03:37now these two flood warnings
03:38the moderate flood warning for the Namoi River
03:40the minor flood warning for the Barwon River
03:42these are not to do with the upcoming rain
03:45these rivers are seeing flooding thanks to rain
03:47about 10 days ago
03:48and these rivers still have not subsided
03:51so further wet weather across these soggy catchments
03:54will likely mean that these levels start to lift once again
03:57across the rivers
03:58and there have been new rivers also added
04:01into a potential flood watch
04:04this is how that flood watch looks
04:05these are rivers which we are watching at the moment
04:08for the potential for flooding later in the week
04:10the key days for flooding look like they will be Wednesday
04:13and Thursday
04:14minor to moderate flooding expected across much of the mid-north coast
04:17and up into the northern tablelands
04:19and northwest slopes and plains
04:21I would like to reiterate once again
04:23that we could see changes to this flood watch
04:25potentially new rivers through northern New South Wales
04:28or even southern Queensland could be added into the flood watch
04:31as our information changes
04:33same thing could apply down through the Hunter
04:35and even down towards Sydney
04:36so if you live anywhere through northeastern New South Wales
04:39or the far south of Queensland
04:41this is a really good week
04:43to stay up to date with your forecasts
04:44your warnings
04:45and of course your flood watches and warnings
04:47we'll be updating them each and every day
04:49on the Bureau's website
04:51thanks for watching this video
04:52we'll be back tomorrow with another update
04:54to give you the latest information
04:55but for now
04:56thanks for watching
