00:05and I have a long-standing interest in the history of Chesterfield, my hometown.
00:09I've been asked to say something about some of the more interesting buildings in the town centre.
00:13We're starting here in front of the Chesterfield Cooperative Society's main store, built in 1934.
00:20In the early 1930s, Elder Yard, which had previously been a narrow footpath
00:25running between Knivesmith Gate and Salter Gate, was opened out into a modern road
00:29and the whole of one side of it was occupied by a new cooperative society store, opened in 1934.
00:36The carp had been in Chesterfield since the mid-nineteenth century,
00:39with branches in a number of places in the town, including quite a large shop on West Bars.
00:46They then moved most of their departments here to Elder Way, which became their flagship store
00:52for something like sixty or seventy years. After it closed, the first floor was converted into a hotel,
00:58and the ground floor has been converted into smaller shop and cafe units.
