00:00It is windy! You can't see right now, the shirt's not blowing, wind stopped, like right as I started.
00:05But, doesn't mean we're not going to give you some cool information, my fine feathered friends.
00:11And what we have for you is the fact that probiotics were a hit for anxiety and depression.
00:18According to a recent meta-analysis, that's JMO taking a piss in the background.
00:23Good thing you didn't see the goods, this video won't get deleted for indecent exposure.
00:30This was a meta-analysis of 20 randomized control trials involving over 1,100 people, adults, with depression and anxiety.
00:40And they gave them probiotics daily for anywhere from 1 to 24 weeks, ranging across the different studies.
00:48The results showed that those who took probiotics, compared to those who took a placebo,
00:53had significant, clinically significant improvements in their symptoms of depression and anxiety.
01:01You guessed it.
01:02And in regards to depression, it was with a large effect size.
01:06So, a very significant improvement.
01:08And regarding anxiety, it was a moderate effect size.
01:11So, pretty still significant improvement there.
01:14So, why might this be?
01:15Why might this be?
01:18Well, we know that your gut and your brain are constantly communicating via the gut-brain axis.
01:25And they don't communicate regarding only things like immune function, or appetite regulation,
01:32hormones in general, and many other things.
01:36But also mood and mental health.
01:39Your gut function has a significant impact on your mental health.
01:44So, mechanistically, how may have probiotics improve the mental health in these people?
01:51By acting on the gut-brain axis.
01:54Influencing neurotransmitter production is definitely one way.
01:58Caught the phone about to blow over.
02:01Put it against the greenhouse.
02:03Didn't even work.
02:04Very windy.
02:05It wasn't lying.
02:06Affecting neurotransmitter production.
02:09Right?
02:09So, neurotransmitters are brain chemicals.
02:12Things like serotonin make you feel happy.
02:15Dopamine is another example.
02:17Makes you feel pleasure and motivation and reward.
02:20And so, if your gut can affect these, levels of these, well, no surprise that if probiotics
02:26are good for gut health, they can influence levels of these brain chemicals.
02:31I'm going to go on it again.
02:31Of these brain chemicals, we're going to stand really close to talk to you guys.
02:34This doesn't blow over.
02:35Also affecting gut barrier integrity.
02:40The function and integrity of the gut barrier by supporting it.
02:46Would probiotics potentially, mechanistically at least, be improving mental health?
02:52And also, altering the stress response via affecting the vagus nerve.
02:59So, we know that the vagus nerve controls 75% of our parasympathetic nervous system, our rest-digest portion, our relaxation portion,
03:09of the autonomic nervous system.
03:13Right?
03:13The other portion is sympathetic.
03:15Fight or flight.
03:16So, probiotics, you guys, may be good for depression and anxiety.
03:21This video is not intended to treat, diagnose, cure, or prevent any disease.
03:24But, you should talk to your doctor about probiotics.
03:28And look into the strains that are the best.
03:30And you want a diverse species panel.
03:32It should be 50 to 100 billion CFU.
03:34I feel like I'm saying this every day, but it's good for you.
03:37So, find a way to take them.
03:40Who do we got out here?
