The United Nations voices alarm at the large numbers of non-nationals being deported from the United States, in particular the hundreds sent to a mega-prison in El Salvador. "Families do not know where their loved ones are, lawyers do not know where they are, in fact no one knows where they are for certain and we don't know the legal basis", says UN rights office spokeswoman Liz Throssell in Geneva.

00:00We're deeply concerned precisely given the context, the uncertainty of we don't know what is happening to people and that would raise concerns indeed that families do not know where their loved ones are, lawyers do not know where they are, in fact no one knows where they are for certain and we don't know the legal basis.
00:16So that is raising huge, huge human rights concerns indeed. So indeed given the circumstances, given the risk of the fear of human rights violations being committed, there may well be concerns of enforced disappearance and of course that, you're quite right, it is a really serious issue under international human rights law.
00:37These reports indicate that many of the detainees were not informed of the US government's intention to deport them to be held in a third country, that many did not have access to a lawyer and that they were effectively unable to challenge the lawfulness of their removal before being flown out of the US.
